Best comic store in Kansas! The owner was knowledgeable and friendly. When I am in the area, it will be my first stop. I enjoyed going though the stacks of boxes to seek out older titles as well as looking over some of the new releases on the wall. Ny only regret was that I didnt have enough time to finish going through the collection of books.

I came to this store because I was looking for a local comic shop. I had tried several in the metro and was neither disappointed or overly pleased by any of them. Then I found Pop Culture. The store itself is well kept. Finding the new releases is easy. But what really made me love this place is the service. I developed a true friendship with the owner Sid as well as Adam. They both can talk about the majority of the comics coming out and are responsible for my continues interest in comics. Some of the best stories Ive read came by their recommendations. Sometimes I just go into the store to talk to whichever one is there. If you check my review history you will see that I dont review places. I read reviews but dont leave them. I made an exception on this case because of how much this store has come to matter to me.Dont believe the complaints about the service here. Ive never had a bad experience after going on multiple times. Id be willing to bet money the the majority are from competing shops that cant compete fairly.

I wanted to update my review. Straight up 5 stars arent enough to express how much I love this store. I first went in about a year ago. I had read comics as a kid and young teen but had been away from comics for a while. Sid was super friendly to me that day and helped me find the trade book ks I was looking for. New 52 Batman volumes 1 - 3. At first I visited the shop monthly to pick up a few books. During this time I built a great relationship with Sid and Adam. They got to know me and began recommending books they thought I would be interested in. Now I go every Wednesday to get my weekly pull list. Its the highlight of my week most weeks. The shop itself is laid out very well and is in great condition. I recommend this store to any comic fan, people who are interested in popular culture, and really anyone with a pulse.

Ive had some decent experiences here but Im honestly not sure how this shop stays in business or gets new customers- other than the fact that comics are wonderful. I dont know if the owner is independently wealthy or what but he does not treat most people that come in with kindness or interest. Not every experience here was bad but the bar for a business that is so service-oriented and customer facing should be much higher than that.**I would be overjoyed to alter this review to a 5-star rating if things got demonstrably better.**

This a five-star comic shop. Its easily cooler than a comic shop needs (maybe deserves) to be. They have a healthy dose of indie books mixed with all the mainstream titles that you are looking for and will guide you to something of your liking should you ask. Another nice touch is that if they dont like a book, they will let you know and special order it for you. How novel is that?

Ive been stopping in every week (minus holidays) for last last couple months had have been fairly impressed with the story. I can see how the guy who runs the place could be perceived as rude, but Ive always seen him as more terse than rude. When Ive had questions hes been very helpful and he even started to recognize me after a few regular visits. To be honest, it was their punch card program that kept me coming back in but Im glad that I did. The shop is nice, well put together, easy to navigate, and while its a bit cramped I do like that in a comic shop.To address some of the things mentioned in other comments: The shop has been clean every time Ive been there. They have always given me a bag. They have ran transactions for less than $5, I was informed they dont like to do it because of charge fees but I had an odd circumstance. I wouldnt expect transactions under $5 but they werent unreasonable about it. Ive never been scolded or spoken roughly to. Ive never been told to not touch anything. Ive seen both women and children in the store without incident. And yes, their hours are wonky but welcome to a dealing with a niche store.

This store is wonderful if you are looking for an incredible selection of independent publishers. The selection is unparalleled in the Kansas City area. Also, Pop Culture has a revolving selection of variant covers.Pop Culture makes good use of their small space. Their shelves are always full of recent issues in both independent and big name publishers. Has a smaller selection of bagged and boarded back issues. Also, there is a decent sized table of discounted issues (some recent, so older, so Ive never even heard of). Small selection of trades and other graphic novels.Pop Culture also has an interesting collection of action figures and cards (like pop culture ;) not baseball). The guys behind the counter crack me up. They guys are friendly, especially if you show youre not the to mess up their merchandise.I can understand peoples frustration with not being able to purchase less than $5 on a credit card (this has happened to me a few times), but I try to look from the merchants side. The fees charged for using credit cards are outrageous. There is a least one other store comic book store in the K.C. area that does this, not to mention a bunch of other vendors.I give this store five stars with the understanding of their having a wonderful selection of recent issues and their selection of independent publishers.

