This was one of the best experiences Ive had in San Francisco! Dandelion Chocolate started off as a tiny shop roasting and producing their own chocolate in the Mission district, and now theyre a national success. If you have time to schedule a tour of the factory, I would definitely recommend that you do so! The tour was cheap, $15 per person, and they give you a voucher for a free beverage at their cute cafe! The tour takes you through the whole process of chocolate making, starting with how cocoa pod are processed at the places they source from, how cocoa fruit is fermented, how they inspect cocoa beans before purchase, processing the beans at the factory, roasting the beans, and actually making the chocolate. You get to taste the fruits of the cocoa pod, the roasted nibs, go through chocolate tasting and even taste liquid chocolate thats still in the melanging process. Such an amazing company, such an amazing product, and such an amazing place.
This was great -- very interesting. Christine answered all of our questions, and really knew her stuff. Im not a dark chocolate person, but I enjoyed this session a lot. This was a birthday present for our son, who IS a dark chocolate person, and he had a great time, as well. This is a really fun activity!
The indoor area was still closed due to COVID, but they were still open for take-out.Mission Hot Chocolate (4 out of 5): Hot chocolate with some kick! This hot chocolate has quite the spice, giving it an exotic flavor. It wasnt overly sweet, and was just right for my palate, though it might be under sweet for most people. The big marshmallow on top was such a treat, as it melted in the chocolate. I had to knock the rating down a notch because it was served (in my opinion) not hot enough, almost like a luke-warm chocolate, which on a cold day wasnt as satisfying as I was hoping for.Chefs tasting flight (4 out of 5): Not currently available, but Ive had this at a previous visit. The flight is very picturesque and Instagram-worthy, and wins all the cuteness points. Taste-wise, it was a mixed bag. The cacao spritzer tasted like sparkling water with a hint of cacao, it didnt have any of the sweetness I was hoping for. The panna cotta was good and the teeny tiny spoons were adorable. The smore and macaron were spot on.
This is not an everyday kind of place. In the same building, theres a cafe thats pretty much the same as Dandelion Chocolates Valencia location, with reasonably-priced beverages and desserts and such. This review is not about that. This review is about a place where youll drop a hundred bucks on afternoon tea for two people (before tip). So lets get that it of the way first: its expensive, and its basically a sweet afternoon snack. If youre OK with that going in, it can be a fun experience. There are some à la carte options, but the main draw is the prix fixe sets. When we went there were two options: one featured a variety of pastries using different parts of the chocolate pod ($45/person), and the other had three ice cream-based desserts each featuring chocolate from a different region ($40/person). We chose the former. Each set comes with your choice of various teas, coffees, and hot chocolates. We had the cacao nib coffee, which was outstanding—very balanced, with low acidity and almost no bitterness. Its also available in the cafe for $4/cup. All the pastries were excellent too.So, not someplace wed go every day, but we will be back at some point. Recommended for chocolate lovers.
Great new addition to the Mission. They have an awesome cafe full of delicious cocoa based drinks. The cafe is not too busy right now as they just opened in April 2019. If you want a more intimate experience you can sign up for a class or factory tour on their website. The factory tour teaches you how they go from bean to bar all in one building.
I was so excited to finally experience this class!I’d been waiting since Christmas and couldn’twait a moment longer . I had no idea what the nuances of chocolate tasting meant. I only knew that certain chocolates were more appealing to me. I feel so much better able to appreciate these differences now. I do believe it will enhance my enjoyment of chocolate in the future . Explaining the details of your sourcing was also enlightening to me. It’s comforting to know that supporting Dandelion and some of the other chocolatiers is helping the smaller farmers . Thanks to all involved .
My partner and I had a lovely time doing the chocolate tasting that my brother got us for Christmas. It was fun, different, interesting and informative. The chocolate was delicious and the facilitator was easy going, knowledgeable and made us instantly at ease. I would highly recommend this as an activity to try when you are getting the Covid lock down blues! In fact I WILL recommend it to my friends and family :)
It was a friends recommendation. We went and they were about to close down. We ordered Mission Hot Chocolate and European Drinking Chocolate.Add marshmallows and you have an amazing treat to yourself. The place has a very cutting edge decor and is quite rich in ambience as well as the menu.An interesting find!
