Great old staple in Richmond. Love the look of the joint, gives a very 1950ish style vibe in the place. Staff was great and very attentive. We got a BLT with a side of mashed potatoes, a cheeseburger with fries, open faces turkey sandwich with collard greens and a patty melt with onion rings. Almost everything was very good. My daughter got the side of mashed potatoes, as she said they were whack. Not a fan with skins still on, but they are kind of very lumpy almost scallop potatoes like and mixed with something not quite sure how they were made, but because its a large part of the Open Face sandwich, I didnt eat very much of it. My wifes fries came out stale and a little cool, but when we told the waitress she made her a new batch which were good. My son loved his patty melt and daughter likes the BLT, my wife said the burger was alright. We then got really what they are know for, some ice cream.. got a nice banana split with they substituted chocolate for cake batter. It was very good. Ive eaten here before, good old fashion diner. Can get some decent comfort food, but they rock out some milkshakes and ice cream. Well worth your time. They do have only morning and afternoon hours, think 7-3pm on weekdays.

With a group that had reservations, waited over an hour for food. A bit long. And food was dry and cold when it arrived, but understandable considering it all came at once. Waitresses were great, considering the circumstances and the group they had to deal with, they were patient and courteous. I think most restaurants experience this now Post COVID.

The Dairy Bar is THE BEST. All of their food is amazing, but I am loyal to their pancakes- this picture may explain why. They also do boozy milkshakes and make their own Bloody Mary mix from scratch. The Dairy Bar team makes you feel at home and are so friendly and accommodating.

Just passing through the area and needed a place to eat before we hit the road. The servers are nice. The food was okay. I got the western omelet and they place a slice of cheese on top which is bizarre. My husband got the French toast and they had a cinnamon bun flavor which was amazing. My kids got the pancakes and devoured them.

This is such a great little breakfast and lunch diner! It has a jukebox and an old-time feel to it, as if you are in the 1920s and 30s. It is part of the building where milk was actually produced for the city of Richmond.Definitely one of my favorite places to eat!

I love diners and was super excited to try this place since it’s been around for so long. Our server seemed nice enough but she was terrible at her job. We sat there for over 20 minutes before she remembered to come take our order. The next time we saw her was when she came to give the check. We never received a refill on coffee and both orders were wrong. One item was sent back and we received a half cooked omelette in return. Had it just been really bad service, I might have considered coming back but the food isn’t worth it.

We came in before a family of 4. We ordered before a family of 4. The waitress appeared to want to be elsewhere. She cordially took our orders. We waited and waited. Meanwhile the family received their food, was checked up on. We never received an explanation for the lateness of our orders. They were finishing up when we received our food. The waitress dropped off and was ready to dart away when my husband asked for mayo. And yes. My fries were lukewarm. We may give this place another tryHopefully this is a fluke and not based on any bias by the waitress.

Great prices, great food, great service. I ordered the banana split pancakes and immediately went back to bed after eating them. It was amazing and the diabetic coma that ensued was worth it.

I never thought I would wish to have Bill back! He was always so grouchy. But his wife Patricia was a lovely person and excellent cook. The place is a disaster now. None of the old staff seem to be here. Katherine was the best server ever! No one seems to know how to do their jobs. While we waited for food, another person sat down, ordered, ate, paid the check and left - all before we got our food. Another group walked out because no one greeted them. An elderly couple beside us asked the waitress what happened to their menu favorites. The menu is different, the food is worse, and the prices so much higher. What used to be a favorite breakfast place is now no longer worth our time or money. Disappointing!

Great food, friendly staff. Wish I had more time to grab a shake but was able to enjoy Eggs Beny with Crab. My only negative, and Im nitpicking, is my eggs were on the undercooked side. But for a Beny Ill take that instead of overcooked and no runny yolk. Would absolutely go back.

I’ve lived in Richmond for decades and was excited to finally try the Dairy Bar which I’d heard so much about. I don’t typically write reviews but feel compelled to be transparent with my families experience. We had a reservation and yet it took literally more than 30 minutes to get our drinks (I assumed our waitress had forgotten). And then a simple breakfast order took over an hour and was delivered cold and incorrectly. We never got what we actually ordered and the toast was rock hard. Our waitress was not visible except for the minimal times she visited our table. When we were finally served silverware was literally nowhere to be had for over 10 minutes so we just sat there trying to flag someone down to no avail. We never got butter or syrup for the kids pancakes. Hours after we left the worst brunch I’ve ever had in Richmond, our family suffered from severe stomach issues. I wish instead we’d gone somewhere else or at the least I could have made scrambled eggs and toast at home that would have been much less expensive, quicker, healthier and actually warm and tasty. Super bummed and disappointed.

