Hands down the place to go for hard to find wood. Every piece I received was absolute beautiful with more figure then I would have ever expected. Their selection is incredible & it’s matched by the quality of each blank. A rare combo. They get my highest recommendation.

I went there with very little knowledge of what I wanted and within two minutes of getting there, everyone that worked there was helping me. They are knowledgeable people that didnt try to sell me anything that I didnt need. The selection is great and the prices are great even for a college kid making minimum wage. Ill be coming back to them for all my specialty lumber needs.

Mark did not let my rather amateur woodworking knowledge get in the way of getting what I needed. Also, they have a pretty extensive display of wood species sanded and coated which would help in getting an idea of what your end product could look like. Thanks, Mark!

I have been buying wood from Gilmer Wood Company to build walking canes for the last 20 years and have nothing but good to say about Myles, Ian and Mark. Thanks Guys for the great wood and service.

Actually learned about Gilmer from my local Woodcraft store, who didnt stock what I was looking for. I really like how you can search through the website looking for what you need and see photos of the actual board you are going to purchase. I picked out the piece of birdseye maple that I wanted for a bass guitar fretboard and a few days later had my board in hand. As I asked, Gilmer was good about letting me know the shipping charges before shipping the board. On top of that, its the best looking birdseye Ive seen in a long time.

I am like a kid in a candy store here. Love this place. My advice to help their business would be to have a small window of time to be open on the weekends. 4 hours would make it so much easier for us employed folk to get there. My other advice would be to keep your issues more professional. I dont need to see grown men squabbling like high school girls while I am shopping.

One stressed employee, the answer to questions about price and selection is “Its on the website.” So save yourself the trip and just check their website.

Amazing selection of exotic woods for turning, building musical instruments or other wood working. The guys here work very hard and fast so you will want to go to their website first and find what you want. Have the item number ready when you come in and respect their time. Also, if interested, get on their list for scrap barrels. Awesome deal and great pieces.

Miles is extremely knowledgeable of hard woods. He has been stacking hard woods for years and knows more about exotic woods than anyone else I’ve ever met. Their selection and prices are the best in town.

Over the past few years I have purchased a fair amount of exotic lumber from Gilmore but my my last order, placed over the weekend, I will NOT purchase from the anymore. I ordered a piece of ebony, which weighed 8 pounds. I received my invoice today, Gilmore charged over $30.00 to ship the piece of wood. When I sent an inquiry, I was told they charge $10.00 for “handling”...which includes shrink wrap, banding ( for a single piece of wood?), and wrapping. The cost is ridiculous. They do have a good selection of quality wood, but the shipping is a rip off. I got a kick from the invoice stating “they appreciate my business.”If they appreciated it, they would be more reasonable with their shipping. They need to realize there are other sources out there

I visited Gilmer for the first time a few days ago. I highly recommend it to any woodworker looking for something special for that next project. It is a warehouse, not a retail store with racks you can wander through. So you need a helper to find what you want. Fortunately, I was greeted with enthusiasm by Marc, who asked me what I was looking for (I wasnt sure) and showed me many great options. Prices are reasonable for the quality, which is very good. I am surfacing the wood I purchased and couldnt be happier with what I got. Gilmer is worth a visit. Thank you Marc.

Ive been buying from Gilmer for years. It is a WAREHOUSE, so dont expect a nice floor lay-out, lots of clerks in fancy uniforms, or all the wood stacked in neat piles with prices on everything. But you will find helpful employees, GORGIOUS WOOD, a large variety of items to choose from, and stuff you never knew existed!!! I can never get out of this place for less than $250, and my last trip cost me over $1600 - but the figured maple that I got is going to make a lot of keep-sake boxes. If you are looking for the beautiful, the rare, and a large selection (and dont mind nosing around in a working warehouse atmosphere), Gilmer is your place. Ask for Jim or Miles - they really know their stuff and can be a tremendous help in picking out what you really need for a project, not something that you think you need. Theyre not inexpensive, but not nearly as expensive as the retail shops scattered around Portland.

Great selection of woods available, have used them twice. 1st time all cool. 2nd time = Having to deal with a pretty rude member of staff (both I and the member of staff had made a mistake, but it seemed like only I had)... But more importantly, the picture online of the wood I ordered is such a different colour to how it really is - Whoever took this photo was clearly *trying* to mislead its richness of colour, flash or photoshop, Im not sure but judge yourself...Will look first for other options in the future, but will maybe use them again...

Incredibly rude people working here. The man working acting like I (female) was invisible and assumed my husband was the customer (unlike at some of the local wood stores, where Ive always been treated warmly). When we asked where something wed seen online was located the guy just told us to look on the website and stay out of his way. Wont return.
