At first I thought this was fun place to find books and DVDs. But you can bring in pretty much any number of comics, books, or DVDs and the guy running the store will just offer $20 worth of store credit and not to mention when I decided to grab some hand sanitizer after doing some digging, my hands were literally covered with fecal matter and whatever else. Absolutely disgusting and disorganized.
This shop offers a huge selection of excellent books at surprisingly low prices. Yes, there are some piles of books on the floor that you have to be careful not to knock over - but so what? It is a secondhand bookstore, after all! My experience of the staff working there is that they are both friendly and helpful, in spite of some reviews to the contrary My only complaint is that their Facebook page is still talking about a Memorial Day Sale. Go there if you love books and enjoy browsing in a large shop with books in all categories as I do. You will not be disappointed.
This store rules, books stacked on the floor the way the good lord intended when she made floors.
Fun spot to look for books. Found a couple diamonds for next nothing. Also read a quite a few pages of some I got interested in. Had a great time in this old bookstore. Smelled like the Neverending Story, should have smelled
It makes sense that a used book/periodical store like this would be kind of chaotic, crammed full of stuff, and a little dusty—thats all part of the charm! But this place doesnt stand a chance thanks to the uber-nasty shopkeeper that I encountered on a recent Saturday. Im not going into details except to say that he went out of his way to be rude and unhelpful. He made his crummy store seem totally unwelcome. Will I never return? Will I warn my friends? Bingo.
Was introduced to this place by my bro-in-law. Took the kids comic book shopping there one afternoon. Now every time I go to Portland to visit them I make it a point to go to Bingo Used Books too! Great prices, and Ive found some really good comic books for my collection. Bring your own bags and boards to take care of your newly found treasures!
This place is really awful. I don’t take the time to leave reviews but WOW. This place is absolutely filthy, the most disorganized bookstore I’ve ever seen in my life, I couldn’t tell who was staff and who was browsing so I couldn’t ask anyone for help. I walked in with two big boxes of books to sell because I had called prior and was told that they are buying books from people currently. A guy who I only knew who worked there because he was standing behind the counter, didn’t introduce himself, just told me to set my boxes down wherever. There were about 100 other boxes of books scattered around that could easily get mistaken for my boxes of books which made me very uncomfortable. I waited for about 30 almost 45 minutes before he even asked why I was there, after standing there with my very heavy boxes not setting them down because I didn’t want them to get mixed in with the other stuff. Then he tells me he’s not even the person who buys the books, that guy is in the back. Finally, he comes up. There are signs that say masks are required everywhere, and the man from the back is not wearing one. He comes up, gets inappropriately close to me, and doesn’t even look at a single book I have. Just says “I’ll give you 20 in trade. We’re not buying books.”I was literally told less than an hour prior, by the same, disgusting, rude, man over the phone they were BUYING books currently. I presume he was the owner. Thanks for wasting my day. I hope no one else ever goes here.
Went in looking for a book and asked for help and the guy who I’m guessing owns this store who was “working” at the front desk told “maybe it’s in the nature section” and when I asked where that was because it’s so messy and chaotic in there he responded with “read the signs I don’t get up for one book”. I then said “wow great customer service thanks for the help” and he told me to get out. HORRIBLE experience.
Love this place, best place to find vhs tapes and dvds that you cant find anywhere else!
The inside of this used book store is just as bad as the outside. Cracked windows, poorly kept exterior, and interior. Carpeting is filthy and deteriorating, books are poorly organized and managed, and anyone who works there regrettably has zero understanding of customer service. They have no interest in helping direct you where a book or author might be, and visibly show the discontent they have for working there.I would never recommend this place, or return under any circumstances.
What a mess!! I walked in and was disgusted by the piles and piles of unorganized books, records and movies. I had come in looking to a copy of Pride and Prejudice so I asked the man behind the counter where it might be. ‘In the back!’ He hollered and pointed towards the back of the store.‘Is it alphabetized?’ I asked.‘In the back’ he yelled at me again and gestured me away.I had to dodge and dart around teetering piles of books to reach the back where the Classic section was. It was in a dimly lit corner and to my disappointment Nothing was Alphabetical!! Everything was just jammed in Willy Nilly with not a care for any of the books. I tried to look at the spines to find what I was looking for but it was so dark I couldn’t see well enough to read the titles.Needless to say, I didn’t find what I was looking for and after my one, and only, trip to this dismal store I will never go back.
This is a good place to buy book. Most range between 3 to 5 dollars.I gave him over 6 books and he only offered $4 in trade. Not a great deal for me as far as resale.I was able to find several books to buy. He has no catalog or reference to where books are in the store. You are left to seek & find.
