My McIntosh amp was no longer working. I took it here after finding them online. Highly recommend. Corey fixed the amp up to new working order. Couldnt be more pleased!
Awesome place with the nicest Staff. Tons of Amazing Vintage Stereo Equipment. If you are looking to buy any Vintage, or nice stereo equipment or Speakers. Or if you just need your equipment repaired or serviced. This is without a doubt the only place to go!! Thanks Cat and Mike for all your time, and help, and for the Awesome Adcom Preamp!!
Great place. Doug repaired several of my vintage guitar amps, and the service was superb. Yes, it takes a bit of time they seem to be backlogged but what a relief to know that somebody can expertly service and repair a very valuable and collectable item. The communications are also first class both Doug and Bill answer e-mails and explain in detail whats going on. My highest recommendations.
I am a music lover with no technical skills at all. Over the past 9-10 years I have brought approximately 15 audio items to MT for repair. These items have included McIntosh amps, a 1929 RCA field coil speaker, vintage tube German radios, and two pristine early ‘60s tube consoles, along with an assortment of speakers, turntables and CD players. Please note that no item has had a second visit; each item was brought in only one time during which the work was done right. To the points made by a number of reviewers; yes it takes a while to get items back. They are always backlogged. And, yes, they are not inexpensive. They are busy because they are excellent and in high demand. As always, you get what you pay for. With MI you get superb technical quality and decades of diagnostic expertise. I do not want my equipment in the hands of a low bidder. I am insistent on direct and timely communications, and recognize my obligation in that relationship. Bill T and colleagues always return calls and emails quickly, but I don’t expect them to drop their repair work to cater to me; after hours or break time contact is fine. The techs, Bill in particular, always has the time to listen patiently to my rookie tech questions and provides clear answers. I am always consulted in advance if an unexpected problem arises, and no additional work has ever been done without my concurrence. In short, there have been no financial surprises. Finally, in all these years I have never had any “customer service” issue with front desk personnel. I treat them with courtesy and am extended courtesy in return.
I brought a receiver that was $4,000.00 new in 2008 on but that hadnt produced a sound for almost 5 years. I was about to throw it away since B&K electronics had gone out of business. Another repair place told me a repair attempt would be futile since parts from a closed company would be almost impossible to obtain. Music Technology told me that the majority of parts are almost universal. Long story short. I got it back and it works beautifully for a very reasonable price. Happy Customer.
Would have been 5 but it took a little longer than I wanted but I understand they had a backlog. They saved my Yamaha Motif for the low and I thought it was done! Great company!!!
I recently dug out my old turntable which had been buried in storage for years. It wasnt working properly and I couldnt find anyone who repaired them. Finally someone suggested Music Technology. Mike did a great job and went above and beyond to get my old turntable working like new. Very happy I found these guys. Very knowledgeable and skilled.
Im blown away.I have an old Sony 300 CD carousel. After a couple decades of good service, it failed. Just a sick groan, door wouldnt even open. Hated the idea of not having it, so looked around.Found two places that did this work, one far off in MD, the other seven minutes away from me in VA. Most reviews were good for the close place, the other in MD a little better. Took a chance with Music Tech. They were quite good on the phone, quoted a reasonable price for assessment, after which they would quote a price to fix, if doable, and apply the assessment fee if I proceeded.I called again before going, hoping to get an estimate, if the fix was what I and they assumed. (three new drive belts) They gave me the email of the tech who would do the work.He replied quickly with a precise quote, again, very reasonable. I asked how long to repair, and he said he had a 4-5 week backlog. Lengthy, but a product I could do without if need be. I gave the go.Four days later, I get an email. Its ready, you can pick it up whenever you like.Brought it home, and it works great.Covid note: They tell you that you can call in advance, they will prop the door open and go in the back while you drop off and pick up. Take credit card info over the phone. Very confidence-inspiring these days.Five full stars.
They are one of the best repair shops in our areaa.
