My daughter and I stopped by here for lunch. I had the liver and onions with brown gravy. She had what was called chunky pancakes. It had banana slices and other fruits in it. The Dinner had a lot of reproduction 50s and 60s memorabilia. They have a large selection of ice cream dishes. The waitress seated us and was very nice. I had learned of this dinner on the radio. Its just off interstate 95 just outside Richmond Virginia.
I stopped in this place on a whim one day passing by and its become a regular place for me whenever Im in the area. Its a classic American diner with chrome and old movie posters on the wall, great fare, and friendly fast service. Ive walked in here many times with only 20 minutes to spare and still had plenty of time to eat and everything. Servers are very friendly and the kitchen is very fast. I usually just get eggs, bacon, and coffee but the specials I have had have all been great reliable american food. If youre in the area looking for a quick bite, stop in and relax.
I had the opportunity to frequent the streets of Richmond. I always enjoyed walking Cary Street visiting the lovely restaurants. However, I must confess that one of the more interesting places I accidentally found was on Parham Road when my son and I stopped for gas on one of the many trips to DC... River City Diner North. This restuarant is one of those rare finds one seeks out but seldom finds if you desire home cooking with original ingredients less prepackage food. Keep in perspective while I have had access and visited many wonderful five star restaurants (i.e. Heron/Umstead Hotel Cary NC, Intercontinental Shenzhen China, etc.), I grew up in a small North Carolina fishing village, Beaufort NC. The old adage, you can take the boy out of the woods but you can not take the woods out of the boy. I found this restaurant exquisitely blue collard, wonderfully retro, undeniably and refreshing Southern hospitality and unbelievably home cooking style. My taste buds revel in this culinary delight.
A lot of people post pics of their food and thats cool. But this time Im going to post the opposite- the plate that was practically licked clean!! I think that speaks for itself.Nice old school diner decor, prices and portions were spot on, bathrooms were clean, and the waitress and hostess were friendly. Not a bad choice at all for breakfast. Id definitely go back!
This diner is set in the 70s I believe based on the oldie music that was playing.Seating is with social distancing and decor brought back memories. The foods was delicious. I recommend the chicken tender platter. Chicken was battered not heavy and tasted like my mom used to make. The grilled chicken sandwich is also an excellent choice.Bathroom (ladies side) was very clean.Im looking forward to going back. Recommend for families, friends hanging out or any occasion to have some delicious diner food.
We often go to River City Diner for Sunday morning breakfast; probably eat breakfast there once or twice each month. While we can not attest to fare other than breakfast, we can say that the breakfast items we order are consistently tasty and served with a smile. The items we typically order include things like omelets, breakfast quesadillas, pancakes, eggs, french toast, bacon, sausage, english muffins, grits, orange juice and coffee.90% of the time, the portions are huge and we end up taking leftovers back home. Occasionally, a different cook might be in the kitchen and portions are not so huge and we have no leftovers... regardless of the cook, the food arrives hot, well cooked and tasty. There are occasions when the hotel next door has a large group staying there and we end up seeing them at the diner. Seems like the hotel might not communicate well with the diner staff, and there are not enough servers to handle big rushes like that. Even so, the wait is rarely more than 15 minutes from order to tableing. The interior of the diner is... 1950s diner like. It is not a fancy or new place, but it does have a unique atmosphere. It is not an inexpensive establishment (in terms of places like Dennys or Aunt Sarahs), but we find the food to be a step up and worth the price.
I love this diner and staff is so nice. Food is excellent but they are closing for good. Last day on 12/6/2020. I am really sad.😓
My husband and I stopped in and we both got omelets. They were so delicious!! He got the ham and cheese and I got the seafood. The service was great and they even let us stay for a while until the rain let up without hassling us to leave like a lot of places do. Nice, friendly staff. Love the decor!!!!
My dinner from River City Diner was satisfying as always. I called in an order for pickup and the service was quick and the staff were friendly and polite. I have never had a problem with food here.
The food and service were great!!! Really generous portions so we were able to split our breakfast and it was plenty, BUT ther coffee is HORRENDOUS. Its the super cheap, watered down dishwasher coffee that they charge you over THREE BUCKS for and I could only handle drinking half a cup!! Id rather they upgrade their beans, make it strong enough, and limit the refills.
Im very picky about where I eat when traveling. We choose this place randomly and was not disappointed. The food was good. I had the country fried steak, mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese and the bacon quesidila. This is my now go to place when Im in the Richmond area.
Just happened upon this diner at a gas stop on 95. Amazing hospitality, outstanding cheesesteaks and free drink refills. Will definitely be back. Give it a try!!
Cute 70’s theme! The service was great! Definitely coming back soon! The breakfast was on point!