I love this place but I will say the people who work there are definitely not very friendly at all. The general feeling I get when I’m in there is that I kinda am not welcome. They can be fairly nice at times but most often they treat you like they don’t care about the customers too much. And they can’t be bothered to wear masks much if at all. The selection is great for me because I love the hunt. It is organized chaos there. The one thing I find most difficult is that they dont stick to a reliable opening and closing hours. You never know if they will be open or not so I can’t just swing by. Hope this place can stick around and improve because I do like these kinds of shops and want to support them.Edit: just went back for the sale and the old man WAS BEYOND RUDE YELLING AT ME because he didn’t want to add up each book I bought. He did the math in his head and it was wrong!!! Then screamed at me and grabbed the books and said then I’m not selling them. He said do you expect me to add up each book? I said well YES I DO! You are having a sale and it’s your job to do that!!!!I wanted the books so I paid but this old man is HORRIBLE!!! And I have spent hundreds here. Beyond disappointed!!! Why have a sale if you just make up the price as you wish in the end. BS and how about be nice to your loyal customers???
I dont like being watched and given dirty looks. Might come back might not.
Once again, GREAT BOOKSTORE!Once again, old man is a total Oscar the Grouch!Once again, I Dont Care!Once again, there werent enough hours to collect all the books I wanted to adopt!😭Maybe next time Ill remember to bring a. U-Haul and my moms credit card! 😈🤘
This place has literally so many books and magazines. .25¢ CDs need I say more? A little unorganized and you really have to dig.
This is the best hole in the wall bookstore ever. Very well priced and lots to choose from! (Great section of kids books!)
The owner has horrible customer service, and was incredibly rude. Im truly sickened that another human being treated me the way he did. The lack of respect is very obvious. Being nice goes a long way! Do NOT support this business.
This is a place you come to get lost in books. If you’re looking for something specific go to Powell’s. This is where you go to find a book on homemaking in the Middle Ages you didn’t know you wanted. 5/5 will trade books and get lost again.
I love this place. If you have a couple hours to spare, and just want to look through stacks and stacks and stacks of books, this is your place! The prices cannot be beat. Awesome book inventory, awesome comic book inventory, awesome DVD inventory, back issues of magazines. The older owner is very no nonsense, but I appreciate that. I donate books to my work, and I can come here, stock up on a bunch of good books to donate and not break the bank.
I waited 2 hours for them to open to sell my books I waited from 12 to 2 no one showed up so I left...they wasted my time. I suppose if you want service call ahead? If they decide to answer🤷♀️
I stood there for 15 minutes before being helped. I almost walked out. Inexpensive used books.
I absolutely love this bookstore. An enormous collection of books, magazines, graphic novels, movies, and music. Extremely affordable prices and the employees will usually give you coupons at checkout! Truly a classic used bookstore. Anyone who wants a more homey feel than Powells would really enjoy Bingo Books.
I wanna love it...but for the love of God, over half a million are dead. The owners have no excuse to be maskless. Everytime. Im done.
Lots of books, good time.
Great if you want something to read. Horrible if you are a collector. No bags or boards. Books are in rough shape.
Perfect used book store. Tons of books and great prices.
Great selection, good prices, but the area could be cleaned up a little bit and there are some areas that need better lighting
Pretty cool place if you are looking for some old magazines. Big variety of old playboy magazines. And of course, there was a lot of books. A bit messy and dusty but it made the visit more interesting
Books are organized by subject. We brought my bike up there to get worked on while we shopped for books. Nice people. Thousands of books. Super cheap.
Dont bother trying to sell books here. Old man waited until I unloaded nearly 200 new and slightly used books said hed pay 12 dollars in store credit, then told me to just take them all back, because I was taking up too much time. Traded half of them to Powells and made nearly 100 dollars.
The fish tacos are to die for. Good books too.
An ocean of older books, semi-organized, and all at very low prices. You could spend hours here thumbing through thousands of hardback and paperback used books. They also have DVDs and music. If you like books, youll like this place.
Horrible experience. Workers aren’t wearing masks during a pandemic and the conditions of the store and it’s materials are disgusting. Tried to go and sell some books and the man working just looked at the stack and said no without even looking.
That got that you d aver time I go there. Thay got what I need aver time.
I assume this is what happens when a hoarder opens a bookstore. Piles of random books everywhere. Nothing is by genre. Nothing is alphabetical. Double stacked on shelves two deep and piles overflowing onto the floor. Definitely not for anyone handicapped or unsure on their feet. You have to jump over crates of random DVDs to get to other side of the rack. Dirty. Half the store consists of old VHS tapes. If he would get rid of those, hed have room to get the books off the floor. Even when you do find a section like Western you will also find random copies from thrillers to romance tucked in with them.