Went for their high tea recently. Overall, I’d say it was a good experience. But not all the desserts lived up to the high standards I usually associate with dandelion chocolate. My favourite part was the profiterole filled with an earl grey mousse. The crackle on the profiterole added a nice crunchy texture and the filling was flavourful without being too sweet. The chocolate soufflé was rich but a too sweet. But I guess the cute copper pot it was served it made up for this a little. The macaron was very mediocre (at best). The egg “sandwich” was good but i was sad to see that it was the only savoury element of the tea. I know it’s meant to focus on dessert, but I really wish they had just one more savoury element to balance our all the sweet stuff - esp after the macaron.
The breakfast at Bloom Chocolate Salon is a fun and delicious experience that I think everyone should come and try. Dandelions chocolate is simply amazing and they did a great job creating a menu that showcases the best parts of their chocolate offerings.Though the menu is decidedly sweet forward in its options the savory menu items are not to be missed. The quiche is quietly possibly one of the best I have had - a great crust and beautifully soft texture inside. The brioche French toast and cake for breakfast were also very well done and paired beautifully with their chocolate. The vegetable hash is a fantastic options if you’re looking to keep things healthy. Love the strong deco style. It is what I wanted a chocolate breakfast to be.The menu is ala carte and the portions are on the smaller side so if you’re looking for a big full heavy breakfast maybe grab a couple ofItems on the menu. We came with 4 people and shared 5 items and we were all happy and satisfied.A must try in my opinion. This is definitely a meal or experience i’d want to share again with out of town friends or something like that. This is not an everyday brunch kind of place. Definitely one to keep in the back pocket for a special occasion or fun date idea
I love the class 103! It was very nice and interactive! You should make in Spanish 😉
We really enjoyed the breakfast. The Cake was super good, chocolately and fluffy. The Churros were crispy and the nutella dipping sauce was exceptional. The Creme Brulees French Toast Sticks were crispy and flavorful, and the whipped cream to dip in was the bomb. We dipped everything in it ;) The potatoes on the Hash were super well seasoned and the chocolatey pesto was a new and great experience. The coffees were also very good. So basically it was super good.
The truffle making online class is our second Dandelion class. We loved the tasting class so much that we took the second and WHAT A FUN EXPERIENCE!!! The teachers are so thorough and patient and the end results were so successful! Beautiful and delicious! And the kit was a good value... nearly $85 dollars worth of raw materials along and free shipping! We will absolutely take classes in the future and recommend Dandelion to our friends. Thanks so much for a fun evening!! Jane
We did the online chocolate tasting and it was fabulous! Well organized and very informative. Not to mention that the chocolate is just amazing!! We love Dandelion and look forward to trying more of their tasty treats. So great!
Truffle making class was so fun! It was my first time making truffles. The class was easy enough that I could follow along well and my truffles turned out great! I loved all their tips for tempering chocolate and creative ideas for toppings for the truffles. I’m looking forward to doing more classes!
Wonderfully done! We enjoyed chocolate and smiles as we were educated in the process of chocolate! Highly recommend for the dark chocolate lovers out there!
I have long been a fan of Dandelion’s spectacular chocolate (Including decadent and definitely healthy chocolatey drinks sold in the Ferry Building, SF) and single-origin fair-trade mission. I consider myself to be an early adopter of new products including the most decadent new chocolate chips in the LARGE bag! This is the kind of ethically made, high-quality chocolate I want to eat and share as gifts. Today’s chocolate tasting class made me love Dandelion even more. My daughters and I sampled five different bars while a fantastic host walked us through some fascinating chocolate-making facts and tasting notes. It was collaborative, educational, and fun to take this class via Zoom. Five stars all around for Dandelion!