I have only had one experience with this company and the gentleman that worked on my Williams was honest enough to tell me what it would cost to fix it and for another $200.00, I could get a new one. Therefore, I declined to have it repaired. Additionally, the gentleman suggested that I purchase a Roland, Yamaha, et..., so I purchased a Roland 5 years ago that has given me good service until two days ago. I called this company and the lady was pleasant and let me speak with Mike who was pleasant and direct about the possibility of what’s wrong. Dropped my digital keyboard off today and no one was rude to me.As a former law enforcement officer in PWC and a United States Marshal under the late Attorney General Janet Reno, I have spent a lot of time in courts and I can tell you for a FACT that judges and the BBB do NOT tolerate rude behavior nor poor customer service. If the ALLEGED customer service is so bad, then why hasn’t anyone dragged the owner into court. Sounds more like hot air being blown to me. I checked the BBB website and NO FORMAL COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED.All businesses have backlog at times or delays due to increase in business and/or the availability of parts...THAT HAPPENS. QUALITY WORK takes QUALITY TIME!!! You want a rush job giving birth to poor quality work, then you get what YOU ASKED.It is against the law to record a phone call without the other party’s knowledge. Called and let the party who answers the phone know that the conversation is being recorded. If there is rudeness, then you will have a record. As a man, I will NOT argue with a woman; I immediately hand to phone to my spouse and let her handle it. She has NEVER, repeat, NEVER failed me yet in that department.I rate MTI at 5 STARS for great customer service and honest. Yes, piano repair is a little pricy (so is auto repair as technology advances and health care as research improves) and as a senior citizen on a fixed income, we will just eat beans and hotdogs until the following month WITHOUT COMPLIANT; next month, pork chops.
Ive used Music Technology at least a half dozen times in the past, and have ALWAYS been happy with their work, Owner Bill Thalmann has a sterling reputation in the industry, and every time Ive needed to speak to him about a service issue, he has graciously made time to address the problem. Their repair service has been first rate, and I dont hesitate to recommend them to any of my friends. They are probably not the cheapest, but Im certain they are the most competent- as in everything else, you get what you pay for.
If you need to get that old amp, receiver or keyboard working again, this is the place you have been looking for. Prices are not cheap, so keep your expectations realistic. Unless your item has sentimental value, or is a collector piece, or you are a working musician who depends on a certain sound, you may end up spending $75 for diagnosis only to find that your $200 stereo is going to cost $400 to repair.
This is a great family run business and I have taken several vintage bass tube amps to be serviced. Doug is an outstanding repair wizard and I couldnt be happier with the results. He always calls first to let me know the level of effort and projected costs upfront. I will always take my gear to them when his TLC is needed!
Very impressed with the quality of work and attention to feedback that Doug provided. Ive taken an amp to multiple techs to fix what I assumed to be a minor issue of reducing idle hum/hiss, and none were able to identify the problem or address the issue in a satisfactory way until I brought it here. Would definitely trust Music Technology with amp repairs or tune-ups in the future.
Very Helpful Staff!
Expect expert service from very competent technicians. Doug repaired an old bass amp head and cab for me. It now sounds much better than it did when new. Great communication throughout the process -- Doug was very responsive to my email questions and called me to discuss the recommended repairs before moving forward. I highly recommend MTI and will continue to take them my business.
Google directions takes you to a wrong location, three buildings before. Instead wait until you see the Music Technology sign from the street before turning right.
I contacted Music Technology to repair a custom built Amplifier. They told me:1. How to ship the Amp2. How long it would take to have my amp looked at.3. Once it was looked at, how long it would take to repair4. The cost to repair.I received the amp back, and it was fixed as promised.Count me as a very satisfied customer.Highly recommended.
We drove 3 hours to have a piece of our audio equipment serviced. The item was restored and working like new. Will definitely use them again.
I would like to strongly advice future customers of Music Technology Inc to think twice before they make use of their services.I dropped off my electric piano for a key bed replacement .I explained on the day of drop off that I was a music teacher and that I truly needed my piano back ASAP. The Owner assured me that I would have my piano back in no more than a week to 10 days...Three weeks later after several calls to them to check up on the progress with very little feedback from them; I was told they only ordered the key bed that day...Well here I am after a full month and many phone calls and I finally have my piano back. It was covered in dust and spider webs when I picked it up. I am disgusted that they are even calling themselves a professional business. Stay away!
