Very unprofessional with zero customer service skills and a noticeable lack of ability within the profession. They will take your money to tell you something you already know that they said they can help with, only to turn around and proclaim that they cant. And dont ask for a writeup on what the diagnosis is because they are not professionally equipped to do that. With zero customer service skills they will treat you like dirt and disrespect you as soon as they have your money.
First the good news. Most places were backed up for weeks so I was happy to hear that this place would diagnose my motor right away. I thought $160 per hour was a bit steep, but worth the timely review. I talked to Adam and took my 17 foot boat and 1989 90 hp Mariner outboard to him for a check on why it did not have spark. Ryan came out right away to look at the engine. I asked him if I could hang around while he diagnosed the issue. He said sure and had me start the engine a few times while he checked the wiring. He quickly found the problem with low voltage coming out from the CDI switch box. I think it took him about 8 minutes. Ryan gets 5 stars! Like many other business, usually the diagnosis fee is included if you have the problem fixed at the shop. Not the case with these guys. The minimum charge is $193.35 including tax, credit card transaction and PPE fees. (No PPE was used) Adam left an email with the invoice and they wanted to charge the one hour diagnosis of $193.65 per hour and then another 3 hours labor to replace and rewire the 10 wires on the switch box. This is about a 10 minute job. I called him and told him that I appreciated the diagnosis, but that I had ordered the part and wanted to come down and get the boat. Adam was irritated and said he did not do check ins and check outs on the same day. WHAT? He was upset that I did not want to pay the extra $480 in labor charges to remove and replace the switch box for a total cost of $1,054. You will want to read the fine print on their contract and pay attention to the Difficult Client Clause, Extra fee charges, all goods sold without warranty clause, not liable for any incidental or consequential damages clause, etc.
If I could leave a negative star, I would have. A complete ripoff. Brought our boat in for an estimate for things that we need for our boat (port engine doesnt start plus misc repairs and maintenance). Adam charged 4 hours for the estimate. He then gave us an estimate of $10k for repairs and maintenances. He said the high cost is due to limited access and poor deck design. We said fine, what is the cost to remove the aft deck completely and how much it would lower the overall labor fee due to limited access. He said he is not sure. and the cost to remove the aft deck? $1k. there are couple screws that hold the deck down. he also quoted $800 labor fee to replace 3 batteries. and the batteries are out in the open, not even in the corner. We bit the bullet and paid the estimate fee, took our boat to Waypoint Marine right across the water. Their estimate to have the exact works done? $5k. And their facility is much much better. So please take your money elsewhere.
Should have read the reviews before calling these guys. The mobile mechanic that came out was a nice guy but had no tools or ability to do any diagnostic work. He pushed on a couple of wires and took a 10 minute boat ride to verify the symptoms I had shared over the phone. $363 ($165 service call, 1 hour @ $165 + tax) later and Im told the boat needs to be pulled from the water and go to the shop for more work.Stay away from these guys at all costs! Complete and total fraud!
I wish I could give no stars. My davit cable got jammed, so called these guys because they could come out quickly. After the excessively gruff appointment scheduling, the technician showed up the next day without tools, and gave me some vague possibilities about reverse polarization on the motor. My minimum one hour was quickly burned up and it only resulted in being $365 poorer and a promise of an estimate. The estimate came in at $900+ with no guarantee that it wouldnt me more. When I asked a question about the estimate, I was told I had a big problem, and that if I was on a budget I should call my insurance agent. Really? This is customer service?? I called Monkey Fist Marine, and they did the whole thing in less than two hours and under $300. Stay away from Seattle Mobile Marine. They only want your money, and dont even smile when they are taking it. One of the worst customer service experiences Ive ever had in any service industry.
I will NEVER recommend this man (Adam Chamberlain) to anybody! This is quite possibly the worst encounter I have ever had with any service provider. Without getting into too much detail, this man charged me for eight hours of work when at most only three were needed. He completely misdiagnosed the main issue (he said it was a solenoid when it was a cable to my coil) and my engine was not fixed. He either doesnt know what hes doing or is intentionally deceptive. After netting out reasonable hours and costs, the most I should have been charged was $500 to $600. He charged me over $1,300. If youre in the area, go to Ballard Marine across the Ballard bridge. They are honest and will treat you right. The only reason I didnt go with them in the first place is they didnt have any availability to meet my timing.
