The Portland co-op is always part of my grocery shopping itinerary. I can find products here that simply are not available in the larger stores. Highly recommended.
Love this place! Just what a co-op should be: a great selection of local/small artisan bests, friendly staff, and fresh local produce. Highly recommend it. Just be careful: you might find yourself maxing out your credit card with all the goodies.
Support the local economy! This is an exceptional co-op. The freshest, most locally sourced produce in Portland. The staff is super friendly. It feels good to keep my money in Maine even if it is a little pricey.
Its a bit better then it was before.
High quality food. Well organized. Im a member
Staff is really helpful and nice. The co-op has a great selection of quality, local, and delicious foods. I love the bulk section!
They are clean and only let very few people in at a time so there might be a little wait but it goes by quick. This store is kinda small but it has a lot of produce and dairy also so many other natural products. You can also buy your lunch they have soups and sandwiches ready to go. Friendly helpful service you can save even more by becoming a member.
The food is good, but the prices are high. I paid $27 for a burger, fries and a beer, including a modest tip.
Friendly staff and a good variety of earth-honoring products.
I don’t know. I haven’t lived here for twenty years, but I’m kind of marooned here until the spring. I bought there for a while because it was in walking distance and was the closest thing to supporting my own local market and bodega. BUT I kind of would figure if someone is a member they would say. Like every one has amnesia, which some how I feel like I’m suppose to feel guilty thinking, like I don’t care for the elderly? I like the local mom and pops and places that know my name. However, I totally felt iced by a cashier the other day for not having a membership. I know I was just buying beer, but I’ve shopped there a bunch because it was local and convenient. For being some how a local place, it felt more corporate and exclusive. Just to keep in mind, I rounded up every time. I just guess I miss being able to buy a beer with no hassle at a grocery store. I mean I’m in my forties. Just saying...
Great items. But a bit expensive
The Portland Food Co-op was a very neat little grocery store...
Lots of things you cant find in other health food stores. Great place to buy local and buy in bulk. Some things can be pricey though.
The staff here are so friendly! I love chatting with them. They often have interesting produce (my newest find there is bergamot - I think it’s a lemon? It’s amazing to bake with!)
Amazing! Bulk spices and soaps to refill. Not able to right now cause of the virus but still able to fill up and purchase an inexpensive container. Great veggie selection too.
Fantastic options. Outstanding customer service.
They were really amazing at practicing and maintaining good distancing and store practices. And were very understanding and helpful when it was obvious I was anxious. This was my first trip to a store in six months. My first time inside a building that was not my home. And I felt as safe as I feel is possible for me
Solid co-op in downtown Portland en route the Eastern Prom. Small but diverse selection of high-end goods like teas, coffees, cereals, milks and eggs and yogurts, etc. Excellent service and good social distancing measures as well. They carry 7th Gen paper products but dont come here looking for the brands youd get in a local CVS.
I’m not a member but I love shopping here. Staff is super friendly, excellent quality produce + bulk sections, extensive coffee + beer selection, and lots of hard-to-find foods for those with special (vegan/gf/organic) diets. I love that they try to source things locally and ethically. This is probably the most covid-cautious place I’ve visited during the pandemic (requires you to use hand sanitizer upon entry), but I’m thankful the employees are working + am happy to follow protocols if it helps them feel safer. Great store!
This place was really nice. It had a bunch of things I was looking for that I wouldnt find at normal stores.
This place is way too expensive. Its like their growing super power food or something.
I really wanted to like this place but it was a disappointment. There are some good local and organic products but the prices are much higher than expected (and I wasn’t expecting low prices.. I’ve shopped at co-ops for many years). The staff didn’t seem to be paying attention. They didn’t notice us needing to pay at the register.Could be worse but also could be a lot better.Edit: I’ve been in here a few times since my initial review and the customer service has been much better. Love the variety of mushrooms too :)
Facing tough competition from nearby Whole Foods, the Co-op manages to stock a more interesting and eclectic selection of local products. Unlike While Foods, the Co-ops idea of local means Maine and not just the North East. If youre visiting and want something that you cant get everywhere or just care about supporting local companies, youll want to visit the Co-op.
Always the best customer service and product selection. Way to go Portland Food Co-op for representing the local farmers and makers! I appreciate you!
You get a dirty look if youre not a regular. Especially from the clerk who had the personality of a dry rock.
Great place to grab a quick few things, fresh veggies. And friendly staff!!
Super friendly cashier!
Ill rate at one star for now as Ive never shopped there as of yet.
Horrible place that only lets 3 people in the store at a time and the cashiers are all slow because they talk the whole time. I’ll go somewhere else to buy overpriced veggies and I won’t be waiting outside
First, the Co-op is terrific, with a really nice selection of goods, including lots of beautiful local produce and meatsndairy. But also, they have been totally dependable during this awful shut-down. As stressful as it is, everyone there is always friendly and helpful. Grateful they are nearby for me.
