Neat little grocery store! And they have all the ingredients for making sushi at home, and the salmon is especially good
Honestly, the best sashimi I’ve ever had in Bay Area with unbeatable price. You could order the sashimi at the very back of the store. It could be busy over the weekend, so you might have to wait 10-20 minutes after you order. But I think, the quality and the price would totally make the waiting worth it!
Great supermarket for Japanese food! Sashimi sliced to order and hot Bento boxes as well. Come at 4pm for the half off sale.
I am a tourist from Dublin CA, and this is a great Japanese grocery store. You can get all kinds of goodies for a affordable price.
TLDR: If youre going only for sashimi, just walk straight back to the seafood counter and get into that line to put in your order ASAP (~15-25 min wait). I really enjoyed the Hamachi (yellowtail), salmon, toro and Kanpachi(Amberjack). Avoid coming around 4pm unless you want 1/2 priced hot food items. Ordering about 1/2 lb of fish per person should be more than enough.Came here for the first time on a Saturday to get sashimi (~4pm) and was surprised by the long line. Researched while in line and learned the line was due to the half priced hot food items put out after 4pm, but by the time I got into the store (4:20pm) it was pretty much all gone (hot food and pre-made refrigerated items). Its all quiet chaotic inside (small store with lots of people), but I just followed a guy that seemed to know what he was doing and listened to how he ordered and copied him 😂 Dont be afraid to ask for recommendations from the counter staff when you go to order! Theyre really friendly and I enjoyed their recommendations of toro and Kanpachi. The only things I didnt like were that pickled ginger wasnt included (you can buy it for ~$0.50 from the refrigerated section to the right of the counter), you cant wander too far from the counter because its hard to hear them calling out names (they have no speaker system or monitor to show whos order is ready for pick up) and the regular tuna option was not something Id order again.
I love this market. Even though we live in south bay area and I hate driving but its still worth the 30 min trip to get the fresh sashimi, wonderful dons. Awesome service and gorgeous cashier.
Great customer service. Friendly employees. There is a line to get in after 4pm as they have specials but it clears out after 15 mins.
I’ve tried the online order pickup. Even though Saturday is very crowded, I skipped the long lines by ordering on their website the night before. Then called them when I arrived and they brought my groceries to my car window. Wear a mask!I’ve also requested chopsticks so that I could eat the sashimi in the car on the spot. It doesn’t come with soy sauce, so make sure to ask.Best freshly handmade udon noodles I’ve had. Very easy to make. Just boil a packet of their kombu dashi, enough water to fill a bowl, a tablespoon of soy sauce, a tablespoon of mirin, and a few dashes of salt to make a delicious soup base. Add some green onions and inari age for garnish. If you have leftover sashimi from the day before, you can cook them to add as a topping. They have a handmade ramen noodles, and handmade soba noodles as well. I can’t wait to try next time.Just a small note, they forgot one of my dashi packet orders which costed about $3. Not a big deal since I ordered 2 and at least got one.
I only ordered sashimi from here and was not able to go in to do any grocery shopping. There was a long line that appeared to move along decently due social distancing. Some pro advice is to order online or call them if the ordering system is closed for the day. Call them once you arrive to let them know youve arrived and they will call you into the store to pay for it. Theres no need to wait in the line for food pick up.As for the food, the salmon and hamachi were quite good. Texture was above average and the flavor popped. Unfortunately, we found a bone in one of the salmon pieces. The amberjack and shrimp were tasty. The clam salad was too mayo-ey (could be good if thats your thing) and didnt have much clam taste to it.
Dont go too early when it just opened, all the hot food are not ready and when you tried to wait patiently and stay away from the isle for the staff to load the hot food, one of the staff were rude yelling me and other customers to wait at the other side of the area. Oh were not blocking the isle and the problem is that when your food was not there we have to wait or leave. Ive been waiting for over 15 mins so I dont wait any longer for the hot food and pay and leave right away. ALL FOOD SHOULD BE READY WHEN YOUR SHOP IS OPENED!!! If food was ready we dont have to wait and block your way!!!
The food is decent but salty and they still require masks even though they dont work at preventing anything as stated on their labels.
Food and products are good, small store but one of the employee was rude towards my wife when she simply asked if there is a bathroom. Completely ruined the experience.
Everyone was super nice. If you are ordering a sushi platter would recommend placing the order online early in the morning for pick up later in the day
Definitely a must when in downtown San Mateo and want a quick, affordable, and super tasty lunch!!! Wide selection of ready-to-eat hot foods like chicken karaage, potato croquettes, and salmon teriyaki bowls, as well as lots of sushi options like salmon/tuna/hamachi sashimi, chirashi bowls, and even rolls like California rolls (with the option of real crab!). Would for sure come back whenever I am back here!
