We used Helen Bernhard for our wedding cakes! The cakes were stunning and exactly what we asked for. We loved the bakery because the cake flavors were simple and delicious, they had a ton of variety, and the frosting is the perfect amount of sweetness. The main cake is decorated to resemble henna and the grooms cake is Manchester United themed. Thank you so much for the wonderful cakes!

While waiting for our table at the Cadillac Cafe, we wandered down the street and stumbled on this cute little bakery! We grabbed a couple frosted sugar cookies for the road, which were soft and chewy and delicious! We even scored a free sugar cookie for checking in on Yelp! Double bonus!Everything in the case looked amazing, so I can see us coming back for more goodies in the future! Everyone was polite, helpful and friendly. Great place, will be back!

Came here on a Sunday morning to take advantage of the lower priced items. The bakery is in a great location with large front-facing windows that let in a glorious amount of morning sunlight. Parking is super easy, there are two lots on either side of the bakery as well as street parking. The bakery has a fantastic array of options, from breads to cookies, doughnuts, cakes, and more. The staff were helpful and quick, keeping the line moving while following good social distance practices. We grabbed a half price cake, blueberry doughnut, and drip coffee. Great price for good quality food. We’d recommend this as a one stop shop to satisfy almost everyone in the group, they were well stocked too. Not sure how well those with various dietary requirements would fare here but it’s a bakery- those with gluten, dairy, nut (etc) allergies won’t be surprised to be faced with slim pickings (such is our load to bare). We visited early in the morning, we’ve been alerted that options are slimmer following 10am on Sunday when the local church let’s out.

Talk about amazing. We were thrilled to have our custom cake turn out so great and the staff did such a lovely job on it. Not to mention they were able to complete it in such short notice (less than 24 hrs). This was the talk of the party, and everyone was impressed with such attention to detail. Thank you for recommending the pink champagne with raspberry filing, it was so delightful.

THE BEST CAKE EVER!!!!Where to begin..This was my first time purchasing from HBB. Part of the reason I wanted to work with them is because they support The Blanchet House and have donated baked treats for people in need. I called them up a week before and got info on what was needed. I then emailed them with a ton of details (photo examples, a list of prioritized options, a photo from their site) while also noting that I wanted the decorator to have artistic and creative freedom. HBB called me back a couple days later with an estimate and I gave them the OK. I picked up the cake this morning and couldnt have been happier. The recipient was just as thrilled. Chacha, the decorator, did such an amazing job. Thanks Chacha and HBB, cant wait to make another.

I can’t express how disappointed I am that a cake that was $10.95 last week has gone up to $29.95 when I went to order it this week! I’ve been going to this bakery for many many years.... you’ve just lost a very good customer! An update to this post Mike the owner called to explain the drastic change in price! I understand the price going up but $9.30 is extreme I do appreciate the call though but won’t be paying that price!!

Terrific bakery! Fresh natural and correct recipes for all the classics. Weve had wonderful results with custom cakes and special breads like light rye with caraway and dark rye. Magnificent!

I ordered the real Black Forest cake and it was as amazing and scrumptious as anyone could want or hope! Even the prices for such quality are quite reasonable and worth every penny! Can NOT say enough good things about the cake it was so good! Since I am deaf it is very hard to find places that will take online orders, although it is getting easier, and I was so happy to find out this bakery takes email orders. I will be getting my cakes and such from Helens from now on! Easy access, great baked goods, clean shop, decent/fair prices and really nice service with a smile! What more do/could you want?!?!

Rock solid, have all the standard donuts and a lot of other ones Id never seen before. Dont expect Coco trendy or Blue Star strange, or VoodDoo (not sure what to call them). These are the classic donuts of the American Century and they never disappoint. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Graduations, last minute relatives, Bernhard is always the go-to bakery!

Helen Bernhardt Bakery has wonderful Eclairs! Light and fluffy, with lots of filling. Some of the best I have had.We also ordered a cake for a friend’s birthday.It was awesome. It was a chocolate cake with mint filling and mint frosting. Very moist and flavorful. I was impressed.All of their baked goods look great, I can’t wait to try more of them.

Great old time bakery. The pecan pie cookies (and the pecan pie itself) are both exceptional. The eclairs too. Never had a bad item, really. Go to this place, and buy cake and pie and whatnot. Then go home, and eat them.A+ number 1

I was coming in from out of state to visit my son. His girlfriends birthday was going to be during our stay and I wanted to order a special Monsters Inc cake. I sent them a picture of the cake and Helen Bernard Bakery came through and made the cake identical to the picture sent. Red velvet cake with raspberry filling and frosting that was very light! I dont live in Portland but wanted to recognize great food and service while I was here. Its so important to give reviews to help businesses out during these trying times. When I come back to Portland I will definitely reach out again to Helen Bernard Bakery for my orders.

