I brought my bike in for repairs and a tune up. I was given an estimate of one to two weeks for the bike to be assessed and the work to be done. After one week, got a call to confirm the estimated cost and get started on the bike. Two more weeks and I hadnt heard back so I tried to call. Left a message, never got a call back. Tried calling again, still could not get a hold of anybody after trying several times. I finally just walk there to find out the bike was done and nobody had contacted me. We had also discussed replacing the pedals, which they did not do. I do not recommend this shop.

I recently bought a Marin San Rafael DS2 at this store. The owners and staff were very attentive and helpful while I was deciding which bike and extras to buy. During the first week I found that the seat needed adjustment, so I came back in and Dan quickly fixed it. When I asked about more comfortable seats, Sarah recommended one that is perfect for me. Im very happy with quality bike and accessories. On top of all this, offer free tune-up service on my bike. So glad I discovered this shop in my neighborhood!

You know that feeling you have when you finally find an auto mechanic you totally trust? Thats how I feel about Outer Rim.I recently purchased a new Aventon Level bike through Outer Rim. The bike shipped with a defective rear wheel, and a new wheel had to be ordered through the manufacturer. They had my back and were able to place the order for the replacement the same day. Shipping was delayed through FedEx for weeks. Dan and Sarah were extremely patient with my many phone calls asking if it was in yet. Once the wheel arrived they had the bike up and running right away.Dan is very straightforward and real, Sarah is very patient and understanding. They are a terrific team, they are super competent, and made the bumpy process of navigating a warranty replacement as smooth as possible. You will not regret doing business with Outer Rim - highly recommended!

About a year ago I went online to try and find myself a bmx bike. Not the greatest idea but I tried it anyways. After being disappointed and never receiving my bike I had my money refunded and went to The Outlet Rim. Glad I did. It took them two weeks to fix my bike. It was older bike so needed some work but after a week I had to go into the store to see the bike. I talked to a young kid who went through the bike and said he would have it ready soon and the chain replaced and one other part. Another week goes by, and the bike didn’t have the chain replaced when I came to pick it up. I asked to have the chain replaced and when the tech returned the bike he said he added more components last minute and he wasn’t going to charge me. When I paid for the bike I was charged for all of the last minute changes. Poor poor experience. Would never take my bike there again.

They have earned my business for life. Incredible customer service that went above and beyond. I came in for what would be a simple job but Spring beat me to it and they had a backlog. Since it was a simple tune-up and tire replacement for my kid’s bike, they did their best (and succeeded). In addition, this location has had many hardships due to theft and vandalism. It is unfortunate that a business has to continue to endure setbacks that are outside of the normal obstacles that running a business presents yet so many have had to. Please visit them if you live in NE to support them. They will take care of you.

Went in to inquire about several pieces to upgrade 2 of our BMX bikes we just bought. The first person to confront us was so stoned my partner had to repeat himself after the guy said okay what. After It was explained again he left and then a woman came out who was so rude she immediately lost my business after the first sentence came out of her mouth. She had a nasty matter-of-fact tone, no insight, no suggestions we didnt already know, as evidence by the pics of the 3 other old school BMX bikes we also said we wanted stuff for, and said she couldnt help us with what we wanted unless we brought our bikes in. Even though we had pics and exact specs. She is FOS and pretentious. She didnt even know/recognize what brand of bike we currently have. This is definitely not someone I would trust buying anything or accepting suggestions from. A supposed bike shop with experts who cant even recall a major brand name bike company. Nope! Ill stick to my regular shop, Vancouver Cyclery, where we were treated like family as soon as I walked in the shop. I feel like a cheated just walking in your door. Check your tone. It matters.Recap: We have no problem with anyones culture. We are a culturally diverse family. Maybe you have your own cultural bias and assume everyone else is like you. Its kind of snarky to respond to a customer and accuse them of having an issue with someones culture. Yes, I assumed he could have been stoned, but not on drugs. He was nurse-maiding 3 canned ice teas as he attempted to conversate with us, but never introduced himself. Not sure if you noticed, but we put back the items we were going to purchase and left because of your matter-of-fact curt presence. Maybe Instead of attempting to justify your actions with accusations you should take the criticism and change your attitude.

