They have nice stuff but I was very uncomfortable being in a store where the employees do not all wear masks nor do they enforce masks. I would have liked to support a smaller hardware store rather than big box but thats unacceptable. Do better.

Oh man. I really want to love this place and support a local business, but I went there in January, when COVID numbers in Texas were on the rise and witnessed two employees without masks on. Shortly after, I came back positive for COVID. After waiting the appropriate quarantine time, I came back to get the other parts for my project only to find that now there were THREE employees without masks. As someone else posted on here, this place does not respect COVID restrictions and hasnt done so for a while. If you are interested in contracting a deadly virus - this might be the place for you!

This place is great. Lisa and Randall are so helpful. Randall spent a good 20 minutes helping me find what i needed. We couldnt find the pieces i need but he looked till we found something that would work. This is by far the best hardware store to go to

San Antonio is SO fortunate to have a place like Johnnie Chuokes! Their line of merchandise is amazing and their staff is both skilled and So incredibly helpful! I relied on Pauls expertise in 3 different departments. He was knowledgeable in each one. So much better than a big box store where the help might be one job removed from dropping out of high school. Truly an old style hardware store where there are many departments with pros in each one. I didnt even get to the gift department! Everyone needs to go to Johnnie Chuokes at least once a week!

Always was a pretty good little hardware store, but went in today and none of the staff wore masks, unlike what is stated on this page. Thats why it gets one star.

Been renting the carpet cleaner the past 4 winters. Dont know if shes the owner or a manager, but she gave me really hard time and wanted to charge me a $10.00 cleaning fee..... I cleaned the thing the past 3 times without any issue. Took it back outside, went to ORileys and brought it back inside. I literally did nothing to it and magically its fine now. Ill be taking my business else where for simply wasting my time and insulting me by implying that I dont know how to properly clean, when Ive had no issues in the past.

Had what I needed. Understands paints and the differences. They tell you if that dont have an item your looking for and dont try to sell you something that will not work for a project or contract one is involved in. Thank you, for being real.

Best hardware store in town for hard to find things. Staff is very helpful and accommodating. Always friendly and very informative. Have recommended many times, my friend told me about this place when I couldnt find an A/C filter anywhere in town.

Very nice place, very clean and organized. The older lady who runs the place is very nice and very knowledgeable. They dont have EVERYTHING but they can order it.

Trudy, Julie and the rest of the gift shop staff are so kind, they make you feel like family. Everything is beautifully decorated and the items they sell are unique and boutique style gifts. If youre in the area, its a must, just seeing what they have and meeting the ladies will make it worth your time.

The gift boutique area at the front has so many beautiful things, I could spend hours looking around. Watercolor paintings, handbags, ceramics, stationary, uniquely scented room sprays, ect. ect. There are no crowds to fight and youll find something for everyone here.

I can get can get liquid fire for my clogged up sink the price is way cheaper there than what you can get online. They have very reasonable prices.

Went to purchase a chain for a little project I was working on. An employee then helped me by finding a cut chain which was close to the length that I needed, so the worker never cut the chain. As I go to make my purchase the cashier informs me that their machines are down and can only make cash transactions but added that they could take my card information and withdrawal from my account later, which is what I ended up doing. Week goes by and I dont need the chain anymore so I went by to return it. The same cashier, Jill, now tells me that cut chains are non returnable. I informed her that the chain was never cut but still refused to do the return. I was never informed that cut chained was non returnable and didnt even attempted to make an exception after giving them my business when their machines were down and I couldve gone somewhere else. I wont be making that mistake again and will refuse to shop at a business that picks and chooses which policies to inform the consumer.

Sign on door and website says store opens at 8 am. Sat out front until almost 8:20 and doors still locked. Your store is very convenient because I live right behind the shopping center. I will take my business elsewhere from now on since the store cannot open at the correct time.

This is one of those few remaining hardware stores of the past that provides a good variety of products with a healthy dose of expert knowledge. Its a sarce commodity in those big box stores assuming you can find someone. Its a bit more pricey but well worth the extra cost.

We bought several ceiling fans from here a couple years ago for our new home, had issue with 1 and between them and rep the problem was resolved. Fast forward to this past May 2019, we went in and decided to purchase 2 more fans, long story short, we called them and placed order over phone and paid for them. Told us they had to order, no problem. A week later we get called and were asked did we want to place order, this was by the owner, we said yes. Was told they had one in stock other would be about 10 days coming in, no problem. Time goes by we call to check on it no body knows anything, owner out of pocket again. She comes back into town tells us order was lost but they had one of fans stock not to go on but that fans is still not working right, we gave had it since May 21st and we are having to deal with manufacture. Will not buy from them again. Why Im upset these fans are $499.99 each.

My project today was fixing a broken kitchen drawer. I went to the hardware store for some drawer hardware and wood glue and they had both. The staff pointed me where to pick up each item. The check out was speedy. The service was friendly.

This store has Traeger grills. We had looked into buying a new grill and did a good amount of research before making the purchase. Johnnie Chuokes had the Traeger grills put together on display and we received great service from the gentlemen in that store. They explained everything to us gals and were so informative and courteous. They went so far as to show us step by step how to use the Traeger. We bought the grill and the gentlemen at the store loaded it up for us and told us to call them if we had any questions or issues. I have recommended this store to my friends for every and anything they need from hardware to grills!

Do you remember the old hardware stores as a kid? I am talking 1950s here. The kind of place that had everything you needed for the house and yard/garden. This was before the big box corporations came along and squeezed most of them out of business. Johnny Chuokes is one of those places. There are some unique products that you will only find here as well as some interesting girts that are available from Trudys gift shop in the front of the store. Lots of expert advice is delivered in person from some very knowledgeable folks. Mr. Chuoke used to (and may still) have his own radio show like the DIY programs on TV today. The place is reminiscent of the old Scriveners on Broadway for those native San Antonians from way back. Not quite as fancy, but certainly filled with great products for the home.