The presentation was well organized and done efficiently. What I would have appreciated was if the chocolates were a bit more varied. The 2018 bean version of my favorite didnt have the same taste as the 2016 version.
Virtual tasting with real chocolate was fun! I learned a lot and enjoyed the chocolate.
I had such a fun experience taking the virtual tour at Dandelion Chocolate! Learning about the varieties of the cocoa pod is very new to me and the tour sparked an interest to try chocolates in their purest form. My son, who is in Kindergarten joined the tour with me and was very interested in learning about Chocolate! This is a great experience to share with your children.
This place holds a special place in my heart as I work there! ♥️ Our newly opened factory boasts a retail shop with beverage service and our European Chocolate Salon BLOOM where we have a full service menu. Wander the public viewing area of the factory. We are a Bean-To-Bar 2 ingredient Chocolate Factory sourcing our beans globally and making incredible single origin chocolate bars! Please Visit!
Very informative class on ingredient terminology and understanding of how to interpret whats on the label of your chocolate bars! Christine made the class fun! Highly recommended!
The class was a birthday present from my son. It was enjoyable and interesting. The chocolate is high quality and delicious. I would recommend.
I was given a box of chocolates that included a virtual tasting class as a gift. This is not something I would have ever purchased for myself, but the chocolate was amazing and the class informative. A wonderful idea if you want to support small, local merchants during this difficult time.
We really enjoyed the online class. Both teachers were friendly, easy to follow, and simply delightful. I loved that Dandelion sent us all the ingredients ahead of time. Highly recommend this class.
I loved this class!! Very informative and everything was explained very well.Teacher was very professional and knowledgeable.Great class!!
We did online 103 a chocolate tasting experience. It was both a lot of fun and very informative. Learned tings that apply to tasting in general - not just chocolate tasting.
Great class! Fun too! It’s be more fun with a couple of friends. Or a private party!
The Chocolate Tasting 103 zoom class was a great team building experience for our company. Everyone got their own bars and joined in the zoom call. It was the perfect blend of conversation and information, and of course amazing chocolate!! Its interesting how much more you taste when you focus on the process and how much fun it can be to share with each other the experience. Highly recommended.
This was a fun class. The hostess was personable and knowledgeable about her subject. She gets ten stars!
The chocolate is fabulous and the class was informative and interesting. We enjoyed it very much
I love Dandelion chocolate. My family and I had the unforgettable experience of joining Cynthia & Greg on one of the Belize trips. It was thoughtful, educational, and tons of fun! We made wonderful friends and tasted some AMAZING chocolate. If you have the chance to take one of their trips you should definitely do it. Recently, I did the virtual 103 tasting class. My son gifted it to me for Mothers Day and it was perfect. Just the right amount of tasting and learning. Jessica & Robert were terrific guides and made the experience extremely enjoyable. Highly recommend!
Literally the best chocolate in the world!I love their attention to detail. The paper, the foil... everything!
Kouign amann was caramelly and crisp with a delightful chocolate dollop. The best pastry they have and probably the best kouign amann I’ve had. The drinking chocolate was once their best chocolate drink but now it has a strange taste that reminds me of Hershey’s syrup. Maybe they are now adding something to it like corn syrup? The texture also seems less thick than before. Can’t complain too much: it does still also have the rich chocolate flavor. And of course, the Japanese pottery everything is served in remains beautiful (and buyable in-store).
We are about 7 of us visited on the sunday 23rd june 2019 . since we did not book a table we ordered randomly some pastries coffee and shakes . I was disappointed as there were not much of pastries available that too on a sunday . The place is quiet spacious but does not have much seats for walk in customers .
We just completed a virtual chocolate tasting experience that included a set of 6 single origin/harvest year bars to use in the tasting session. The experience was totally worthwhile, a fantastic diversion from current events. Highly recommended if you really enjoy chocolate.
Extraordinary chocolate! Said by someone who comes from Turin in Italy, the city of chocolate.
