Amazing coffee and doughnut shop in the Hayes district of San Francisco. They have a huge range, and the vegan doughnuts are delicious! in my experience it’s good to get in early for the vegan doughnuts as they sell out fast. Loved the music choices being played. Coffee is good too, but the doughnuts are better !!
Friendly shop with a slightly modern flare. The kitchen and bathroom were clean and the donuts are AMAZING. I new they were rated well but I wasnt expecting every bite to be phenomenal. Definitely exceeded expectations.
Closer to frosted bagels than donuts. Very bready. Not very sweet.
Astounding array of delicious donut (and cronut) options! Staff was friendly and helpful when I was trying to figure out which things to try. I also had a great oat milk latte, which was surprisingly good given I typically don’t expect for donut shops to have good coffee, too. There is also a cute little seating area.
Yummy donuts, a bit dense and heavy for me but really good. You cant eat a whole one, or maybe you can! I think they are made to share. There are a variety of flavors that you can choose from, cute place to sit and eat and friendly service! I would recommend trying them!
Gourmet doughnuts that are decently priced. A very nice woman overheard me tell my son that I didn’t want a sprinkle doughnut and we were splitting a doughnut today so she stepped up and bought him a gift card. This is the kind of people that are patrons here. The staff made my son a delicious chocolate milk that I truly didn’t want to hand to him after sampling it. I never knew they had such excellent chocolate milk.
I actually visited this place 12 months ago when it first opened and it’s just as good as what it was last year! The classic vanilla is dense but not too heavy and of course absolutely delicious. The girl who served me was so sweet - we even sang along together to the store music. Will come back on my next trip to SF
Fantastic vegan donuts. These donuts are fluffy and light and delicious. The typical vegan donut is cakey and dense and ultimately flavorless. I always get the donuts with chocolate icing, but Im sure the other flavors are equally good. The only downside is that the donuts are basically $5; unfortunately, though, thats just the price of buying vegan food in SF.
This place is a game changer for donuts! The best fresh donuts you could possibly eat! We try not to get them too often (calories), but occasionally we splurge and enjoy!
$4 for a donut that shouldnt cost more than 1.50? Does being in SF mean that price is justifiable? It didnt taste any better than other donut shops. I didnt get some kind of outstanding service, neither did the server warm it up as i asked. I guess i missed why i should pay an arm and a leg...
Great doughnuts and great service! These are a thicker, cakier type of doughnut, but they’re very good! Also the honey oat milk latte is worth getting out of bed for. It’s amazing. The staff is friendly and there’s lots of room to hang out and work if you need to stay a while.
UNIQUE FLAVORS MIXED WITH CLASSICS.Vegan and gluten free options I got salted caramel chocolate and I tasted every flavor the cake itself was rich, hearty.$4.25 for an old fashioned donut is s not ridiculous however..these are substantially better way more ‘gourmet’ than the SF donut powerhouse Bobs which is only $1.25I also loved the space so much I wonder if they allow event hosting it’s spacious and to serve these wonderful gourmet donuts...that’s my kinda party.-IG Masturplater
Excellent donuts! Fresh and delicious.
If you’re in Hayes Valley you have to check out Johnny’s donuts definitely a staple in the community as you can see. I had the lemon poppyseed and blueberry with the cup of milk. Ambiance is perfect if you’re one of those people that like to come in grab a cup of coffee and do some work this spot is for you the atmosphere is amazing in Hayes Valley quiet smooth neighborhood can get a little rowdy at times but nothing too crazy definitely will be back at@furiousRobinson
Johnny has BIG donuts (50% larger than your typical donuts!)Got the zebra and glazed donuts. They are on the pricey side but they are good and thiccc! Each donut was warm, fluffy and yummy.
I work in the area about 2 blocks away from Johnnys Doughnuts but never gave it a try until last month. Im a huge creme-filled donut lover and their Bismark seemed to have filled that option for me.All of their other doughnuts are great but I really wanted to love Johnnys Bismark. 3 of the 4 times Ive gotten it, it was labeled as vanilla creme filled chocolate Bismark. The first two times I thought it was what vanilla was but you cant fool the tongue--it was tart like lime-key lime but I thought okay maybe this is how their vanilla is. The third time was not the case, the difference was day and night. An ACTUAL vanilla-creme filled Bismark. Fourth time was the third strike, nothing I could do about it but take the refund.I was told that because the creme batter is identical sometimes they make the mistake of filling the wrong donut...If youre vegan they have good doughnuts but if youre looking for a creme filled donut, you can bet the risk of getting a mislabeled creme filled or you can look elsewhere.
The donuts are made in an open kitchen. You can watch the magic happen while you wait in line to decide. The dough is dense and rich. There are unique flavors, like passion fruit. The atmosphere is nice. There are tables with good lighting to enjoy your pastry. I also like that the espresso drinks are sweetened with donut glaze! Thats so interesting and fun. Theres also wifi and metered parking nearby. Sunday mornings are a good time to hit this place up.
