The best gastronomic experience in French cuisine. Nice place, wonderful people and the best service.
Stunning service, atmosphere, wine and food. Menu is from the south of France. Their hours are in flux b/c of covid changing regulation so call ahead.
Very good food ! Great selection of delicatessen. The place I go when I want to feel like I am in France . The owner is very friendly
We had an absolutely fabulous experience! Our food was wonderful and was take out! The lamb was specifically memorable, definitely a wow. We picked up a great bottle of wine from their shop next to the restaurant to pair with our meal, yum! The owners were so lovely as well. We will be making this a regular event!!
This place is my favorite restaurant. Of all restaurants I know I prefere it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to that place. everytime I want to go to a good dinner, this restaurant comes straightaway to my head. exeptionalgorgeous and food and a rich cuisine.generous staff members, and nice atmosphere. Also important, the bill is decent. I tell about this restaurant with no doubt.
Fantastic food and service. My 2 year old son dropped a spoon and one of the waiters ran over before one of us were barely standing up to retrieve it. The raviolis were great, the salad and smoked salmon were delicious, the sticky toffee was okay, weve had better (just being real). But overall a fantasic dining experience, would eat here again.
Great place...youll find things here that rarely are found in the states. Friendly and knowledgeable. Wine too
This spot obviously knows how to satisfy their clients. Regularly with a friendly approach. The food is conveniently priced, constantly delicious and clean.
We go here about once a month. Usually little to no wait for a table. Owners are extremely friendly. Food is delicious. Menu changes from time to time. Really great place for an fancy yet casual date.
Would definitely recommend visiting this place. Fantastic ambience, tasty food, excellent service. Fantastic work.
Ive loved dining in at Le Comptoir for a couple years so I shouldnt be surprised that their Take Out option is so delicious! The menu changes and Im always delighted with the result. Coq au vin, beef stew, lamb shank... all have left me wanting more (even though Im full). You wont be disappointed (but you need to order dinner before 5:45 and last pick up is at 6:00 during this pandemic.)
Decidedly French, minus Escargot. Apparently the menu changes often and it might be back on. The atmosphere is warm, casual and friendly. Exceptional appetizers! A sure thing for a fun night out with friends.
From French countryside to Paris decadence they cover it all excellently. Great food and wine, sophisticated atmosphere, a place to return.
The Ambiance is nice the staff is very helpful. We showed up on a Friday night I was still given a table. Food was very good. However the desert of the profiterol was a bit dry.
Went here when they first opened food was great service was also. Very quaint atmosphere. My daughter and her husband both of whom have lived in France consider it as authentic as you can get in Marin.
Awesome spot. I had no idea it was there. It literally feels like you step into a French market when you enter the doors. Their wine selection is great.
Fantastic service. Great food. The rotisserie pork ribs are not of this world. Ive had many and said f*** the fork, they deserve some tlc because the chef gave them just that. Great wine selection.Reserve a table or youre at the community table...or Le Comptoir.
The snobbery that met us at the door really turned us off. Too busy talking amongst selves to offer us a table, of which there were many. Many reviews of good food....surprised that hospitality was so horrible.
Have heard about this place and had to give a try.Food was top notch quality, perfectly cooked and served nicely. I really enjoyed this restaurant and the cuisine was interesting and different. Nice service at all.
Disappointed with quality of food especially given the atmosphere and prices. Most of the dishes were seasoned poorly yet there was no salt and pepper on the table or offered by the server.Steak was cooked well but barely seasoned, small portion. Fries were good and seemed to be the only thing with salt on them. Green beans were horribly overcooked (ready to be strained for baby food), squeeky, and unseasoned. We didnt eat them, told the server and were still charged for them. The little gem salad was dressed while the leaves were wet so it too was tasteless and bland. Again no salt or pepper offered. The shallot tart was good as was the salad that came with it.Overall not worth it, and too noisy if you are seated in the middle. If you dont offer salt and pepper you should be sure your seasoning is perfect. Also served a 10oz beer and charged for a pint.
Lamb shank and Minervois Le Vin de Plume. Amazing food and wine pairing!
Delicious food. Great atmosphere. Staff very friendly. Amazing place one of a kind
Very nice bistro in central San Rafael, with great food and service. Go to the attached little food shop and try a sample of the Dijon mustard they have on tap, and will sell to you by weight if you bring a container. Youll want to...0
I purchased a gift and when checking out the person checking me out, said that it would not be a problem if I bought the wrong size (as I was between 2 sizes). I asked for a gift receipt and she said it was too hard to generate and not to worry about it. Today (12/27) they tried to exchange the shoes for a different size, and the female cashier was apparently totally rude about it, and wouldnt make the exchange without a receipt. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN GOOD TO KNOW>>> and I would have gotten one if the person checking me out had the ability to do so.. but it was too hard. Get it together foot locker ... its not that hard.
