Ive been a fan since the year they opened (1962 I believe).. when I came to s.f. I would head straight there. But I went there once this year and will never go back. This cant be the same store! Customer service bad, sandwich bad.. basic product (bagel, lox) bad. I would give 0 stars if I could. A year or 2 ago I we t in and it was great as ever. Thr impression I got was that everyone working in the shop was from New York. Maybe they were all Jewish. All I know is that everybody in the shop was knowledgeable about the product and loved it.But the last time I was served by a Latino who clearly knew nothing about the product. Even if the products had been good, he DIDNT HAVE A CLUE how to put them together into a sandwich. I struggled a bit and gave up and walked out.

Soft and chewy, this is as close to a real New York bagel you are going to get in San Francisco. Its been around since 1962 for a reason. We got lucky and got in a few minutes before a huge rush with a line quickly out the door. Service was quick and helpful. Not much seating but youre not here for the ambiance. Grab a mixed dozen for $16 and enjoy.

Sorry, i cannot find anything good to say. The everything bagel had large pieces of salt encrusted in the top and a few seeds. I asked for well toasted and it was hardly toasted. The coffee was luke warm. When i tasted the bagel it tasted of fish, like from the previous customer who had ordered salmon. I point this out and just got a shrug from Bubba behind the counter. FORGET ABOUT IT. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. BETTER OPTIONS AROUND THAT AREA.SAD. VERY, VERY SAD.DONT BOTHER.

Sadly, our 50 years as customers has come to an end. The bad news is the customer service was TERRIBLE and we were disappointed with the size and quality of our favorite (pumpernickel) bagel. The good news is we’ll save the gas and hassle of the 100 mile trips. We ordered 2 dozen bagels on-line and paid almost $50 (INCLUDING $6 GRATUITY) for an 11 a.m.July 24 pick-up as part of our 39th anniversary trip to SF from Modesto. When we came to pick them up the young man behind the counter said, “We don’t have 2 doz!”I said, “But we pre-ordered and PAID for them!” He repeated what he said 2-3 times. A gal came to assist him. All she said was, “Sorry, we must’ve missed it (system generated printout)”. I was livid but calm so as not to make a scene in front of the other customers. Are you kidding me? Then they scrambled to fill my order with WHAT WAS LEFT in the bins: 20 (some flat as a pancake from piling them while they were still warm) and I had to resort to choosing 6 of another flavor. I asked him, “How can we avoid this from happening in the future since your store doesn’t accept phone calls?!” All he said was, “ I’m sorry.” I was so mad that I took my bag and walked out. In retrospect I wish I had asked for a manager. It was a very bad start to my special anniversary trip. I don’t know if there was a change in ownership and/or management but it was pathetic customer service which we PREPAID THE $6 GRATUITY FOR!! Sad state of affairs H of B!!

The bagels here have never been anything special, and consistently vary between fair and good. Have bought them both at other stores that sell them as well as here. And sadly to me they just never taste really fresh or good. True San Francisco was never New York, but for a place in business nearly 50 years when you spend $1.65 on a bagel it ought to at least be consistently good. Anyhow, if you toast them then they are decent enough. Otherwise might as well just buy bagels at Safeway. Pictured here is an Everything Bagel.

This place is way overpriced and they don’t post the prices in the store so they’ve already started your order as they ring you up and you can’t really say no. One lady that works there was so rude as I waited for my food she said “is something wrong, did you have a question?” And I said no and she said “ok then wait outside”. I was the only person in there and it was 40 degrees outside... there was a nicer way she could’ve handled it if that’s store policy.

Only real bagels this side of town (boiled not steamed), for those that dont know what that means, many places steam their bagels before baking them instead of boiling. This produces a more airy fluffy texture for the inside of the bagel, where a boiled bagel has a more chewy consistency. This store serves up about 20 different varieties of bagels (all along with their spread are made in house) from Jalapeno to Pumpkin with many other interesting varieties thrown in for good measure. Its a standing room, order at the counter, take your goodies to go type of place, but they can always make sandwiches while you wait. They also have great breads and other pastry items as well.

I have been craving bagels so I trekked out to the other side of town one Saturday morning in search of the supposed best New York-style bagels in town. I have never been to New York so I cant compare, but these were very good. I got my favorite of onion with plain spread. They had so many varieties of bagels and spreads that I actually want to try them all.It is a small place, set up like a deli. The people working behind the counter were very friendly and made sure everyone was helped right away. The biggest wait was for my food after I ordered it, but they did go through the crowd of people fairly quickly. This place is popular for a reason. I imagine when I went it wasnt as busy because it was early and really raining. Im sure on a nice day, there would be a line out the door. I just wish this place was closer to where I live!

This place has good, real bagels. They sell pumpernickel as well, which I very much appreciate, as those are not so easy to find out here, but they really need to make them a bit more sour. Try their corn bagels - essentially, plain bagels rolled in cornmeal, adds a nice bit of grit. Also, I recommend their hamentashen - they have several varieties, all excellent.

This place has really fallen off. I just ordered a lox bagel and the bagel was stale. They “toasted” it so hard that the bagel was hard, crunchy, and cut the roof of my mouth. Also, they slather cream cheese all over the bagels even if you ask them not to do so. A waste of $12. I used to live in New England but spent a lot of time in NYC, home of the countrys best bagels, which is an actual fact not just my personal opinion. I moved to the Richmond District in SF about 4 1/2 years ago and stumbled across House of Bagels on one of my neighborhood explorations so obviously the bagel addict in me needed to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised and quickly became a frequent patron. There is a cornucopia of flavors to choose from, plus a handful of different cream cheeses (aka shmears) that are incredibly robust in flavor. They also make really great breakfast sandwiches as well. If youre looking to get a latte or some other specialty coffee drink, youll have to venture elsewhere as they only serve brewed coffee and tea. If you head there on a weekend or swing by during the morning commute, youre going to want to plan ahead and give yourself some extra time to get to your destination. Ive been there for upwards of 30min, during busy times, between waiting in line, ordering, and then waiting for it to be prepared, but normally Im in and out in 10 minutes or less. If you