Recommend looking elsewhere. This is too bad, as there are not enough stereo equipement stores in this area. However, Music Technology and its principal Doug W completely drop the ball when it comes to integrity, ethics and honesty, and that is something any prospective customer should heed. Surprising since Doug is an Ivy League educated lawyer. Very sad to see. Steer clear.
Not only has Music Technology done an excellent repair of my vintage Marantz 8b, Bill is always ready to answer whatever question I may have on the equipment - even several years after having work done there. Additionally, they have been very flexible about when I arrange to bring in the unit.
Corey repaired my vintage 1975 Marantz model 2325 amplifier after Just Audio of Baltimore held on to it for more than four months and finally just gave up. These guys are pros. You may pay more but the hassle of doing things on the cheap is a time waster. They fixed the unit properly, on time and on budget. It is hard to find qualified technicians that know how to repair older equipment. Its nice to have people close by that can do this highly specialized service.
They arent ge fastest place out there, but they make up for that by being very thorough, getting it right and guaranteeing their work. I took a JVC turntable there and they did a great repair and refurbish in it. It looks and plays brand new, Im so happy with the job they did. Bottom line: if you want it done fast, go elsewhere. If you want it done right, take it to Music Technology.
My EAR 324 phono preamp was experiencing an intermittent problem where it would periodically not power up. They completed the repair ahead of the estimated completion date, at a very reasonable price, and I couldnt be happier.Every interaction with the folks at Music Technology was friendly and professional.Im about to drop another piece of equipment experiencing an intermittent problem (tube pre-amp) and Im confident Ill receive the same treatment.Highly recommended!
Absolute ripoff. After keeping my turntable for four months(!), they decided it was unrepairable and kept my $75 deposit. I will never go back.
The management is up front with estimates, policies and prices. I have had repairs done on two occasions. Julian serviced my vintage Thorens turntable on time and at the price agreed to. Working flawlessly. I bought a vintage Marantz 2252 b at an estate sale that Corey resuscitated from the dead. Once I had it home, I thought there was a problem in the FM tuner. Spoke to Corey who gladly took another look under their shop warranty, no charge. These folks know their stuff and love what they do. When you need technical expertise to repair things that matter, these folks provide true VALUE.
I asked to get an estimate to repair an audio jack for a DJ controller. I told the lady it was under warranty so the company will pay for it. I thought that was a good thing. She immediately got extremely smug and told me in a rude tone that they charge $75 for an estimate. Really? You dont have to take the thing apart, just put a new audio port on it. Sometimes its not what you say, but how you say it. She could have flipped me the finger and had the same effect. Maybe its because shes a miserable jealous hag and saw I had just come from the gym?
I dropped off a 10 year-old JBL EON15 G2 powered speaker which has just started making a horrid noise whenever a heavy beat was played by electronic drums. Do to its design, I knew that if the woofer needed to be re-coned, it would have been time-consuming and expensive.About two days later, I received a message the speaker was ready to be picked up! When I spoke with Corey, he mentioned that he got lucky and found a piece that had come loose on the power supply and was arcing causing the speaker to rattle badly. The repair fee was only $135 which delighted me compared to the alternatives. This was the second time I had taken pro-audio gear to Music Technology and have been exceedingly pleased both times with their competence, knowledge, responsiveness, and professionalism. I wouldnt hesitate to use their services in the future and certainly recommend their firm without reservation.
They charged me $140 to take plastic card out from under one of the keys on my keyboard without calling me to tell me thats all that was wrong with it. I spoke to the owner and he clearly does not care about his customers. Be prepared to get hosed if you go there
Had to get a broken key replaced under warranty and Nick was able to turn it around in less then 24 hours! Very pleased with the work and will go to them for any instrument repairs in the future.
Tried to contact a tech before bringing the unit to them for repair, Rude womans voice answered the phone and said their techs dont answer phone calls and if I want drop off the unit with a deposit and hung up on me. If this is the way they treat prospective customers I wonder how they would treat their customers after they become their customer? I dont want to find out. There are better people to service your unit in IL and West VA. Why deal with bad service like this? Stay away!