Nice, modern atmosphere. Decent food, but nothing special. Steak is good but small. Fries underseasoned and overly crisp.
Both times visiting the food was excellent, first time the service was great, second time the service was terrible. Our waiter ignored us, would not even look at us, yet was overly friendly with tables around us. Commented to the owner, she gave an excuse about him having family problems. B.S. Skipped going here our last trip to the area.
This spot is fantastic! Good pricing, large dishes and the staff are regularly nice.
Plenty of imported products that are authentically from the regions stated. Excellent cheese selection also. Expensive but many items cannot simply be picked up elsewhere. Worth a vist.
Love the casual atmosphere and great food. A place to return to time and again.
Store is a must! Restaurant is good too. If you ade looking for french products dont look further. Owner is very nice.
Wonderful food and casual atmosphere. Great store associated with the restaurant with everything French!
Went to a dinner with friends to this restaurant for the first time. My husband has gluten allergy due to an autoimmune condition. The meal that he wanted did not seem to have gluten, however the waiter asked the chef and apparently it did have gluten in one of the garnishes. The waiter suggested a substitute and we gladly said yes. Then he came back with bad news from the chef - no substitutions! We asked if a garnish can be put on the side, and again he came back with a resolute NO. My husband had to choose something else. The waiter was quite upset by the whole situation, and was very nice to us. In case of the French chef I just cannot imagine what kind of jerk goes into the profession of caring for what people eat and creating good food if he thinks that a food allergy request is unacceptable. Also the food was mediocre, did not justify the diva behavior at all.
Im in France... Love it.. staff food1. French Onion Soup2. Little Jem Salad3. Half ChickenAnd winePerfect
Several really good dishes (mussels, steak frites, duck breast, pork loin). Try the chocolate hazelnut crisp for dessert. Visit the store (French fine foods and wine).
Le comptoir is awesome! We love the food and the service over there. And the side grocery store is perfect to bring some France home with you. The only negative experience we had was the creme brulee, dont get it. It was really dense and not custardy at all. Everything else was great and they took it off the bill so no big deal.
Warm, attentive service. Food was very good, I recommend the chicken and the ravioli. They have a wide selection of wine and an adjacent store with french wines and cheese.
Great servers, amazing food and the best wine list!
Great service. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. I had the pork chop and the pairing with the creamy mustard and tangy cabbage was wonderful. My partner had the duck and that was great as well. After dinner dessert was hazelnut crisp which lived up to its name by being surprisingly crispy. A very satisfying night out. Definitely recommend le comptoir for dinner. We went on a Monday, but I hear that it gets really busy on the weekends so if you want a more relaxed atmosphere you may want to go early in the week.
Service was lame. Did not know the menu on a least 2 interactions. Did not offer or mention specials. Slow. Food not very good. Worst dining experience in recent memory.
Terrific meal, gracious service. Fun atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Good food and service .
Delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere from from nice charming staff. Highly recommend.
Disappointed. Nice atmosphere with friendly, if amateurish, service. Food was carelessly prepared: Stem ends left on tomatoes; baguette with dense crumb, less-than-crisp crust, and little flavor; over seasoned beef tartare served with slightly stale toasts; over cooked, under salted pork loin was overwhelmed by sun dried tomato. Tart Tatin was tasty but pastry was undercooked and it was served a la mode when we requested whip cream only. Prices are very high for the quality of the food and experience.
Best burger in Marin County. Bone marrow, steaks, salads, all delicious. Excellent friendly service too.
Great food and really nice spot, cool that they have the shop connected to the restaurant... the cheese cooler is where I would hang out for the zombie apocalypse...
The mussels were amazing and the aoli with the fries were delicious!! Had a great time with my boyfriend and his parents
Excellent food and great people. Love the smells of food walking up to the door.
French. Tres French. Perfect sized menu, portion, execution. Wonderful little market attached to restaurant where you can find all sorts of unique French products.
Excellent, authentic French bistro food. Convenient to your favorite foreign films at the Rafael.
Very good french restaurant in downtown SR. Great wine selection and gourmet food! Perfect for a cozy date night.
I have been here several times and typically it is great service and food. Today was horrible. The order was wrong. All of the food was cold, cold fries, cold green beans and worst of all cold burgers. The waitress immediately blames the cooks for the incorrect order and in her attempt to look at my burger she touched it. So unsanitary and killed my appetite. Based off of the experience tonight I would of given 1 star but due to my previous experiences that were positive I gave it 3. We will not be going back which is unfortunate as we were turning into regulars.
Best new-ish restaurant in San Rafael. Great French bistro classics, steak fritos, rotisserie chicken, steamed mussels and others. It can get pretty noisy when the service gets going, it can be very difficult to carry a conversation, the nice beverage selection and well prepared menu items will most likely still make it worthwhile to people that dont like having to lean into your table mate to avoid yelling.
