Really nice staff that helped us find the section we were looking for. Their YA section is not that big, but they have some good variety. More single novels than series. We found some good books and we headed to Love Park to read in the sun. It was great!
I’m pretty disappointed to leave this review because I loved this store before the pandemic. I came into the city explicitly to patronize this bookstore and hang out at the coffee shop. I saw the no bathroom sign. No worries, I found somewhere else. There was limited stock for the books on writing. Okay cool, I’ll check out other books. But after I bought my drink, I was scolded by the barista for wanting to use my computer to do some work. Apparently this table is to be saved for patrons who are chatting. There is no one else in here. She made me move tables and told me I only have an hour to sit. What the heck? Long story short, shop online. The in-person experience isn’t worth it right now.
I’ve bought a few books here and quite a few coffees. It’s a cute little place. Small selection; however, I’d prefer shopping at smaller bookstores. However, yesterday was the end for me. I picked out a book but needed to use the restroom before making my purchase. When I asked if I could use the restroom I was sharply denied. I’d rather not patronize larger chains, but that’s what I ended up doing. I was able to find the same book down the street where nobody stopped me from using the restroom first.
Erin was incredible, she was extremely kind and compassionate over the phone and extremely helpful. I cant wait to visit this bookstore in person!
This is an awesome book store with a good variety of books to choose from. The staff is wonderful at ordering special requests. Oh and when I returned they greeted me by remembering my name. Wow how cool is that ?!?!
I had an amazing experience! The staff were so nice and they had exactly the book I was looking for. When I went in there I found a book that I had never heard of before and it is now my favorite book. 10/10 would 100% recommend.
Well. That was the worst cafe experience of my life.Very rude over the phone when asking if their cafe offered food. Ruder in person when asking for said food. Mocha latte was 95% foam, 5% chocolate syrup and 0% coffee.Very nice environment and would be a great place to hang out if the staff and quality of service was better.
An interesting book store. While I love how unique the architecture and ambience is, I wouldnt come here hoping to buy a specific book. I understand they can print books on demand, but I would think they would have more books on their shelves. Perhaps its because of covid that this is an issue though, and I do hope to visit again in the future. Their shelves were maybe 50% full. I was trying to buy a new YA book thats from a best selling artist, just came out the day before and it wasnt here even though their website said usually in stock. Besides that, its a breathtaking store and their coffee shop looked great.
A classic small bookstore with its own legacy, nicely curated displays, and heavily stocked with recent releases and currently popular classics - but not much else. The changing sign was honestly my favorite part of the store.
Absolutely love this shop. My fiancee and I visit every time we are in the city. I actually proposed to her here, the manager shut down the top floor for me so I could give her her dream proposal.
Call it bougie all day, and youre not wrong--it is still a charming spot, despite the higher price tag for a café. I finally ventured in here in the lead up to the holidays--so it was pretty packed. Next time I stop by, there will hopefully be more room to unwind and collect ones self. Pastries from Metropolitan bakery and another vendor--decent coffee, too. Pick this over Starbucks, spenders.
Nice enough bookstore, but there are plenty of great local bookstores in Philly that don’t require you to leave a backpack at the desk. I’m sorry that some people steal books, but don’t treat all your customers like thieves because of those few.Check out Brickbat Books or Molly’s.
Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Great selection.
BEST bookstore in Philly. The exact ambiance you look for in a bookstore.
A very comfortable space to spend time in the heart of Rittenhouse, a happy escape from the hustle and bustle of the City of Brotherly Love. Shakespeare & Co provides a venue with a pleasant ambience to spend quality time either to relax or read. They provide a decent number of beverage, snack and dessert options. I feel they could refine their choice of music to create a more Shakespearean era vibe to enable that theme and perhaps add a few patisserie inspired options (pastries, etc?) for a richer experience. Overall, this is a place worthy of 4.5 stars and your visit on any time and type of day!
I dont know how Ive never been to this shop before but Im so happy I walked in. The store itself is gorgeous, two levels and a coffee shop. It looks like pre-covid you could sit and enjoy your drink while you read, but now everything is to go. The staff are friendly and helpful. And most importantly they have a fantastic selection of books. I had to stop myself from buying everything I picked up.
Love this little gem! Super helpful staff and super convenient place.
Usually dont leave reviews but I had a great experience at Shakespeare & Co. Awesome cafe to pop into, grab coffee and look around at books. Can get busy on the weekends if youre looking to sit down and do work, but not terrible. Staff was so helpful and patient. Iced oat milk latte was awesome! Great vibes in this place.
A neat store with well defined sections. An especially good cafe - perfect place to pick up a treat to have while you pursuing your new reading materials.
