Love this place! Easy to be visually overloaded, there are so many cool, colorful and unique items. Plan on going back, otherwise you will miss stuff. Owner Gary is very personable, and quick to provide the provenance for the items.
This is a one of kind place for African Art and Gary the owner only enhances the experience. Make sure to drop in when you visit the area. We visit it every time we’re in town.
Great place with an amazing selection of African Art! I got a genuine Impala skull with horns and its beautiful!
Excellent product selection. Excellent customer service.
I am the owner of a Latina owner of a small shop in Gulf Gate. On Saturday afternoon I decided to close my store earlier and check out a new store across the street which sells handmade soaps and other things. I then went to the African store called Nontando As soon as I walked in, the owner who recognized me as the owner of Maco MadeinColombia across from him kicked me out of his store. According to him because I didn’t come to say hi to him as soon as I open my shop. When I started Maco I visited his store and asked him questions about his business. I also bought some stuff from him and was honest about opening my business which by the way sells completely different things than him. As he didn’t know how to explain his behavior he said his wife came into my store one day and I kicked her out. On top of everything he lied! For those of you who know me I am a very welcoming person and every time I have the chance I will go and buy from the local shops in my neighborhood. As a historian I have to say It is a shame that such a beautiful continent is been represented by such a horrible human being.
The best store in Sarasota. You could spend a couple hours there and still not take in all the great artifacts. Lone ir.
LOVE this store! Packed with African art: masks, pottery, jewelry, textiles, pottery, carvings, beads, etc. The owner personally goes to Africa every year to find new things from throughout that continent, nearly all of which are one-of-a-kind and in a broad range of prices. I really enjoy poking through this place. Each visit usually means circling the aisles 2-3 times to see it all. Not at all like chain import stores, this place is the real deal. Also, its in an artsy area with cool resale shops and ethnic restaurants so its kind of a dont miss thing for us.
Walked in to this African place while eating in an area. Interesting place with variety of of item from all over the continent. Gary the owner is a nice guy who knows everything about each item and where it came from. We had a great talk and great time shopping there. Will be back!!! :))
If youre looking for African decor, art, jewelry, clothes or knick-knacks, this is the place to go!We stopped into Nontando because my mother-in-law likes large, clunky jewelry. After entering the shop, she was amazed to find not only jewelry to suit her tastes, but also found several pieces she can use for her decor, including a primitive mask she fell in love with. My wife found a handbag with exquisite hand-beading. So if you at all like African art, be forewarned that you may spend more than you want! The shop itself is small, and jam-packed with items, so you have to look carefully to see all the merchandise. The owner is more than willing to describe the items, where they came from, what they represent, etc. The prices were more than reasonable, especially given the hand-crafting many items featured.Even if youre not planning on an African decor, its worth stopping in if only to window shop. And you many walk away with some good ideas!
Love this place, my absolute go to for unusual gifts. The owner Gary is attentive, helpful and knowledgeable about his product. A wholehearted five star rating!
