Coops are a great thing for communities to invest in and thing place is no exception. They have a lot of healthy alternatives. I got dalmas. Going vegetarian these days so it was a good choice for me. If you want to support this place please do so because it is totally cool and a great place to shop. They even have some prepared hot food to purchase. This day was a hot soup. I give it 5 stars. Oh prices are pretty reasonable.

They have a great selection of vegan products -- and their grab and go case has a wonderful selection of vegan to-go foods and beverages. Plus, I am also a member of Food Front Co-op, so I can receive 10% off my purchases one day per month -- during Member Days -- and I can also help to shape a conscious, thriving food economy that amplifies sustainable, healthy, and responsible food systems.

Id like to give it 4 stars, on account of how awesome the deli is. But, the place is just too expensive. And the cashiers can get a little lackadaisical and chatty, so this isnt the place for a hurried lunch purchase. Im also pretty miffed that they pulled the bulk vanilla extract (fiends!) a few years ago.

2nd trip to this Grocery after moving to the area. Tips for when you visit.1. Familiarize yourself with the bag policy. Reusable bags are not allowed. I did not search the Website before visiting and did not see a posted sign.2. Make sure the Deli Technician is not busy before asking for something from the counter.3. The Staff are better than you. Therefore, just your mere presence is caustic to them and you should be glad they even acknowledge your existence.4. Whole Foods prices are comparable, But the Staff at Whole Foods will not make you feel nearly as unwelcome5. Shop somewhere else.

Food Front is a wonderful grocery. Friendly and helpful and stocked with nutritious foods.

Update: I am pleased that my concern was addressed promptly when I got a phone call within a day by the head of the deli department. Original concern: Im a member but I must say I was disappointed in the customer service this past Sunday. Information provided to me over the phone was incorrect and I made a trip across the Columbia River for little to nothing.

Lovely little local coop. Selection is somewhat limited due to size, but you can probly get anything you need. And the produce and butcher sections are top notch. And the wines, too.

It where I do my weekly shopping. Why wouldnt I? Its a coop after all and you dont have second guess about the food quality or place of origin, and if the staff are treated well.

Clerk behavior consistently does not demonstrate care or value for customers. Skip this and shop at New Seasons on Raleigh. Or Peoples Co-op, Alberta Co-op, (or in Eugene, Olympia, or Seattle if youre on the road) if youd like a co-op. I shopped here for years because I support co-ops, but service in the last five years is the worst in Portland. Management would be well advised to change practice to demonstrate value and appreciation for customers, and teach staff skills to focus on customers and take interest in customers.

Fun little neighborhood supermarket with pretty much everything. And everything is organic or natural. Really good fresh meat/ fish counter. In general... just a pleasant vibe to shop in.

Friendly staff, clean environment, not as stressful as other places.

I have been coming to this store for a little over 3 years now. They are a tad spendy compared to other major chains, but is to be expected from buying smaller and more local. Pre-covid I mostly utilized their bulk section. Lots of great selections, and you can bring your own containers/jars to avoid the plastic. Staff is always friendly.

I called a few moments ago to ask if they had bags of hazelnut shells. A gentleman answered on what sounded like a speakerphone. Quickly Blurted “don’t have them” and hung up on me. I won’t be shopping at this place anytime soon. Wow.

A very nice store, good selection of foods and products, incl. produce, bulk, and cosmetics. Their deli looks good too, though I havent tried anything there yet. The atmosphere is the store good and pleasant. Its great that its a co-op too.

For such a small space, the grocers here do a great job. Parking is easy. Fast in and out. Nice ambiance to the whole place, inside and out. The deli is outstanding. Try one of their made-to-order sandwiches (my fave--pastrami). Seriously good.

Supporting local farmers, and independent businesses since 1972, this friendly landmark still provdes the best produce, seafood and meat department in town. A very friendly and helpful staff.The prices are the best for organic produce and wild caught seafood as well as organically raised beef, bison, lamb and pork.They will provide special orders and case discounts upon request. Bulk items are available and offer a great value.

