Price gouging during heatwave in order to reap a profit over trying to help their customers. Deplorable and unethical but I guess, whatever works from their standpoint. I wont be shopping here again. $499 for an AC that goes for $330 to $350. I should have done my research better and will try not to get swindled next time I encounter people like this. At least I wont be getting swindled by the people at Ankeny Hardware anymore. Neither will any of my friends. The no refunds and no cancellation policy should have tipped me off from the get go... but I was too trusting.Buyers beware, be smarter than I was and do your research. Good luck and Godspeed future buyers!

Super helpful folks. We went in looking for a specific part for a freezer handle and they spent the time looking for the part as well as educating us on it. Icing on the top was when they didnt have it they were happy to refer us to another store that would rather than just blowing us off. This is what small business ownership is all about and why all of us should support them

Favorite neighborhood hardware store. Need an oil lamp? They have it. Need a 10,000 btu a/c unit? They have it. Need the little latch for a busted door on your dryer? They have it. All kinds of appliance parts and hardware, and a great selection of tools, and a long history in the neighborhood. Im not at all surprised they outlasted the OSH that opened up two blocks away for a while.

Overheard in the store, the way he talks to people on the phone is appalling. It wasnt just one occasion, but multiple calls on different days I was in. Yeah, prices are high, and shockingly so on seasonal items. The old school charm is really just out of touch. Youll find people just as helpful at other stores, and they wont be condescending or price gouge. You have so many options in Portland, go anywhere else.

Its a nice store and the owner seems knowledgeable. The issue is that he has a sign that says get your protest supplies here it went on to list stuff that these vandals would need to protest in Portland. Why on earth would a small business owner encourage the sort of behavior?

Extremely rude over the phone and hung up on me.EDIT (in response to the owners comment): I also only had one question and he said “I don’t even know what you’re talking about!” and hung up. He didn’t offer to put me on hold and also didn’t explain the store was busy, otherwise I would have held. I wasn’t in a hurry. Rather than apologizing, he’s making up excuses for his rude behavior. I went to another independent hardware store nearby who didn’t have what I was looking for, but instead were extremely friendly and helpful and gave me a few other places to look instead. Go to Hippo or literally anywhere else but here.

Came in with my kiddo to look for a simple electronic part. Was condescendingly spoke to by the fat guy who is the owner and is apparently a know it all - and we left that place real fast because of the that awful place... edit response to the answer. No your workers don’t know their stock and asked overarching questions and they seem to get frustrated so they naturally default to call the owner as it looks like they were baffled, you appeared to about to have a aneurism. And I don’t appreciate your language and behavior in front of children. I knew after one second of talking with you that you didn’t have what I was looking for because your questions went on a tangent about all sorts of possibilities and seem to take spike your HBP. NOPe!

Parts available to consumers!Furnace stopped working on a night it was going to be a low of 26°F. Luckily I could tell what part wasnt working. Canvassed the metro area for parts store and Ankeny Hardware was the only one I could find who sold to consumers.Dont get me started on the wholesale racket to sell only to businesses who significantly upcharge when you call them to fix anything.Anyway, Ankeny Hardware had the part I needed, saved me over $400 dollars, and the family is toasty warm. I will definitely be back but kind of hope I wont need to. ;)

I was referred by another hardware store who said they absolutely couldnt help me with bathroom exhaust fans unless I wanted to buy all new. I had 30+ yr old fans. 2nd Hardware store said the same thing. If you want fans, go to Ankeny. Ankeny knew exactly what I needed, that they were still available, ordered them, and they arrived before they said they would. VERY knowledgeable on electrical fans and motors. There may be a short line as they give their full attention to whoever is next at the counter for as long as is needed to answer questions to your satisfaction.