I purchased a Talos Basic amp designed by Doug from Music Technology. Great amp that sounds amazing.
They are very professional and upfront. i had problem with my Korg PA800 that i purchased from Ebay which the motherboard was bad and Nick was able to fix it and also give me warranty. thank you I will recommend them to everyone.
Ive been taking my solid state studio equipment to Corey for years. Hes fast and gets it done right. Nobody better.
Doug has helped and fixed and tweaked my guitars for years. He just did a masterful fret job on my Maton acoustic. I abuse that guitar when I play and it is holding up beautifully. He also changed the pickups and set up on my tele. Im taking my Les Paul Jr. to him today for a P-90 install and set up. I also had my Roland piano cleaned and fixed after 12 years. Its like brand new now. So, I care only about the quality of work. Quit whining about customer service...go to chick-fil-a for that. No, Doug is not my brother.
I have had three occasions to use Music Technologys services. For all three I would rate them at 5 Stars. They have repaired a 1981 Italian Brionvega TS505a 220v radio, the CD unit on a 1990 Denon Cellena G-05 compact component stereo system, and lastly a Rek-O-Kut N-33H turntable from around 1960. I guess Im supposed to buy new equipment to keep the worlds economy going but just cant get around to replacing all the neat stuff I already have.Kudos to Tim Leinbaugh and Bill Thalmann
This is a review of TWO experiences I have had with the kind folks at Music Technology.1st Experience: March 2012: I have a Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 and I needed re-tubing AND some modifications to the amplifier. I purchased a kit online from Mercury Magnetics in Chatsworth, Calif. including their upgraded power transformer, output transformer and choke control unit which shipped DIRECT to Music Technology (I put my MT Claim check # in the shipping notes of the Mercury Mags order form). I dropped off my head and about 6 weeks later got back a fire breathing dragon. Everything worked perfectly. My original parts were returned to me in a box (old tubes and the original Marshall components). The work done by Doug and his team at Music Technology exceeded my expectations and was worth every penny.2nd Experience: September 2015: Same amplifier needed new tubes (matched Mullard EL34s and Tung Sol 12AX7s). This time I brought in my two PRS Harmonic Generator 4X12 cabinets for a speaker refresh as well. I ordered 4 16 ohm Celestion Heritage G12H(75)s from Avatar Speakers online (those guys are thorough as well) and had Mike at Music Tech. install 2 16 Ohm Celestion Vintage 30s on the bottoms of each cab with 2 of the G12Hs on top. Doug W. again performed the amplifier repair. Same result (FANTASTIC!) Doug even replaced the Marshalls power switch (the lamp had burned out in the old one and I like to get an illuminated visual of what status my amp is in on/standby/off). AGAIN: I got back a fire breathing dragon that is clean and louder than ever (Marshall/EL34/Celestion IS Rock!) and it took about 5 weeks. The old parts were returned in the box I brought in, including the original 8 Ohm Celestion G12T-75s. I actually left the original speakers with Mike at MT, I believe they do speaker re-coning as well. Music Technology does high quality work on tube amplifiers and they have a keen understanding of the needs of guitarists who use tube amplifiers. They are not the cheapest around and they take their TIME...which is AOK by me. I bought a lot of my gear back in the 80s and 90s (when I could afford it) and I can ill afford bs or shoddy repairs. So Music Technology is PERFECT for me. Please dont try to rush them on the work. Be as detailed as possible (I write everything out on notes that I tape or attach to the equipment) to avoid misunderstandings.I do online reviews but I dont like Google knowing everything about me so I held off doing a review, but when Excellence is delivered EACH time, it needs to be acknowledged. My hat is off to Doug, Bill, Mike, and especially Kat at the front desk. This is an old school family style business and I LOVE that about these folks. My active gigging days are probably (mostly) behind me now, but I still love to scare up the wildlife in Arlington VA. on a Saturday afternoon every now and then and I am able to do this with the affordable, high quality workmanship and attention to detail that I receive from everyone at Music Technology. Any guitar player with a tube amp or speaker cabinet in need of repair in the D M V that was on the fence about trying these folks:Rest Assured - Music Technology is the Real Deal.Aaron A.