Close but dry chicken. Mussles too much garlic. They need to check the food that leaves the kitchen.
Wonderful new French bistro & addition to the San Rafael / Marin restaurant scene. The steak au poivre is amazing and the French fries completely decadent. Friendly staff, reasonable prices, love this place.
Excellent food and customer service.
Tried this for first time tonight. Saturday night, very busy and we had high expectations. I had the sole, my BF had the chicken. We had a house salad and side of asparagus. I was hoping it would be excellent but it really wasnt. first of all, the bread they serve isnt the kind of bread that has a crunch when you bite into it... its more of a soggy-crusted-gnaw-your-way-through-it bread. Some people may like that kind of bread I guess... we dont. My sole was okay but I swear, if I had even 3oz of sole Id be surprised... really meager portion and not extraordinary in any way. My BFs chicken was okay but the breast meat wasnt as moist as it should have been. It definitely needed the sauce they provided to moisten it up. And, the asparagus was done okay but we mainly had middle bits.. not tips. I did notice the couple next to us got their asparagus and they had lots more tips... guess we were unlucky. We may give it another try after its had a chance to work out the kinks. They definitely need to get an alternate bread though.
Gracious service, excellent food and reasonable prices. We will be frequent flyers at this spot.
My anticipation for trying Le Comptoir has been building for more than two years. I recently celebrated my birthday here with three others. We started off with a cheese and charcuterie board consisting of smoked duck breast, Bresaola, and a pork pâté, and two cheeses (which I can’t eat, as I’m dairy free, unfortunately), cornichons, pickled onion, and a hot dijon mustard . The meats are made in-house, but even so, the quantities felt sparse for the nearly $50 price. The pâté was my favorite and most flavorful - creamy and herbaceous. My entree was the goat stew with polenta - the goat had delicious, deep, fatty flavor and seasonings in a tomato base and the polenta was very creamy, though not much seasoning. I highly recommend this dish. The hangar steak was undersized, 4-5 ounces, pre-cut and perfectly medium rare, and smothered in blue cheese sauce, which concealed the taste of the meat entirely. It came with a generous portion of fries, but they were very disappointing —soggy, not crisp. My mother’s salmon was moist (and she ordered it with fries, instead of spinach that it comes with). My father ordered the duck confit, which was perfectly cooked, great flavor, and a generous size. It came with lentils. We also ordered a side of cauliflower —it was charred black in some areas and was served in large chunks that were difficult to cut into individual portions. I don’t recommend it. The other side dish we ordered was the braised cabbage—vinegary, buttery, umami—I couldn’t get enough of it. Order it! For dessert, we had the profiteroles —three large ones poured over in lots of milk chocolate. It was described by my dining mates as standard. Overall, this place has hits with misses. The shop (connected to the restaurant) is a lot more special than the restaurant itself, with imported gourmet goods, including cheese and wine. This place is worth a visit on its own.
Delicious food, great wine, fast and friendly service. The market next door has some really tasty items as well.
First time for French food and I loved it and the atmosphere.
Fantastic food and lovely atmosphere. A gem in San Rafael.
Very good food for a very good price
Expertly prepared, delicious food. Wonderful wines, reasonable prices.
Very accommodating, excellent food and the staff was having a great time providing customer service.
Great service and great food!
Fabulous addition to downtown San Rafael in the old Sabor de Spain location at 4th and C, with unique cheeses only found in the US at Le Comptoir (The Counter). Wonderful selection of French (of course!) wines to complement the cheeses. San Rafael / Marin has needed a restaurant like this for a long time and Im glad Le Comptoir has opened.Meals are delicious with some of the best beef Bourguignon I have ever had. Prices are very reasonable -- $22 for a 9 oz steak -- and service is efficient and friendly. Crowd goes until 10-11 pm each evening, with a lively bar scene spilling out on the street later at night when its warm enough. Very popular already and reservations are a must.Highly recommended!
Great service and great food!
Absolutely fantastic food. The owner is a quite a character as well.
Quality food and a great experience
We loved dining at Le Comptoir. The staff was on point. The owner was charming. He greeted us, even visiting our table during the meal to check-in while he was busy expediting the dishes. The beet salad with creamy blue cheese pieces and a tarragon dressing was superb. The little gems salad plentiful and crisp. My husband loved the Steak Frites au Poivre, I had the melt-in-your-mouth Beef Bourguignon served with the creameist polenta. The portions were a bit uneven, ours were ample but our neighbors fish entree looked small, and he agreed it was. The owners have created a friendly open restaurant with good service and excellent bistro food. Nice wine list accompanies the menu with many French and California sections to choose from. We were very happy with our experience. San Rafael needed a good restaurant! We will be going back soon!
Love it here. A touch of France.
Authentic and amazing food at reasonable prices. Just what San Rafael was missing.
Great service, food and drink
