Been a while since weve been here, but we always enjoy coming back! The prices are definitely on the higher side (a single mochi or pastry will set you back about $4-6... some items are much more!), but the presentation, quality, and service are all top-notch and luxurious. Our favorites are the vanilla white bean cake, sakura daifuku, and the pear and white peach flavored treats.

The sweet potato ice cream was a delightful treat! It wasnt too sweet and was just enough to hit the spot without feeling like youve went overboard on your cheat meal. There are tables inside and outside to sit. Great place to bring kids as well, as there is a childrens play area right outside the cafe.

The desserts are absolutely beautiful. They make for stunning pictures, and they look so perfect that it almost looks fake. The shaved ice with purple yam was the best thing we had. They give you extra purple yam sauce too. The purple yam ice cream is a little sour for some reason. The match tiramisu is a bit too salty. I wish the desserts tasted as good as they look.

Totally Instagram worthy items on their menu, but I have to say the cake wasnt good. I had the sweet potato tiramisu. It was purple and adorable, but I didnt really like the taste. The vanilla latte wasnt strong, but I ordered another coffee that came with soft serve that was nice. Parking is in the San Francisco Market parking structure. They didnt accept tickets that day, so we didnt need validation or anything.

Beware foreign credit card scam by Minamoto Kitchoan! Shop will automatically convert to £ or US$ or your card currency, at very bad rate (+4.2% commission). Pay in cash is the safest option. When I tried to ask them to charge me in local ringgit by credit card, but sales girl didnt have a clue. Most likely management had automatically programmed the card machines to do the auto-convert, to make more money for themselves.

The Japanese confections - wagashi - at Minamoto Kitchoan are as gorgeous to look at as they are delicious: a whole white peach in gelatin, red bean or white chestnut cakes, seasonal delights, Castella cake, crackers..it is all here. The wares are displayed like fine jewels and are worthy of such spectacle. When you order an item, they first tell you the expiration date & ask if that is acceptable. Such confectionery finery comes at a cost: one peach (called Tosenka) is $20.You can order some of their treats on-line...but if you can visit the shop, it really is worth at least seeing.

We just happened to walk by and noticed the window display, very much in the Japanese sushi restaurants...but hold on, it wasnt sushi. We had to investigate. This simply shop displayed the various Japanese sweets known as Wagashi. Food in Japanese culture is both pleasing to the eyes but also tastes really good. We grabbed a basket and started reading the little signs describing the flavor and type of sweet. Some were like Chinese moon cakes with red bean fillings, while others were mochi with different seasonal fillings, while others were jellies fill with fruit. There was also an interesting item we picked up, it was a block of jelly which you push through a tube into individual strings and you dip into a sweet sauce. My girls loved everything we brought it. I should add, we really loved the sweets with whole chestnuts in the middle. It was a slightly pricey treat, but all so good. The sales women inside the store were all very sweet and of course polite. The one that helped us was even teaching my daughters some of the words they didnt recognize in Kenji.

Pros:- cherry blossom mochi (super soft mochi and sweet filling)- nice, clean shop- helpful and knowledgable staff- good for gifts! (pretty packaging and quality ingredients)Cons:- on the pricier side ( $3 for 1 ball of mochi)Bottom line: I really enjoyed the mochi! I havent had that many... but this might have been the best Ive ever tried. If you prefer mochi to be soft and only slightly chewy, you will probably like this place.

You walk in, and before you sits a glass display of Japanese sweets. Theyre arranged like fine jewelry, in adorable packaging and tidy rows. Pick up a basket, select what looks appealing, and regret none of it.I bought the aya-shirabe, a vanilla senbei, cocoa dorayaki, loquat jelly, apple and bean wagashi, and a peach jelly. I felt the peach jelly, at $12, was a bit pricey, but refreshing. The rest were $3-$6 each and ranged from the truly lovely loquat jelly and aya-shirabe to variations where I didnt necessarily like the center filling, like the dorayaki. Dont let my comment sway you - the dorayaki pancakes were some of the best Ive had on the west coast. I regret only spending $30, because the rest of the store looked amazing, but I would go back in a second the next time Im in town.