Buyer beware! I decided to shop local and paid for it. I needed to replace an old thermostat and was unaware that I needed a millivolt thermostat. After some discussion, I ended up purchasing a Honeywell CT87K for $49.94 which by the way is $26.27 higher than if I had purchased the same thermostat from Home Depot and $20 more than if I had purchased it from Ace Hardware or from Honeywell Directly! After getting it home and installing it, the thermostat did not work. I called Honeywell, and they informed me that I needed a different kind of thermostat. I called Ankeny Hardware, told them the issue, and they were very helpful in finding me a replacement; a White-Rodgers M30 which I believe they sell for $29.99. By the way, Home Depot sells it for $18.42.I then asked Patrick about the return and he promptly told me that they do not return electrical items, as is stated clearly on their hand-written receipts.Do your research, know exactly what you need, and how much you should expect to pay for it before heading over to Ankeny Hardware, because the moral of this story is If you want to get over-charged for non-returnable electrical items, then go see the helpful folks at Ankeny Hardware. Otherwise, head over to Home Depot, Ace Hardware or some other chain that understands the concept of customer service.

I bought a portable AC at Ankeny on Saturday. I could tell when I got there that they were exhausted, and way busier than usual. They were still very friendly and informative, and actually HAD AN AC IN STOCK. I left my debit card there like a moron, but they kept it safe for me until I was able to claim it this afternoon. Overall, it was a great experience (leaving my card behind was my own damn fault).I really appreciate that they were open on a Saturday, and were friendly despite being visibly exhausted. Now Im going to take to social media to post a bunch of pictures of myself hanging out comfortably in my living room with my new air conditioning unit. My friends and family will be thrown into a jealous rage, and that wouldnt have been possible without you guys. :) A+ 10/10

Called looking for an AC unit yesterday, which they said they had in stock. Awesome! However I forgot to ask about size and price, so I called back and the immediate response I got was We have AC units in stock, just come down., in a very short voice. I then asked the price and was given a range $150-400. OK.So I came down, walked in overhearing the two guys commenting rudely about all the phone calls they have been getting about AC units. Feeling embarrassed and annoyed, since I was one of those folks who had just called, I asked to purchase their $150 unit...Were out of stock. OK.I really want to support our local businesses, they were the only store in town with AC in stock, which is awesome for them, but their customer service was horrible and then rush me off the phone with a quote for something you dont even have in stock was just annoying.

These guys saved my butt. I’m a homeowner and do it yourselfer. I needed a complete new motherboard for my furnace. After being quoted $500-$1000 to have an HVAC guy replace it, I decided to give it a go myself. These guys had the part in stock, definitely a little more expensive than I could have bought it off amazon for, but I didn’t have to wait a week so it was definitely worth the cost. The gentleman was very helpful. All of the other local HVAC supply houses would not sell to anyone without a contractors license, and this place sells to retail customers without question. Will definitely go back when I need more HVAC parts.

I bought an igniter for my furnace on December 24th. The salesmen was friendly when they were selling me the igniter. I bought it took home, installed it, it only served me for one day, before it quit on me. I called back but there was no answer due to the holiday, I called another number and I was able to talk to someone. That person told me there was no warranty on electrical part and the part I bought is only warranty if I was a certifed installer, but the salesmas didnt tell me that when I made purchased. He also told me that ankeny hardware was the ONLY store that carry part for my furnace. I went out and bought another one from VinJ & son, installed it and it still works great. I will not recomend this first store, ankeny hardware, instead go to VinJ&son. They sell higher quality goods that is worth your time and money.

I have had great experiences here, and I have also had some sllllllooooowwwww ones. The pros definitely outweigh the cons with these guys.Pros: Friendly and knowledgable staff, great high quality product selection, Locally owned, Close to my apartment, love the clustered layout... you can find what you need but may stumble upon other things in the meantime.Con: only one con: slowest place in the world if you buy something with a debit/credit card. I mean, seriously guys, you need to get a serious inventory system happening; you should be checking folks out in less than 4-5 minutes, but ive stood in a line (multiple times) for 15+ minutes with 1-2 people actually ahead of me. Hire someone who gets the inventory/customer service flow and youll kick ass:Just get a modern inventory system, then youd be awesome. Still a 5 star rating, just hoping youll get that customer purchasing system modernized.