The woman said they were closed and she’d not checked her messages. Told her I’m just going to take the bike back. I have to say that I was disappointed with my latest experience at this bike shop when I asked for a refund on an overcharge. I have been shopping for bike parts at this shop for about a year or so and have had positive experiences here. Two weeks ago, I went to the shop to get a couple tubes for flat tires and ended up spending over $100 for a couple other things I needed, thinking it was a good opportunity to use some of my economic stimulus money to support a small business. I was given good service and the lady who helped me talked me through and presented options for those things. One of those items was a bike helmet which she showed me several of. She told me the price of the one I purchased and it had a sticker with the same price on the inside of my helmet. I purchased my items and went home. When I looked at the receipt at home I noticed that I had been charged $5 more than the sticker price. It was only $5, but I thought it worth following up to get a $5 refund. So the following Saturday, I went back and told the same lady that I had been overcharged for my helmets. She told me that the price went up on those helmets and that they had so much to do that they didnt have time to update the price tag. I told her that typically the price that is on an item is what typically stands as the price. In several years that I worked in the grocery business, especially as a manager, that was typically the way we handled price differences - we refunded the amount that was overcharged. In this case, she held to the increased price with apparently little concern for customer satisfaction. I told her I understood her position but didnt particularly like it. Its unfortunate that they are losing a customer over a small overcharge, which they were unwilling to refund.

I recently had to replace my shifting cables + one shifter, which led me to unwrap bar tape + disconnect my rear break cable, front + rear derailleur cables. I reattached break cable but could not do shift cables successfully. I brought bike to shop, agreed to pay $40 to reconnect the front and rear derailleurs - $20 each - and $10 to wrap the bars. tape was already off, and I provided new tape. When I came in to pick up my bike, the mechanic who I had talked to originally - a middle aged bald man - helped ring me up. he let me know that he had noticed my rear break was a little soft, so he fixed that as well. In the end, I paid $40 for the derailleur servicing, and, in the mechanics words, a, $10 miscellaneous service charge which included the bar tape wrap and the rear break servicing. When I had brought my bike in, one of my levers was mounted about an inch lower on the drops relative to the other, as I wanted to keep it out of the way while I was replacing my cables. instead of adjusting that clearly temporary mount position to match the other lever, they had wrapped the bars as-is. In addition to this, they had clumsily wrapped electrical tape about three inches in towards the hoods, and when I unwrapped the tape to fix their mistakes, I found that they hadnt even cut the bar tape, as is pretty much standard practice across the board. As it it would be relatively easy for me to fix this problem - plus the fact that I was really only losing about five bucks - I decided not to mention it.After further inspection, I noticed that one of the pads on the rear break was rubbing against the wheel. I also noticed that the front derailleur cage was rubbing against the chain in the higher gears. Fixing those problem took me about three hours. The next day, I decided to call the shop to let them know that, bar fixing the rear derailleur, they had failed at properly completing any of the tasks I had payed for, and caused me to undertake hours of labour. I asked for my money back. The person I talked to, who I recognized as a middle aged woman I had seen in the shop, began by apologizing, but shifted to skepticism, claiming that the charges I paid should have been much greater, implying that I was making false claims as if I usually spend my Fridays calling up bike shops and harassing them with fabricated grievances. As I continued to stress the validity of my complaints, she seemed to abandon the line that I had made up my visit, and started make claims that their service had not, in fact, been flawed, and I was delusional or a liar. She continued by saying that they had been doing me a favor by charging me some $60 less than was standard for the services they performed on my bike, which, by her backwards logic, would mean that I should be complacent with their sub-par work. I let this woman know that her logic was flawed, and that if I pay for a service, I expect it to be completed in full. She then returned to her claims that I was lying about how much I had paid, and therefore lying about my visit altogether. To this, I responded that I would like to speak with the mechanic who serviced my bike (giving a description), who would corroborate the amount of money I paid and the services that were performed. The line went silent for about thirty seconds, and I could faintly hear the lady talking to someone with a male voice. When she returned, she denied the existence of this mechanic, then, when I repeated my description (to which there could only be one match), she said their were four mechanics, and she didnt know who I was talking about. There are four bald, middle aged mechanics?, I asked. Yes, she responded. It was at this point that I realized I wasnt going to get anywhere if I continued to argue with this woman, so I said thank you and hung up. I have contested the charges, but foolishly, I didnt take any pictures, so theyll probably get my money anyway. Two thumbs way, way down - dont patronize bad work and even worse hospitality.Edit: ignore owner response, read my yelp review - more detailed.