My experience was eerily similar to Victorias. I needed a mechanic to come to the dock to diagnose and repair two main engines. They required payment of $330 ($300+tax) up front before they would act, and they assured me they knew my older gasoline inboard engines. The fee was $150 to show up plus $150 for the first hour of troubleshooting. When I called and asked what they found, I was given a repair estimate for $8,000 to replace the intake manifold on one engine, and told the other simply needed a new starter. Since the problem was overheating of the *exhaust* manifold, I asked what the intake manifold had to do with it. I asked for an explanation of what actions had been taken during the 1 hour troubleshooting that I bought, that would lead them to that conclusion. They became very defensive, and told me to check my attitude because we are professionals who do this every day and you need to let us do our job without interfering. I demanded to speak to the mechanic, who told me my intake manifold was clogged with salt. He apparently observed the heat exchanger on the engine and somehow still thought the intake and block were salt water cooled (NOT!). Long story short, I replace the exhaust manifold and riser myself, for $500, and the problem was solved. Had I gone with them, it would have cost me $8,000 and the problem would not have been solved. On the other engine, I took their advice, and replaced the starter, which solved nothing, because it wasnt the problem. It was a relay. I had another mechanic come out and diagnose it, and he spent 2 minutes and ran a test (for free!) that showed the starter working perfectly. So, I dont know what these guys problem is, but I got two bad diagnoses for my $330, and two good diagnoses from another outfit for free because they were so simple. Ill never use these guys again!
I hired them to look at my boat, the man who scheduled my appointment and answers all the phone calls has terrible customer service, rude. Then once you sign their: I have you by the **** you will definitely regret it. I will not be using them again for any services, and they way over charged me. I do not recommend them or any of their services for anyone.
Purchased an older motorsailer in Seattle needing significant systems, appliances and electronics upgrades and repairs to sail to San Diego. These folks (the 2nd contractor employed) performed flawlessly from under decks plumbing to galley appliances to a full suite of coordinated navigation electronics. All work formally quoted in advance. Pricing is fair (Boat & Cheap dont mix). Sailed to San Diego in 8 days.
If I could give Adam Chamberlin and Seattle Mobile Marine zero starts, I would. I tried to follow up on our service call after being charged $300 for 10 minutes of his time to look at my boat. When I explained that I did not understand the charge, he immediately became defensive and started yelling at me. Im guessing that I am not the first customer to complain. I asked him to let me finish explaining the issue but instead he actually HUNG UP the phone on me. I called him back to ask if this is how he typically treats customers. Bottom line, he charged me $300 to steer me in the right direction on the issue with my boat because that is his business and, to add insult to injury, he yelled at me for taking issue with what I consider to be highway robbery. There are a ton of companies to choose from when servicing your boat. This was an emergency call and I really regret the decision to go with Adam and Seattle Mobile Marine. Theres just no excuse for talking to someone that way, especially a paying customer. I would highly recommend choosing any other company but this one. I live on Ripley Lane where all of my neighbors own boats. Ill be sure to steer them in the right direction when choosing a boat servicing company.
Complete mis-diagnosis of my engine problem. After 4 trips and thousands of dollars fixing fuel related issues by Seattle Mobile Marine, finally found another mechanic who confirmed it was battery/alternator issue all along, which is what I had suggested from the beginning. Even worse, when informed of this, Adam at SMM was rude, threatening, insulting...WORST customer response I have EVER experienced!!!!!!
Called for a quote for an impeller job...quoted me a 2 hr job at 3 hours @ 150hr + parts. Waypoint was 250 out the door. If you like getting ripped off by a rude mechanic this is your guy.
The owner Adam likes to overcharge and lies about times spent while over shooting estimates by hundreds or thousands of dollars. Avoid at all costs you will not receive services desired or paid for
Excellent staff berry friendly and helpful
Avoid Adam Chamberlain