We always shop here when we visit Portland and stay at the Silver Cloud hotel. The store is located in the highly walkable Nob Hill neighborhood, which is full of delightful shops and restaurants. Food Front has great produce, a whole wall of bulk food bins, a deli, a good wine selection and even ready-to-eat food for take-out.

Prices are steep, lines are long and customer service isnt so great most of the time. Decent selection for NW when it comes to natural and vegan foods.

I love this store! Great items and prices with an authentic neighborhood feel. The hot bar/salad bar is amazingly delicious and fresh, with interesting yet comfortable options. My only complaint is how early their hot bar closes, I think 7 PM on weekdays and 6 PM on weekends..

Theres something special about co-ops over the chain health food stores. Produce is more like shopping at farmers markets because its way fresher than NS/WF. Generally more extensive bulk selection, including bulk cleaning products. Smaller local company sourcing of things like eggs. Do majority of shopping here and then get a few extras at the other stores. Better place to invest via shopping

I have to laugh. When the Hillsdale Food Front was going out of business, I bought seven bags of interesting things from the bulk bins, but then I couldnt figure out what five of them were six weeks later. 😂 So, I called the Thurman store today and read them the bin numbers and they were kind enough to tell me what I had bought. I was so impressed with how nice the cashier was over the phone and how helpful he was.

I work near Food Front and for a TINY store it really packs a lot of whallop. I honestly love shopping here. Is it expensive, yup sure is, is it worth it HECK YES! Their produce is always super fresh once I bought mushrooms there that were so fresh they lasted a MONTH in my fridge (I forgot about them) when I pulled them out they werent even shriveled or anything, looked and smelled nice so I ate em. The meats are of superior quality and their salad and hot food bars are delicious. The story is easy to navigate and has a good selection of health and beauty products as well as bulk items. I look forward to receiving the collection of spice jars I ordered and going there to have them filled as theyll allow you to use outside containers for bulk products. My review is short 1 star only because the cashiers and building are a little worse for wear. Some of the cashiers are great but there are a few who really ride the line between apathetic and dismissive. Ive worked retail, I know its a grind and I let a LOT go when it comes to customer service but there are one or two cashiers here who always manage to make me feel like I interrupted their day with my need for groceries. Also the building could use a little work its not dirty or anything just worn and sometimes the scent of old building springs up which I dont mind in old houses but is unpleasant when mingled with grocery smells. But if you can push past an old building and the odd cashier who hates life youre golden and its a great place to shop!

Very neat environment. Beautiful Miral on the outside wall. They have a parking lot so you dont have to fight with Portland streets. The location is good. The people are friendly. The food is fresh in the wine selection is good. The prices are mediocre. I like the bulletin board out front and the community field. All around it seems like a nice place to do your shopping. I have been shopping at FF for about 5 years and love this place (the produce is beautiful, the meat counter folks are super helpful, Catherine in nonfoods is totally great, the store is always spotless) but make sure you get - and check - your receipt. The sale prices are not often entered into their system and I have been overcharged on numerous occasions. I am a member and support their mission so if I dont catch it, I shrug it off as a donation but this remains an ongoing issue.

Everybody get to turn here. Take a turn at your local co-op if there is no line go in and take a turn :-)

I really like this place. Although small, it usually seems to have what I need, and at prices that are often more reasonable than the much larger New Seasons down the road. If I lived closer to the place I would probably join it as a member.

Love their produce and bulk selection. Cant find papaya spears quite as good as the ones here.

Cool grocery owned by locals. Prices can be a bit steep, and selection can be a bit limited. But what you can get is high quality, and they use local vendors.

Bought what turned out to be a partly soggy sandwich.I really hope that for an $8 sandwich they would understand how the customers expectations would be a little higher.I dont hate Food Front for this. I just dont want to pay that kind of money for a sandwich only to throw away a slice of goopy bread and eat my, now, open face sandwich with a fork.