This was my first time here and, I must say, very pleased.🌝 Its down one of the side streets, and unless you knew it was there, can be totally overlooked. The menu is simplistic with diner fare, like burgers🍔, grilled sandwiches🌭, milkshakes🥤, and Blue Bell Ice Cream 🍨! The vegetarian veggie soup 🍲 was absolutely delicious! A larger bowl could have been my entire meal and I would be happier than a fat kid in a candy store.☺ The half soup, half sandwich meal 🥪 was just enough to fill my empty belly and keep me satiated for the rest of the day.😋 I will definitely return to give some of their other menu items a try.😊

We have been long time fans of the Dairy Bar. Today is the first time we’ve been since it changed hands and I don’t know that we’ll be back. The quality of the food has dropped off, the bagel on my sandwich was clearly out of a bag, not the Cupertino’s I’m used to at Dairy Bar. The hash browns were mushy and under seasoned. The service was poor too. We were the first ones there this morning and we had to wait a lot, for pretty simple food. The milkshakes, while good and about the only saving grace of the meal, were smaller than they used to be but still pricy. Dairy Bar used to be special to us, but I think this experience change that.

The food was good not great the ice cream was the best part which is what theyre known for but it took entirely too long for the food to come out at least 35 to 40 minutes waiting for our meal I would recommend but only if you have time to spare

The BLTs here and milkshakes are to die for. The hosts and servers were so friendly and I had a great experience there. This is my go to spot for a quick bite to eat or a deliciously rich milkshake.

Always wanted to try this place but definitely won’t be, and will be telling all my friends to stay away! I’m a business owner myself and some of my past clients went here.. they were treated so poorly and when they wrote their review the manager didn’t apologize.. in fact did the opposite and blamed the customer! Not only am I a business owner but I used to work in the restaurant business for 10 years... never in my life have I seen something like that. That’s absolutely ridiculous and this manager and restaurant should be ashamed of themselves! Will never give them my business.

Cheap price for the service and quality! Very friendly staff. Delicious burger! Complimented wonderfully with the potato salad that came with my meal. Almost as if it were made moments before being put on my plate! Definitely recommend!!!

We use to go here quiet regularly when Bill/Patricia owned it and have been back since COVID and I understand that the industry is having a hard time getting help and we keep that in mind where ever we go, BUT Sunday morning was by far a not so pleasant experience with our waitress and I get she was new, our drinks took forever and its hard when you see people that come in way after you did that have their drinks served immediately, our food did eventually come out with the help of other waitresses (thank goodness) in the end we flagged that waitress down and gave her a tip at the end because she did more for us than our waitress... the food did come out hot with the other waitress helping, but when we went to get ice cream, we made the joke its 11:08 so we should get the ice cream by 12:08, at 11:50 she brought 3 out of the 5 ice cream desserts which had been sitting there for probably 15 to 20 minutes and melted, she put the kids in a cup trying to hide they were melting...smh .... in the end we declined the desserts because the ones that were there were melted and there was no sight of the other 2 desserts and she blamed that on who ever makes the desserts....hopefully they will get their act together because we use to be regulars and are just now getting out to eat more often, but it will be awhile before we go back.... I just think that sitting down at 9:45 am and leaving at almost noon is a lot for just ordering (3) grilled cheese/(2)chicken salad/salad/Soup and grilled chicken and trying to get some ice cream in the process. There was quiet a few tables that sat down after us and had their food way before us ... and as you can see we didnt order anything to difficult.

Nice clean restaurant with a good outdoor space in Scott’s addition. Super friendly staff and tasty food. I enjoyed the crabcake Benny even though the crabcake was fairly small, which is fine by me because I don’t need a ton of food. The French toast was out of this world and plentiful, made with fresh cinnamon bread from a local bakery, Montana Gold. The bacon was amazing. The unsweet tea is freshly brewed and strong in a good way. We will definitely be back!

First, yes I saw your sign on your door about COVID affecting service. HOWEVER COVID shouldnt affect your waiters/waitresses from 1) acknowledging that we were sitting there and 2) someone to say hey theres a [insert amount of time] wait before we can seat you. We sat there for 5-10 minutes and at least 3 staff members walked by us. There was no hello or welcome or there will be a wait. We walked out and took our business elsewhere.

