Sold me a defective brand new bottom bracket due to a bad internal bearing and then accused me of a improper install. The internal bearing had significant slop that could be felt when pedaling. Then when they removed the bottom bracket, they kept the main piece and showed me the plastic ring on the other side to say it was damaged. They also told me the bottom bracket they took out was the incorrect bottom bracket and then told me at the end of our interaction which one I needed and it was the exact same one they gave me before that was defective.Another occasion I went in to buy a brake caliper and the gentleman looking for parts was cussing and throwing parts around. Someone else that was there had to proceed to help me because of his “bad day”.I have gone to this co op for years and will not be going back.

The old gray mare ain’t what she used to be. This was a horrible interaction, but I don’t believe in ratings. I will play the “been coming here for 15 years card” and this place has a tendency to attract employees lacking customer service skills, with the exception of Tim and Harriet and usually Noah...and the lyrics ninja guy (I’m sure there have been others). They must have a worst customer service award. It’s clear they don’t care about reviews. I was entertained when the employee not wearing a mask backed up 2 feet from someone wearing a mask. Unless you are looking for a very specific component and you know they have it, go to River City, Gladys, Sellwood, or literally any other bike shop.

I came to get my vintage bike brakes looked at, specifically stating the brakes squeel super loud and that was the major issue. I just bought it from another bike guy who had tuned it up before selling it to me, had new brake pads, gears were greased and great, new brake cables etc..the only issues was the brake noise. The shorter petite male at Citybikes said it was my steel wheels in combo with my brake pads making the noise, and that Id need new wheels and probably brake pads. He was very brief and gave me little information, just presented the orange brake pads and said those are what originally came on this bike. Ended up spending around $260 for parts/labor. Took it home to ride. On my nxt ride my brakes were literally squeeling as before. I was irate. I brought it back in and explained that I had spent all this money here to fix that specific issue and it literally wasnt fixed at all. Another larger bearded employee said oh, its probably just that your brakes needed to be toed-in/adjusted. Sure enough he adjusted my pads in 10 seconds and actually took it out and rode it to make sure there was no noise. He let me go free of charge, but I was left wondering why the first guy charged me so much for a bunch of stuff I probably didnt need, when he couldve just toed-in the brakes, and didnt actually check his work to make sure the issue was fixed. Anyone that is a serious bike professional would take the bike out and test it after fixing it, especially for brake noise. So needless to say I wont come back. Just really disappointing because this shouldve been a no brainer and way less costly. Some people are all for co-ops, but in reality, co-ops just make it harder to fire problem employees with a history of bad customer service.

I’ve been going to this shop for years now. I bought my bike from them, and I’ve been taking it in for annual tune-ups ever since. Their prices are fair, and they have a VERY quick turnaround time. I messed up my brake arms after a recent tune up and they fixed it for me very quickly so I could be on the road the next day! They’ve also installed a new rack and spoke lights for me. They have the best selection of used road and mountain parts that I can find in the neighborhood. The employees act like theyre gods gift to the world of bike mechanics so if you have a question make sure you get all the terminology spot on or they make you wear a dunce cap and stand in the corner. Im mostly joking but seriously guys, buying a UBI course doesnt make you a physician. A lot of your customers have worked as mechanics and getting snappy at a bad question makes you look like a dork to them.