Cool place, great deals everyone should check it out.
Apparently only for in person shopping. Won’t check for book by phone.
I love this place could spend a whole day getting lost.
Such a great little bookstore! It feels like it goes on forever and they have awesome prices. Not only are there books in every genre but they also have movies and music there too! Its a little cluttered but that adds to the ambience of the store (bookstores should be floor to ceiling shelves full of stories in my opinion)! They also had a bike sale going on while I was here, Im not sure how long it lasts or if its all the time but this was definitely an excellent stop!
These foul-mouthed guys couldnt care less about you. They gruffly mumble, over there if you ask anything.During Covid theyre walking around coughing with no masks on in the store
Great store for browsing, not so much for finding something specific. They are super generous with price and often have sales.
Got a great selection of some cool books and a bike shop to boot what more could you want Nice company too.
We used to LOVE this place,my daughter loved going there, she loves books and enjoyed the kid area, loved the treasure hunt, and bringing some of her books back to get credit for more. I always got a bad vibe from all the people that worked there, but tried to ignore that for my childs sake, since she loved going there. We looked forward to them opening, even won a voucher at movie in the park for their store, hopefully thought they were about community. The entire staff are RUDE and unwelcoming. The husband of the team was decent only once, yes only once, the wife not at all. The elderly man was kind to my kid,I admit. We spent a good sum there, especially in the kid section. Like I said I ignored the negativity. Then they cut the kids section on half, boo. Still went. Then one rainy day, my kid brought a bag of books for credit, all of a sudden she was told rudely, after ignoring her for 10 mins, we dont take those kind of books, ummm, since when, they had for years, even if it was a small credit.Still gave them one more chance, she picked out her books, went to pay with her last credit, and they wouldnt accept it, no explanation. She was near tears, she got old enough to see for herself, how unkind these people are. After years of going there we were done ignoring the unpleasantness for our love of books. She said I dont want to ever go there again mommy. So there is my review. God bless.
They have me a free book when I checked out after I commented on it sitting on the counter. Pretty neat
An amazing selection with a knowledgeable owner. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing. This is an honest business.
Favorite bargain books. Hours vary so show up more in the afternoon but dont expect them to adhere to their hours because if its slow they will close early as it says on their sign so if I am wanting to go there I usually go in the middle time frame so I can get some books. They have movies, and more than just books and will take in donated ones if you have some too. I think if you like used books they are worth it.
This place is a bit of a scam. Yes they sell used books at cheap prices in their mess of a store. The real business is the Amazon listing factory in their basement. NEVER SELL YOUR BOOKS HERE! I brought 15 boxes of designer books. I told him, “look, I’m mostly donating these and want you to make a killing off them. A token $100 would have been enough. He wouldn’t give more than $55 and told me that was a screaming deal for me. Huh?! I was in a hurry and took it but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I wish I had a review like this to warn me.
The gentleman at the counter did seem a bit inconvenienced by our questions, however he did have an uncanny knowledge of how the store was categorized. Interesting place if you like to treasure hunt. The bathroom was pretty gross. As another reviewer said they have a well organized, low priced collection of classic literature, even Ibsen plays. Would definitely recommend if youre not looking for something specific. Will definitely go back.
Bingo is a wonderful, family owned and operated used book store! Feed your inner book nerd and visit the store with endless shelves that are filled with books galore. Whether you are looking to get a book for a good price, sell your old books or simply buy some classics that youve always wanted but never gotten around to buying it is a great experience for all book lovers. Stop in sometime and have fun!
I absolutely love this book store. I used to hop between Borders, Barnes and Noble, and Powells but now that Ive found this place, I dont think I can ever go back. Its much, much cheaper than other places and has the most books I have ever seen that has not been in a library. Its true that its kind of hard to find things, but theyre set up as a browsing store; not a grab and go thing. Its nice to find that those places still exist. The best part is that the employees are super helpful and understanding...and if you sweet talk them a little, youll get a discount. ;)When I first came into the store, tucked in on the side of Powell Blvd. that makes it very easy to miss, I had a few boxes of books to sell. I didnt get too much for it, but they were nice and it was painless. The last time I sold to Powells, I didnt get almost anything. I understand their system because they sell their books so cheap, and they gave me a good amount in trade so I got to dig into their alphabetized fiction section for a few hours.Seriously, if youve got the time to kill and an open mind about trying new things, Id go to this place. Theyre a small, independent business thats family owned, so there arent a bunch of people hustling and bustling around. Theyre super nice and will hold a conversation with you instead of just the traditional Hi, how may I help you? Thank you, good bye. Definitely 5 stars and two thumbs up. :)
A gentleman that was working there was absolutely rude . I asked for help finding a book and he told me to go find it myself ( after I looked for it on my own and couldn’t find ). It was my first time there . Than he had the nerve to say “ go browse around for other books it’s the only book you’re reading “. Refused to help me, was snarky, sarcastic and yelled at me when I told him his customer service skills could improve after his mean behavior towards me . I’m shocked ! I was so excited to find a used book store but never mind . Avoid and go somewhere else !!!