On first blush, all seemed fairly standard. Then I started seeing bulk dispensers of all sorts of things: laundry detergent, dish soap, Maple syrup, local honey... And the list goes on! The people all went out of their way to be friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be back!
Nice small local co-op. Store layout and rules have been put in place to help with social distancing. Variety is what youd expect from a small co-op.
Nice local grocery with a good selection. They take their covid safety seriously too
Love the bulk section and they sell whole loaves of gluten free breads!
Great place. its where we go to get all our shampoos and dish soap and spices cuz you reuse your own containers you dont waste. Very smart idea I wish all stores took their ideas from this store
This place is very cute. Love how there are tables inside for you to enjoy your food. Good wifi and electrical outlets. Nice selection of food. Friendly staff
Wonderful...Efficient, kind and helpful staff, and great items of fine quality. Terrific bulk items section.
Its fine. Public bathroom is nice. Staff is always very friendly. My biggest issue with this place is with the prices. Its supposed to be a community centered grocery store for locals however I rarely ever see people from the neighborhood there. Im not sure if its serving the people they claim to be. I would love to see them address this.
Great small market. Quality products, member owned but open to all. I like that its a neighborhood market in walking distance for many.
Very good selection, especially local stuff
I dropped someone off at the Walgreens next door. Ive never been in the Portland Food Co-op place..
I come to this store a lot and the customer service is very friendly. However, today I came and had an unfriendly encounter with a cashier named Deb. There were customers ahead of us who had their own bags for her to bag and she didn’t have a problem with it. When it came to us, she asked if she needed to bag our groceries. Why would a cashier ask to bag our groceries when it’s their job? After we looked at her in shock because this has never happened before, she had a bad attitude and seemed annoyed that she had to bag some groceries...even though that’s her job. Seemed like she had a deeper personal issue with color instead of bagging some simple groceries.
You’ll never see me outside waiting in the cold for $20 Tomato’s
Ok
A great place to sample Maine-made products and fresh local produce for generally reasonable prices. Very spacious and has everything you need with new items being offered all the time. Great variety, friendly and helpful staff, and a far better experience than shopping under the florescent lights of massively large and overwhelming grocery chains. Next best place to shop after the farmers market.
There are many items available for bulk purchase, a solid selection of local produce (hope to see that expand some time in the future), and other great natural, organic, local products. I love the help yourself system for the bulk items that show that people can be trusted to be an honest shopper. Great way to foster a sense of community in my opinion.
I am new to maine and love shopping at specialty stores. I called today and asked if they could hold an item until tomorrow. I was told they cant and that is understandable. What is not acceptable is the guy telling me how inconsiderate that is to the shoppers in the store. Ok then. I will shop elsewhere since you basically just told me I am horrible to ask such a thing. I will stick with whole foods and local businesses besides this one.
The Food Co Op is unique because it carries local items made in Maine and organic items of specialty productions. I became one member because of the fresh produce. The staff that works at the Co Op are very pleasant and friendly. They create a more family atmosphere for our community. The Co Op is open to all and all are welcome to shop here.
The produce here is really good, sometimes more expensive if its local stuff, but definitely worth it! Also the staff is really friendly. And I love the selection of local products they have here. Definitely recommend becoming a member owner.
Awesome produce, farm fresh meats, and local products. Only downside (Which is significant) is that its VERY pricey. Not quite as bad as when it first opened but still makes Whole Paycheck look like the Dollar Store occasionally....
Fantastic variety. The bulk food selection is incredible with super great prices on all dried goods. The staff are awesome and friendly. Nice seating area inside and outside.
It serves its purpose, lots of natural choices... a bit expensive... if you shop there often, then joining is a good idea, but not necessary.Glad they are conveniently located on Congress St..., but theres Whole Foods and Trader Joes in town too 😊
Looks well stocked and well managed!
They sell everything local here, if not than it is properly labeled. Nice and fresh produce although on a bit expensive side, but if you want to support local farmers this is a great place to shop. They have a lot of organic/natural products from different parts of the world. Nice and friendly staff.
Great selection of locally grown, organic produce.Friendly, helpful staff
Great place. Super friendly staff and wonderful offerings. Try the GT brand rose petal kombucha, the 3-year-col-aged organic apple cider vinegar ( Sewall Orchard) or the delicious selections of organic produce or specialty baked goods or cold salads or other grab and go items
Wow loved this place. We were visiting from NJ and everyone who worked there was friendly/helpful. Great selection and the food was awsome. Their craft beer selection is amazing, even for the Portland area.