I am troubled to write a bad review on this place as I have had good experiences here. What I have noticed though is that there seems to be a major inconsistency regarding the quality of service you’ll get depending on who is behind the counter on that specific day. There is a young mechanic lady and a tall middle age bearded man who have been very kind and helpful. The other man/men however, oh boi..The first issue I ran into months ago was the difference in price quotes. I was quoted $55 over the phone to swap cassettes between two wheels and to brake a chain (tools I don’t have at home). This seemed outrageous for the amount of work/time required to do that. Curiously I tried coming in again in person last week and the gentlemen did the work for $25 including pulling a crankset out. Just oddSecond issue was regarding cutting the steerer tube on a carbon fork. I was quoted around $50 for the work which I found fair so I went ahead and dropped off the bike. I was very specific that I wanted the matching top cap I provided to go on there. When I picked the bike up I noticed that an old scratched top cap was installed instead and he said “your fork is not compatible with that cap so I went ahead and installed this one” I was charged an extra $20 for the used expansion plug and the beat up cap for a total of $70. Certain that this wasn’t right, I went to river city bikes And learned that my top cap does fit on the fork (duh) but citybike just proceeded to finish the job with whatever used parts they had in stock instead. River city pulled the part from citybike and installed to correct plug that works with my bike for a mere $20. Now the fork cutting is costing me $90.The mechanic lady at river city said that the new plug is resting uneven on the top of the fork steerer by 1-2mm indicating that my really expensive ENVE fork was not cut properly. Ughhhh??Third problem was just two days later when I came in with my girlfriend and her new bike to purchase fenders. We physically brought the bike with us to ensure that we were given the correct/compatible fenders for a disc brake bike. The gentleman looked at the bike (nice tall bearded man) and gave me a set of fenders for it. Upon opening the packaging at home a day later, I noticed that the front fender required to be screwed into a fork’s rim brake caliper hole which the disk brake fork does not have. Upon reading the instructions, we realized we were indeed provided the wrong set of fenders. Frustrated with the service at this establishment, we went down to river city to pick up the correct fenders.I called today to return the incorrect fenders and whoever picked up the phone was incredibly dismissive of my situation and kept questioning me like I was wrong. He said we can only take it back as a used part, I said it was never installed. He then said they are not taking returns at all due to COVID. Changed his story very quick. He proceeded to say “ hey buddy, I already told you we are not taking returns, is there anything else?”. I said I would keep the fenders and let every online review place know if my experience with this and he said “okay bye!! Love you!”I am certain that if it was the young lady or the nice guy who actually sold me the fenders, this could have been handled much more differentlyI will not be returning to this place ever again!

I bought a bike from these folks a few years back, when they still had the full shop down the street. I really liked the variety, and quality of service at the time. It looks like theyve refocused themselves on repair and maintenance, not so much on selling bikes. They do have a few bikes for sale, and they appear to be in good shape and at reasonable prices. Ive been going to city bikes for over 20 years now back when I used to restore and recondition 30s-60s era bikes. Their inventory of useful things is amazing, amassed over the decades. Ive been a bike messenger for a long time now and I get most of my parts, tires(even the tubes they put out for free mostly just need a patch), and the occasional service for things I dont own specialty tools for from this place. Their trade in and buying program makes it easy to get rid of what you dont in trade for what you want. They cover 90% of what youd ever need for riding around in the city.

This shop makes me feel comfortable asking questions and getting help without worrying about using all the correct bike terms. And there are more ladies working here than most bike shops in town. I took my 78 Colnago into the shop yesterday to have some new brake levers put onto the bike. Immediately upon walking into the store, I was confronted with a glazed over look and a sarcastic sigh as I approached the counter for help. The guy behind the counter was named Benjamin. Ignoring his obvious condescending stare, I stated that I wanted to have new brake levers put onto the bike. My request was greeted with a quick, and firm No. After what seemed like an eternity of him staring blankly at me, he reluctantly walks around the counter and starts looking at my bike. Why do I feel like I need to APOLOGIZE for walking into a bicycle repair shop to PAY for help?!After a half energetic approach to helping me, he starts writing me the work order. I ask him if I need to replace the brake cables long with the setup. He visibly rolls his eyes at me. At this point, Ive had it with his awful condescending attitude and I ask him Is there something wrong?. And against all forms of legitimate customer service, he tells me I AM THE PROBLEM. As a retailer working in customer service, I can tell you I have NEVER been treated like this in my entire life. At a maximum I took about 7 minutes of Benjamins time, and did absolutely nothing but listen to what he had to say. He then promptly walked away and passed me off to someone else in the shop. This shop was one of my favorite shops for bike repair in all of Portland. But my experience with Benjamin will make me think twice about giving my business to this shop if I see him again.

If youre looking for a hands-off bike fixing or maintenance, you can still go there but thats not their vibe.Although Im not a mechanic, Im a biking-enthusiast who wish to get involved in fixing the bike, so there is a lot I can do by myself: if you are too, than this is the right place for you.You can borrow lots of tools and pick advice from them.
