I was in town to see family and friends and asked some foodie local friends where the best butcher in town was, and off I went.I know my way around a walk-in and I was metWith enthusiasm and insight. My butcher knew a ton about each of the purveyors of his meat and was able to articulate the differences. He totally nailed it. I bought two steaks and everyone tried a bit of each and both were amazing. The pork rillette was also amazing and the 10lb pork butt was about one of the best I ever had.If you live in SF this should be your butcher. If you’re visiting, this should be your butcher.
I came across this butcher shop after doing a quick internet search for “guanciale sf”. I now realize why I’ve always failed to replicate the flavor of some of my favorite pasta dishes from Rome. There is absolutely no substitute for this cured Roman pork cheek delight. Between guanciale’s herbs and spices and it’s flavorful melted fat there is no wonder it is the prized powerhouse ingredient is the star in many of Central Italy’s best culinary dishes. The quality of the meat blew us away! Also an issue arose while paying and the employees were super accommodating and helpful. All the way around, this place is the real deal. We’ll be back for steaks….
Small but tasty, they offer an array of different salumi including lamb bacon!! Their sandwiches which are also tasty. So many different salumis you have to just ask to try them. The folks behind the counter are attentive, kind, friendly and most important helpful.Seems almost like they live to share their meaty knowlege with you, just ask n see! They also have ready to go packs of their most popular meats as well as a few things I didnt expect like fresh baked pretzels (the bomb) comes with a spicy mustard (warning really spicy) also dried mushrooms and other accoutrements.I cant wait to try my lamb bacon, Ill let you know in an update yummy or not, I will definetly be back, these guys do it right.
Hands down my favorite butcher shop in SF. Their charcuterie and pates are top notch, as are their meats. Staff is patient and talented (it takes talent to slice meats properly with the deli slicer and talent to properly butcher). They can get almost anything if you order in advance. This place is not to be missed.
Another overpriced butcher selling mediocre meat. They at least have some dry aged meats.
One of the few places I trust with my charcuterie meats... and I ate a lot of meats in France!
Very cool butcher shop in Hayes valley. not just meat, they also have a selection of gourmet items like pastas and oils. They also have drinks.
Went in to pick up three sandwiches. The sandwiches were good, just a tad cold. But what left a bad taste in my mouth was the even colder service. Don’t think I’ll be coming back.
I’ve been there twice, first time i had one sandwich there followed by a stomachache. The staff was very friendly, she gets 5 starsThe second time i went the staff was one of the unfriendliest in Hayes Valley
A fantastic selection of top quality meat products. Surprisingly little beef, given the name.
Friendly staff, great selection, and nicely set up store!
My go-to spot for organic, pasture-raised, local, ethically-sourced meat. I haven’t been able to shop at any other butcher since I’ve discovered the Fatted Calf. Plus, everyone that has helped me here has been super knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. Shoot, if they sold produce I might not shop anywhere else!Keep up the good work, everybody!
Best butcher in SF for sure. They may not have wagyu but they have just about everything you could want. Need guanciale (pork jowl) for your carbonara? They have it. Need your steaks cut to a certain thickness? They hand-cut them. Oh and dont forget the frozen section w/ lard, tallow, duck fat, etc. All the meat is high quality and the other products they sell are fantastic. Plus Ive always had top-notch service.
Tasty sandwich! Pleasant staff and nicely organized shop.
Great selection, high quality & fantastic, hight quality & qualified staff!!
One of the best boucherie-charcuteries in the city. Special mention for their sausages (Toulouse, Calabrese!), meatloaf, pâtés & rillettes, and also sandwiches (beef!).
After having Fatted Calf beef jerky I will never eat another beef jerky
Incredible service and product every single time! This crew is amazing!
Amazing butcher, can highly recommend them.
We really like this butcher shop. We pickup our CSA box here every week and spend at least $60 on their meats. Great high quality stuff, with the prices to match, no complaints there. The staff is all super friendly except for the older lady that cashiers. Today she crossed the line from her usual coldness to straight up rude and passive agressive when we asked a question. Not how you treat anyone let alone regulars.
The market had a wonderful selection of meat and even some samples. Prices were very reasonable and we left with a cooler full of wonderful Fatted Calf meats!
There was a long wait, about 1/2 an hour with 6 people in front of me. I placed an order for pickup about a week in advance and I had to wait even longer because only the manager knew where and what was in my order and the manager wasnt in when I arrived at 1130am on a Saturday. It is a great place for humanely raised meats, and they do their own dry aging for beef. Expensive but no more so than other humane butcher shops. Staff seemed knowledgeable and patient.
Holy heaven on earth. A meat lovers dream. Living so close to here for almost 2 years probably was not good for my health nor wallet. Every piece of meat I brought home has become my favorite meal. Seriously tasty, high quality cuts that you will not regret.