Our waitress was very kind and attentive. Our table was clean and the atmosphere was pleasant. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. Collectively we all thought that our food at most was lukewarm. The crab cakes were yummy and the best part about my dinner, but the mac and cheese was nearly inedible. Very hit or miss! Willing to try again in the future!
Ive passed by this diner countless times. I finally decided to give it a try. The flavor of the food and service exceeded my expectations. I will definitely order the crab cakes again.
This is a real old fashioned Diner. Good simple food, pleasant, attentive service and awesome pies. Easy off ramp off 95 just North of Richmond - has a sign on the highway. Basic breakfast (served all day) lunch, dinner - or just a coffee and a piece of pie - well worth the stop.
We had a great experience! Our waitress, Annette (I hope I remembered her name correctly) was very friendly, and gracious. Well be back again and again. Oh yes, the food was great, as well!!😁😁
Great dining experience. Very nice dinner, and atmosphere. Both waitresses were very nice. Chelsea who was my waitress went above and beyond. The crab cake was to die for. I will be back
Absolutely BEST place ever!!!! We love the food, everytime its perfect. Delicious and just makes you feel at home. Erica is an amazing server, shes sweet as can be. She goes above and beyond for her customers and believe me, you wont need for a thing. We even have kids birthdays here, had my husbands birthday here. The cakes are just scrumptious!!! Try the hummingbird cake, you wont be disappointed. We love this place, you will too.
Our waitress was very friendly and efficient. The food was fast and delicious. Weve found our new breakfast home
Excellent service!! Reuben was delicious! Glad I stopped here. They have excellent servers, so kind! We were in a hurry and they had us fed quickly with a smile! Thank you so much!
Great for a quick salad at lunch time. Never had anything else though. Service is nice.
Great food and service. Sad to hear its closing on the 6th of December.
Great service, good food, seating for a few or for many. This is a good solid diner that provides exactly the food you expect. They do have a liquor license, though you may have to sit in the Bar end of the diner for that. Breakfast is great with large portions and very filling. Lunch and Dinner are good too but we tend to dine her for breakfast/brunch.
We had breakfast at this diner this morning. We had a group of nine. The greeter was terrific, got us seats in about 15 minutes. Had never been there before. Great menu, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. Everyones order was correct and believe me when I say that I had enough food to share with my daughter, my son AND a friend! Delicious food. Great service. Will definitely go back.

Great big breakfast and attentive service. Fair prices for large portions.
Awesome food and service! Great atmosphere. you can go for brunch have fuzzy navel mimosas and bring your kid. Fun friendly atmosphere for all ages!! PS. Love love love the owners. Great guys whom Ive seen an action care about their business and their customers unlike any other.
Great little old-fashioned diner with lots of atmosphere including a motorcycle on display, movie posters, old signs, etc. Best grilled cheese with bacon and tomato I ever had, and a thick creamy vanilla milkshake. Friendly efficient staff. First-rate all the way.
This place had very good customer service. The food was fresh and hot and came out at a reasonable amount of time
Good menu choices for breakfast. Havent been there at other times. Reasonable prices. Tasty food. Good service.
They have daily breakfast specials (not sure about lunch) for $5.55! Generous portions, very tasty. Best part were the servers! Very sweet, and even gave my daughter 2 quarters so she could get something out of the gumball machine. This type of customer experience is quickly dying out, and it really made my morning! Thank you ladies!
Update: 7/10/2020Food was not nearly as greasy as the last visit. The service was good, but still a tad slow. I ordered the mandarin chicken salad and really enjoyed the dressing and chicken. The staff does wear face masks to help combat COVID and the tables are spaced out to allow social distancing. Overall, Id give a 3.5 star rating this trip.March 2020:Ive stopped at this diner at least two or three times a year, passing through for a road trip. The past two times have been just alright. The food was incredibly greasy and the service was pretty slow. Nothing really jumped out that put River City Diner on the map for a need to return basis.
Just moved to the area, so naturally I needed to know where a good diner was. For both late night food and for breakfast, and River City Diner was perfect for that. Most meals were about $11-15 and they all looked great. The vibe is a classic style diner and really what you expect when you think of a diner.Had a burger and it was great!
Went on a Friday night and was one of three groups in the entire place. Its frequently pretty slow and the customers are kinda ratchet. I love it. I prefer this River City over any of the suburban locations. The service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and all of our food arrived promptly. The French toast was just dry enough to really soak up the syrup. This is how its supposed to be done! The rest of my party was happy with their meals. If you like breakfast for dinner and are to good (or sober) for a Waffle House, Id recommend this location.
This is near the house and in a super convenient location right off the highway, but it wasnt too busy the last time we visited in the evening. Its a rather large restaurant with plenty of room to spread out. Ive had better diner fare, but Ive also also worse - my crab cake dinner was solid (the hush puppies were probably my favorite). I tried some of my friends meatloaf dinner, which was also pretty good. If youre looking for a standard quality diner this one will be right in line with your expectations.