A really nice bookstore and cafe located in Center City. Shakespeare & Co carries a wide selection of popular mainstream titles as well as top local picks and self published works. The cafe space offers tables where you can work and enjoy a cup of coffee and a sandwich or other treat in a comfortable, creative atmosphere.
I always try my best to support indie bookstores — whenever there’s a book they don’t carry, it’s such a pleasure to give them a call and without an issue, my book comes in no later than a week and I always get a phone call. They have a lovely selection of books that is connected to a coffee bar that gets filled sometimes but there’s also an upstairs that I haven’t yet explored much but will. This bookshop is a lovely addition to Rittenhouse and in so happy to be a client!
This is a nice intimate spot downtown. The staff is friendly and efficient. Pastries are nice. I wish there was more seating. It is a small space that fills up fast with people and their laptops. Book accessories could be cheaper. Thats the only downside.
This bookstore is fantastic. We walked by a while back and put it on our list of places we had to spend some time in. Close friends highly recommended it, and they were right. We interacted with several of the staff and they were all immensely kind, friendly, and knowledgeable - throughout the store, at the cash register, and at the café register as well. Every single experience here was perfect, and they have filled that space with the very best people and books the world has to offer. Such a great collection of books and gifts too!
The staffs are so helpful in my inquiry. And the store has a superb ambience.
Has very good collection of books. The place is very small, so finding space could be an issue. Commend the owners for creating a nice ambience in such a small space.
The printing press in the main room sets the tone for a very chic, influenced by its Parisian sister, vibe. The store itself isnt particularly large since half the main floor is a cafe but nonetheless it seems like a popular spot for people of all ages and persuasions to pop in for a chat, work, or chill hang.
Small, cozy independent book shop with a decent cafe. Maybe a little too small -- it can get pretty crowded at busy times, and the cafe and book-making machine takes up a lot of space. Still, its nice to support an indie.
Nice little bookstore. Comfy vibe.
Very reasonably-priced cafe in a bookstore inwith loft space for literary events. Happy to have attended Steven Reas book signing there. L
The first franchise store of the historically significant Paris publisher.I was a bit disappointed in the place to be honest. It felt very hip and modern. The book selection was pretty main-stay run-of-the-mill. The environment was open and sleek. Pretty much the opposite of the cramped little musty shop in France - which is full of old obscure books upstairs.
Excellent concept, flawless execution.
Cute little book shop to sit down and read, or study for an exam. Seats are limited though so best to go when theyre not so busy if youre looking for a place to sit and work. Unrelated to the bookstore atmosphere, their restroom is one of the best public restrooms Ive been in so far, just as a side note. Staff is friendly and helpful!
Met a friend here for coffee. Very interesting atmosphere and a great selection of books. I thought that the coffee was delicious
Exceeded all expectations, great book selection that is organized really nicely. Easy to find anything youre looking for, the staff is phenomenal as well. Great place to sit and read or get some work done. Just make sure you have a charge on your laptop, plugs upstairs are limited.
I loved the Espresso Machine that made custom designs of classic book covers! I didn’t customize my own, but I bought one that was designed and printed in the store! I didn’t try the cafe but I really want to, so hopefully I get to go again!
Loved the selection of books.Friendly staff and great coffee. Not the best spot for quiet reading, but definitely to relax, chill around and get some work done.
Great helpful staff
Erik Larsson book on Wiston Churchill in the store window brought me in, and they had a signed first edition. I really liked the store. Joined the free club because, why not?
A great place for performances, or just to grab a cup of coffee and a book. The staff was accommodating. Parking is difficult, but its worth it.
Was so excited when I heard this place was opening, and after just having gone the other day with a friend, can confirm it is WONDERFUL. It was bit busy when we popped in, but great selection of books and book related goodies. (Bookmarks, cool pens, awesome notebooks, etc) We spent some time in the cafe too and UNF. The coffee was so good! Cant wait to go back again.
Well designed space. I love the mezzanine and the soft dim lighting. I like that they have outlets for doing work on a laptop. The reason why I left out a star is because their food/snacks are super expensive which makes me refrain from getting anything besides a beverage. Also, the first time I came here in the summer, the older woman who works there made my iced coffee. She put too much ice in it and I asked if she could give me less ice and more of the coffee. She declined by saying its their policy and the way they do things where they can only pour a certain amount. Felt like they were being cheap even though they make a huge profit off their sales. That rubbed me the wrong way.
Really impressed with this place! Great atmosphere, amazing pastries, decent coffee, and good music! Much quieter than other options close by and Ill definitely be back!
Nicest baristas at the coffee counter that Ive EVER come across. Staff is nice in bookstore as well. Really pleasant place to read, buy, or drink/eat. Cleanest bathroom in Center City. Oops! Shouldnt have said that, now EVERYBODYll want to use it. 🤔
This book store is cozy and lovely.I wish its business is sustainable so that customers like me could enjoy spending time.