I booked Make Your Own Chocolate Bar for a work team building event of 7 people. Jessica was super patient and helpful with my reservation. Robert was a great host and very knowledgeable. Christine was an excellent instructor, provided clear step-by-step instructions and kept everyone engaged. Overall, the feedback I received from my team regarding this experience was all positive. Personally, I really enjoyed the experience and I appreciate the team at Dandelion for making it happen.
Small and beautiful chocolate factory. There is a coffee shop attached to the factory where you can enjoy variety of coffees and chocolate drinks with cookies. Ambience of the coffee shop is a class. There is also a display of variety of chocolates with sources and also one can get know the entire supply chain of chocolates. They also conduct information sessions to customers on variety of chocolates and you can taste different chocolates. Great place!!
We had a team virtual offsite and had a truffle-making course with Dandelion. Everything about it was amazing, from the ease of setting it up to the shipping of chocolate to all our team members to the event (on zoom) itself, where the entire team of 22 had an amazing experience learning about chocolate and how to make a ganache, hot chocolate, and truffles! Fantastic experience, and VERY yummy chocolate.
Dandelion’s chocolate truffle class was great! The step-by-step instructions were clear and we really enjoyed making the delicious truffles.
I bought an assortment and to my surprise, they all really do taste different. Very cool concept and a great little break from my workday trying out the different chocolates.
A really fun and informative class. The instructor Janelle was great - patient and knowledgeable
Great chocolate and the virtual tasting was fun and informative.
Christine led our small group through Dandelion’s chocolate making process and we had a wonderful time! It was cool to see the equipment first hand and to taste the beans at various stages. And of course, Dandelion’s end product is delicious. I’ll come again with other friends.
I hadnt attended a chocolate tasting before today, although I have loved chocolate all my life and have made my own bittersweet chocolate truffles with Belgian chocolate. Exploring the flavor characteristics of these single source chocolates was a lot of fun, although I think I will need to practice with many more bars to become an expert taster!
We did the online chocolate tasting and loved the opportunity to do something fun like we would do on vacation from the comfort of home. Our instructor was absolutely delightful, and we learned tasting notes that can also be applied to wines and cheeses.
Amazing Chocolate. You can definitely taste that its high quality. For someone who cant have any sort of dairy (no milk chocolate), I dont even miss it when I eat these chocolate bars!
What a fun time! The chocolate was delicious, smooth and lush. And the presenters were very knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about what it takes to source and produce top-quality dark chocolate.
The Zoom tasting was fun and very informative. And every single chocolate bar was amazing. You could taste the quality and care that goes in to every step.
The factory tour is fantastic! It went well beyond a demonstration of how their chocolate is made, and seems to be regularly updated with the latest innovations in their chocolate making process. I was fascinated to learn how they are experimenting with various technologies to increase the scale of their output without compromising taste. And one of the biggest surprises was getting to try raw chocolate fruit from a freshly cracked open cacao pod, which did not taste at all how I expected it to.
Started with a quick walk through the factory with a small group. It was interactive and you taste a fair amount of chocolate while learning something of the process. Walk away with a chocolate bar for good measure. Id recommend this and do it again.
The virtual chocolate tasting was such a great experience! My husband and I truly enjoyed it. We learned more about different chocolate flavor-profiles and how to properly experience chocolate.Highly recommend!
Amazing quality, sustainable and compassionate practices (that work directly and fairly w farmers), and incredibly professional, friendly service... What more could you ask for?You can tell the owner is truly passionate about what she does, and its a joy to listen to her talk about the ins and outs of chocolate! Love people who love what they do ☺️ esp. when they care about the potential of their business to work towards environmental stewardship
My second time there, this time for the chocolate tea service which was superb, both the food and the service! One of my favorite places in a city full of great food! The factory tour is also great! Im looking forward to taking the chocolate making class at some point. Can you guess that I love chocolate?
Amazing chocolate and an interesting, educational and fun virtual class.
Awesome class!, clear, easily understood, excellently presented.
We loved the chocolate tasting and have even more appreciation for the process of making chocolate! Very informative! We learned so much and definitely recommend to anyone who loves chocolate!
