A must try. The fish here is beyond fresh. Great sake selection too. I love that theres pre-made sushi on one side and Fresh fish that they prepare sashimi style on the other - something for every sushi lover. I love their Bluefin Tuna. Most of the fish/seafood is shipped straight from Japan. The place was opened by a sushi master and you can tell. The entrance is on the back side of the building.
I am telling you, don’t go there, it’s so not worth it. This place is so chaotic that you won’t know where to get your sushi and sashimi inside the store. The shelves were almost empty when they first opened their door at 11:30am. You have to wait for a long time before they would bring out more sushi. The sashimi line is even longer and I don’t understand what is wait for. When we were there, Once a few sushi packages triggered out, a mob just took over and cleaned out the refrigerator leaving us with nothing. We have to wait for the second wave. This is like a refugee camp where everyone is fighting for food. And after all that hustling, another line waits you to pay. And if you don’t have either cash, Visa or Master card you’re out of luck for getting your sushi home. Are the sushi and sashimi are really that good? No!!!! Other sushi places Kabuki and Mikomi are better.
The fish here is great. You can get sashimi grade salmon or tuna for sure. But you must stand in line for at least 45 minutes. Ive heard customers bragging about waiting for 2 hours. 3 stars because Yama is the only person who prepares the fish. He could easily hire another person to help which would speed things up. This is an easy logistical problem to solve.
Came in for some grab and go sushi. Had Tuna Nigiri. It was incredible. Will be coming back to pick up fish from here for our at home sushi nights from now on.
Sushi for under $8 each small platter!!!! The fish is super fresh and I always come here if I need my fix for sashimi:)
Fresh fish with good price! Our go-to place when try to make sushi on our own.
I got two items: salmon avocado roll and tuna rolls. These were located at the fridge close to the cashier. The fish was definitely fresh. Despite the rice not being flavored, you get most of the flavor from the fish itself.Overall, 5/5 for both rolls. Also, the place was following safety guidelines so +1 star!
Im such a fan of Yama Seafood!! There is a variety of fish sold individually wrapped at different price points so you can pick and choose your cuts and theyll cut it up into sashimi for you. There is a long line and it may make you to leave and believe me thats really not what you want, you will realize that the wait really worth it.
First time here nice small place for a quick eat my girl took me here she use to go here to pick up some food for work
Mr. Yama is so nice!! Great fresh sushi
Excellent quality fish and very friendly staff. There’s a large variety of fish as well as Japanese snacks, beer, and cooking supplies.Usually a pretty decent wait but always worth it. They always have a moderate supply of tuna or salmon as well as fish eggs! They now accept credit and debit cards but prefer cash.Overall, I highly recommend this plate for some fresh high quality fish at a decent price.
Very mom and pop-ish feeling. Great customer service. Such kind people. I bought sashimi salmon, tuna. Yellowtail, tuna, and California rolls. All great price and delicious! Would definitely come back!! They ask you to pick the slab of sashimi first, then they weigh it, and then they can cut for you or you cut yourself at home :)
Love love their California rolls! Fish is super fresh and reasonably priced!
Love the salmon here, but best if you get it before 1-2pm. Otherwise, their california rolls are tasty all day. Can be quite a line to order from the counter, and then another line to pay, so be ready to wait.
I love this little market. Ive been coming here for the last 3-4 years and brought loads of friends who are now repeat customers. The highlight of this market is the fresh raw seafood counter. They have salmon, ahi tuna, blue fin tuna, scallop, uni, etc. at the counter. They are very fresh. He offers to slice it for you. The store have rice, nori, seasoning, drinks and prepare sushi you can buy. First time making sushi with the super fresh fish from Yama Market.
Best hidden gem of San Gabriel for sushi! Yama-san is extremely hospitable to every single customer that comes through and takes his time to cut your sashimi and present it to you like restaurant quality. In terms of their cut rolls, I personally love their spicy tuna roll. Ive tried their salmon nigiri, salmon and avocado cut roll, eel cut roll; theyre all terrific. The busiest part is the line to the sashimi, which can get hectic during rush hours (after work hours). I went on a Monday afternoon around 2:30 and it was empty; perfect time to order sashimi. Yama-san was nice enough to provide some free slices of tuna.If you havent visited or tried this place, you must come and order sushi. Dont even bother with Mitsuwa market down the street because its not nearly as close to the freshness of the fish here. Plus, you can also come and buy Japanese grocery products here as well.