Service was great. Food was pretty good. Place was clean
Fun diner food with breakfast available all the time. Generous portions with especially good french fries. Terrific servers, but Lee Ann is super wonderful, helpful, and looks out for each person she serves. This is an excellent choice for a location to meet with your friends driving through Richmond on Interstate 95, only a block away for easy on and off.
The dining area theme of 60s diner is nostalgic and nice. The staff are always pleasantly welcoming and are genuine service professionals. The food portions are generous and everything on the menu is quite tasty. Visiting the diner has become one of the staples of our dining out experience.
The Customer Service was Great, The Food was excellent, and I enjoyed the atmosphere! I will definitely will be coming back her the next time I’m in Richmond!
The food wasnt good. The restaurant was not very clean inside we paid $32.00 for two meals that were not fit to eat. We left a tip for the table for the waitress. Our waitress checked us out at the registe . She had another employee make change for her. She quickly put the change in My husbands hand. Later he found that she took extra $5 from him
I have been here a couple times, I have dined in and have order take out. Food is good and service is fine. I have never had a bad experience there. Worse thing to happen is I had to ask for more soda because waitress either ignored my empty glass or just didnt notice it. If you are looking for good food, friendly service and fair prices, I say give it a try...
My wife and I dropped by for dinner while enjoying a weekend in Richmond. She had the steak and eggs. I had the bacon, scrambled eggs, home fries, and toast. All was fresh and tasted pretty good.
We decided to try this out. There were a slew of empty tables but it took about ten minutes for anyone to greet us after seating. We were asked for our order then she left, forgetting to ask us about our drink order until she returned with waters. So we kept with waters. Once the food arrived we dug in only to discover that sausage gravy is translucent and contains not only sausage but corned beef and rosemary(?!?), the white gravy for the CFS had a distinct powdered sugar taste (like a glaze as it too was slightly translucent), the fries were soggy, and our waitress was no where to be seen. I tried to eat the biscuits but about half way through literally scraped the gravy off. The biscuits were great, fried apples were good, and the dipping sauce for the onion rings was great. Our child had chocolate chip pancakes and eggs. I had to go to the front to pay, which may be policy but we wouldnt know since that would be the third and last time I saw our waitress. We paid, we tipped, but we did not stack our plates and we will likely never go back.
Standard diner fare (which I consider a high compliment on its own!) With its own character, friendly service, and enough unique dishes to justify its existence alongside the thousands of other diners in the country - we ordered three very different breakfast dishes and all came out in a timely manner, correct in every detail, and delicious, from the more common (blueberry pancakes with various sides) to the extreme (garbage plate with eggs, potatoes, cheese, sausage gravy, and *chicken tenders*).Great music on the jukebox, classic posters and other decor including an entire motorcycle! Well worth the time for diner/Americana enthusiasts
Service was good, food was ok. Loved the atmosphere. Serving is very generous. Scrambled eggs over cooked. Over easy eggs underdone. Homefries tasted more of the mashed potato nature. Would not recommend if your looking for good ol comfort breakfast.
Classic diner with all you could expect and More!Food is not premade, eggs are cracked, not poured, the home fries are The Best! Everything made to order, & your specifications! The server will address you as, Hun and Sweetie - it fits, lace it up!
We stopped by for bite to eat after hiking all day. We were the only patrons in the diner. I asked for milk with my coffee; did not receive it. Asked for green beans with my sandwich as my side. The sandwich came with fries and the waitress laughed and said “ oh that’s right you wanted green beans.” She did bring the green beans. She never came back to the table. We finished eating and waited. She was gabbing with her co-workers. We walked up to the register and she said “oh we were talking about UFOs.” Really? How about giving good service to the only customers in the place? The food was fair (hence the 2 stars) but the service was terrible! Inexcusable. We will not be back - ever!
The food is diner food and it is always consistent. Blt was spot on the fries could have used another couple minutes in the dryer. The staff is wonderful and always very accommodating and it is appreciated. If you are in the mood for diner food you will not be unhappy the shakes are terrific.
Food is good and portions are generous. A little pricey. Only detractor is every time I have been in there it smells like theres a problem with the drainage system and sewer. It stinks! Fix that, guys and you have a top notch place!
Classic diner fare in a cute retro setting. The service was a bit slow in spite of a nearly empty diner. Hubbys burger was great and he was impress that they included mayo on the side. My mashed potatoes were lukewarm at best but tasted fine otherwise. Its very convenient off of 95. We would definitely stop again.
Its okay... my server was nice and the food came quickly. Food was good but nothing to write home about
Restaurant was very nice. Good food and excellent service. A lot of food for the money. I will dine here again for sure.
