I was referred by a well known gun range to have sights put on my Kimber. Considering the current situation regarding COVID I expected a long wait. Mike responded to my emails within a day and typically that day. The drop off of my weapon went smooth, he promised to be done within a week and was done the next day. The pickup process was quick and easy. The sights are secure and work great. I will definitely use them again as my gunsmith. The shop is 25 miles from my house and well worth the drive. Thanks TGD you have a new regular customer.

I dropped off a heavily used 627 that was starting to light strike, for repairs and a refinish. The folks here did an incredible job with the repair, getting some parts for free from S&W and quoting a fair price for a new rear sight. Im most impressed with the refinishing though; the gun looks incredible and feels absolutely as tight as if it was brand new. The only downside was the wait (about 6 weeks for the parts and repairs and another 2 for the bead blasting) but they are up-front and communicative about the wait times, and the final product is well worth it.

I first contacted Gun Doctor about a firearm I was looking for. They didnt have that one in stock so they recommended one different but with ALL if not MORE than what I was asking for! From the Emails back and forth to meeting everyone in person. It was a VERY pleasant experience catered to what fit my needs best! I felt no pressure or obligation to buy more expensive items or extras. Everyone was super nice and I will for sure be doing more business with them in the near future! I will be recommending Gun Doctor to my family and friends due the the exceptional service I received! Thank you GunDoctor!

I cannot say enough positive things about The Gun Doctor! I was referred to them (and Mandi, the owner) back in August. The M-1 Carbine I bought from another store, was NOT functioning correctly. I brought it in to The Gun Doctor... I was immediately treated with respect and courtesy. They told me if it could befixed, they could fix it, no problem. Mandi had EXCELLENT communication while my Carbine was in the shop, and answered all of my annoying texts! I picked it up on Monday and brought it to the range yesterday. IT SINGS! Could not be happier with the service I received, and I will not go anywhere else. Thank you Mandi! If you have ANY need for a gunsmith, dont bother going anywhere else.

ZERO STAR REVIEW!!!!!! Those people are not professional at all!! The store owner ( the woman) got extremly high attitude and she is acting like we are for them. I did two transfers with them and both time they give me hard time. When i was doing the second one they just close the store for few day not telling me anything. The gun was returned to the sender . The 48 dollars price for transfer is hudge ripoff. You can do it for 20 dollars with the much more nicer people. I also feel so sorry for the guy who works for her. He is only one nice person in this place. This is not a real gun store . This is not even looks like a gun store !!!!. I got good piece of advice for all of you .... go to other place ... we got so many nice gun stores around with much better customer service and prices ......

I took the concealed carry class here with a co-worker of mine, based on a recommendation he got. All of the staff were very attentive, patient and knowledgeable. We were not able to complete both stages of the class within the sessions originally scheduled, so Mandi, Michael, James, and Neil stayed in contact with us for several weeks until a suitable date was found. There is a casual family atmosphere here and I would recommend The Gun Doctor to anyone.

Just needed some basepads put on my 1911 mags, just a simple job. Waited 4 months and heard nothing back. Finally went over to the shop and they said they “just didn’t get to them.“ The one star is simply for the lack of effort put towards a job that with their tools would’ve taken minutes. This is no way is towards the kind older gentleman at the front that apologized to me.

A gunsmith that I have dealt with in the past who specializes in restorations and custom builds suggested The Gun Doctor as a place to consider for the more regular and routine needs that I may have. Apparently, he knew the original owner of the business from when they were both starting out in the 70s.I decided to give The Gun Doctor a try and brought in a rifle for a strip and clean. I was told it would be about 2 to 4 weeks and cost up to $125.00. Fine. After 8 weeks, not having heard anything, I called and was told by the woman on the line (who I believe was the same person I originally dealt with) that the gunsmith would be working on my rifle the next day. (What a coincidence!) 2 weeks later, not having heard anything, I decided to pick up my rifle and take it elsewhere. When I arrived, I was told that the work had just been done. When I pointed out that the 2 to 4 weeks turned out to be 10 weeks, all I got was I apologize. No explanation for the delay. Nothing to make me feel that my business was important. No information to let me know that it would be alright to continue to do business with the place in the future without a similar experience. Just several I apologize statements. Nothing more. There are other gun shops that are better run, do good work for a fair price and do a good job of making you feel important as a customer. Maybe this place was good when under the control of prior people, but, in my opinion, that is certainly not the case now.

The Gun Doctor is my favorite local gun shop. Small enough to get to know the staff and have that local feel and large enough to have an interesting mix of inventory. They have an above average collection of military surplus firearms, interesting older classic firearms, along with modern tactical firearms. Mike is extremely helpful. Kevin, the gunsmith, is very talented. A friend had his 1911 redone, by Kevin, and it is a work of art. Kevin made a few suggestions over and above what was asked for that really pulled the piece together nicely. The owner has just the right mix of salty attitude and customer service skills to make each visit interesting. Even if I am not in the market for a new acquisition I will stop by to see if there is anything new and interesting in inventory.