One of the best Japanese grocery market in San Gabriel Valley. The prices of items here is fair, and quality of food especially deli is good as well. A lot of customers come here for sashimi because of fresh cut sashimi. But I personally usually come here for Tamago, Avocado Roll, and Salmon Roll because it is excellent in my opinion.Overall, Yama Seafood is one of the best fresh sashimi, and I recommended people who want sashimi badly that comes at the morning in the weekday otherwise need to wait for a long time.
Best and freshest sushi / sashimi in town!!! They just redecorated and hired new staff.
Make sure to go early to get pre-made stuff in fridge!
Cheapest decent sushi in the area! Get there early, before the line !
Great place for fresh fish and excellent sushi lunch items.
All their fish and sea urchin is fresh. The owner is really nice and cuts up the fish you choose quick. The only time it takes long is when he is cutting the chunks off of the whole fish so that you can choose from the selection. Be prepared to wait 30 min to 1.5 hrs even. But it is so worth it. He had a selection of salmon, Scottish and Alaskan. We ordered both to compare the two. Scottish is a bit more dense and more reddish in color and the Alaskan (which I prefer) is more lighter in color and fatty. The sea urchin was very creamy and delicious and the California roll was perfect since some carbs were definitely needed with the raw fish. We ordered a side of masago and ikura as well! Also it is rude to tip in Japanese culture, so do not make the rookie mistake! It is nice because they provide bags of ice to set over your plates so that it remains in a good temperature wherever you decide to go eat it. I highly recommend!
What happen to this place.. I taste tap water in everything!
Love this place!! the California rolls are to die for. Mr Yama is the absolute best!! he always greets everyone with a huge smile and a well wish of returning. definitely recommend!!!!
Super great prices for sashimi! Always really busy. Come early if you want some sashimi cuts. They also have the greatest California rows, big and filled with stuffing. Theyre in the seperate fridge in front.
Amazing and cheap sashimi and seafood market. Be prepared to wait 30min plus if you want any sashimi cut though... Havent had any luck visiting when its not busy in the last few months
Fresh Sashimi for a really cheap price! I went to this place today for the first time and it was a small fish deli-like store that also sells some Japanese snack and sushi rolls. This place is definitely a mom and pop shop kind of place, so please be patient if there is a line. I went at an off time so there wasn’t one but the layout of the store is small, so I can imagine how packed it can get during busy hours. Especially because the sashimi is such a steal! There is the sweetest old man who works there. He is just the best! They give you a small ice bag to keep your fish cool when you leave so that the sashimi is still fresh and cold when you get home. The entrance can be kind of hidden but it is in the back of the building as well as the parking lot. It’s the door next to the Thai place. Will definitely be going back here!
About this place, you dont have to talk too much to describe the quality of seafood/sashimi here! Fresh is good!!!
Fresh sashimi/sushi, people are lined up when the store just opened but the wait it worth it!
Order sushi fish by the chunk (in chiller case labeled w price), sliced into nigiri upon request. Also rolls in the deli case. Take out only.
This place is that one local store that everyone nearby should know about or have already fallen in love. The fish here is great and the price is fair. Yama does a wonderful job with prepping and cutting the fresh sashimi to the point where its ready to eat (whenever the place isnt packed). Just be prepared to wait in line because thats the cost of having good fish. Ive visited about 6 times already, wait time can be anywhere from 5 mins - 1 hour usually.
Believe the other reviewers about the wait. I went on a Saturday morning thinking the other reviewer exaggerated about the wait but I was wrong. I arrived 10 minutes before opening and waited almost 2 hours. BUT and this is a big but... it was WORTH IT. It was soooooo good. I had cravings and a desire to go back for weeks. Go for the Scottish Salmon, Bluefin and Hamachi!!!