Stayed at Quality Inn that is attached and didnt expect much. Went for dinner and had an incredible server Chelsea and NY strips that were as good as any steakhouse. Cute diner decor, clean, friendly, and great food! Right on 95 for a quick stop.
Excellent breakfast! I had the French toast, scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, and home fries. There were about 3 different types of French toast, including one made with raisin bread. The eggs could be scrambled with one of about 4 different cheeses, including Swiss or pepper-jack. The home fries were tasty, fried with sweet onions. These are not crispy home fries though. They were the soft kind. Im not sure if they will make them crispy to order or not, as it was not offered as an option. They also had several other enticing looking menu items. If you stay at the attached hotel, you can get a breakfast voucher to eat from a limited breakfast specials menu. The breakfast specials are smaller portioned but still full of flavor. The voucher does not account for tips though so you may want to bring a few dollars to tip with.
Good little nostalgic diner with 50s decor and oldies music. Features breakfast all day as well as sandwiches, burgers and fries, not to be forgotten the RCD chili. Hand-spun shakes and sweet deserts. Hometown atmosphere with friendly staff. Was passing through town but go that way often will stop again.
Great service and great food for a fabulous price. Michael was our server. When I asked about the Mississippi catfish he highly recommended it and gave suggestions on how the folks preparing it did it best. He was right. Growing up on the Mississippi River Ive eaten my fair share of catfish. I havent had it in a while and I wasnt disappointed! Michael even went above and beyond to find an outlet to charge my 14 y/o phone. He instantly became her hero. Even the gentleman seating us was extremely pleasant. We had a great experience!
The staff is normally on point at this establishment. The food is normally very good and freshly made. The location is easy to get in-and-out of. The price is reasonable. There is a nice variety of food. The restrooms are clean and well taken care of.
Stopped by on a Saturday. Greeter was nice, but our waitress was seriously lacking in personality. Food was good but then they allowed a family to bring their pet dog into the dining area. That is not clean, gross
Food was horrible and overpriced.. first time there. They had certain specials for breakfast that we werent aware of.. that were reasonably priced.. but they didnt tell us. Definitely will not go back
Waitresses are friendly. You get your moneys worth a food. Atmosphere is relaxed.
Got seated right away, server came over quick, food came out quick. I got the pancakes and eggs meal and it was pretty good. The pancake tasted homemade and not frozen. Would I come back? Absolutely. The place has a 50s 60s look to it.
The waitress was excellent. However, my breakfast was pretty mediocre, and the prices certainly didn’t makeup for it. I’d expect much higher quality food for what they’re charging.
The staff really went out of their way to make our visit as good as possible. We came in really late as a stop in our long drive, but they were super sweet, even after having to Dela worth some pretty terrible people before us. If were ever in the area again, well definitely be stopping by (at a more reasonable hour).
If youre traveling on 95 through Virginia and need something to eat this is a great place to stop. Its easy on and off the highway, the food is good, the selection is varied and the staff is friendly. Also, the decor is a 50s/60s theme including an actual BSA motorcycle mounted in the center of the dining room. That alone is worth the stop.
Great diner. Staff always freindly. Usually attend for a large group meeting. Staff always does a great job with the large group. Food is really classic diner food. Definitely cooked in the really classic diner style. Has a bar you can sit at, tables, or booths. The best diner I have found in Richmond so far! We have ordered burgers or breakfast and everything comes out good. The few problems we have get fixed quickly.
Great food. Great Service.
Love this place! Waffles are amaz balls! Biscuits are warm fluffy and delightful. Staff are always warm and welcoming. It is a bit pricey for me but the portion sizes are large.
The staff are friendly. I ordered a omelet, fried apples, English muffin and a egg white sandwich. The food was delicious. Cant wait to go back.
The waitresses are friendly and prompt to the table. Looks like a retro diner. Best part is the portions are large and affordable. Breakfast offered all day. Recommend Heres Looking at You Kid 2 large pancakes with choice of sausage or bacon. Choice of potatoes, fried apples or grits. 2 eggs made to order. For lunch the Southern Hospitality Burger., hamburger with pulled pork and onion rings on top of the burger. The food comes quick!
Very slow with few customers and food came out cold. Only the plates were hot since they sat under the warmer forever. Waitress was very pleasant and rarely came by to see us. Wont bother coming again.
Pancakes were great and the seafood omelet was loaded with crab. My waitress Chayron provided excellent service. Definitely going back for the pancakes.
First time there - travelling through - and it was good. More chocolate chips in the chocolate chip pancakes!! 😁 Very reasonably priced for good food.
Server was very friendly and not too busy to take time out of her day to sit and conversate. Food is great as well
Best darn breakfast diner hands down.
