They let me try some guitars from behind the glass, answered all my questions. Very friendly. They gave me a great price on a reverb pedal that Ive always wanted and even gave me one of their power supplies that they use for demoing pedals from the back because the store was out. Great selection of vintage guitars and amps, great atmosphere, very knowledgable staff! Couldnt recommend it enough. Support your local music stores!

I’ve been shopping with Metro sound for over 25 years. The owner and his employees are friendly and knowledgeable. They are patient in explaining things to me and my son and eager to help us try out equipment. I just picked up a guitar I’ve had for years which they set up for me. It plays great - maybe better than it has ever played. The selection of new and used equipment is interesting and always changing. If you are buying, selling or need repairs or set up, support our local shop and give Metro a shot.

Really cool place with an awesome and helpful staff! Tommy is amazing! He helped me with a very unusual request as I tried to locate a t-shirt as a present for my friend over a phone call without remembering what the shirt looked like since I had seen it a month prior... My only description was a black shirt on a hanger in the front of the store haha. Tommy was so kind and emailed me photos of all of the shirts available in the store and got the one we guessed was THE shirt shipped to me as soon as we got off the phone! It was the correct shirt we had seen a month prior and my friend loved it :). This is just one example of the staff going above and beyond for their customers!

SCAM BUSINESS, DO NOT BUY FROM WEBSITE**I paid for a Rhodes piano and they knowingly sold it to someone else a day later on reverb.com**I bought a Rhodes piano on their online shop after it was advertised that they would ship to the lower 48 on their reverb page and their website. It was $200 cheaper on their website and I thought “this is a legitimate business, I shouldn’t worry about going through their website and bypassing reverb”. I was wrong! I immediately sent a message to their reverb account telling them I bought it on their website. They responded saying that they were worried about shipping it and KEPT THE AUCTION UP. I heard nothing back and called the shop the next afternoon and the guy won’t give me any shipping details but says “we’ll figure it out”. Keep in mind I have already paid and the auction is still up. At this point I’m suspecting that they are pulling something. I look and see that the exact same piano was sold on reverb almost 24 hours after I bought it and paid for it. I again hear nothing and wait until today to call again. They sold it to the guy on reverb and say they’ve refunded my money but it’s not in my account yet. Absolutely terrible business model and I think it’s a scam. They tried to make up some sort of BS about how it was confusing that I reached out on reverb, which is totally a lie and I can prove it. They knew that piano had sold and they kept it up anyway to try and get more money. Don’t do business with these people and don’t listen to their excuses because they knew what they were doing and it’s fraudulent.

This place is absolutely great. Ive never been to a locally owned music store with better prices and a better selection. From the top of the line to starter packs, e everything is there and everything is priced accordingly. The staff are very welcoming and knowledgable. They dont fail to jump at a chance to help you. Very rarely do you find a music store who actually wanted to help musicians and not just rob them of theyre money. This place is one of those rarities. I visited this store in the 1990s when it first opened, to try to sell an instrument I had, through consignment at the store. The owner was willing to do it, and I left it there. After about 3 months, I called and asked him if it had sold, and he said no. So I accepted that and went back to the store to pick it up.When I arrived, I knew then why it hadnt been sold: it was in a disheveled mess in a corner of the store with easily a 1/2 in. coating of dust on it. (The stores staff flunked marketing presentation 101) Then the owner went on to lay blame on me for it not selling since it had been altered from its classic factory configuration, which was total bunk. I walked out of there, no further words were exchanged, and havent been back since. To be polite, the owner was not very hospitable or friendly, which other reviewers have alluded to with stronger words. Im not surprised by the other reviewers negative remarks. I dont how that store stays in business with hours of 10 am-5 pm and closed on Sundays and Mondays. Well, it makes this store even easier for me not to return to.

I have shopped here for more than 15 years and have bought 2 guitars an amp and lots of strings from them. The staff has to deal with idiots all the time so if they appear to be rude its the territory. If they dont let your 5 year old bang on the drums its because they are annoying. I will say that I no longer shop there because I live in the west end and have to great shops that I deal with regularly. If your downtown and looking for a good deal on used gear you may just find a rare gem there.

What a great small business!! Went in last week asking to see if they had any card board boxes for shipping guitars for sale or laying around in the back and they said they were actually in need of getting boxes as well, and needed to ship guitars that same day.. as did I. A very friendly guy, Mark, the owner, explained to me that there was someone in Cary town with boxes, and that if I was able to pick up boxes for him he would reimburse me, and give me a box, and said I could even ship the guitar out of his shop that day. I was more than happy to do this, desperate to ship it fast! When I got back the box ended up being too small, but Mark was able to find another bigger box in the shop that even had a neck supporter in it. He ended up wrapping it, packing it full of shipping peanuts, and taped the crap out of it. In the end he saved me almost 40 bucks!, emailed me the tracking number that day, put insurance on the package, and even offered to email the person I was shipping it too. Im very happy I went in that day! also-- Aside from the great customer service and friendly old pooch roaming around the shop; They had some pretty frickin sweet guitars and all sorts of instruments in there, real cool vintage stuff! def worth checkin out!