Very fresh and reasonably priced sashimi, custom ordered in the back!
I usually like this store, because the staff is courteous and the grocery selection (mainly Japanese) is pretty good. But after my shopping trip last week, I’m not much a fan anymore. When shopping, I saw a new brand, and new flavor of green tea ice cream; so I decided to try it. When I opened the container at home, I was shocked! Not only there was no plastic seal, the container was only 3/4 filled. Looked like it was tampered with? I can’t believe I paid $8.50 for it.In addition, the bok choy was full of aphids. Yuck!
Fish are really fresh and of high quality. Arguably the best outside Hokkaido. Love the blue fin tuna and Hamachi (yellowtail). If you want authentic Japanese groceries, this is the place.
Great variety! Especially sashimi
Clean. Well stocked. Very fresh fish. Friendly and helpful staff.
Sashimi was awesome. Although could be a bit of a wait.
Delighted to finally get here. Wonderful Japanese market sushi was beyond compare. Cant wait to spend more time there
Great fresh fish that can be sashimi sliced
So fortunate to get to live close to Suruki. Excellent selection of sashimi and Asian groceries at a reasonable price. Love coming here on a weekly basis.
Good price, servic, hope open longer hours.
Arrived at 330pm, I did not there was a sale after 4pm for prepackaged hot food as I stood in line. Just wanted to get general groceries so walk passed the line and in. Selection of food overwhelm my excitement 😋, means I end up buying more, lol. Though the store is busy everytime I go, it maintain cleanliness.
Excellent fish counter with cut-to-order sashimi. Recommend you order a day ahead via the website.
Small Japanese local supermarket that does sashimi and fresh fish. You order at the counter for sashimi and they make a whole platter for you. They had yellowtail, tuna, toro, salmon and fresh scallops as well.
A really lovely little market with a diverse range in a clean space
No bathroom, pay parking, but fish is great. Not much organic too. Prepared meals are very reasonable.
I gave 4 stars before, because I did the review with wrong market. I love this market, because they carry high quality food, especially the sashimi. Highly recommend.
Great food. Broad selection. Can be pricey.
Top quality Japanese market for all your homemade sushi needs. 👅
Excellent quality and selection at a family-owned and operated Japanese market. Full service seafood counter in the back, and house made prepared foods both hot and cold up front. Most popular feature is probably the discounted prepared foods sale that takes place every evening one hour before closing when marked items are fifty percent off!During SIP, entrance and exit is directional and safety notices are clearly and prominently placed. Glad to support a local business with such deep ties to the community!
Great meat with awesome deals. They close too early, 5pm on Saturday.
Full of unique stuff. Great sashimi deli to go.
Best quick Japanese food in Down town San Mateo
Affordable and reasonable to-go fresh sashimi. Cannot go wrong. Long line for the after 4 pm half price cooked food. Be ready.
Great selection of products, top notch bento, sushi, and mochi
Japanese supermarket with lots of Japanese sweets and breads, ready-to-prepare hotpot trays, bento and sushi! Loved it~ Ive also heard at 6pm the bento that are left go 50%off? Ill have to go and check next time ^^ but it would explain why last time at 540 we saw a line forming outside of the supermarket!
Be prepared to line up for entry. Very good covid compliance and mask use. Safe shopping environment that isnt overcrowded even though the store is not large. And great sashimi and other Japanese groceries!!
Just tried the rice spam and egg. And a real crab california role! Delicious as always. Best market ive ever been to. I have come here for years and will continue to do so. Great place. My brother used to know the owner, and he hooked me up with this place long ago. Super happy for that 🙏
One of my favorite Japanese market in Bay Area, fish is fresh and good, price is ok.
Great Japanese market with amazing fish. Theyll even cut it down into sashimi slices for you. A bit of a line, but they do a good job of moving people thru. Excellent fresh items and hard to find frozen goods
Sashimi platter is great and staff called when it was ready.
Best place for great sashimi at an reasonable cost. Great quality and fresh. I love grabbing food and make your own sushi at home. Temaki style.
Suruki is a great Japanese markets in Downtown San Mateo. They have good quality fish for sashimi, and they still do their daily special of half price on prepared sushi and dishes 1 hour before closing. This is good, but you need to get there early and line up for the half off special. Otherwise, they carry a good amount of meat, fish, produce, and Japanese specific goods. They also have a good selection of Sake and Shochu, and on occasion offer some very good discounts on Sake and Shochu. Ive been able to find $20-$35 bottles for $12-$14 pretty regularly going to Suruki.