Stopped in on the recommendation of a friend and now i wont go anywhere else for gunsmithing. I was having an issue with getting 2 rifles on paper when I was told by the store I bought them from that they were boresighted. I walked into The Gun Doctor with my son and started talking with Michael about what we needed done. Michael checked out both guns, answered a bunch of my questions and set us up for the work. One of the rifles was needed back pretty quickly for a youth hunt and the staff at The Gun Doctor definitely delivered. After 4 shots and a few minor clicks on the scope, the .243 was dead on. Again, I wont go anywhere else and Ill buy my guns from them in the future. Great shop! Thank you Michael. Hopefully Ill have a pic for the shop of a nice buck in a few weeks.

The Gun Doctor is probably one of the best firearm dealers in the Chicago suburbs. The people are very cool, and friendly. For a new person just starting to learn about firearms, this place is very welcoming. I was chearfully greated the moment I walked in, and felt very comfortable talking to the person who was helping me. I probably could have stuck around and talked for an hour because the person helping me was a friendly guy.I visited today to sell an M4 carbine, and though I didnt get as much for the sale as I would have hoped for, I feel confident they gave me the best deal they could comfortably afford. The transaction went smoothly, and with no hassle at all, so I feel it was still worth taking less than my expectated amount. I will definitely be coming back.PS, Richard Burns isnt my real name... I chuckle at those people that have the negative reviews regarding transfer fees and gunsmith costs. This is a business and making money is what keeps the lights on. Nobody forces you to shop at any one location. As I tell my customers....”you can always find cheaper but be careful what you wish for.”

Review №62

Highly recommend you stay away from this place. I read some of the negative reviews but figured since they were 5 min away and I only needed something simple I would go speak with them and get a price. I called first explaining I needed a small rail mounted on the side of my AK so as to attach a scope mount. Its approximately 4 inches long and has three small nuts and bolts to attach it. Even though I asked for a rough estimate on the phone I was told they would have to see it. So I brought it in and found both the gunsmith and the other employee helping customers. So while waiting I pulled out my cell phone to look up the YouTube video that shows the mounting procedure. I was almost immediately told I calls not use my phone and the employee motioned to a sign that says no cell phone video, audio recording or pictures. I stated I was not taking a picture or video but just looking up the YouTube video of what I wanted them to do to my rifle. I was told that they dont know that and I could be doing something like texting a friend that they had a particular gun he wanted and then I would make an illegal purchase. So lets stop there for a moment, they actually are suggesting that a customer is possibly conspiring to commit a crime because he is using his phone to type. Now the obvious thing would be that anyone who actually wanted to commit this particular crime could leave the store, contact anyone they wanted, and then return to the store to buy a firearm. Pretty stupid logic, but it gets better. When the gunsmith was free he came over and I removed my rifle from its case, he acknowledged I was the customer that had called and I set the rifle back on the case with the side the rail would mount to facing up. He immediately picked up the rifle and turned it over, I said thats not the side the rail mounts to. He said he knew that (dont think he had a clue). I then showed him the package with the rail and the three small nuts and the three small bolts. He asked me what size tap to use. I said you dont put threads into the receiver you use the small nuts and bolts provided. He seemed surprised. I then asked if I could show him the video I had on my phone and he watched a few seconds of it. I told him if he did not want to attach the rail I could do it myself if he just drilled the three small holes and the only reason I wasnt doing it myself was that I wanted to make sure they were perfectly level. He then told me the fee would be $120. I told him I thought that was a lot for drilling three holes and he shrugged his shoulders and said thats what we charge for mounting a rail. Now I know another local gun shop that charges $80 an hour for gunsmith work, in fairness I do not know what the Gun Doctorshourly rate is but if I can watch a 7 minute YouTube video showing a novice mounting this rail, I would think a professional could do it in under an hour. This guy was either an idiot or just a rip off.

Needed some work done on a Mosin Nagant (I am very unhandy when it comes to drilling and cutting). Was going to ship parts out for work when a friend recommended this place with a warning about the slow turn around time. When I dropped my rifle off there was a few customers ahead of me and one guy behind the desk who was knowledgeable and helpful with all the customers (aka I had to wait a bit for service). Placing my order was easy, he saw the mosin and PU scope and knew exactly what I needed and gave a 3-5 week ETA.....6 weeks later I get the call that its finished. Upon picking it up I could not be happier scope is mounted solidly, the stock was cut with next to no gap between it and the scope mount, bore sighted and the bolt action was unaffected (smooth as far as mosins go). This is my first scoped gun so I was surprised when I actually hit the target at about75 yards :) So overall I am very satisfied, little gripe about the wait time but knew what I was getting into from word of mouth and reading reviews, and the quality work was definitely worth the wait. I did not purchase anything else so I am unable to comment on their other services. Thanks for the good work guys!