I worked here and that’s why I’ve never come back. I never agreed with how any of the owners or management spoke to staff. When I worked there, they relied on servers to do sides (and desserts apparently). We’d had a high school student doing desserts, and one day he wasn’t there. I had to scoop my own ice cream. It was no big deal and I brought it to my customer. The wife that owns the place screamed at me in front of customers, because I used the single scoop cup instead of the double scoop cup. Mind you, I’d never been trained to do desserts and my customer was happy. It could have been easily been a gentle lesson.This is just one anecdote. It’s unfair when servers’ pay relies on tips, but they can’t spend enough time with customers due to other responsibilities. I’ve worked in enough restaurants to know this is somewhat normal, but it’s really not sanitary. Servers are all over the restaurant and handling money.

The food was late, cold, and the order was wrong. The hostess was continually rude and hung up on my wife multiple times. Will be avoiding this mediocre establishment from here on out, this sub par level of customer service shouldnt be able to pass in Richmond, there are much better places to eat.

The storm clouds lifted, the tides of fear receeded and the Dairy Bar is STILL STANDING! It felt so good to take kids back for their favorite milkshake diner and I swear the food has only improved! Certainly the staff remain upbeat and cheerful despite what any resteraunt must have been through, but especially the poor diners! Cmon back for pancakes and normal yall this 70+ yr old tradition is still open and still fantastic! PS. Get the French toast, its better than you think possible!

This restaurant has always been a staple in Richmond, but if you haven’t been recently you really need to check it out. Same original menu but with some spectacular changes in recipes. My experience there last week was fantastic, starting with the super-friendly staff right through our lunch. Everything that we ordered was a new twist on the original menu, and let me tell you, if you have enjoyed this diner in the past or if it wasn’t your cup of tea in the past I guarantee you will be very pleased to go back again. This is going to be a hotspot in Scott’s Addition once again as soon as you all rediscover this awesome breakfast lunch and brunch spot!

Average food but horrible table service. 8:51am July 5. Took forever to receive our food. After food was served we could not get our server back to our table. Others around us came and went. Talked to the hosts to get our final bill and she too never returned. Finally pleaded with another server who used our table number to get our final bill. Paid online left.

Went there at 1.30 PM today with lots of people still about, all we wanted to do was have some ice cream. But we were rudely turned away saying they are closed. Closing time was 2 PM.I asked her if we can have ice cream to go, but barely got a response. Weird customer service

Just a good atmosphere and good, basic food at decent prices. Great for breakfast especially. Super family friendly with a great kid’s menu. The shakes are made with Blue Bell ice cream. They lost a star because they charge a kid’s shake the same as an adult’s shake - which is insanity. I am posting a photo of my 2 year old’s hand next to the cup for size. They claimed it’s the same size as the adult shake - absolutely not true. A better deal if you get it as part of a lunch kid’s combo ($7).

BEEARE OF MOLD IN FOOD I recently visited the dairy bar diner for the first time. It took approximately 20 for a waitress to ask what we would like to drink. Once we got the food, it seemed as if none of it was made fresh. It was room temperature. Once I began to eat my ham, there was large blue mold spot in the center of the ham.

Its got some work to do. The pandemic depleted the help and experience. Theyll need to work on training new staff. And theyll get back.

Egg whites completely raw. Asked multiple times for syrup, had to go up to the bar to get a tiny plastic cup of it. Service and food was slow. No refills and no finished plates taken away, including the raw eggs. Greasy flimsy bacon. Had high hopes, was disappointed.

Weve been to the Dairy Bar a bunch of times before. Our most recent visit was the first under the new ownership. The atmosphere and friendly nature of the employees hadnt changed. The menu also felt familiar which was a relief. I have to take one star off because my reuben sandwich was severely lacking in corned beef. It was a thin layer that didnt even reach to the 4 edges of the bread, so the first few bites contained no meat. I decided to start eating as I was hungry and didnt want to delay the meal, but when the waitress stopped by I mentioned it and she agreed it was not up to par. She offered to have them remake the second half of the sandwich and I accepted. The second half arrived in a few minutes and with a full portion of fries, however - these fries were overdone. We decided to get shakes to go and those were both excellent, so that saved things a bit. There was no offer of comping or anything like that despite the disruption to the meal. In summary, it was ok, but it might be awhile before we head back. We live in Ashland and made it a destination visit in the past, but expect an excellent visit for the effort on our end.

