The hotcake house is hands down the best breakfast place in Portland. Old school diner vibes with focus on making amazing food. Portions are HUGE and food is amazing. The service is great and we have never left this place hungry! Would highly recommend the 2 egg breakfast special! Big enough to share with the person you love!!
I really Enjoy my food here, it was very tasty 😋The service has room to improve,Overall good.
The best omelet in town (meat) and the hotcakes with blueberries are so good. Takeout is always packaged very well. Food is made to order and delicious
What a great place! I wish you could smell how good this food is! Also, the guys on the grill are fun to watch. They really know what they are doing!
Great value with large servings and friendly service. The menu selection is also really big considering they do breakfast foods. Parking can be a pain if they are busy if you mind parking on the street.
The food was phenomenal. Hot fresh and made to order. Serving size is larger than most, and definitely a comfort food spot. Service was fast and delicious.
Classic to clog your arteries in the best way, just like it should.
Thank you very much for your amazing hospitality. We were sat and greeted with care, and had a wonderful Sunday brunch. Staff is welcoming. Large portions, great taste, and a fun atmosphere for friends and families. We were able to play music on the Jukebox and enjoy some quality family time. Thank you so much!
Got two hotcakes. Cheap food, nice people. The hotcakes themselves are the platonic ideal of diner pancakes, fluffy and dense at the same time, very big and served very hot.
The perfect “greasy spoon” restaurant!I’ve gone here for years. The ultimate cheeseburger with fries is a huge meal to die for. Their pancakes are massive and delicious. I have enjoyed every meal I’ve had here.
Excellent meat lovers omlette and hash browns, but the hash browns were ruined by cheap watery ketchup. Scrambled eggs ordered HARD SCRAMBLED were soft and under-cooked. Theyve done better in years past. First time there in years and I feel the finer touches of a simple breakfast may have slipped out of grasp.
The hotcakes were exactly as they should be, superb. The biscuits and gravy, not so much.
We stayed at Kennedy school and after an overpriced sub par dinner that has definitely gone down in quality recently we weren’t going to chance a bad breakfast. HOTCAKE house did not disappoint! Excellent as it’s always been. Thanks goodness some places in pdx haven’t changed for the worse!
Was not good at all. Left more than half my plate because I was too grossed out to eat the rest. I usually dont waste time leaving reviews but I feel like this one had to be done. The steak was a hamburger patty.
Takeout for waffles and omelet. Omelet flavor was good. Waffles were thin like hotcakes but double the price. I requested for the sauces on the side but didnt happen so no hot sauce with omelet. Also takeout order didnt include utensils(we were traveling). 3 orders with 3 forks and set of napkins wouldve been nice.
We ordered two omelets and pancakes. The eggs and bacon were completely overcooked, while the shredded cheese in the inside was not melted at all. The pancakes were large and decent, but we decided to leave early anyways because we did not trust the food quality and sanitation. This place had 2 homeless people in it loaded up with bags on the table in the corner of the restaurant, the bathrooms were gross and had graffiti all over it, the tables were messy(1230PM).Whats more embarrassing is the pricing is still consistent with more reputable breakfast chains.
This is the best place if you want a delicious huge platter of food fast and cheap. Absolutely no frills and very friendly servers. There is a huge selection of food and something for everyone. As can be guessed, the portions are huge and combos are well created, really hitting the spot. I ordered a veggie omelette which was large and delicious, and it came with 2 mega hot cakes, I was blown away by the taste and portions. The omelette tasted really fine, with very fresh ingredients, and it was late at night. Large option of beverages too. I am definitely going back here when I want to stuff my face with delicious food in a clean, no-nonsense place.
I love the vintage appeal of this place. Stepped in and had a massive portion of bacon, eggs and the fluffiest pancakes I’ve ever had. I can come here at 5 am or 5 pm, can never go wrong!
Had the Mexican omelette. Was good and so were the hash browns. I would have liked a side of avocado or salsa I think but otherwise tasty. Decent coffee and fast service.
Biscuits and gravy not very good quality. Gravy tasted like ranch or like it was about to turn. Ordered french dip and recieved a philly cheese steak, and something black was floating in our orange juice.
The original Portland greasy spoon. You cant say youve been to Portland until youve been here. Generous helpings and good prices. Amazing gravy. Bring your blood thinners.