Always good sashimi at Yama..the Cali rolls are pretty good too.
Great place if you want to eat sashimi and rolls without the huff and puff of a restaurant and loud noise. Unfortunately for me, but great for the business, since the pandemic started, the wait for sashimi can be up to an hour (if not more)Mr. Yama is there every day slicing the sashimi for you. They also have a variety of rolls from Cali roll, tuna (spicy), salmon nigiri, salmon (spicy), salmon and avocado and more. I would suggest going during the non-rush hours of lunch time (11 - 1 pm) and dinner time (4:30 - 6:30 pm). This place is also a small Japanese convenience store if youre in need of Japanese condiments, sauces, or noodles.
Sashimi is always the freshest. Go early or they will run out.
Fairly quick and really good quality food. I bought extra and ate them the next day and it was amazing. Usually market bought fish starts to smell the next day, but it was so fresh that it was fine.Scallops come frozen, but they defrosted very quickly once taken out of fridge. I was nervous about those cuz Ive never prepared scallops at home, but it was soo easy
Fresh cut sashimi! Made California rolls fresh
Cant beat the price and quality. Ive been coming here for over five years and nothings changed, its perfect 👌
I was only in LA for 3 days but came here twice because we loved it so much. It is a little shop that has freshly made sushi rolls and fresh cuts of fish ready to be sold whole or sliced into sashimi for you. We tried the california roll (huge and so creamy, I normally dont like these but it was very different here), salmon avocado (yum!), spicy tuna (yum!!! the spicy part doesnt have mayo in it from what I could tell), and the tofu skin (yummmm). We also had the Scottish salmon and ahi tuna sashimi, which was delicious. We got there right at 11AM one day and there was already a line! We spent about 40 minutes waiting to get sashimi and for the rolls we wanted to come out, but its definitely worth it. For 5 packs of sushi rolls and a plate of sashimi and a drink, we spent ~$45. They also have $1 beers, which is perfect if you want to pair it with your sushi!
Ahhh our secret sushi, shashimi go to place
This place is a dream and a gem disguised as a hole in the wall independent seafood market. Its been my best kept secret of where I can get my better than restaurant sushi grade quality fish. Now, this place doesnt make rainbow rolls and different types of rolls etc. The only rolls you will see ate the simple seaweed wrapped mini rice n salmon rolls, cucumber rolls, avocado rolls and tuna rolls. They also have some cooked fish mini rolls etc. All wrapped by seaweed on the outside. Lots of items from Japan and items you would find at an Asian Supermarket or regular grocery store IF youre lucky. California Rolls? Lets just say theyre quite large more than avg and sell out in MINUTES. All rolls are never by customer order. Its only what they have available and put out.Now lets get to the star of this; the sushi grade fish. There is a LONG LINE. EVERY DAY. 100% WORTH THE WAIT. The avg. wait time is around 8 min per person in line. If there are people in front of you expect to wait at least an hour. It is only done by one expert and no one else. The other 2 gentleman are there assisting in either making fresh sushi rice, making rolls for the deli case and/ or helping keep the area sanitized. Now the fish; Ranging from different country region of Salmon (e.g., Scottish, Norwegian, etc.) Blue Fin Tuna, Ahi Tuna, Yellow Tail, etc. There are different sized portions behind the glass counter (picture a deli). You pick which portions of which kinds and the kind Ser will ask if you want them sliced as they will be wrapped with a lemon slice and a serving of wasabi. The cashier will put a lil mini bag of ice on top of each fresh serve to keep it fresh before you get home.My best advice is to arrive early as opening time of 11am. Place closes at 7pm except that at least by 3pm all rolls are sold out and hopefully the latest by 5pm sold out. Fish is served till closing. You will wait and theres nothing that can be done to speed things up. Show any disrespect and you will get a lot of silence and glares from the respectful community. Show respect and patience, as you will be served when your turn is up. They have sushi ware dishes, sake cups, bottles. This place does honest pricing more than a restaurant would. Only difference is you wont get fancy rolls here. Just real sushi grade quality seafood. Its the #1 place to go to if you plan on making your own rolls. Guaranteed. Its super jam packed busy. Every day. Good luck!