This is the first review I have ever written and I usually ignore internet reviews. Boy did I learn my lesson. Easily the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Dropped off my amp on January 10th (paid the deposit January 17th) and was told it would take approximately 3 weeks (21 days). After 46 days (39 since the paid deposit) of waiting, I decided to call and see the status of my amp. I was told my technician (Doug) would call me later that day after he had opened it up to see what was wrong with it (why did it take 46 days to open up my amp?). Called back after a couple hours and found out he wasn’t even working that day. I got his cell phone number from the receptionist and left Doug a voicemail. No one called me back. Finally got in touch with him after calling them the next day, and turns out he was on vacation for 2 weeks, and then had the flu. After looking at the amp he told me it would be ready to pick up the next day, and that the speaker was plugged into the wrong jack. I went in the next day and asked if the repair would be covered by my fender warranty, and was confronted by who I assumed to be Doug’s wife. She was extremely rude and acted as if I was stupid for asking. I’m not mad at all about losing my deposit, It just would have been nice if someone had called me and told me that my amp repair would take twice as long as originally promised.
I had a terrible experience using this company and wouldnt recommend it to anyone. I sent in a loop pedal I have had for years that started acting up. They shipped it back to me with the SAME problem. I called and inquired about their policy with items that had failed to be fixed, and was confronted by a woman on the other line that was incredibly rude and impatient, and seemed to be personnally offended that I was calling to complain. Because of this bad experience, I registered a complaint with the company regarding the awful customer service, something I have NEVER done before. I was then personnally confronted and admonished by the OWNER in a response email!!! Thats when I knew it was bad. He happened to be the womans husband and was offended by my customer service complaint, and didnt seem to care about my original issue at all. This man was standing up for his wife no matter what. Very odd way of dealing with a paying customer. After a few of the STRANGEST emails sent back and forth between me and this man he finally answered the question I had asked his wife over the phone. The companys policy was that if the customer was unsatisfied with the work, the customer could send it back in and they would service it for free. A very reasonable policy that somehow was beyond his wifes capacity to answer over the phone. The owners excuse for his wifes behavior was that she was stressed. Hardly an excuse for how I was dealt with over the phone. So finally I had my answer and sent my pedal back in for repair. They worked on the pedal and fixed it this time, simply by deleting the mempory of the prerecorded loops that the pedal had come with. A simple fix, I know, but I did not know how to do it. (which is why I sent it in of course.) The company emails me back and says the unit has been worked on and is ready to go. I confirm, and another 3 WEEKS go by. I email the company again, and they had forgotted to ship it!!! So they finally ship it back to me, and now it works. Overall, I will NEVER be returning to this company. The customer service was AWFUL. They dont seem to respect the fact that there is a knowledge gap between the musicians and those that are able to service these pieces of technology, and it most definitely shows. The pedal definitely had something wrong with it, seeing as I was not capable of getting it to work, and after all that they send a note back saying I think the cutomer should pay shipping because there was no real defect. Was there a fake defect? It didnt work, they worked on it, and now it works. Hhmmmm, maybe there was a reason I sent it in. Perhaps not a physical defect with the device, but average issues that come up with a pedal through years of use. I do NOT recommend this company. STAY AWAY.
Used Music Technology to keep my old school powered mixers and passive speakers in working order for the past several years. Their service is not cheap, but Corey has done excellent work on my mixers, and William helped me with a particularly thorny problem with a Mackie speaker that got me through.Im a working acoustic soloist, did 170 shows in 2012, and I rely on Music Technology to keep my show on the road. On Coreys recommendation, I have gone to a Yamaha passive mixer and a QSC powered speaker, and my stage sound has never been better.
Forget this business..... They charged 410$ for nothing.... I doubt that they dont know anything...when I bring my keyboard to there.... just only one woman..nobody there for my explanation about my keyboard .... the old guy as the guy in the picture just only one to break my stuff.... I dont want discuss with them anymore....I told my friend this place is a liar ..never never
Stay away from Music Technology! Kathy is rude. My amp sat for a month and a half, never fixed. Terrible service!
