This cute basement dessert bar has a smaller menu but each item is made from pure heaven. There are no words to describe the mouth feel of this chocolate caramel torte. It was light, smooth, overwhelming with flavor and it melted shortly after hitting your tongue. I am visiting Portland for its charm. Im coming back for this dessert.

Very, very good. We went on a great night and got outdoor seating. Our waitstaff was very nice and professional, and made it a fun experience - this place is one of the only places in Portland you can order a flight of desserts to try! They were all so good we were sad to go (and sad to be full). Will definitely visit again!

I am obsessed with this place! Gross being in the name is too funny because yes, they mix so many wacky flavors together that are so innovative and interesting! Sure, the corn flavored gelato was not my favorite but we were giggling the whole time regardless! I miss this place being open super late but maybe it will get back to that someday. Wonderful atmosphere and delicious & inventive food that keep us coming back for different experiences every time.

If I gave this place anything less than five stars, Id probably be single. The boyfriend wouldnt stop talking about this place, and understandably so. Im not a big dessert person, but I definitely enjoyed it, and theres not a thing I could criticize. The prices for what you get were reasonable, the service was good, and the desserts were creative. In fact, we went back in the morning to the bakery, which was also great. I think this might have tipped the scales to the boyfriend wanting to move to Portland. Hopefully theyre hiring . . .

So when you are walking past a place called gross that does desserts and drinks you have questions. Dont question anything. Go there, sit down, get a drink. Then eat the best dessert you have ever had that looks more like an art peice. The dessert was amazing Im sad I only got one. The host and sever were extremely friendly. The location is also very convenient of you just want an after dinner drink and dessert option. 15/10 would go again.

This place is TOP NOTCH. Gross Confection Bar is a single location restaurant located in the heart of Downtown Portland, Maine. They serve high-end deserts and cocktails in a laid back atmosphere with friendly and knowledgeable servers helping you along the way. This place is everything but gross which I believe is the whole point of their name but it was an absolutely fantastic way to end the night. They have indoor and outdoor seating and allow dogs outside. The inside seating is all brick and underground with a bar which is pretty cool. The desserts are complex, high quality, some are deconstructed and some are just magic. Coming from a culinary background, I can see the effort that this place is making at it certainly pays off in flavor. If youre looking for a sweet after dinner, this is the place to try out.My wife and I shared The Tasting Board which had five different desserts on one large plate. We thought the desserts were going to be one or two bites each but they were a bit bigger than we were expecting which was okay with us!The first dessert was Cherries, Chocolate and Coffee which included, a brownie, triple chocolate pudding, chocolate micro-cake, cherry jam, cocoa nib nougatine and coffee creameux. The second was Maine Strawberry Profiterole which had Maine Strawberry compote, amaretto cream, almond-orange florentine, raspberry coulis, and white chocolate lime crumb. The third was Citrus Goat Cheese Cake which consisted of, citrus curd, candied kumquats, orange powder, and white chocolate pearls. The fourth, a Vanilla Buttermilk Panna Cotta. It had, pistachio financier, yuzu gel, roasted strawberries, and coconut crunch.Lastly, the Brown Butter Carrot Cake. This dessert had, rice crack, espresso tuile, tonka bean creme anglaise, and apricot vanilla jam.My favorite was the Maine Strawberry Profiterole and the wifes was the Vanilla Buttermilk Panna Cotta. Its hard to even describe the flavor anything short of AMAZING. The complexity and care that goes into these desserts is insane and I would totally love to stage here if I lived in Portland haha. Our least favorite out of the five was the Citrus Goat Cheese Cake. It was too sour and tart for us. My first bite literally made me pucker and I felt as though I was eating a Warhead. It got better as I ate more of it but overall was just too sour and was hard to enjoy. But considering how it was a tasting plate Im not going to give any less stars because the rest of the desserts pulled through. If I had just gotten that by itself though I would have sent it back for something else. Also, the server went over the menu but only to tell us that The Taste was smaller dessert portions and The Set List was bigger portions. I would have liked to her what they are about and what her favorite dessert and drink was without having to ask. It adds to the experience to be walked through the menu as a customer whos never been there before.Food - 5 ⭐Atmosphere - 5 ⭐Service - 4.5 ⭐Overall - 5 ⭐Follow me for more reviews across America 😎🍔🍕🍨🍦🦖🔧Like this review if you found it helpful! 👍

Most importantly, the service at this establishment was outstanding. So hard to find top notch service these days, and our waitress was on point. Passionate about her job and beyond knowledgeable about the menu. The coconut macaroon with passion fruit and apricot is one of the best desserts I’ve ever consumed. Just mind blowing. We also ordered the Camus Profiterole, which slapped hard as well. Can’t wait to make it back to explore more of the menu. Bourbon cocktail was also on point!

