I have taken three of my vehicles to Henry over the years. He is an honest, no nonsense kind of person who really knows his trade. He has good people working for him and oversees their work. I have referred several friends to him and they have all been very satisfied with his work and prices. He does not gouge. Once I took my Accord for an oil change and to have him check something and he said to take it to the dealership because the problem ($1200 worth) should be covered under my extended warranty. And it was. Thank you Henry for allowing me to worry about one less thing!

I came here as a referral from my friend Holly. The location is really convenient since I live 10 minutes away. There is also a Chipotle nearby so I walked to get lunch while my car was being inspected. This was my first time coming to a mechanic as I am a new driver with my first car. I was really nervous about being upsold since I literally know nothing about cars but the manager, Henry, was honest and helpful. He never tried to upsell me on service I did not need. Because he is an expert with Japanese cars, I felt safe entrusting him with my baby 2017 Red Honda Civic EX-L. I was very impressed by his knowledge and he gave me tips on how to take care of my baby and how to keep it running smoothly for up to 20+ years. The pricing was way lower than going to the dealership. The most important factor was that I felt that I could trust Henry and I will continue to go to him! I will be back. My car is running perfectly now and my MPG is so damn high, almost 36mpg now! Thanks again Henry!

There are a few essential things you need in life: food, water, shelter, and a TRUSTWORTHY/RELIABLE mechanic. Pro Japanese Auto Repair just filled that mechanic void for me.I spoke to Henry on the phone earlier in the week regarding front shock replacement for my Gen III Toyota Prius. I told him I bought my own shocks so I just wanted a quote on labor. Before giving me a really fair quote, he first asked which brand of shocks did I purchase. After I told him KYB he was quick to validate my choice oh very good, thats what we would use too! I had a really good feeling about Henry after I hung up so I decided to come in this morning.I arrived just before 8am and was greeted by a very nice gentleman who I presumed was Henry. He took my car for a quick test drive which I thought was odd, but later found out he did this to check if my shocks even needed to be replaced. While my car was being serviced, I got to chit chat with Henry a bit. Hes been in the business for 30 years and is seriously one of the most down to earth people Ive ever met. Genuine and kind-hearted. He even said that he knows most people can work on their own cars now through YouTube, so I can call him if I ever get stuck with something on my car and hell walk me through it. What?? Wouldnt you want customers to come to the shop instead?? Well I got my answer after chatting with another customer who was getting an oil change. Shes been coming to Henry for 3 years and was introduced to him by a friend who had been coming to Henry for 20+ years. When you provide good service, your customers will be back AND theyll tell their friends/family.One last thing in this epic novel of a review. During my chit chat with Henry, I mentioned to him that my car makes a rattling noise on cold engine starts and I think its the heatshield. While the car was on the lift, he told me to follow him into the shop and we both looked underneath my car. He took one look at the heatshield and noticed that it was bent into the exhaust pipe and bent it back into place. VoilΓ‘! Rattling gone!!! Toyota of HB tried to charge me $175 for a new heatshield + who knows how much in labor (see photo).. Henry fixed it in all of 2-seconds for FREE!Thank you Chu Henry! Ill definitely be back for future maintenance/service and Ill be telling everyone I know.

Ive taken my Nissan truck to Henry for 3 years. First time I went in to have my brake pads replaced. Henry called me within half hour to say I didnt need new pads, the current ones were still good. I had problem with the truck not starting, I thought it was a bad starter. Henry called me back to say it was the key switch and replaced it. Cost me $40. I now take my Honda CR-V for old changes. Synthetic oil and filter for $50. Wal-Mart across the street charges $75. Two thumbs up for Pro Japanese, I wont go anywhere else.

Called to help with a diagnostic from dealer who had recommended replacing a torque converter on a 3 year old Camery. (($2500). He explained how other owners of this vehicle has been in to see him completely explained the issue. He made no attempt to have me come in to his business, Just seemed very honest.

I was told by a Hyundai dealership that my 2008 Hyundai Accent needed a new clutch. Of course, they wanted to charge me an arm and a leg -- $1700 to be exact. I couldn’t afford that, so I started looking around for independent shops that could do the job cheaper. I came across Pro Japanese Auto Repair. The owner, Henry, quoted me $850 for parts and labor. I visited his website and glanced at some reviews -- it looked okay. But honestly, I was desperate. He told me the job would take one day, so I scheduled a day off work to drive from Long Beach to his shop in Garden Grove. I got there first thing in the morning only for Henry to unapologetically tell me that the parts hadn’t arrived yet and that I would have to come back the next day. He could have at least called me to inform me of the delay, saving me the time and expense of driving to his shop and missing a day of work. But again, I was desperate, so I agreed to come back the next day. Now, going into the job, all Henry knew about my car was what I, a layperson, communicated to him from the Hyundai dealership. When I arrived the next day, he was prepared to go to work replacing the clutch based on that information alone, without test driving my car to confirm the diagnosis. This seemed pretty sloppy to me, so I asked him if he could first drive my car before going to work on it. This aggravated him; he huffed and puffed, but I insisted. We went out on the road, him behind the wheel, me in the passenger’s seat. He went through all the gears, listened to the noise the car was making (a grinding noise under load, which the dealership diagnosed as a bad throw-out bearing), and confirmed that I needed a new clutch. We drove back to his shop, and I left the car with him. This was at 8:00 a.m. Nine hours later, at 5:00 p.m., he called me to let me know my car was ready. When I get there, he tells me to sit down (not a good sign). He then tells me that my problem wasn’t the clutch after all. It was the TRANSMISSION. He replaced the old clutch with the new one, but the car was still making the noise. So, obviously, this guy is totally incompetent (as are the guys at the Hyundai dealership). A competent mechanic should have been able to know whether my issue was the clutch or the transmission by driving the car and listening to the noise relative to when the clutch was engaged (I figured this out myself by doing 20 minutes’ research on the internet). It shouldn’t have taken an entire day’s work replacing the clutch to find out that the problem was the transmission. But here’s the kicker. Henry doesn’t know how to rebuild or replace manual transmissions! So he wanted to stick me with the bill ($850) for something I didn’t actually need (the clutch), then send me on my way without making it right (fixing the transmission). He was stupid enough to give me the keys before I paid. As soon as he did, I walked out of his shop, got in my car and drove off.My point is, if this guy was a competent mechanic, he would have known my issue was the transmission from the beginning, saved me (and himself) the time and expense of replacing the clutch, and sent me to a transmission shop (which on his website, he claims to be).Oh, and in replacing my clutch, he royally messed up the steering column and/or suspension on my car. But I have no recourse for that, because I didn’t pay for the clutch, and he therefore refused to provide me with an invoice for the work. But knowing this guy, he probably would have denied it anyway.I saved up the money and went to Leon’s Transmission and got the job done right.BOTTOM LINE: This guy is inconsiderate and incompetent. I wouldnt trust him with a flat tire or an oil change. Stay far, far away from Pro Japanese Auto Repair.
