I had heard great things about Tenleytown Automotive, and they did not disappoint! I stopped by during the most recent heat wave, my AC not working at all. Though they were full, and on a Saturday when they close at 1:00, they were kind enough to work me in. They did a comprehensive assessment of my AC system, remedied the situation, and had my car back to me in just a couple of hours. I pulled in with a tire low on air for the second time in three days—not even knowing they were there, just looking for an air machine. They found the leak, repaired it, and had me on my way in less than ten minutes for a great price. Super friendly, super helpful, excellent service—I will be back for sure!!

Had heard great things from friends in the area, and after my first experience with them (getting my oil changed), I can see why theyre so well liked. They were able to work on my car promptly and were quite efficient, communications via text was great, and really appreciated not being told a list of 15 things that really should be done -- instead they simply showed me one part that had some odd discoloration, and advised not to worry at all about it, but just keep a watch on it. How refreshing!

I ended up here because it was the closest option after I got a flat tire and I was really impressed with how professional and quick the service was. A very nice change from other mechanics Ive gone to in the district. They made a frustrating experience into a painless and not-too-expensive one.

Great experience! Easy to make appointment, car finished the same day even though it was more than the oil change I had signed up for. Phil and Tom both helpful and efficient and thorough. I can’t vouch foe the quality as it was just past weekend but all good so far. Seemed about average pricing for whenever my BMW X5 goes into the shop.

The guys there were great, came in for an oil change and got a good overview of the cars condition (and everything was fine, they werent trying to fix something that wasnt a problem.) Glad to have a solid mechanic close to my house

Tenleytown Automotive is an excellent car repair spot with good prices, honest and reasonable management and excellent mechanics. Phillip is a great guy and very conscientious about his services. Unbeknownst to him (or me), one of his mechanics (let go since then) stripped a bolt/hub, putting one of my tires back on. I didn’t realize it until several months later when I was fixing a flat at another station. I got in touch with Phillip and showed him the pictures and the damaged part. He didn’t hesitate to do the right thing and immediately offered to fix the mistake on his own dime! When another related part had to be changed (from wear and tear) he replaced that part as well. I was very impressed with Phil’s honesty, his pride in doing things well and his fair and respectful manner. I highly recommend Tenleytown for any repairs.

I stopped at the Exxon to put air in the tires of my car (it looked like one was really low) and one of the guys working at Tenleytown Automotive came over, asked if I needed air, directed me to move the car over to the body shop area, and then a host of mechanics gathered around to offer a diagnostic. (The tire was leaking, so more air would not have helped.) Immediately, they offered to change the tire (using the spare in the trunk), then jacked up the car and changed it -- all without asking for a single dime. (I actually offered them money, but they refused.) What a bunch of class acts!

I was quoted about $150 at a different auto shop in the area and thought that sounded steep, so I came by tenleytown and they made the repair in less than 20 minutes for half the price without an appointment. There are professional, competent, and really cool. Definitely recommend and will be going back to them!

I made a last-minute appointment on a Saturday morning for an oil change and ended up bringing the car back on Monday morning for new tires and front brake pads before a long road trip. These folks couldnt be friendlier or more helpful and accommodating, and my car is now good as new. Ill definitely return and recommend this business to others.

I could not say enough amazing things about this shop. They are honest, professional and their actual job is top notch. They are extremely knowledgeable and you always feel comfortable with them. They are not there to break the bank but to really take care of the clients.I dont take my vehicles anywhere else and actually make the 46mi drive just to have them take care of my cars. That is how great the work and service really are! Couldnt ask for better shop!