I ultimately can say that I trust what ORB says in regard to maintenance and repair, and I WILL make that extra effort to travel back to ORB over any other Bike repair center that may be closer to me. I hate to say it--but Ive had to revise my earlier review based on my customer experience the last two times. After spending a few hundred dollars at Outer Rim (the tech has always been great on getting everything done) I think that the concept of customer service is lacking severely. Im starting to get the general impression that if you dont purchase your bike there then you dont get the same standards of service then someone that does. I was in the process of paying for a repair a few weeks ago and literally about to pay, when a guy walked up with a new bike. Of course, I got pushed to the side and had to wait literally 15 minutes just to get out of there! In addition, the rudeness of one of the techs (not the owners son nor the other partner) has an attitude that needs to be fixed. Its not very customer friendly when I drop off my bike to get it fixed, come back an hour later when its done, I ask for my bike and you snarl at me by saying Well we have a lot of those!. This is also the same guy that if you walk into the shop and no one else is around he doesnt acknowledge your presence. Its quite sad and I had high expectations, especially compared to River City and other larger shops like The Bike Gallery.Old reviewThe Outer Rim is now my favorite neighborhood bike shop in Portland! The service and prices are both great. The staff and techs are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Combine that with the community involvement that The Outer Rim has (they have Jazz nights) and you have a bike shop that is unbeatable in quality in Portland. I highly recommend them for all your purchases and repairs.

Tried to take it back to exchange it, lady there refused to work with us and argued every point (not unlike how they have nothing but excuses and comebacks in response to any negative feedback on here) even though the receipt claimed they accept exchanges up to 30 days. Fundamental lack of customer service in favor of making a quick dollar. There are a lot of other, honest bike stores that actually care about their customers. Look elsewhere!

These guys are great, I called ahead for a bike that wasnt built yet and they built it up for me, Brandon went out of his way to get me all set up on my new ride, everything was tuned perfectly. Great deal for the bike and the lifetime service is a major bonus. A great experience to shop here, great selection, I definitely recommend this shop anyone. Its great to see shops like these

Have always had helpful advice and friendly service from the Outer Rim. I’ve lived in the Hazelwood and Parkrose Heights area for four years now and they are absolutely the go-to neighborhood bike shop. Not sure what the lowball reviews here are about, but for what it’s worth a lot of businesses in this area contend with a sizable subset of weird, exploitative customers or straight up shoplifters. Just visit the local Freddy’s if you don’t believe me. Glad to see the owner isn’t just rolling over and taking it.Have had cranks and bottom bracket installed and purchased multiple cassettes and chains. The people there were always willing to help me find exactly the right parts and even give me advice on how to install them. I have even had free parts and free advice given to me at times of desperate need. They have earned my business and I assume will continue to do so

Brandon is great to work with. He guided me to the right bike for me. He made sure it was the right fit. I brought back and he replaced the stem for the handle bars at no charge. I love the bike. The seat is a bit uncomfortable but that would have been the case no matter where I bought it from and model I would have chosen. Brandon really cares that his customers are really satisfied and happy before and after their purchase.

The staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable. They helped me decide what lights would best fit my needs, pumped up my tires, and even gave me a stronger bike lock that would keep my bike secure as I save up for a stronger lock. I will be coming back here again for my bike needs in the future. Thanks Outer Rim for your service.

One of the most honest and respectable repair shops in Portland.Brandon is the best mechanic Ive ever met and will never misquote you for a repair. Honesty is a rare trait to find in the service industry, and if honesty is what youre looking for, The Outer Rim Bicycle Shop is the place to find it.