I have never been disappointed with the quality and freshness of the seafood I bought here. Yes sometimes the wait can be long, but it is well worth the wait. I have enthusiastically promoted Yama Seafood to a number of my friends and they are all regular customers now.
Best sushi grade fish market in town! Gotta get there early!
Loong wait but worth it! I ordered scottish salmon, yellow tail, and bluefin tuna. All are super fresh and juicy (not like some sushi restaurants where the fish are old and dry). I went on a saturday at 11:15 am and there were already 10 parties ahead of me. We did not get out until 1:20pm.When you get to the front of the line, you point to the fish you want (everything is precut into small pieces that weigh around 3 oz) and then Mr.Yama weighs it and cut them for you. It was onlt Mr. Yama doing all the work for the sashimi so you can imagine how long this could take. This man is super jolly!Delicious and budget friendly sashimi! I ordered 3 fish (less than 1lb) for around $30 and it was 2 meals for me. I will make this a monthly trip! Oh and dont forget to buy a bottle of sashimi soy sauce because soy sauce packets are not included.
I’m not a big fan of fish eggs but GOOD GOLLY it makes the California rolls pop. Even the avocado is a cut above... and the sashimi? Get out of town. For a reasonable price you get great quality with a super hole in the wall you know a cool secret place feeling. Definitely go!!!
Good quality sashimi
The BEST place to buy Japanese seafood ingredients. Quality is better than most high end restaurants. Yama-san is a living legend 👍
I like this supermarket because the fish is fresh. They will slice it for you. He is friendly. Please keep in mind that is a family owned market. So there are a lot of time a line. If you do not like to wait, please go somewhere else.
Usually california rolls run out before I went, but this time I managed to get some! Its delicious. Theres also salmon rolls and squid in this picture. The seaweed salad was from Mitsuwa.
Best to go early in the day to get best selection. I only take off one star because it can take a long time to get your order, but its worth it.
Great local market. Good customer service and very nice employees.
Fantastic little neighborhood Japanese grocery store that serves up fresh sushi and sashimi. They are constantly making fresh sushi so selection may vary as lots of people know about this place. You can view their fresh fish selections and pick out your pieces which they will slice up while you wait. On the grocery side they have a great selection considering how small it is. They dont carry any produce herr which is no big deal. I come for the sushi and sashimi.
Best California rolls you have ever eaten by far. Better than your favorite sushi place. I guarantee it. No California roll matches this one!!
Owner operated Sushi Market with nice selection of fish & sushi.
This was a nice shop, and the fish was excellent. Yeah, it was slow, but the boss was back there cutting the fish by himself. Its not a huge place, but they stock the essentials, and the prices are really fair. Yamas is now on my short list. I like this place.
Maki and California rolls delicious! Dont forget to check out the fish counter.
5 star for Best to-go sushi. 2 star, because I bought some pre-packaged items (pickled veggies and some other item) and they were both expired 3 months prior. I noticed it after I opened it to a funny smell and then checked the date behind it to find to expired. Overall 3 star.
Top quality sashimi at a great price 👌😘
Yama Seafood is open during Covid, but only the back door is unlocked. Come early to pick up fresh fish for poki or sashimi. Yama-san is limiting the amount of fish in the display so the fish might run out before the end of the day. As always, Yama Seafood service is one of the top in SVG 😎👌
Fast service, consistent good quality, and clean tasty food
I love this place. Fresh food. Been going here for over 20 years. Worth wait
Almost always a line but worthy the wait.
They have freshest sashimi daily! Also, try their California rolls, they cant keep up with stock. Customers just waiting for fresh batch to be put out.
Nice place. Value for money good food. Very helpful staff there. Just sometimes long queue. I go there in a weekly basis.
Really good quality and cheap price for sashimi.Worth to wait for long line!!!
The fish is really fresh but be prepared to wait. It gets really busy but you get quality food for a fair price.
The rolls were so tasty. Full of good flavor. Yama sang was greeting us very nicely. The girl on the cashier looked a bit cold but when I talk to her she was OK. My problem was I found a hair in my roll... I am hesitating to go back regardless of good review and the tasty rolls.
