Finding my wedding dress with Linda and the English Dept team was so much fun! Their shop feels like a secret hideaway off of Clinton full of beautiful dresses and accessories. Linda did a great job pulling dresses similar to my initial plan, but also encouraging me to try on different styles as well, all within my budget. She would provide a kind opinion when needed, but also stepped back and let me take my time making a decision.Getting alterations done with Erin was a simple and seamless (haha) process! She makes you feel so comfortable, even in potentially awkward situations, and will listen and acknowledge all of your questions and concerns. Erin had to reschedule once, but was flexible in finding a new time. The shop also specializes in vintage dresses which was perfect given I wore my great-grandmother’s wedding dress as my going away dress. The dress had a couple small tears, but Erin was able work her magic and repair the dress and no one would know the tears were ever there! Thank you Erin, Linda, and the English Dept for helping me find my dress and making sure it fit perfectly!Photo credit: Olivia Strohm Photography (photo 1)

I had such a wonderful experience here the whole way through. The space is seriously gorgeous- this was the first place I stopped while looking for a wedding dress and I found it pretty much immediately (I think it was the 3rd dress I tried on). The sales gal had picked it out for me after I told her a little bit about my style and what I was looking for. It was such a dream scenario for finding your wedding dress- super romantic, beautiful setting and they even gave me champagne and let us hang out for a bit. I also had my alterations done by Erin who is the seamstress for the shop and she was great. I had a blast meeting up with her and getting the dress just right. Couldnt have asked for a better situation and I would do it all again!

I went to the English Dept for my wedding dress in March for my wedding in September. During those six months, I had several exceptional experiences with the staff as I went through the alterations process. The service I had when I made my first appointment was incredible; I was treated exactly like I wanted - like a bride! They make you feel so special, from champagne, to one on one service from their expert staff. The dress I chose was a floor model, so it didnt need to be ordered, which was great. They held the dress for me at the shop until alterations were complete, which was so helpful. They recommend their seamstress, Erin, for my alterations, and she was so great. She was honest, had great ideas, and listened to my wants/needs. When I picked up the dress for the last time, I was again given champagne to celebrate. It really seems like the staff there are all in the right roles; theyre enthusiastic and genuinely excited about what they do. Great experience!

Listen. This place is magical. It is exactly what you picture when thinking about wedding dress shopping. A beautiful, intimate space. A variety of dresses, but they are all timeless. They feature local, talented designers...so if you are picky about what you want they can help you find and customize an option. Kind and incredibly patient staff. I will send all my engaged friends here first. Im just sad after Im married I cant go back there on a regular basis. A true unique and special gem in the wedding world.

The best wedding dress shop in Portland. After looking at many other places, The English Dept. was by far my favorite. My experience was perfect: the shop is stunning, the staff are knowledgeable and caring without being overbearing, and the dresses are unbelievable. After purchasing my dress, I was provided personalized suggestions and help with everything from specialized alterations to the perfect earrings to go with my dress. I have since recommended this store to three other brides, and all three ultimately found their dresses at The English Dept. after looking at many other stores prior. Skip the others and come here.

What a special place! The dresses they carry are independent women designers, which is really cool and special. They made my appointment super fun and made me feel beautiful and celebrated! I like how they have display dresses available for purchase, I was able to get both my bridal gown and my sisters maid of honor gown for under $900.

Pretty limited selection. Mostly strapless. Fairly expensive compared to other venues we visited. Not a great, welcoming vibe -- up a steep staircase after you are buzzed in (dont be a few early - you are asked to chill on the street in the rain). Want champagne to celebrate? That is $2. Not very classy.