Exactly like a used book store should be like. Books galore.
Rather crowded, but a very eclectic selection of books, movies and music.Wander through the store, marvel at the layout that puts metaphysics next to horses.
An unassuming gem - drove past it a hundred times, finally went in & found a stack of treasures. Will from now on go there first every time I need a book & often when I dont
Looking for a specific book and the owner questioned my reasoning for wanting to read one specific book. He asked is that the only book you are ever going to read in your life?. What sort of question is that? A librarian or a professional book seller would never ask that question, the owner has a piss-poor attitude. Only reason its not a one star is because at least he is selling books for a living. Not sure how he keeps in business with his attitude towards people though.
SO MANY BOOKS! The selection is amazing, and the prices are extremely fair. The best part; it smells like a used book store should! Love it!
A real spot for diggers. The addition of the bike shop in the space eliminated the bargain section but there is still plenty to find. Some prices are good, some bizarre. A surprisingly small selection of kids books but that isnt what I look for. If you want heavily organized go to Powells. If you want to get lost in the stacks looking for something you didnt know youd find come here.
The owner was friendly. Got a good selection of books for a good price.
Totally scary don’t shop here. My pregnant friend and I were both harassed by the elderly gentleman who works there. Disrespected twice, and yelled at. He threw books at us when we were simply trying to clarify a price. When I say threw. I mean he actually threw them. No one in the store or any other employees said a word about it They just stared. This man should not be working there. Harassing customers violently? At a bookstore? Can not believe the way we were treated.
Awesome, surprisingly large exclusively used book store. Check out the specials at the front ($.35 books, $.50 CDs) and then head into the piles (sometimes literally) of loosely categorized used books in the back. This is a dig-for-it kind of place -- as an old-school used bookstore should be -- but as long as you dont come in looking for one specific book, youll find something that fits (plus a lot of things youd never expect) pretty quickly. Theres a great shelf of Oregon-specific history books in the back, BTW.
Super cool place. Really love the atmoshpehr
Fantastic selection of used books... Family owned... Super cool place ... Amazing prices.
This store does not pay you for anything. The owner wants to give you a trade, which is in his favor. The only positive outcome is he supports Bicycles for Humanity.
I really enjoy this place & don’t mind the disarray of the books/movies, however, the staff is really rude. Both times I’ve gone in we were treated as if we shouldn’t be there to begin with. They also don’t follow through on their sales. Went in today to get in before their sale ends, which ends two days from now, & they said the sale was over. When we asked why it ended early, they rolled their eyes & moved on. Unfortunately, I will keep returning because I love the place itself but I’ll no longer waste my time by interacting with the staff.Update:Owner,Thank you for responding, but please be sure to print sale flyers with the correct dates because we have flyers given to use from the staff the last time we were there that says the Thanksgiving sale is from Nov 28th-Dec 4th, 2018. We appreciate it, thank you.
I love this store.. only been in there once, and I never wanted to leave. Books for years!! Cheap too, $8 for for books, Borders and Powells got nothing on them (other than organization and service, but I didnt mind, I like being left to my own devices in a store like this.) Definitely coming back for more, Thnx again you guys!
Ive been coming here occasionally for years. Its a cool used bookstore with an amazing selection of old math and science texts. Definitely a good alternative to Powells overpriced-yet-very-mainstream selection.
Proprietor was rude. Wants you to come and buy but will not help you find anything. I asked if anything was organized because I was looking for a particular title and was told it was set up for browsing. He then said that it upsets him when people come in and ask for one book, making sure that I heard him. I was ready to buy, and had already selected another title, however, once he said What, dont know how to browse? There was no way he was going to get my patronage. I would not recommend this store to anyone.
They absolutely have a ton of books in their store. However, I had a hard time locating anything I was looking for because they were out of order or stacked in piles on the ground. I had to wait for the man working behind the counter to decide to stop gossiping with someone on his cell phone to ask for help. He then acted inconvenienced at having to help a customer. If you are looking for a good experience in a bookstore, I would suggest heading to Powells Hawthorne street location. Its about a mile away and definitely worth the journey.