The owner and staff are very knowledgeable and take the time to make sure you get what youre looking for. I showed them what I wanted to build for my new bike and they recommended a few changes that were perfect and within the price range I wanted. All that with lifetime service on the bicycle is 5 stars in my book.

Bought a helmet a few days ago that didn’t fit quite right. Everyone was brusque and rude. As I was checking out, dude behind the counter made a lewd comment about my leggings. When I returned the helmet, none of the three dudes behind the counter knew how long the return would take to process. Very weird.Tl;dr broey atmosphere, no customer service, limited product knowledge, limited products. For a bike-friendly city, this is not a friendly bike place.Edit: reading through the defensiveness of the owner’s responses to anyone pointing out uncomfortable experiences is very telling. Let’s support local businesses that take criticism from customers as an opportunity for change, not an invitation to double down.Awesome local shops: River City Bicycles, Bike Gallery, Universal Cycles, Joe Bike ... I could go on.

I have been in multiple times for tune ups on my bmx bike, and the employees are always so helpful. Not only do they fix your bike for a low price, but they explain to you how to fix the bike yourself. They are always extremely nice and helpful and I always get exactly the information I need when I call in. Overall, outstanding customer service.

Came in on Thursday asking for a metal stay and bolt for my back bike fender. Young man presented me with a v shaped stay and I explained it was a single stay. At that point things started to go badly. He explained that they don’t make them (fenders with single stays) anymore but then I pointed to the one hanging from the ceiling that was for sale (the exact same one that I was talking about). He didn’t like that and proceeded to educated me on the fact that you just cant buy one stay and that it wasnt his fault and that I shouldnt be mad at him. I told him I was not mad but confused. Then he said maybe one could order them but he doubted it.He offered to take my name and number (which he did) for the manager to call me back later that day to see if one could be ordered but we did not receive a call that day or any other day (love caller id).Since this place was less than a mile from my house I thought I would give them a try. What a mistake. They have lost a local customer with 5 bikes.Oh yeah, contacted the maker of the fender and they sent me 2 stays and bolts for free!!!

My rear brake blew out on me on my ride yesterday. I took it in to Outer Rim today and they immediately fixed my issue then made additional adjustments to ensure I was safe with my ride. They warranty their work too, assured me if I had any issues to bring it back to them.My bike needs serious TLC and I know it, Ill take to them for a full tune-up.

The guys that work there are really nice, that being said, they are however overpriced and understaffed. I took my bike in to get a flat fixed and to buy the new innertube and the total was 20.99. I accept that as me paying for the convenience of their proximity to my home but its like buying milk at a gas station...if you can make it to the grocery store youll be better off...Most other places will do the same job for ten or fifteen tops.In addition, this is the second time Ive come in for that reason and while I appreciate that they operate on a first come first served basis, its definitely the second time I had to leave my bike with them overnight. Hey, it was a weekend, no big deal but I dont think Id come in during the week when I actually need my bike.

Called them up to get some information on some problems I was having with my bike. They said bring it by and we look at it and help you out. I live 35 miles away so I took my bike in an it was busy but they took the time to set me up with the parts I needed. Great customer service, very knowledgeable and wallet friendly. I have been back several times and it has always been the same experience.

Great place to buy your next bike from! Decent selection of bikes, but it is product knowledge and customer service that sets the OuterRim apart. The team took time to understand my biking styles and needs to enable me to select the right bike. This actually meant them taking a loss on the sale price as we determined that I did not need the gravel bike that I was interested in. I was amazed and impressed that they OuterRim team were more focused on getting me on the right bike, rather than locking me in on the $2k gravel bike that I was initially interested in.To top it off, they told me to delay my purchase by one one week as the store was having a 10% off all bikes sale the following weekend.Definitely go and see the team at OuterRim.Phil and Annie

By far the best bike shop I have found. I drove from Aloha all the way out here because I saw they carried what I needed and was blown away at how friendly this place was. I couldnt recommend this place more. Only reason I didnt give this 5 stars is because one of the employees there discourages other brands by claiming they are sold in retail stores, maybe because this employee is trying to push the bikes they sell and not what the customer wants. I will keep coming here but just buying parts.