The spicy Mission hot chocolate was amazing, as well as the European Drinking version (I got a taste of my companions). And these heavenly drinks are served with real marshmallows! The pastry crust of the vegetable quiche was crisp and delightfully melted in my mouth. The chocolate-chip pancake Cake for Breakfast was a treat...I slathered on the vanilla cream and chocolate maple syrup!...and came down to earth with a soothing cup of hot coffee from the cafe bar. After dining we viewed the factory, churning vats of aromatic chocolate blends. I honestly cant remember a breakfast quite so much fun. Staff was young and charming. Only negative was the challenge of finding parking in the neighborhood. We gave in to using the basement lot of the nearby shopping center.
I now know things that might have taken me a long time to find out on my own. I thought I needed to process for 24-36 hours. I am glad 12-18 hours should be enough. I also thought I could temper in a stainless steel steam pan. Finding out it would make tempering harder sure is a help. The teachers were friendly and informative. Thank you, Hope
I had the pleasure of visiting this location of Dandelion Chocolate twice since they opened. My friend David, who works in Bloom, recommended taking a look and a taste. And I am very glad he did! Being from Europe, the idea of a European style tasting room really appealed to me and I was ready to be blown away. I had the ice cream experience which was very good and definitely surprised my taste buds. I made sure to recommend Bloom - the name of the tasting room - to the Dutch community in the Bay Area, as the Dutch love some good chocolate. My second visit - inspired by the first one - was a tour with my 15 students who were in the Bay Area on a study trip. Although I enjoyed the tour, and so did my students, it was a bit disappointing that the factory was actually closed when we took the tour. This wasnt mentioned during the reservation, and we definitely would have tried to reschedule to another moment if we had known before. Nevertheless, our tour guide Obed did a great job explaining everything and almost made us forget about the non working machines. Maybe if we had sampled some more chocolate, the chocolate high would have solved that issue :)
Loved the class on Zoom! Did this with family in different states for Dad’s 80th Birthday. All generations enjoyed and learned great info about chocolate. Thank you!
My friend and I enjoyed every minute of our experience at Dandelion Chocolate. We started with brunch in the beautiful, deco restaurant/cafe space onsite and then we continued to the Chocolate tasting. I have a new educated appreciation of chocolate now!
Christine gave the most comprehensive and thoughtful tour I have ever had at Dandelion - and Ive had many. This is a very user-friendly exhibit -so many details have been carefully considered, the most helpful is that each guest is now issued a bluetooth monitor, so that none of the explanation is lost amidst the clatter. Thanks for a great visit.
I took the 200: Bean to Bar class and it was amazing! I have loved Dandelion Chocolate for a log time, but getting to see the work that goes into making the bars was awesome. Not only did I get to learn about how chocolate is made and grown, I got to taste chocolate at every step of the process from weird tropical fruit to fully tempered chocolate bar. The price is totally worth it, because you leave the three hour class with a bunch of chocolate in different stages. Our teachers were super friendly, too. A fun time was had by all.
We really enjoyed our chocolate tasting. It was organized and interesting and well run. THanks! Oh, and of course it was delicious!
It was a fun and educational experience to share with my 14 year old son. Wish we could visit in person. The chocolate arrived in pristine condition ahead of the event.
I went with my husband and some friends for breakfast and after we to do the chocolate tour. Food was delicious and the tour was super interactive and educative. Great variety of chocolates flavors. Rebecca was awesome!. Thank you for the great experience. 😊
Breakfast at Bloom is wonderful. There are two savory dishes out of six offerings. All incorporated cocoa or chocolate in some form, even the non sweet dishes. The room itself ..and the table amenities are worth the visit, not to mention the catwalk peek into the chocolate factory. Id go once a week if I lived nearby. Parking is difficult during work hours of neighboring businesses...
Enthusiastic competent teacher. Beautiful table setting and surroundings. Very informative. Had a terrific time learning by tasting and talking. Will do more classes. Very high quality. Very highly recommended.