Food was way over priced. I got the cheapest thing I seen on the menu which was french toast (3 slices of bread)for $6.95 that was the only reasonably priced item on the menu everything else was $10+ most items around $11-$13. It was just okay the really disappointing part was when I found a small spot of mold on one of my French toast slices, which I immediately stopped eating it ruined my appetite and I was planning on returning to show them and see what they could possibly do to fix the problem either refund or replace my meal but life happens and I got busy and was unable to return so I just dont know if they would have handled the situation. I probably wont be back for a second meal.
A classic Portland restaurant- great food, great service, and (in non-Covid times) open 24/7. Gotta love it. Their patty melt is delicious, so are the biscuits and gravy!
Ate in for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised at how tasty my vegetable omelette was. The portions are HUGE and very affordable... share your plate!
Weve been going to this place for years and it has always been good. Last night was the first time in a year that we had been there due to the pandemic. Theyve had to change how they take orders and the seating, but its all done very well. The food was as fantastic as it has always been and we look forward to more visits.
06/08/19: 4.5 out of 5 - Ive came here so many times in the past, and quite surprised I havent done a review for Original Hotcake House. Well, this time I came to the Original Hotcake House with my wife, sister-in-law and her daughter after attending the Cleveland Park High School holiday concert. The restaurant is quaint, cozy, and very clean with a wonderful glow about it. The staff were amazingly attentive without being intrusive. The one thing that drew me to this place was that its been around for a very long time... and that it is open 24 hours. The food was made to order and came out the way it is meant to be served. And, its big servings with being priced well. I have to mention the pancakes... theyre delicious! Big and fluffy pancakes. Absolutely just amazing! As a side note for the drink, good coffee and the soda has good carbonation, but no refills unless you buy the large and then you can get one refill.Depending on the party of people eating there, I can get a little loud to have conversation. However, its a restaurant, they tend to get that way when people are with good friends and family. If ever in the neighborhood or looking for good, if not great, 24 hour eatery, then Id suggest checking Original Hotcake House. As I always say, try it out once and decide for yourself.Enjoy!
Greasy and limited choices on omelets fillings. We made substitutions on the fillings and the prices charged werent reasonable for the lack of quantity and quality of ingredients. I will say the pancakes were okay. Not great but okay. We will not be returning.
Hot cake house is an iconic Portland eatery, Ive been coming here for the last 18 years of living in Portland and has never failed to disappoint. The pancakes are great, eggs are great, hash browns are great, everything is going to taste exactly like it should and the staff here are amazing.
Food is expensive but I got three pieces of french toast for $7(that was the cheapest thing on the menu). On one of my pieces of bread there was a small spot of mold on it. My friend ordered same and it was fine and it tasted good.
A place around the corner was extremely busy with limited seating so we ended up here for breakfast! Service was quick, friendly and the portions were massive.Ordered the biscuits and gravy ... semi lackluster (ask for hot sauce).Pancakes were the size of my entire plate, and the best Ive had in a while. Exactly what you want from a pancake house!A little old diner-esk place that Id go to again.
Its an order first, then sit down place. You have to get your own coffee, too. Food was good, though.
The absolute best place for giant pancakes!😁 Tip well- these people deserve it!
Love the place, we were visiting from CA, and was out breakfast for years in Or back in time
It is absolutely amazing. The food there taste wonderful the guys that work there are very nice and polite.
If youre really hungry this is a great place to go.. One meal will feed at least two very hungry people :)
Been around forever and the building and upkeep shows that, but rather good food and decent prices!
My fave place to eat 24/7 service is always so friendly and amazing
Professional people ...amazing 1 plate you can make for two peoples. Wawwwww
Original Hotcake House can be a little tough to get to since the road it is on has some barriers and one ways behind it, but it is totally worth coming here. They serve huge portions for a very good price, and their food is delicious. Their pancakes are super filling, so dont go overboard, but you need to get hashbrowns because they are made fresh and are great. Service is good, the food comes out pretty quickly even though its made to order.
Great food, great service and reasonable prices! I loved going to this place in the 80s and so happy that they still have this place still! The food is made to order right there in front of you....fresh and hot tasty food. This is a must stop for anyone that is going thru portland.