I am leaving a 5-star review because I hate that small businesses are beholden to such a crude metric and there is no option to opt out of choosing a rating and leaving only a review.That said, here was my experience:Brought in a 2008 Hyundai that wouldnt pass inspection with a check engine light and an SRS light, couldnt be more than $1k bluebook but I use it enough that Im willing to pay for what it needs to pass inspection.Day 1: I tell them I am just looking to do what is needed to pass inspection, they tell me it will be a couple hours. I get a call back later that day saying theyll need to keep it overnight to figure out whats going on with the check engine light, but they have found $2100 of preventative maintenance from belt replacements to all manner of fluid replacements (including brake fluid which was replaced 6 months ago on a separate repair). I decline the extra maintenance as I was just looking to figure out whats going on with the warning lights for now.Day 2: I get a call letting me know they are still having trouble diagnosing the check engine light, chasing down a small leak in the evap system. No big deal, except that Im paying for rides anywhere I go in the interim. They call back near the end of the day to tell me the leak in question is coming from the fuel pump and theyll send over an estimate when they know more. I ask whats going on with the SRS light, and they tell me theyre not sure but they hope that clearing the code will keep it from coming back again. This tidbit turns out to be important later on.I learn they cannot source the fuel pump anywhere but from the dealer. Its over $800 for the kit, about $1100 in all for the repair plus over $200 for the diagnostics. Yikes! Nonetheless, I tell them thats fine, but I would like to get the car back asap. They tell me the part will be in on Friday, so I retrieve the car and tell them Ill bring it back when the part is in.I am given pause by the fact that they are also recommending a new gas cap. As I understand leak testing, it should be clear whether the leak is coming from the gas cap or the fuel pump (or somewhere else), and when I tried to discuss this they were evasive. I didnt care much about a $30 gas cap on top of a $1400 repair, but it worried me that there was any uncertainty about where the leak was coming from given I was paying more than the bluebook value to fix it.Day 3: Driving the car around, I notice the check engine and SRS lights are not on anymore. I know most cars need to achieve a certain drive-cycle before the monitoring system is fully engaged after the codes are cleared, so I dont think much of it.Day 4: I learn the part on order is not in. I realize theyre at the mercy of whatever dealer is shipping to them, no big deal. They tell me it should be in in the next day or by Monday at the latest.Day 7: I call ahead to ensure the part is there. its not, but will arrive sometime that morning so I head over. Once Im at the garage I am told actually, funny thing, the part wont be here until Wednesday. I ask why the check engine light hasnt come back on after driving it a few days, and perhaps would the car pass inspection? I was told it would be no problem to check that with their scanner, except it was on loan to someone else. I decided at that point I would just bring it by the inspection station and see.Day 8: I bring the car to be inspected and voila! I pass without issue and without the $1400 fuel pump repair. I am still billed for the $200+ diagnostics. I let them know I am not satisfied with the diagnostics since I passed inspection without their costly recommended repairs. They tell me they dont just clear codes and give the car back to see if it will pass, but thats exactly what happened in this case with the SRS light. After some back and forth I pay for the diagnostics at a 10% discount.I dont doubt there was some real labor here and I dont feel they were trying to rip me off, but there were enough red flags that Ill look elsewhere for future work.

Called at the last minute about getting our front license plate mounted to the front of our car. They were super friendly and able to get us in at the last minute on a Saturday and ended up charging us only 1/3 of what the dealer had originally quoted me. We will be doing all future repairs and maintenance here!

I came in to Tenleytown Mechanic about a year ago to get an oil change and diagnose and fix a problem I was having with my car. I moved out of state now but if youre looking for a place around the DC area for a good mechanic; go here! I spoke to Mike when I went in and he was very helpful. The whole team at Tenleytown Mechanic are very respectful and friendly. They let you know what is wrong with your car without throwing in a bunch of random things just to make a buck. They charge great prices for labor, honestly the best in the area. They are honest about how long it will take to fix your car and are great about keeping you updated. They have a little shop but have some great guys in there thatll do an amazing job.

Had a car that sat idle during coronavirus. Caused some engine problems. Broke down a few blocks from Tenleytown Automotive. They were very friendly and very helpful. Diagnosed the car quickly, did their best to find me the cheapest price on parts, drive over right away to get the parts, and installed them super fast. Went from unexpected break down to back on the road in just a couple hours. Plus, I was visiting the vet, so I had my dog with me. They invited me inside with the air conditioning, to help my dog stay cool, and gave him a dish of water. Nice guys. Thanks! Definitely recommend them!

We live in the neighborhood & needed a battery charge. We brought our car into Tenleytown Auto & left it there for several hours for a long term charge. Our battery was dead & would not take a charge. They replaced the battery & delivered our car to us which was very helpful as we are disabled.

Went in at around 1 walked up and before I even stepped up to the door they greeted me. Asked if they had time for an oil change, immediately moved a car out of the garage and told me yes. Got a call later and asked for the ok to do a tire rotation with the price, had my car ready in no time. Definitely recommend, they’re professional and nice. Will be going back.

Great shop. Worked with them ahead of time to plan out adding a lift kit to my Jeep, new tires, and get some other miscellaneous work all around. Was able to drop-ship all the parts directly to their location (including wheels and tires). They conducted an additional inspection on brakes, fluids, etc. - finding few minor areas that needed fixing - and I wasnt overcharged.

I don’t normally do these reviews, but I wanted to go out of my way to express that this place is awesome. Being from Ohio, I had reservations about a garage at a gas station, but I needed new Serpentine belts, an O2 sensor, a tire patch, and an oil change quickly (Jeep Wranglers are fun), so I took a chance on Tenleytown Automotive. It was the best decision I could’ve made. I dropped my car off at 0900 without an appointment and by 1130 my wrangler had all necessary changes made. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, didn’t try to upsell me, and answered every question I had. And I came in under budget!. My car is running flawlessly now and I notice a real difference in it. Seriously... take your car here. This place is the real deal.

Mike, the head mechanic, diagnosed and explained the needed repairs, and identified several other issues that needed attention. Tenleytown did all of the repairs promptly, and expertly, and at a reasonable price. Tenleytown is now our “go-to” shop for routine maintenance and all our car repairs.