They recently changed the menu so most of the desserts shown in the previous pictures are not available anymore, however they have similar plates. I came to this place with high expectations and they fell short. The service was below average. My water was never refilled, the server could not explained the plates properly and did not even know if you could make adjustments to the plate. The desserts looked good but were less of what I expected specially for the price of them. Some of the confections even lacked some presentation. However, they are not all bad, if you really like peanut butter their dessert is pretty good but it have a lot of the PB flavor. The place looked really good so the atmosphere was good.

Relaxing and chic atmosphere with friendly service. An excellent place for an uncommon dessert experience. Prices are definitely on the expensive side but the attention to detail and balance of sweetness and unique flavor combinations make a visit worth it if you can afford it (expect to pay anywhere from $8-18 for a single portion). Menu has plenty of options to choose from and has everything from fruity/tart to chocolate and everything in between. Drinks were great and even included mocktails and quality coffee drinks.Keep in mind you will be paying for the experience here, so if you’re just looking for a sugar rush this might not be the place. I could easily have eaten the entire super moist chocolate cake to myself even though it is listed as “for two”, but maybe that’s just a testament to the quality! Be sure to bring someone with you for the full experience because there are a lot of items designed for sharing with two or more people, unless you are ready to shell out $20-30 to have one all to yourself.

Wow! The bartender was fun, welcoming, knowledgeable, and makes amazing drinks! The desserts are not only ridiculously tasty but the presentation is phenomenal, the flavor combinations are inventive and expertly crafted! The jasmine rice is the perfect combination of sweet and savory, the butterscotch amaro pots de creme might just have the best texture in the world, and the peanut butter jelly thyme evokes the nostalgia of childhood while also tasting very refined. Absolutely incredible! A must try!

We came to this dessert bar after Solo Italiano. I was really craving for brown butter something, so I voted for the panna cotta. Im not entirely sure what we got, but it definitely isnt panna cotta. The goat cheese cheesecake wasnt a cheesecake either, more like a smear of cheese cream, but it was quite yummy.1. Maine Goat Cheese Cheesecake (poached figs, candied almonds, almond crust, vin cotto)2. Brown Butter Panna Cotta (pineapple, jasmine, rice crock, rum, yuzu, lime)

Fantastic tucked away space with a great vibe. Desserts are a unique take on many dishes with a combination of flavors not traditional of many dishes. Presentation is just as impressive as the taste. The addition of peppercorns (and some other inedible seeds) to the beverage is not well thought out. They just make it difficult to drink. The more I drank, the more frustrated I became, and finally ended up returning the offending drink. The music was heavy metal which we found distracting. I just did a quick Google search and found that maybe 38% of people like heavy metal. I think playing something more universally acceptable would allow more patrons to feel more comfortable. The deserts were interesting. But I couldnt help feeling as though the creator of them was being self-indulgent of their creativity and more focused crafting unique/weird items rather than delicious and desirable items. The two of us spent $80, tried lots of different stuff, and didnt have anything that would inspire us to come back again. And finally, lots of the deserts were served on wooden planks. Even some ice cream was served on wood. We find wood to be a terrible surface to eat off of. The ice cream soaks into the wood, the marshmallow sticks to wood, and with wood being porous, it doesnt feel as though it can be thoroughly clean. The plating again made me feel as though the creator of the dishes was more focused on form over function.

I know its supposed to be a high end, expensive type dessert experience - but the minuscule amount of dessert was almost insulting. Also, we were promptly ignored for 5-6 minutes. The drinks we had tasted okay, but didnt seem well thought out - the whole peppercorns added nothing to the gin and tonic accept an annoyance as I had to try to drink around them. The flavor of the food was amazing. If youre looking to impress your high school or college girlfriend this is the place to go.

It feels like the start of something new that may take time to become better. I like that its open late despite a long wait to be seated. They dont serve decaf espresso drinks and dont have a milk substitute because there is no space for that in the kitchen feels like its running on a tight budget. I wasnt impressed but would try again in a year to see if they have nailed down their vision.

Most friendly, personable, and informative server weve had all trip. He gave us a brief but helpful run down of the menu, was great to chat with (I think my boyfriend talked his ear off) and makes great drinks!! He definitely sealed the deal on our love of Gross. As far as what we ate... Well Ive never spent $100 on dessert before and it was well worth it.