The only reason this place isnt 5 star is the wait and service time. The wait time is insane! My girlfriend and I came here 30 minutes after they opened and waited over an hour and a half for sushi. The line was almost out the door when we came and there was only one man cutting fish for the customers which is why it probably took so long. Would come back here but maybe on a random day so the wait isnt that long. Sushi is definitely great quality and price but the wait ...
The terrible attitude I received from cashier, can makes me never visit again!
Sashimi are so good
Mr. Yama does it all! He offers amazing, fresh sashimi for a great price and has been a total gem for locals. His California rolls are the the best!
Fresh sashimi!
The fish is good, it is not fresh, it is previously frozen like all sashimi in California. Pursuant to health laws any fish consumed raw must be frozen except some tuna that is usually frozen but may be aged at least ten days. So please shut up about how fresh the fish you eat is, its not. That being said, this little hole in the wall store has good sushi. Not great, but good. Prices reflect that. All that being said, 99% of all fish has parasites so you are eating parasites along with the flesh. Dont think about it, say thank you for US health laws.
Its open from 11-6 and thats it (closed on Tuesday). The fish is always great. Some days one fish stands out from the other but its always good. The California rolls are both cheap and the best Ive had. I try to come in when he opens because the line can be intense and it doesnt matter what day that is. Closing is another story. He closes at 6 but its more like 5:30. Ive been here when people are turned away at 5:45...
We love to get sashimi and rolls here. Price is pretty good. People are really nice and food is always fantastic. 6 Star seafood market!
The best sashimi you can get for the price. It’s unfortunate how long you have to wait some times. Often 30+ min wait. Really fresh rolls and fish though. 5-10 people in line and it will be 30-60 mins.
Excellent quality fish. Service is great and chopsticks are complimentary. If you need, they will give you a bag of ice. If you can, go between 1-2pm on weekdays for largest selection.
Great little market that has really good sushi grade fish. But get there early because it can sell out. Even the rolls move fast
Support Mom & Pop shops! Its a small grocery store but the real star is the sushi and fresh fish that everyone raves about. They open at 10 am, and when I got there at 10:30 am there was already another couple waiting to choose their fish. Get there early if you want a selection. This 2nd visit, I was only getting rolls, so I hovered around the display case and waited for them to make a Rainbow Roll and some Salmon Rolls.Their version of the Rainbow Roll is different from were used to. Instead of each piece highlight a different type of fish, its all Salmon with slivers of avocado, on top of a CA roll. It was still delicious, but it threw me off a bit.Their Salmon Roll are small cut rolls filled with Salmon and Avocado. No crab etc. Really fresh and you can taste the salmon. My first visit, we got a bunch of stuff from the fish case - Salmon, Tuna, box of Uni and it set us back around $30 I believe. Still really cheap!Come support this sweet old man and his store!
Great place to go for sushi/sashimi. Do note that Yama only has a set amount of fresh fish everyday. Once this is old out its done! Ive been coming here for awhile now and the o Ly negative I have is that its gotten too popular! The lines are much longer than they use to be. It you are willing to wait then you will be rewarded with quality, fresh sushi/sashimi without the high markup of a restaurant.
Been coming to Yama for years! Best place to get fresh sushi. Great place to get sushi platters for parties which has to be reserved in advance.
Really good worth trying
Fresh sashimi 😍 only one Mr. Yama but he accommodated all his customers as fast as he could. 11:15am on Sunday and the wait was about 40-50 minutes even though there were about 10-12 people in front of us.
Fantastic prices, excellent sashimi and sushi.
We have been coming here for years. Priceless to have a local shop that sells sashimi grade fish. Never had any issues with his product. Have some grocery items too. Sake selection has grown a bit since our last visit. Be prepared for long line if you are here just before dinner time. It can be hard to justify waiting 1 hour to buy yellow tail collar when Mitsuwa market is only few blocks away.
My go-to market for some fresh sashimi.
Best sushi ever ! I was recommended here. Just by looking at everything you can telling is going to taste delicious! You will be impressed !
