A very quiet place. A nice selection of products but I wish they had more colorful cardstock or prismacolor packs.

Mendels has been a resource for all kinds of creative projects for the many years Ive lived in SF. The staff are always helpful in figuring out what I need. A fun store not just for artists. Find jewelry, fabrics and great costumes here. A resource for funky unusual burning man fabrics, like holographic vinyl, animal print fake fur, and a great remnant pile. a big selection of patterned oil cloth and sparkly vinyls will wet your appetite for redecorating.

This establishment has not changed, Im grateful for that. A must visit for local arts and craft supplies. Unique items and a great way to show support for SF Love.

The manager was so rude and demeaning - to me as a customer and to the employees! I cant imagine how theyre treated when customers arent in earshot. I feel bad for anyone working there.

Such an eclectic shop! A much bigger fabric selection than I expected. Staff was really helpful to get me set up with materials for an embroidery project. Yarn selection was just ok, but that’s not their primary feature. Now their pen and brush supply? Pretty extensive!

I love the atmosphere of this store! It has such an artsy feel and the staff are both knowledgeable and friendly. They also have very fair prices and are one of the only places that sells embroidery thread. They also have quite a nice selection of fabrics by the yard.

Well stocked, can be pricey. Wheelchair accessible entrance and wide aisles, but the fabric section is up 3-4 stairs and I dont think theres a lift

Great, Eclectic craft store

Best place to find great fur. Store is small but packed to the gills with creative finds. Staff is friendly and helpful. Parking is atrocious, but store is worth the hunt.

Once youve navigated the horror of Haight Street; urine, needles, random sidewalk sleepers, Mendels is an artists, and aspiring artists paradise.Every possible medium; oil, charcoal, acrylic, graphite, crayon...can be found here. There is paper, canvas, pencils, pens, brushes, and a thoughtful and attentive staff happy to assist.This wont be my last time at Mendels, although I wont wear good shoes...

The store is fine in a pinch, but they have the lowest quality versions of things. It’s perfect for crafty projects, but as a seamstress I don’t buy shears or other things I want in higher quality and higher priced.

This is an awesome store. They have a great variety of art supplies and the store itself is very creative with artwork to see all throughout. It is very fitting to have such a unique store in the Haight. The staff is very friendly, too. Plus, its family owned for 50 or 60 years now.

Great supplies, haight based local arts and craft store

This review is being changed because of a recent experience. The customer service is TERRIBLE. I went in for an idea for a friend and the entire staff acted as if they really couldnt care less. When asked where was the embroidery supplies, the staff person merely waved her hand and directed me down there somewhere in the center of the store. I will not go back unless its an absolute emergency.

Such a great little arts and craft store! Not a big yarn selection and theyre kind of expensive too, but everything else is terrific!

I found things at Mendels that you wont find any where else.I do think that they should show their art supplies in their website as well as their sewing and tile products. Their art supplies are small section but the things they carry are among the rarest Ive seen. Like a rough grey paper perfect for using white drawings.The web shows mostly their sewing items and not much about other art products such as a gold leaf I needed and they had it. But it could not be found on their website.Great store reasonable prices and I will be back.

Great Local Art Supply and Fabric Store, and I often get happily lost when I am there, sometimes spending an hour or more just Browsing the thousands of items. Just about anything you need to to be creative can be purchased tbere. The staff may not always be the most knowledgeable but very friendly and happy to help. The prices are a little higher on most items than some of the larger chain stores but worth the little bit of extra cost for the convienince of not having to travel far, the unique neighborhood flare, thousands quality products for just about every craft and hobby as well as fabric and sewing supplies . Rounding out a near perfect shopping experience for me the store is dog friendly as well. If you find yourself in the Haight Mendels is definitely worth a look no matter what your particular creative passion may be.

Okay place to look for general arts & craft supplies. I was looking for more professional art supplies, and I found the selection to be limited. Also, the items on the shelves were rather dusty. The staff members would answer questions, but werent very helpful or friendly.

1 Stop arts and crafts supply store, been there ever since I can remember. Not the friendliest staff but not the worst.

I wanted to dye some fabric and had no idea what I was doing, which must have been apparent, when the lady checking me out asked me what I was working on. Turns out I was about to buy dye for silk and feathers (which is not what I was hoping to dye). She then helped me find the dye I was looking for (which was cheaper then the dye I was going to get) and gave me a crash course in dying fabrics.

One of the few independent art supply stores left in this city. Maybe because all of the artists were priced out/evicted.

Great craft equipment

I have only ever bought fur (Punky Muppet) from this company. Im a costume/furry accessory maker, and i simply love the quality of the fur that they have, despite the high price tag. My only complaint is the ridiculous shipping costs! When I buy a half of a yard of fur (appx $15), Im expected to pay more than the product itself in shipping, even at the cheapest option. However, this is my only complaint! In my experience, theyve shipped my orders the next business day after ordering. Overall, great service, and highly recommended for other fursuit makers. The extra few bucks is worth it for the quality of their Punky Muppet shag!