Yummy
This place is great, they have real food! There lions mane mushrooms are amazing!
Love the Co-Op hit it off with the manager and the woman infront of me in line as we were all from Westport Island
Fantastic selection and good prices. Outstanding customer service
It is so great to finally have a place in Portland that I can feel great about buying all my groceries because the Co-op is locally and cooperatively owned. I also love the wide selection of local foods. I am so glad I can buy Balfour Farm local and organic yogurt in a returnable glass container and locally grown organic fresh spinach year round. Thank you to all the hard working staff who make the Co-op a great place.
Local! Local! Local! The Portland Food Coop has a fantastic array of locally made, grown, and produced products. With an eye for quality and affordability the store is able to meet all of my shopping needs. The staff is very helpful and accommodating, offering shopping suggestions as well as welcoming special orders. One of my favorite places in town!
This place is great and a nice find in Portland -- love their yogurts and honey options (try the lavender honey). Their kombucha on tap is also great. As some of the reviews say, in general the produce here is more expensive but worth it for their local stuff and is not far off from Wholefoods prices anyway.
The Co-op is a place of solace and familiarity amidst the cold, slushy streets of mid-winter Portland. Excellent produce, bulk section, dairy case...try the soups! Its clear that the Co-op works hard to connect with local producers and carry their products. Theyre serious about sustainable, delicious food.
Best produce in Portland. Puts FarmersMarket to shame!
So proud to be part of this member-owned co-op. Shopping here is like visiting friends, and I love buying local.
Staff do not make you feel welcome. Seems like you are annoying them when you ask questions or otherwise need assistance. Especially if you are not a member
Pleasant staff. Nice selection of co-op type food
This Co-op had so many organic and locally sourced goods I couldnt believe it. This is a great organization and they have tons of great stuff! Im a fan of the fresh peanut butter.
Friendly people, local and organic food selection, good prices.
Good breakfast sandwichs and burritos but i hate when the wax paper sticks to the breakfast sandwich
The Portland Food Coop strives to be a place of community by supporting local vendors and farms in Maine and helping people see the need for healthy food. They also have a great dried goods bulk selection and work hard to find local produce even during the winter months. Also the money spent their stays in Maine and helps support the local economy!
Great food, and its awesome to buy local!!
Was visiting from out of town and stayed at the hostel down the street. it was nice to have a place to grab some food to prepare at the hostel, but I wish they had more prepared food options. I did get some really good beer, and a pad thai dish for the evening, and a few snacks for the conference/drive home. all in all, an ok co-op.
Lots of great items otherwise hard to find! Vegan jerky, chic pea flour, king trumpet mushrooms!! Local and organic!! Awesome place!
One of the coolest places to shop for fresh food.😊
So much awesomeness here. The soup is organic and made from scratch daily. Tons of local and organic produce and lots of gluten free options.
All of the best local / organic food products from Maine and beyond
Really unique local organic produce! Great place!
Hours and parking are convenient, only place I know to sell local food, at a reasonable price, offer package free selections. Glass bottled raw milk. Raw cheese.
Local treasures and super foods. Employees are the best, produce is diverse and local.I love the local grassfed Oxtail for stews 🐄
Fresh local food. Including produce, meats, baked goods, organic, gluten free, and items in bulk, such as honey, peanut butter and maple syrup. Friendly staff in a friendly, open environment. You dont have to be a member to shop, but you will want to be after a visit.
Good value, excellent variety and yummy ginger Turmeric tea that day!
I love the co-op!! I can bring my own containers to fill with bulk items. Would live to see more bulk, as well as meats and cheeses that arent pre-packaged. Great place for local food and goods and more sustainable consumer practices.
Too expensive, not a great selection. The bulk food options are nice but I wouldnt get anything else there.
As a member of the coop I know that any choice I make is going to be a good one. Love seeing a local business supporting local farmers, producers and brewers. If you havent been here yet you are missing out!!!
Carry great local products. Great gluten free pruducts!
Love having the Co-Op in town. A great alternative to national chain grocery stores. Extensive selection of local produce, including meat & dairy.
Great selection of local homemade foods and items. Love Kates Butter among hundreds of other local items, including maple syrup, wines, beers, preserves, etc.
I buy all my local organic produce, coffee, and frozen blueberries from Blue-ZeeFarm Penobscot, Maine. Many local dairy products and more! The staff is extremely personable and fun.I always love going to the PORTLAND FOOD CO - OP.♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Nice
Lots of local and organic options. Amazing staff!
Excellent local foods in a coop setting. Has food options that are hard to find outside of the farmers markets. The prices can be a bit higher than less local options.
Local business, local products. Bring your own containers for the maple syrup, spices and more!
For a co-op its way too expensive