To be fair, its hard for me say what this place is like today, because Ive never been back since my 2nd visit. Back in the mid 90s, just starting out with little cash flow, I had purchased a guitar head and cabinet here. About a year later, I was looking to upgrade and went back with the cabinet to inquire about a trade. The guy working in the store (I think he was possibly even the manager) remarked that he was not interested in trading dirt for dollars. This was the same gear they had just sold me about a year earlier. I never forgot that feeling of belittlement, hence never returned. YMMV.

I went there to get my first guitar thinking it would be better than going to a big store. I asked for help and went with the staff recommendations, now that I know a little more and has been able to compare instruments I realized I got a pretty crappy and overpriced instrument, not really what I was looking for, it seems to me they were more interested on selling me their lessons than really helping, I guess Ill stick to big stores and give up about believing on helping small stores.

There are many music stores in Richmond, VA. I have lived in Richmond for my entire life. Metro Sound and Music is the most expensive of them all - from pedals to guitars - big inflation. Do not bother trying to park downtown to go spend more money than you have to. Go to sam a or guitar ctr and you will be much happier. The owner of Metro Sound will lowball you on anything you try to sell to him as well. I was insulted with the price he offered for some quality equipment I attempted to sell to him. I would have thought a small local business would take a different, frankly a friendlier approach to its customers. As a musician for many years, I will not be returning to Metro and I suggest whoever reads this review to avoid the store as well.

Ive tried really hard to like metro sound. Most of the employees are very friendly and try their best to be helpful. Unfortunately, I have had very bad experiences with the owner.I brought an amp in for repair, complaining about a hum in the reverb tank, scratchy pots, and general noisy signal. I also asked for them to replace the tubes. This was in February. It is now July, and I have just gotten all the repairs completed. When I first dropped the amp off in the middle of February, I told them I had a show on March 4th, and was leaving for a 2 month long tour right after that. They said it would be no problem getting it done by then.I called a couple days before the show, and they had not opened it up yet. They then started the repair, and replaced a couple of capacitors and a couple of pots. I called them the night before the show, and was told they hadnt finished all the repairs but that I could come pick up the amp anyway. I came and picked it up, and paid about $300 for parts and labor. The amp worked, but most of the issues I described when I first brought it in were still there.I left for tour with an amp that still didnt have functioning reverb, still had scratchy volume pots, and still had a high noise floor. About half way through the tour, someone from metro sound called me to ask if the repair work I had done was to my satisfaction. I told them no, several of the issues I described when I first brought in the amp were still be present. The person on the phone told me that I could bring the amp back when I returned from tour, and they would finish the work they started before I left at a reduced labor rate. When I got back from tour, I brought the amp in, and was accused of lying about the phone call. The owner said that there was no way anyone could have promised anything like what I was promised, and that I was trying to take advantage of him and get free service on my amp. After a little bit of back and forth, they finally agreed to take it back and finish the work. Again, I got the amp back (again, barely in time for a show), and again the noise and scratchy pots werent fixed. They installed a new reverb tank, but didnt do anything else. I brought the amp back again, and the owner ended up shouting at me, again claiming I was taking advantage of him and eventually telling me that I should find somewhere else to take my repairs.I have heard from fellow local musicians that metro sound, and the owner specifically, have a reputation for being difficult, unhelpful, and rude to customers, and now I have first hand experience to confirm that. Thankfully, Fan Guitar and Ukulele have started servicing amps recently. Their labor rates are cheaper, and the owners are the most pleasant people Ive ever met. I will be taking all my future repair work to them, and advising anyone who asks my opinion to stay away from metro sound at all costs.I saw there are plenty of negative reviews on here already, so Im not necessarily adding anything to the discussion, except maybe just adding more evidence against them. It seems to me that most of the issues people have with Metro Sound wouldnt exist if the owner would just be pleasant with his customers, instead of acting confrontational and defensive towards people who are dissatisfied.

***CAREER MUSICIANS NOT WELCOME HEREMy bandmate and i were in town on vacation and we stumbled upon this store after seeing online that we could use their studio to jam for only 20 an hour, which was a steal, when we entered the store they had a lot of great inventory and it was really nice and clean. when we inquired about the studio space the rude guy at the front desk told us we needed to book it a day in advance, understandable if they had people booked for that day..but they didnt the store was empty. so after talking to the guy working we offered to pay 60 for one hour to which he replied i would have to set everything up..we said we could help or just do it ourselves with a credit card on file if there were any damages... this was not our first time setting up equipment not only in a studio but in general so its not like we didnt know what we were doing... after talking to him he finally said you guys probably could but i dont want to ask the owner and im not feeling up to having to do any of that...we left and went to another music shop a ways away who not let us do exactly what we had hoped to do...turns out we both bought new guitars as well as some new tops for my set...so with this lazy guy they lost out on 3,200 worth of sales because he is lazy so with all of this said and done dont shop here im sure their equipment is good but customer service blows...i will make sure every band we know and travel with will know to stay clear of this place and to take the 10 minute drive to go where musicians are welcome.