Ive been coming to this place for about 10 years. Their products still maintain good quality, but recent service has been a hit or miss. This morning I was there to order some ham. Because of a long waiting line, when it was my turn, I told one staff that Ill have to come back in 10 mins (checking on meter) while he was slicing my ham. 10 mins later, came back, the same staff greeted me saying the ham is ready. I got the impression that its ready to be paid so I asked him to add one quick item ( a package, no slicing needed). He then suddenly switched to a hostile tone saying I need to wait in line because he is helping another costumer, right in front of everyone in the store. Why didnt he just told me to wait a bit when I stepped back into the store to avoid this misunderstanding??? And a condescending tone of voice is no way to treat people who bring you business. Please have a better customer service training for your staff, Fatted Calf. I need to add that the other staff ( the redhead man) was very nice and courteous as always, so as most other staffs on other occasions. Also, on reading another reviewers note, I echo: earlier before I made my order, the same rude staff was going behind the counter cleaning things back and forth while there were 3 costumers waiting, strange.
A great place for meats and provisions.
Great little butcher shop and quality food items store. Not overpriced, but you pay for the quality and full knowledge of everything that comes through there. The awesome crew behind the counter will always steer you in the right direction of what youre looking for!
Certainly not the best butcher in town very expensive not necessarily fresh most of the employees there are snots
Pricey, but best butcher Ive found in the city. Their dry aged rib eye is incredible! Great sausage, cured meats, cheese as well. Cant go wrong!
Amazing butchery, everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable. We have gotten lamb bacon, picanas, and all have been amazing. Really love this spot and their butchers.
Amazing dry aged rib eyes and duck rillettes. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
This is a nice option for lunch in Hayes Valley if you like meat. I had the prosciutto sandwich (about $10) was good and hearty. I also had some kind of lamb meatball soup (about $6) which was tasty. The happy hour on Wednesdays is nice, as they lay out a charcuterie and serve wine. You can watch them hack a hog in half (or lamb) and theyre willing to answer any questions you might have about the meat. They dont offer the San Danielle prosciutto, which I like the best, but the one they sell is pretty decent. Unfortunately there is no seating except for a couple of benches outside.
The food is out of this world. Sandwiches are hearty and made with premium ingredients, from the bread to the meat to the condiments. Their soup is even more delicious, made with high quality meat cuts and fresh, organic veggies.A MUST-TRY for anyone wandering Hayes Valley or visiting the city.I have never ordered from the butcher here, but Ive eaten a number of sandwiches, soups, and misc other delicious items they sell.
Nice meats nice charcuterie. Artisan butcher in civic center.
Best spring water ever and great customer service
I walked by with a friend, we saw the sign, and being fans of meals that previously walked, decide to give it a try. I was not disappointed. I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was extremely tender and full of flavor. I would highly recommend.
If its high-end meat youre after, this is your place. Fatted Calf has some amazing cuts of meat, and their cured selection is mouthwatering. They also have a pretty fantastic pulled pork sandwich made with their house slaw and Blue Bottle-infused BBQ sauce (thats awesome, guys, keep it in the neighborhood). If its not already sold out, you will purchase said pulled pork sandwich and consume it immediately. No, really, walk to Patricias Green and eat it right away, because it will start getting soggy immediately. Final note: as a fan of all things pickled, I do appreciate their selection of pickled sides, though they err on the strong-vinegar-taste side. If thats your thing, go nuts.
Arguably the best butcher shop in San Francisco
Do you need meat? Do you need amazing meat? This is the place to go. These guys have an amazing selection, but note that some of it isnt available every day. Not cheap, but nothing quality is in this city.
Love love love this place!!!The stuffed chickens are amazing, and they also carry a great line of other Cajun foods!!!
Theres no weekend breakfast without Fatted Calf pre-packed bacon. So delicious! the rest of the products are high quality and every time I walk in there I want to buy everything. I good purchase also includes Magnolia beer, the presentation is just a classic
It is a awesome place for food, location and everything for releting to food I have visited on this place it was a great full experience for me the food was really awesome and the location are almost good and services are normal but food was really amazing 😎
The best meat in town.
We stopped in to pick up some things for a picnic and were quite happy that we stumbled on this place. The prices seemed reasonable and the interior was well decorated and organized. It was slightly difficult to pick what we wanted without samples, though.
How do you like your meat? Fresh? Marinated? Cured and sliced to order? They have you covered! A huge variety and extremely friendly, helpful service. They gave me samples to help me figure out what to get for a charcuterie plate. Prices were not cheap, but surprisingly reasonable. They also have a decent cheese selection, fresh bread, crackers, pasta, basically anything you would need to go along with your meat.A couple tips: their sandwiches (eg meatballs and meatloaf) are made with their extra/unsold meat. So basically, the fanciest meatballs you can find. Also, they are apparently the only butcher that gets Skywalker Ranch Wagyu.
A treat for those on the hunt for tasty animal parts. A little pretentious but great sandwiches. Not really anywhere to sit and they wont let you drink the beer they sell (by the can) inside the store.