No masks worn by employees. They expect you to protect them, but not the other way around. Also experienced poor service. This was a disappointing visit. Maybe things will improve next time.

Oh man, where do I start? This is by far the most beautiful and yummy yule log Ive seen! Everything from the cupcakes to the lemon bars are out of this world.

Over the years, I have come to expect high quality and standards from Helen Bernhard Bakery. Today, I was sadly disappointed. The cake sponge was sandy in texture and had no flavor at all. The frosting while beautiful and creamy also lacked in the flavor department. The star of the cake was the filling! It was absolutely out of this world and it totally elevated the cake that surrounded it.

Their cookies are AMAZING. They put them in white waxed paper bags which will keep as long as you have cookies and the cookies taste the same as the day you bought them.They also have these wonderful savory fogasa rolls, that have green onions and cheese. YUMEverything is made with care and love and every bite is evidence of that.

Dropped by about an hour before closing to pick up a cake for a birthday. There were several cakes to chose from, making it hard to decide which one sounded the best. I ended up with the strawberry pink champagne. The birthday boy approved and we very much enjoyed the cake!I also picked up a beautiful loaf of marbled rye. They had several breads available...and so much more. Ill be going back for donuts, muffins and cookies in the future!

We got our parents 50th Anniversary cake from Helens. It was beautiful and delicious! Each tier was a different flavor. Amazing! The employees where professional and everything from the tasting to delivery went perfectly.

Started going here for their delicious cinnamon rolls. Went there for a birthday that was one of the best cakes Ive ever had.

Definitely not my taste. I went there and got some cake which was beverage. It tastes okay, not really fantastic. They don’t really have price labels. I mean some of them do while the 3/4 of them don’t. That makes me uncomfortable asking for the price. Only feel thankful that’s not too sweet like other bakeries.

Ordered online with frustrating results. Firstly, I paid for a dozen specialty donuts and over half were cake donuts (not a big fan and are significantly cheaper than the specialty donuts), and a couple others were plain raised donuts. When a customer is paying almost double the price for specialty donuts, this is just inexcusable. As for the donuts themselves, they were good, nothing remarkable, but beats store bought. I also ordered cookies which were disappointingly small and tasted slightly off. Lastly, the cake I ordered was okay, but the cherries were inedible (I think they are candied, but the flavor was immensely sweet and not pleasant). In all, I wont be a repeat customer, and this review isnt to say that the food was bad per say, but at this price point, I expect better.

I love this place hands down, but I would not recommend the slices of cake, they were kinda dry compared to when buying a whole cake. Also because I asked for pink champagne and got white cake because the frosting looked the same. Lets just say I was upset to have to throw it away. I will say they have THEEEE BEST apple turnovers I have ever had! The apple fritters are amazing too!

I am almost 56 and my mom always got my cake from there, now that she is gone my oldest daughter does her best to get me one for my birthday.

They really need a dedicated line monitor here to enforce social distancing. It was not being adhered to at all when I went, and the staff seemed stressed out trying to enforce it while doing their normal job.

The cakes here are amazing! We got our wedding cake here in 2011 and they are still our go-to for cakes for special occasions (or just because I want cake).They also have excellent curbside/contactless pick-up for the pandemic. Just pay on the phone and they will bring the cake out to the parking lot and put it directly in your trunk.

My Sister in law purchased a $60 Black forest cake on November 5th. Everyone was so excited and expectations were high. The cake did look very nice, however this was hardly a black forest cake. The cake itself was very dry hardly characteristic of a black forest and there was so little filling that you could barely tell there was any filling at all. I could have done better with a box of Betty Crocker. When you purchase from a a bakery that has a good reputation you expect more, not a nicely decorated Safeway special

Cakes are beautiful to look at but the cake I bought was dry on the inside and you could taste the shortening in the frosting. For the price and how long the bakery has been in business I expected more. I have definitely tasted way better cakes from a home baker. The macarons were good but I had never had them before so I have nothing to compare them to.

Went in, was out in less than 5 minutes box in hand.I really like that they have premade boxes, was grabbing a box for a meeting and the variety + speed was greatly noticed.Nice donuts, tasted nice, I personally had a chocolate bar out of the box and it was pretty good, had that ever so slight crisp outer layer biting into a sweet soft inside. The other people raiding the box said good things as well.The only downer would be parking, but thats about the only thing stopping a perfect score. I was very satisfied and I plan to go back.