Ive been to over 100 doughnut shops and this one is amongst the most unique ones. They use a potato-based dough that gives extra density to their raised donuts, while maintaining the delicacy youd expect from them. If you like raised donuts that are light as air, these might not be for you, but personally I love the extra chew. Their cake donuts incorporate some excellent spices in the base, and theyre also pretty thick. One of the best donuts Ive had in recent memory was their cinnamon roll, with lots of spices and a subtle amount of raisins (which I didnt expect to love). They also make vegan raised donuts/cinnamon rolls, which suprisingly dont sacrifice any quality of taste compared to the rest of the donuts. Lastly, they do a daily crodough. They are pretty good, but thats where Id prefer to have the light, buttery texture of cronuts Ive had elsewhere, instead of the extra density. Overall, this is an excellent donut shop that you shouldnt overlook!
Insane good doughnuts!!! They charge a premium price for their creations, but let me say how it is really worth every penny. Ive been forever spoiled now, lol. If you have not been here yet, I highly recommend you give them a visit, you wont regret it.
The staff was so friendly and the donuts are amazing! They are so big and good. The whole family loved them!Note: nut free donuts! 💕
My favorite in town! They have vegan vanilla and chocolate options and even cinnamon rolls on Sundays. And the nicest people!
Good donuts and other pastries, but nothing extraordinary for the price. Unless youre a super sweets lover, 1 of anything here is more than enough to share with someone. Love the open kitchen set up and the aroma of freshly baked goods as you enter. The staff is always so friendly, always a plus.
Oh goodness ! This donut, cronut thing is crazy good! Very helpful staff too.
Look watch out here the mocha is incredible the donuts are unstoppable and the staff is kind.
Best donuts Ive ever eaten so far.
Dont miss the cronuts (think thats what theyre called). A combo of filled donut and croissant, big and yummy 😋
Im a huge apple fritter fan which was I was so excited to try out Johnnys Donuts given their very high ratings. Unfortunately, i discovered that the apple fritters at Johnnys to be much too hard, overly fried and with very little apple. I wish I could say it was just one batch, but Ive gone multiple weekends in a row and theyre always like this.
I get the vegan doughnuts ...but 7 out of 10 times theyre not cooked well. The oil drips when you bite into it. Kinda gross. When they have been well cooked theyre delish. Hit and miss for me.
Great handmade doughnuts. One of the best places in San Francisco for unique doughnuts. Definitely worth a visit if you are a doughnut lover.
Donuts are big and very good.
Amazing donuts and great customer service it was my first time there and the lady that help me took her time and told me all about there donuts and help me pick out the best ones
Great doughnuts pricy however they make fantastic quality treats.
Their doughnuts are huge, pricey, fantastic, and lastly, they are WORTH IT!Do not delay, try one today!
Great donuts and decent (and cheap!!!l coffee! Also a very friendly staff both AM and PM. I love this place.
I love Johnnys doughnuts. Especially the old fashioned- they add a little spice to the batter and it makes for such a flavorful doughnut. Their raised doughnuts are also great and they come up with amazing fruit icings. I just tried the citrus rosemary icing - YUM!
While staying at the Inn at the Opera we walked across the street every morning for these incredible donuts. They are large, flavorful - actually, they are perfect. The best donuts I have ever had, and I have had a lot!!
They make the best chocolate croghnuts but you can never get them, they only sell them on Friday and Saturday Ive been at 10 And their sold out and I just woke up at 7 to go get them at 8 and they tell me they havent made them yet, who the hell is running this, I just want my chocolatey goodness, this is the 4th weekend in a row Ive done this and still no luck, one week they werent open at all. Will happily up to 5* if I get my chocolatey goodnessUpdate, I got them
Johnnys is my absolute favorite! Chocolate crodough👌🏻
An unexpected gem in Hayes Valley. The donuts were exceptional in my standard. I will definitely want to go back.
I love this place super friendly, hospital clean, and the best doughnuts I ever had they are bigger then most and just made right always fresh
Wow. I was pleasantly surprised sumubling in on this place!! Nothing I love more then my doughnuts! And so, holy cow these doughnuts are amazing. The vegan ones all the dairy is replaced with sweet potato and its mind blowing how awesome these doughnuts. They are fluffy and yet dense! It doesnt taste overly sugary! And the the coffee is great to. The the service was amazing., The staff was pleasant and friendly. The atomosphere is beautiful with the white and semi classic but sleek look! Wouldnt mind having one closer my way!! But will definitely be going back!!
$4 Doughnuts?! Sign me up! Tasty 😋
Its to expensive for the taste of the vegan donut and coffee tasted burn. I will not return. I never do reviews but it was to high-price to taste like this a waste of money I learned my lesson.
