My husband and I were visiting different areas in New Hampshire and found the small town of Peterborough. We are always on the lookout for good bookstores and the Toadstool Bookshop certainly met our expectations! It has a wonderful variety of books, new and used. We spent some time roaming happily through the shelves, and would certainly like to go back if we are in the area. Happy reading!

I felt like I had gone back in time. This bookstore is pretty big and has a little bit of everything, and including a large used book room with model airplanes (and more) on the ceiling. Lots of models. Lots and lots. The cafe was closed (Sunday?) which made me sad, but I got over it. Could have stayed there for hours, but I would have left with way too many books to take on the plane back to NC.

Great selection! Tons of really nice used books. Art books galore even in the used section... and in really good shape. Prices ok. If you are from out of the area, please know that the nearby eateries offer restroom facilities but at this bookstore, you will have a porta-potty as your only option for using the bathroom. I really needed to use the restroom and was directed to the outhouse porta-potty. DISGUSTING!!!!!! Poop caked all over the rear portion of the toilet seat. Flies swarming. I gagged and nearly vomited as I fled. The second porta-potty was only marginally better, with less fecal mounding on the seat but tons of trash and other debris shoved in what was probably the urinal feature. I cant confirm that because I was too busy trying not to retch in public. I hurried to the little diner across the street/ thoroughfare and God bless the woman who directed me to that sites restroom. I used it and planted money in her palm as I exited the establishment. I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine that the staff of the bookstore or the little cafe in the corner of it is required to use the sh*thole posing as a restroom. Im offended that nothing better was offered to customers. I did offer feedback at the cashier station and the employee began her rebuttal with I am SO tired of hearing about this from customers...! I replied with then DO something about it! Petition your own council for something better! And I thought ... or ( gasp!) allow patrons to relieve themselves in the same place you do!!! My rating is based on the stores selection. If I factored in the restroom situation, this place would have max two stars.

I had a credit to the bookstore in Peterborough.A recent move without being able to redeem my credit lead me to contract the store in Peterborough. I called the store and spoke with Eric. He could not have been more helpful. Through several phone calls, I placed an order and have since received the books.Eric was so helpful and made the entire process so easy. Thanks you, Eric!!!

Holly and Willard came through for me HUGE on a Valentine’s Gift. It was toward the end of business, on a Friday no less. Holly found a couple of books I’d asked about and Willard made sure they were received by my valentine that day. I live halfway across the continent and found them by chance on Google Maps in Peterborough, where my Valentine works...after another company dropped the ball on the gift I had ordered 3 weeks ago. They could easily have said they weren’t able to help me with no sweat off their backs. It was an amazing combination of customer service and kindness which I won’t soon forget.

Just what you want a Bookshop to be. Great selection, great place to dine right on the premises.A music section and a used book section. A secret added attraction to the used section is hundreds upon hundreds of model aircraft hanging from the ceiling. This alone, makes this place well worth a visit!Knowledgeable and helpful staff.

The Toadstool is a small chain of locally owned bookstores. It has one of the best used book selections Ive ever seen and a fantastic new section. It has a really good local section and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There is a decent selection of music, comic books etc. On site is a nice Cafe with good food and coffee drinks. The store seems like a normal mom and pop bookstore, until you discover the used book room. I have been trying to find Legacy Star Wars books, which are tough to come by nowadays. They have almost completed my collection at a great value! I always seem to find books here, both new and used, that are really hard to find elsewhere. The people here are always super friendly and clearly love what they do. Id highly recommend this store to anyone who is looking for new or used books.

Although I was sad to see the Milford location close, and I look forward to the Nashua store to open, I wanted to take advantage of some very limited free time on this visit to New Hampshire to stop at The Toadstool Bookstore. I enjoyed a beautiful drive to Peterborough, which added pleasure to my morning. As always, the staff is knowledgeable and professional, and quick with suggestions. This store has titles on every subject and point of view. An interesting used book section allowed for even more varied perusal. Whether you are a local resident or you are just passing through the quaint town of Peterborough, avail yourself the pleasure of a visit to the Toadstool Bookstore. Youll be pleased you did.

Holly, Willard and the rest of the staff provide THE BEST service in the world. Hang out and read, browse aisles of books, calendars, and dont forget the notes cards and other cool gift stuffs. The used books section is brilliant for history and art buffs, travel, military and more than I can absorb in one visit. After browsing, head over to Aesops tables for a bowl of artichoke bisque or a perfect scone.

The Toadstool Bookshop in Peterborough is a long time favorite. It is a worthy survivor against the online options. Even though it is a bit of a drive for us it is our favorite of the three locations. Keene is just way too far for us and though the Milford location is very nice its used book section is way too small compared to Peterborough, which also has other nice shops and restaurants that give that nice small town Main Street vibe.