Smells like old books, books everywhere. Extremely unorganized, this is for hunting and exploring, this is where you go for a nerd safari, not for a quick errand.
I love used book stores. This one has lots of books, but it is pretty clear that they have no idea what they have, nor are they interested in providing any customer service at all. I was looking for a particular book, but forgotten the authors name. I was told they could not help me without the authors name. The clerk refused to use the computer to google the book for the authors name for me. I finally found a spot where my phone got service and got the author myself. I went back to the clerk with the name of the book and the author and he told me to go look in the fiction section. It was a non fiction book. I asked if they carried non fiction, oh yes, but not by author name or book name, just slapped onto the shelf.I really got the impression that I was inconveniencing him by expecting help to find a book. I was told this is a browsing store. In other words, if you dont come in wanting anything in particular, dont mind walking up and down aisles with no rhyme or reason, then this is the store for you.The prices were not fabulous, so not sure why one wouldnt just go to Powells to browse. At least the clerks are friendly.
Lots of books
Old school used book store. Expect some fun excavating!
This bookstore was a good place to kill time.It has enormous variety of books.5 months ago, I volunteered a place near here,When I was on my way to home and waited for bus,I used to drop here.
Guy is a jerk. Seems to hate customers. Then he offers me 4 dollars in store credit on a big lot of name author, great conditioned books. Dont have much use for piles of old playboys though.
Bingo Books has tons of books, records, cds, dvds to choose from, most of which are categorized nicely even though not inventoried entirely. Its a great fun relaxing place to shop for books at great prices!
Diamonds in the ruff. A great hidden gem in Portland.
EXTREMELY RUDE staff. Grunted at me. No eye contact. Treated me like I was a burden that was wasting his time. Gave off a really negative vibe. Not worth digging through piles of trash to find a deal when everything is overpriced. Dont waste your time; he doesnt appreciate your patronage.
The gentleman sounded so nice on the phone, I popped in to try and sell some text books and I politely declined his 5$ to then be aggressively spoken down to.No thanks
This place has a great selection and prices. I cant leave without finding something here!
Good customer service & a huge selection of books at great prices.
Probably my favorite bookstore in Portland. :) It probably wont be your best bet if youre looking for something really specific, but if you want to go find a gem for cheap its awesome.
Has alot of old books most are in poor condition, and dont bother going here to sell anything I took in about 20 30 boxset dvds, and about 15 good quality books from best selling authors and he offered 10 dollars. Dont waste your time.
Wonderful variety on anthro/sociology and history stuff amid the labyrinthes
Good selection of vhs and books. Good prices too.
Very friendly staff, good selection of movies and books
I would go back for a treasure hunt if I had a lot of time to kill. Prices seem reasonable.
Claustrophobic environment, books poorly sorted, prices are poor compared to other used bookstores in the region. The old guy is a grump and is toxic to customers! Caveat emptor! I will not return.
There is a large selection of books and the prices are reasonable. The only parking though is on the side streets.
Huge, full of words, tape, and knowledge. Accept trades. Excellent.
Bingo Used Books has no streetside entrance. Parking is available on the side street. There us a Trimet stop nearby. The Bookstore buys books as well as being a bookseller.
Great selection at a great price. Be prepared to be searching through piles of books though.
Amazing selection of books, with amazingly low prices
Awful selection of Good Will reject books, cds, vhs tapes, and comics. None of the shelves are maintained and, to echo previous reviews, the clerk seemed inconvenienced by having customers. He spent the entire time talking loudly on his cell phone without acknowledging a single person in the store.
I agree with other poster. I had called this place at 7:00 and had asked if they sell vhs movies they said yes I asked when they closed they said 8 I asked how much per vhs they said range from .50-2.00 after that we hung up. I am 9 months pregnant and wanted to watch some Disney classics. I got in my car drove 30 mins away from home to get there to find that they had closed shop early once again, regardless that I had just called. For a family owed business youd think they would want money customers and good reviews, but there actions speak differently. I wasted a phone call gas and a hour of my time for no good reason when they could have simply told me they were closing early.Never will I return or recommend this place.God Bless!
Great bookstore for browsing and serendipitous finds. Also has movies, vinyl and comics.
I wish I had gone to this shop first - it would have saved me time, gas, and a lot of money. Bingo has a wide selection of classics, and they were much cheaper than the other two used book shops I visited first.
Bike repair shop is chill. Book store part seems and feels grimy.
Awesome bookstore. Books and more and all well organized.
Pleasant staff, They could invest in fans, or air conditioning