This review is based on a few factors. The English Department itself was timely and communicative and a nice place to visit while I dress shopped and received alterations. That being said, I had a challenging experience with the seamstress. I get very frustrated just thinking about it. Her name is Erin. I haven’t been able to track down her last name, but Erin provided a mixture of services. At times I felt supported and so happy to work with her, and others incredibly stressed and let down. I asked from the beginning about pricing but she just wouldn’t respond or would brush over the topic - for months. I understand pricing may vary depending on amount and level of alteration but there were zero guidelines or responses to specifics. About a month before my wedding, approaching my final fitting, she said she had a family emergency, which if you read through previous comments, this has happened before at other times. Perhaps this is true, but it was hard to communicate with her or lock down any information about rescheduling or urgency. A week and a half before my wedding, I tried on my dress again and noticed I needed further alterations, after paying. She didn’t respond for several* days. I was frantic and stressed about money and time and just wanted to feel great on my day. I felt loyal to Erin, however I felt strung along by her non-responsiveness so close to my big day. I was so stressed I had to text her and say β€œplease respond”. I finally got to the weekend prior and decided to pay money to go elsewhere to ease the pain of waiting for any word back. She finally texted, several days later, on Tuesday prior to my Saturday wedding, saying she could fix it, but I had already gone elsewhere to avoid the game-like feeling ramping up to the wedding. She was so kind and warm and great in person, but her communication and follow through was painful, as well as any communication around pricing, which was more than I anticipated (after looking online through similar scenarios since I had no knowledge of how much it may be). When I took my dress in to the new location, they showed me that there were open stitches and it wasn’t even finished. Overall the experience wasn’t bad, but the last thing a bride needs the week of their wedding is a feeling of panic and non-response (for days) when it pertains to their dress. I had reached out to ED and they just said she’d reach out. There wasn’t much urgency, and that’s what stuck with me the most

The seamstress does not have it together. I bought my dress from Xtabay (the shop downstairs). The dress was lovely and the sales staff were wonderful. However, when trying to get alterations done the seamstress was completely unorganized and quite rude. To start I spoke with her on the phone when buying the dress and she quoted a much lower price on the alterations than what she ended up asking for later. It took me a month to get in for my first fitting. I had an appointment one month later to see how the alterations were coming along. She had to cancel due to a personal emergency which was quite understandable. I was very sympathetic and quite flexible and agreed to meet up with her the next week. It took four days and several texts to set that up. She picked the date and said she was free anytime on that date. I sent a text to confirm the time. I didnt hear anything back for a few days so I sent her a reminder text the day before asking if we still had an appointment the following day. She responded by saying she totally spaced it and wanted to push our appointment out another week. I sent her a text explaining how difficult that was for me and how disappointing and unprofessional this was. Instead of apologizing she decided to send me a lengthy and condescending text making excuses about how hectic her schedule is and how I could take my business elsewhere if I found her to be so unprofessional and overpriced. This was a little more than one month before my wedding and I was really starting to worry. I made my peace with her and set up another appointment because I was too terrified to try and take my dress somewhere else on such short notice.Thankfully I ended up getting a great last minute recommendation and cancelled with her. When I went to pick up my dress shed had my dress for over 6 weeks and not a thing was done to it! What a nightmare!

Very cute shop but overall they lack a variety of dresses. Staff was friendly but inappropriate with shouting across the room between each other while another bride and guest were in there that a certain dress was too much for me and out of my budget.

Their gowns are gorgeous, but unfortunately their staff brings their rating down for me, big time.I fell in love with a dress there and purchased it. Unfortunately my wedding was called off before the dress even arrived to the shop - and the staff at The English Dept were incredibly rude, arrogant, and un-helpful. I tried very hard to work with them on other routes we could take with the dress at that point, but they were very un-interested and un-willing to work with me.Unsure of what I was going to do with my $2k dress at this point, I asked them for recommendations on where I should get it preserved… and they oddly enough had ZERO recommendations. What kind of shop sells $2-5k wedding dresses and has no idea where to preserve them? Seriously…So then I asked for recommendations of where to re-sell, and of course they had no recommendations for me - and they suggested that I donate it.I am very disappointed with how I was treated by The English Department and I highly discourage anyone from purchasing a dress there. Its true their dresses are stunning, but I would HIGHLY recommend making the trip up to THE BRIDAL THEORY in Seattle as they have many (+more) of the same designers, and better staff.