A sinful place where its way too easy to spend all your money on animal parts. My friend and I picked up a sourdough baguette and two types of pate/terrine. The guy at the counter sold us by describing one of them as porky butter--I mean how could you say no to that? The prices are steep, but this is the kind of shop Id love to splurge in, both on the meats/cheeses and the dried artisinal products lining the stores shelves.
Excellent meats, charcuterie, cheeses and bread. Hard to leave here without something.
This is an expensive butcher shop. For example, hamburger meat is $10/lb. That said, if you make meat a treat for yourself (i.e. you dont eat meat all the time but when you do, you want it to be a excellent), this is the place. For example, my roommates did a taste test between a steak from this place and the same cut from a butcher shop on Divisadero (might not be around anymore). The steak from Fatted Calf was vastly better, however, the steak from the cheaper place was okay (not bad). Therefore, if you eat meat regularly and you dont consider yourself to have a refined palette (or if youre on a budget), I dont recommend this place.I gave it excellent ratings because despite the price, everything they have is excellent. Besides meat, they carry some bread, pasta, crackers, dairy, and preserves; all from local producers. Also, their meatloaf sandwich is incredible. Seriously, if they have one where youre there, buy it; you wont regret it.
FINEST quality, RELIABLE and tasty. Also quick service.
Omg. The best meat. Make sure to grab some bacon while you are there too.
Butcher shop with great egg and dairy selection. Locally sourced, incredible variety, and you cant get much fresher.
Really great sandwiches soups and salads to grab for lunch and bring to the square nearby!
Great selection of charcuterie!
This is my favorite butcher in the city!
High quality butcher shop -- great to try a variety of fresh meats and cheeses. Also a good spot for sandwiches and salads, that can be eaten nearby in the park!
Everything here is good, really and truly. Their homeade stocks are the best, and their duck liver mousse is one of the better things Ive ever eaten!
Didnt try the sandwiches, but their selection of specialty meats, cheeses, seasonings, and dried mushrooms was impressive and the clerk was friendly and full of cooking tips! The lamb bacon is amazing!
Very good sandwiches, no seating, but great to take out. Amazing aroma within the shop with the smoked meats.
Absurdly amazing.
The meat here is fantastic! The service was excellent. What more could you want?
Website and sign at door indicate closing of store at 7:30pm. However, it closed at 7pm on a weekday when I was there. Not cool at all.
Best bacon selection ever! They have fresh and pre-packed bacon which I bought and took to burning man and was the best food in the world to have.
The pulled pork sandwich with BBQ sauce made with Blue Bottle coffe beans i out of this world!
Great butcher and good value. They do one night where you can request special cuts.
Let me start by saying that this place is more expensive than most butcher shops. Now that that is out of the way I can say that their quality is excellent and their staff is incredibly helpful. As an example, I bought a one pound sealed bag of pork stew meat to barbecue on skewers. I asked one of their staff how to marinade it and he mentioned that a harissa marinade would work great. He then offered to open up the bag, mix in harissa marinade and reseal the bag for me. The resulting product was delicious and that type of service is characteristic of what I experience at the Fatted Calf. The reason I usually go to there, though, is for their amazing sandwiches and salads, which are very reasonably priced. I recommend the roast pork sandwiches but the porchetta is also excellent. Try to get it on focaccia bread if you can. You really cant miss here!
Excellent meats and helpful service. Ask questions!
I have died and seen Meat Heaven and this place is IT!!!! I had visited their Napa store on a trip up there and wanted to get some of the goodies without so long a drive. The SF store seemed to have WAY more in the way of offerings and ooohhhhh what they offered! I picked up some heritage pork chops and pork should roast done porchetta style. Soooo many other meaty treats to tempt and tease!!! All they have there is deliciousness! Parking is not great in that part of the city so you may have to circle the block once or so. Or you might just luck out and score a spot in front of the store. Its worth the effort either way. I say GO and GO NOW!!! #ReviewLocal
Great pulled pork sandwich! Messy, but delicious
Expensive cuts, but they dont disappoint. The sausages and sandwiches are also good, especially the porchetta.
Lamb bacon!
Really awesome options.
Amazing salami!!
Great place and friendly staff
Ever since Cris closed his shop in the ferry building, this is my go to jam.
Great Ribeye sandwich!!! Definitely coming back again!!!
Awesome shop
Local butcher and sandwich / specialty shop. Pick up a pricey organic chicken or meats for a special event.
Decent meatloaf sandwich
Lunchtime sandwiches for the win
Excellent meats!
Wish they were in Seattle
A famous store in San Francisco that is famous for meat. Before going to see SHN in Hamilton, I went out to eat. There were a lot of people who bought meat, ham and sausages and went home because there was an eat-in corner. It was a very simple sandwich, sandwiched between ham and cheese, and it was really delicious.
Super butcher / delicatessen / caterer (we can find pie)! Also very good products, such as olive oil. They make very good sandwiches and croque monsieur (for about $ 12), the portions are very generous. The dumplings are delicious and leave quickly ...