Best apple fritter you’ll ever eat
One of the best donut Ive had
Pricey but SO good. The chocolate crodough is heacen
Thick and Rich mascarpone filled doughnuts and really strong iced coffee, and latte. Visiting for a day and was a good light breakfast start.
I havent had better tasting donuts anywhere else.
Best donuts in SF!! The bizmark and crodough are super good and HUGE!
Great, high quality donuts. Honestly, a little pricey, so you have to be comfortable with a different donut value proposition than you are probably used to.
Someone brought a box to work.. I’m really staying away from empty carbs but The chocolate old fashion was the best doughnut I’ve ever had in my life and I’ve eaten a lot of donuts. And everything in the box looks fantastic
The doughnuts are so delicious and they taste so fresh
Delicious doughnuts
Great doughnuts :) I like the old fashioned with a chocolate glaze the best and the staff there are very nice.
It’s an upscale donut shop. No smell of slightly stale grease or orange handle pot coffee. You walk in and smell the ingredients. The fresh ground coffee. The sugar of the glaze. Then the raspberry filling and lemon glaze smell waft over. The flavors are real and true. Nothing artificial about them. The vanilla glaze has the beans (those little spots in the white glaze) in it, giving the glaze and donut a rich and deeper flavor. The only complaint, which isn’t a complaint at all, is that the donuts are large. Sometimes it’s fun to try two flavors, but with the generous sizes, that’s just too much donut.
GIANT donuts perfectly done! Great staff, great selection.
Im still dreaming of the Choc. CRODOUGH I had last year! I broke down and asked if they ship-not yet. Im now looking for flights just to get me a CRODOUGH fix. And, fyi when I found Smitty had simply packed the one I bought him - I did. I ate it! It was delicious! Smashed and a day later.. Im a fan! Oh, the service was excellent too.
My coworker just gave me a wheat free 🍎 fritter. OMG 😲 I will be a customer Forever!!!
Service is always prompt even when they have a full house. Definitely worth a return visit. The place has a great feel to it. Reminds me of a place in New York I liked to visit.
Delicious and unique. The fritters are terrific, and all of the different doughnut glazes and fruit fillings are perfectly sweet and fresh. And the coffee... Get a Mocha with homemade chocolate sauce! Well worth it. Go early and get em fresh!
Spacious place, often empty with good donuts and coffee. Recommend when you need to work on weekends. On the downside (reason for the 3 stars): music is a bit loud and the matcha late was really not good. 😔
Ive been here a few times, and the staff are wonderful and doughnuts are great. The two staff working the afternoon of June 6th, were so lovely and helpful. Ill be back
Went only once, but their doughnuts are quite good, will come back for more ;-)
I was lucky to come when I did at 10am on a Sunday morning. When I first asked for the Wheat Free Fritter Thang, I was told it “wasn’t ready yet” (?) but then someone from the back let us know a fresh batch had just been prepared! I’d recommend calling ahead if you’re looking for a specific donut or a wheat free/vegan donut.Sitting in the naturally lit area housing tables and chairs, I took a sip of my coffee and tore a piece off the fritter. It was surprisingly springy vs dense and I could see the cinnamon baked into the batter. A few bites in, I decided I loved the flavor and the glaze, but the texture was too weird. Gluten/wheat free donuts are difficult to perfect, and these are definitely worth a try... Unfortunately, I only made it a few more bites in before raising the white flag. I wonder if they used tapioca flour? Just felt too elastic for me.Nice atmosphere, good coffee (only offer half n half and almond milk FYI), and good taste. Just not worth the indulgence for me.
I can say this place does it for me. I will be back with my coworkers. This place has a cool design. Like a restaurant in Washington I loved.
Got there about three, it wasnt crowded. The service was very helpful and observant. Prices were decent.
Doughnuts are always on point and the best oat milk mocha around!
I thought it was okay but I have a really high bar for donuts and SF is lacking somewhere great. Not bad, but not special or noteworthy. If youre in the area stop in, but dont go out of your way to try it.
Best doughnut place in the city! I first saw them at Off the grid at fort mason park so I has to find their retail location. Their vegan sweet potato donut is to die for!
The donuts were delicious, and the woman who rang me up was great. They are overpriced though. I can be slightly more understanding for gluten free donuts costing $4, but for regular donuts, its a bit much. This also considering how heavily SF is being gentrified.
HUGE, fresh and very tasty donuts (of all kinds), along with coffee-etc.Near San Francisco City Hall.
Tasty donuts with a decent amount of seating inside. Everyone was very nice - line for the cashier was a bit long, but I went during the first few weeks when they were still ironing out kinks. Only downside is that the donuts are pricey - these arent your usual Bobs Donuts. But definitely worth a try / occasional treat!
My only regret is Apple Pay isn’t set up to tip here (at least I wasn’t given the option) because the woman at the counter was exceptionally delightful and she deserves a bonus for making my day sweeter. Also, the doughnuts are fabulous. I got the raspberry old fashioned. So dense. So fried. So good.