Great little gourmet Japanese Market. Has prepared food, mainly fish and sushi. A little pricy. Love the prepared Salmon, great to pick up and take home for dinner, or enjoy it for lunch
They have a good selection of excellent products. Friendly and helpful staff make a visit to the store a pleasurable experience
Fresh sashimi blocks!! They have very good selection of Japanese groceries.
Love this place. Fish and meats are fresh and the sizes of the packs are just about right for a fam of 3. Prices are not expensive. Lunch packs taste good. Some of my favorite crunchy snack packs are a little pricey but they taste great. Thanks to one sale staff who suggested them when asked❤
Nice option of fresh fish.
Quality fresh food, good variety,
Best Japanese market ever. They have an amazing selection of sushi/ sashimi grade fish, Japanese treats and fresh produce.
Wonderful Japanese market.
I heard about this legendary little Supermarket in the peninsula for years...especially the Sashimi, how fresh it is and what a great bargain one gets.Yup, yup...yup. True #true True!Id say this is the best Sashimi I got from a supermarket in the Bay Area. IMHO the other stores dont compare. Make sure you go to the back; where the fish station is, so you can order your own custom Sashimi sampler. You wont be disappointed! Unfortunately I havent been here early enough to try some of the other dishes. Saruki is also experimenting with an on-line ordering system during the pandemic. #2020 I hope it works out!Otherwise this is your standard Japanese supermarket with a healthy selection of Japanese goods.
I love this place, I can always find hard to find Japanese items and food...
This place was awesome wish we had a market like this in my neighborhood.
The best Japanese supermarket in Downtown San Mateo to find many excellent Japanese products, food, and drinks to buy. 🍙🍜🍡🍱🍛🍣🍤🍢🍘🥢
This place gives first-rate service as well as yummy meals. One of my favourite spots around town. The meals came out quickly and the prices are affordable. Recommended.
Always excellent service, amazing value, forever bringing home great sushi, and I’ve purchased two kitchen appliances here. Both a Tiger rice cooker and a hot water dispenser, totally competitive price and insightful advice; no buyers remorse. Would highly recommend.
This is a terrific Japanese market with Fresh produce and meat as well as shelf staples and frozen foods. The quick order food right next door is also outstanding.
A great grocery store with specials (half off bento boxes, including sashimi) after 6 pm.
They have the best fish for sushi in Bay area! Its fresher and tastier than any other Japanese supermarket in Bay area. Make sure to go early if you want good sushi fish.
Come here for their sashimi bar. Excellent quality and reasonable prices. I have stopped getting sashimi in any restaurant after I discovered this place.
Very fresh sushi grade fish of many kinds. Large selection of different Japanese grocery items. Pricy!
Been coming to Suruki since I was in high school. Best bento boxes and freshest fish around. Great produce as well!
Local japanese market that has most everything japanese. They also have bento boxes ready to go. Parking on the street or a lot around the corner.
For a small local market, it carries great selection.
A San Mateo classic. Top notch stuff, great workers, and decent prices (better than Nijiya)
Had a great first experience here. I ordered online and they offer curbside pickup option. The nigiri set is not bad for the price. The spam musubi, however, was mostly rice with a thin piece of burnt/overcooked spam, wouldnt recommend it. Was able to go in and buy a few snacks/ramen as well (looks like they have a good selection). Workers are very friendly/polite.
Delicious, fresh, high quality sushi or sashimi consistently for years and years.
Best Japanese market in the bay.
The line moves fast.
Update: They reopened and are just as busy as ever. Strawberry cake is really good, in roll or sandwich formThey have oyster sauce and other random Asian sauces not just Japanese. Like Vietnamese rice wraps. I go for the sashimi and fresh seafood
This place has been my favorite place to shop in downtown San mateo. I can get my favorite Japanese beers/drinks and the food/snacks are great. The workers are very friendly
Its small but has enough Japanese stuff for you to get it if you dont feel like driving to South Bay for the larger Japanese supermarkets. The prices are higher but thats the price to pay for convenience.
The wide variety of Japanese snacks and sake makes it all worth it to visit this store.
Come here for their half priced sushi. Weekdays and Saturday is 6pm, Sunday is 5:30pm. They mark the boxes and people line up. First come first serve. Great price though, totally worth it.They also carry my favorite eggs. Theyre not at most stores but they have the creamiest yolks.
Good service, wide range of product selection. You can now place your order for curb-side pickup.
Love their selection of asian produce and fish.