Just stopped in for some dinner with my toddler and it was awesome. All organic hot and salad bar, the baby is stuffed full of braised collard greens. Grabbed a local SOMA kombucha, friendly service and very comfortable eating area (i bet its gorgeous outside when the weathers nice. We couldnt be happier.

Needed a few things to bring home with me after a Nob Hill trip & was so delighted to find Food Front. They had just what I needed for the fresh, organic, meal I was planning without having to drive to a bigger store. Found a new favorite too...local Bull Run Cider...soooo good and I havent seen it elsewhere.

A bit pricey, but friendly & in walking distance. Great plants for sale outside. They have a little bit of everything, which makes them a great neighborhood market.

In what is already a forward thinking and organically minded neighborhood, Food Front manages to still stand out, and may be one of the better co-ops in the city. Carrying a great selection, and a good quality of produce, it would be hard to walk out of here without a full cart of goodies. Great customer service makes this a rewarding experience, and a recommended local establishment.

Hey, I have been a loyal customer for 40 years. They have had their ups and downs with management, thats over now, but their quality and service has never suffered. If you are tired of New Seasons, and I am, go local.

A really amazing store. All the products are organic, and not found everywhere else. Do you remember whether watermelon used to look like? Before it was round or tiny? Yeah,they were 3 feet long, And shape like a kidney bean. It weighed about 40 pounds. This store has vegetables as they were before the food machine changed them Into highly profitable overpriced monstrosities of the vegetable world.

Awesome neighborhood store with staff that range from incredibly helpful to unbelievably arrogant. Its a co-op - the store is there to serve the members (owners first, the community and suppliers (i.e. farmers) next, and then the employees). When I asked about them carrying soda I was met with outrage by one employee who tried to tell me co-ops dont do that.Hey jackass, co-op doesnt equal no soda. Co-op means serving the owners, not letting the employees decide what the owners want. So many great people in this store with a wonderful history. A few employees are making it unpleasant.Employees are delving into politics as well, partnering up with a local rag newspaper to vent their anger. Every general manager at Food Front sucks. The board is all made of of idiots and a-hole. And the paper is right there to share their views. The board ARE the members - its that simple.Too many employees seem to want this to be, or already believe it is, and employee owned store. Its not. Please stop tell the owners/members what kind of store we want.Three years ago I would have given this 5 starts. Now down to 3 just based on employee attitudes.

Impressed with their selection of bulk items, everything from neem to cacao to nuts and seeds, recommend bringing your own container. Their staff is helpful and they even sell raw goat milk if you get there on the right day.

$8 for 6 oz of moldy blueberries is outrageous. EVERYTHING is the store is WAY over priced. Plus, the checkers were very arrogant and aloof, not friendly at all. With all the great stores in Portland I suspect its the locals keeping this place going. What a shame really. Apparently the area needs a grocery store. Still, with prices so high it was no wonder the store was deserted at 5pm on a weekday. We WONT be going back either.

Meh...EXPENSIVE, unfriendly. Not too impressed really. Nice that they have a deli, even though most items are empty soon after supper. Good for a quick dash. If you do catch hot items, usually dry and overcooked.

Helpful staff, but there is a bad vibe about that store. If you are an owner, you need to be aware that this small business has operating losses over the last few years amounting to over $1.1 Million, currently is servicing more debt than it can handle, and has severe cash flow problems. Yet, the Board of Directors does not demand accountability of the GM, because she controls and manipulates the members of the Board. In fact Food Front is not being operated as a cooperative, but more like a dictatorship headed by the General Manager. I encourage all owners demand that the board and general manager be forced to resign and that the owners meet and elect a board in a democratic fashion.I also encourage all owners to rally, and develop a strategy to oust all current board members, elect a new board and immediately terminate the general manager, director of marketing and HR manager, and implement a plan to regain financial stability of the business.

We love this coop. We swing by here when we need some midweek groceries. While New Seasons is our main stop, this is a good secondary for us.