This was our first time at Dairy Bar. In town visiting from PA. Ordered biscuits and gravy with side of scrambled eggs. Worst I ever ate! Biscuits were so hard you could break a tooth on them. Couldn’t even cut the biscuits with a knife. Had to scrape off the biscuit. Sausage was sliced tough pieces, not crumbled, in gravy. Never saw anything like it! So sorry I didn’t take a picture, but family was treating and I didn’t want to complain. Everyone else’s food looked great. My husband ordered thick country ham and he said it was dry and thin, not what menu described. My granddaughter who is 10 picked this place. Hope she never picks it again. Coffee was great, waitress was excellent.

Food is terrific as is the service. The menu has quite a variety. Deserts excellent. Try the cobbler as well as the ice cream 🍦. COVID safe.

Due to Covid19, its been a while since my husband and I have been out to eat.I searched restaurants with outdoor seating.The Dairy Bar Diner had excellent reviews with some amazing pictures of the food served.1ST impressions mean everything.I would like thank the owner for hiring Super Fantastic employees!!From the moment i called to inquire about the seating and the wait time; to the greeting upon arrival; to the time our waitress took our order; to the tine our meals arrived ; to the time we left, we had EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE!! The food was mouthwatering!!! The servings was more than expected for the price. We will definitely be back for another wonderful experience.KUDOS TO OUR WAITRESS!! Our daughter loved the photo!

Place has good selection of food and an extensive selection of deserts and shakes. I tried their breakfast options which were pretty generic but nevertheless very good. Would certainly recommend for someone looking for a good shake.

Excellent! Used to go here 30 years ago all the time when it was Curls Neck Dairy and I worked near there. I was hesitant as that dairy is closed down, but I was extremely happy, it was just as good as before, great shakes and the grilled ham and cheese sandwich was the same - perfect!

Stopped by Dairy Bar to meet some people for lunch. Good location with street parking. Service was great and food was excellent. Our server was very patient as we waited for the third person to show up. Luckily I enjoyed one of their amazing milk shakes while I waited. I had the turkey, bacon and cheese sandwich and it was excellent. Fries were crispy and plenty. I wish I wouldnt have ordered the shake so I could have eaten all the fries but now I know for next time.

Comfort food comes hot with tall 20 oz milkshakes. Make room for food or bring your own wheelchair.

I love this place! I dont live in Richmond, but when I come up, we always seem to end up here for brunch. And that is A OK with me! The service is always fast and the wait staff is very friendly and attentive. I love that the owner always comes by to check on things too! The food is delicious, I dont think Ive gotten the same thing twice. I will say they have some of the best tasting onion rings I have ever had. I highly recommend this place!!! 😻

We just moved to Richmond and had some family over. We wanted to go out for brunch on Sunday and decided to call The Dairy Bar Restaurant to check the wait since we have a baby. The man we spoke with was very nice and told us they would have a table ready for us when we arrived. Once we got to the restaurant, the same man with whom I spoke warmly greeted us and brought us to our table.The menu is extensive with lots of options for both adults and children. Our food arrived quickly and was very good. Their milkshakes are also delicious.I would highly recommend this restaurant as everyone was friendly, the service was prompt, and the food was very good.

Classic diner food but with a surprisingly good local beer selection. The staff was SO friendly! We felt like regulars immediately. Our meals were very good. Dropped one star for a couple reasons. They close at 3 but stop serving breakfast at 1:30? Seems a bit random and I wa disappointed to not get breakfast when we arrived at 1:40. Also, really do not recommend the cobbler. Everything else was so good-- fresh and homemade. But the blackberry cobbler had zero fruit in it. It was just an overly sweet gooey gel. A big disappointment.

We went around 1:30 and told there would be a 15 minute wait. The wait time was about half that, which was awesome. The kids loved their kids burgers and smiley potatoes. The waitress wasnt the greatest, unfortunately. She didnt get our food to us, another waitress did. I asked that waitress for honey mustard, and she pretended not to hear me. I was loud enough that the nearby table had heard my request. Our initial waitress did not check on us but once after that, we couldnt get refills or order milkshakes. The servers were shutting down and cleaning the section we were seated in, and we had to complain to a third waitress about the service. She said she could help us and went off to grab milkshake menus. As soon as she set them down, our original waitress appeared, obviously irritated, asking us what we would like to order. We got our shakes to go and left. The food was pretty good, but the milkshakes were very average, and the service was seriously lacking.