The only place for hungover breckie or just the best breakfast in general! Its a must in Portland
Good portions for the cost...pancakesare SO good. Not the cleanest or most posh but thats really not the point
It’s 3am you must be lonely! Go here for great food and a show or go be part of the show. Highly recommend
Good food. Good service
Huge delicious breakfast. Good, real food made to order. Funky and friendly. Felt at home. Once you try you will want to go back.
This place said they closed at 11pm and we got there a little after 10pm. Dude said they were not open for dine in but take out only. False advertising and rude customer service. We had 8 people and a baby come and be turned away because of what ever reasoning this dude had.
Fluffy pancakes, thick hash browns, classic diner atmosphere, very consistent food and service. What more do you want?
This was such a great place to eat! So clean and the staff are so polite! The plates are huge! I’d recommend it!!
Back safely post Covid. Stopped the line for now. Distanced table service or takeout. Perfect mushroom burgers, onionn rings and the hot cakes you love.
Cooked from scratch and large portions for a decent price. One of my favorite places to eat!
Everything we want from a diner. Hotcakes and sausage patties were excellent. Wish they were in new york.
Love the old school Moms and Pops Cafes
Usually dine in, first time getting to go - great service. The food is fantastic! The sausage gravy, the pancakes, the hash.....its all delicious!
Food was delicious. Confusing system for ordering and requesting condiments
Honest to good ol diner comfort food. True chicken fried steak made the real way. No frozen pucks slathered in gravy. Real hashbrowns as well.
Been wanting to go here for over 20 years and finally did. Its not close to me but I was in the area Saturday morning and am glad I finally stopped.Great food, quick service, portions were big.
Down home vibe and great food!
Gyro omelette was amazing! I Love this place. The service was a bit forgetful but the Juke box did make up for the oversights!💜☺️
Classic Greasy Diner. Best patronized in the wee hours of the morning after a long night of wild debauchery. Dont come for the wine and steaks - come for the enormous plate of biscuits and gravy that tastes amazing and leaves you feeling disgusted with yourself halfway through. Come for the fluffy pancakes that fill you up faster than a fire hose in a kiddie pool. Its a grill whos grease hasnt gone rancid - but only because it hasnt been turned off since sometime in the 1960s. If you order anything but the breakfast, you take your life into your own hands - but if youre coming here you knew that already.
Pretty good food, it is kind of a hole in wall place. The pancakes were really good.
Huge portions, hugely disappointing service. We ordered, she brought the check and had us pay (including tip??), and THEN they brought our food. Never saw the server again. My wife’s order wasn’t correct but absolutely no way to remedy it. And why should they? They had our money—what were we going to do about it? Won’t be back
Still a Portland staple, dont miss the crowded line, reasonable covid measure, solid food, big portions if you get the pancakes, Specials are solid and you can get cornbeef hash as a meat for most plates which is a big plus for me. Juice is overpriced, just stick with water or coffee.
Last time I went here with friends, pre-covid, I was told I wasnt able to sit down at a table while my friends ordered food. But some other people after me were? Employee wasnt pleasant about it either when I pointed out the hyprocrisy.
We did not have a great experience. The food was ok, but the service was not great. It took us 1 and a half hours to get breakfast. People who were seated 30 minutes after us got their food before us. We wont be going back.
The best pancake batter in the world, I dont know what their secret is but if I had to guess I would guess they put whipped cream in the batter, thats just my guess.
The best hotcakes on the planet. Been going here since 1972. Dont live in the area anymore but when in town I love their pancakes!
Great experience. Its a nice clean place to eat at. The cook is excellent and service is too. The food is GREAT....... Thank you!!!!
Chicken Fried steak; steak and eggs, and I got pancakesFood: The pancakes werent cooked all the way. The chicken fried steak was unfortunately one of the worst Ive had, I always get the chicken fried steak from new breakfast places. It looked like a burnt piece of ground beef all the way thro, the gravy could use more love it wasnt the best either.Service: They had us pay before the food came out and I understand why, because after you get your food the service staff ignores you. I waited for a box for 15 mins and just decided to leave it because it wasnt really good enough to take.In total, portion sizes are small, quality is horrible, and staff needs training. This was after a rush.