Beautiful store and cafe. They have amazing cafe drinks. They printing press they have is really cool. Wonderful okay to stop.
Wonderful bookstore. You should definitely buy your next book there instead of that Barnes & Noble.
Very nice place. Weather your an advid reader or not. Very quaint and personal. Has a little cafe in the front. Nice place to unwind.
I enjoyed the hot apple cider and watching books being made instantly within an hour you can be an author or two phenomenal experience
Great vibe and good people
I was here at their soft-opening. The owner was real nice. He showed us the printing press and everything. Also theirbselection of books is just amazing. If I lived closer I would go here everyday.
Loved watching the machine print and Bind Books while having a nice lunch there
This a great book store to hang out, order coffee and pick up a good book. Its cozy with a friendly staff
The store was so cozy and clean! I came close to their closing time but still enjoyed my time there. The atmosphere is just what youd expect for a place that doubles as a cafe&bookshop, quiet and chill! I ordered an iced lavender matcha drink and it had a very pleasant, lightly sweet flavor. Definitely a drink Id order again in the warmer months! The barista who made my drink was very nice as well. All around a good experience!
Just walked through on our way to the park. Needed to drag ourselves out. Very cool spot to do some work, read, and grab a quick bite.
Cute as heck. Little bit cramped inside but many would call it cozy.
Really nice cafe/bookshop with excellent vibes, good selection of drinks and an expansive choice of books. Perfect place to buy a book then grab a coffee and hang out having a read.
Its great to have options! Another great book shop with books to browse and a great coffee bar to hang out. Also, books printed on demand!
Great selection of books, as well as drink items on the cafe menu. The vibe is definitely there. Was a little crowded but nonetheless would recommend.
Awesome/cozy book store! Great selection
NYC chain that recently opened up a Philly location. Fantastic book store that features print on demand books, a good selection with a nice aesthetic, decent coffee and two floors with spaces to work at. But its popular and gets crowded quickly so finding a seat can be tough.
Very peaceful, cleanly, awesome staff, good books thsy also have the occasional event.
OMG Just what I was looking for, great cup of tea and read a book, I found a great book, We need this in whiting nj all of us 55 and older would really appreciate this!
Friendly, cozy and inviting place to buy a book and enjoy something from the cafe in front. An extraordinary, fine addition to the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood!
Lovely place to wait for a while. The coffee was kind of weak and bland, but I didnt have any other coffee in Philly to compare it to, maybe its a regional thing.
Great coffee shop lots of choices, nice atmosphere. I guess you can print books as well? Thats pretty neat.
Majority of the store is cafe but the atmosphere is really nice and they have good books stocked on the shelves. It also sounds like if you want to self publish a book they will help you
This is what a bookstore should be like. Peaceful spot with great coffee and an incredibly personable staff. A hidden gem.
This is a cute store and the employees are very nice and helpful, They dont have the best selection due to their size but they seem to always keep best seller in stock and are always happy to order a book for you.
Was waiting for this place to open. Was about what I expected. Smallish space and Middlebrow book selection, but balanced by cafe and print on demand capabilities. Glad to see another book store in any case.
Awesome spot, great books, and atmosphere. But the prices could be lower for sure..
Very cute and would be wonderful but since its still new EVERYONE is in there! So since its kinda small it makes it seem crowded.😩 Ill wait till the hype dies down a bit and try again!
Great selection of interesting books, not just bestsellers.
Local bookstore with a nice selection and friendly staff.
This was my favorite café in PA . The ambiance is super chill and food is good. But mostly this is a great spot to work all afternoon on your laptop, to discover new books, and occasionally attend one of their events in the patio.
Such a beautiful bookstore. Grab a coffee and a book and read at the Mezzanine Level to look over the shop.
Interesting setting. Nice book selection
Nice cozy place for enjoying books, gód coffee and a bite😊
Nice, clean space with a welcoming vibe. Terrible cup of coffee.
Nice place to study and grab some ok coffee and muffines and cakes.
It seems to have a pretty small selection. The coffee shop is nice but I think it takes up space for more books.
Great place for true book lovers.
Awesome book store with books on demand printing on premises. Cafe and tables are always crowded, so I is hard to find a place to sit with a book or coffee.
Wonderful bookstore. Sweet little cafe.
Very kind, considerate staff and great coffee to boot. Their printing press is really an experience to watch and the books are reasonably priced.
The quality if mercy is not strained...It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven...
My reading spot in philly and the best amandine tart ever!!
A small and inviting cafe/bookstore with a limited, curated selection of books and stationary
Nice quiet spot to hide from the noise and heat while reading poetry.
Quaint little bookshop, with a cafe with some nice pastries and coffees, nice selection of books and a book printing machine.
Great food and service.