Let me start by saying that i rarely write reviews about anything, so I am not sure if my review follows the reviews format or not. I am a comic book collector. I have been doing so for many years. When i moved to OP, i looked for a comic shop close to me, and this one was less than 5 mins away. When i first went there, i liked the way the shop was set up. They have a lot of everything. That sums the good. The bad is mainly, and just like what everybody said before me, the guy who works there on weekdays and Saturdays, Syd, lacks the most basic customer relationship skills and knowledge. everything annoys him. if you breath it annoys him. If you bring your kid, who is a teenager by the way, and buys comics, it annoys him. My only impression of him is that some evil organization, like Hydra or the Hand, has one of his family members as a hostage, and they are forcing him to work there, thus the attitude. Also, this is the first comic shop I have seen in my life where there is no comic culture alive in the shop. Syd doesnt read comics, or doesnt care. There are no comic fans lurking around talking about comics at all. Nothing is his fault. Everything is the customers fault in ordering online, even though he was just complaining about the online system a few weeks ago. i can go on and on and on. Oh, and they rarely have the back issues you want. I regret every single penny i spent there. My recommendation is to find another comic shop somewhere else. I found Elite comic which got much better reviews than this one. I will visit them soon.

Good wide selection of comics and graphic novels as well as action figures, statues, and paraphernalia man behind the counter was helpful but a bit rough around the edges for example I believe the gruffness the people speak of is his protectiveness of his product of course hes not going to appreciate your kid sucking on a sucker, running around with an ice cream cone etc, arguing with him or not putting the comics back where you found them if you change your mind but me and my girlfriend have been there several times and he seems okay with you if you make purchases or are respectful and if you come in enough for him to recognize you I myself felt he was grumpy my first couple of times but eventually if youre not doing anything obnoxious then he is decent

To the owner commenting back. You arent doing yourself much good with the responses. Some of these are right, you are pretty moody and can be short with people. You are usually okay with me, but Ive been there, and it wasnt busy, and you seem to just get upset with certain people. I always kind of wondered what your problem was. You told my daughter what comics she should be looking at, but that isnt really your place to say. She can look at whatever damn comics she thinks are cool. But, you have always been very sweet to her besides that. So, maybe you should think about what people are saying here. Because there is obviously a communication issue, and they are customers. You may not give a crap and thats cool, I respect that. But, you arent spreading much comic love and appreciation for new readers that may be anxious and uncertain. Probably just loosing life-timers. And that is sort of sad.

An instant unwelcoming feeling the moment I walked into this shop. This shop displayed horrible customer service. I was not greeted or acknowledged during my visit to this establishment. The employee or store owner ( whichever he was ) talked to the other patrons (regulars I assume) in the store, and simply did not express any interest to receive my business. I have never experienced going into a comic book store in which the employee/owner deliberately ignores you during the entire duration of your visit and shows no appreciation for your potential business. The sad part about my experience is that I actually found a couple books I was looking for and left them on the shelves due to their lack of customer service experience.UPDATE:Based on the store owners response to my review, it appears that I was not inaccurate about my customer service experience with this establishment . I would like to say that I do not have any problems changing my review if I was to ever re-visit your store and have a positive outcome. A business owners response to a negative review should be a response of humility, sincerity and resolution, not a response with a combative tone.

First off lets start with the good. The hours are fine and cover at least a portion of every day where you can make it in. Lunch, after work, etc. FIVE STARS.The stock levels are great and there are usually copies of whatever I need. The range of titles is FANTASTIC, practically every comic printed I could want seems to be available without special ordering. FIVE STARSThe range of comic related items is pretty good too. Statues, glasses, shirts, and more can all be found on the shelves. FIVE STARS.The downsides of the store? Not a lot of back issues. Not a lot of stores like to keep a huge backstock piled up so thats ok. THREE STARS.UPDATE: The store is under new ownership and the previous person who was there that consistently created bad experiences is gone, so Ive updated the review as the previous rating was unfair to the new owner/staff. It was good they reached out and reminded me this review existed so that I could update it. Ive been back several times recently and the shop is excellent.

So, I was a bit bummed out to read some of these reviews. I have been coming to PCC for about a year now. I came back to comics after a 20 year break because of the reintroduction of the Valiant Universe, which was something that really captured my imagination in my youth.Pop Culture Comix and Sid have been a really great way for me to come back into comics in the modern era. Sid walked me through the comixology site, how to create a pull list, and always has suggestions and comments for me on all the books Im reading.Im an avid customer. I have over 30 books I pull every single month and buy trade paperbacks on top of that so I speak with some authority as to what the customer service and atmosphere is like at this store. In a word: awesome. People always have axes to grind and post anonymous comments. Thats part of why I like to use my real name, but its also because as a small business owner I dont like it when people dont use a name or leave a number to give the small business a chance to respond. Its not fair.I cant speak to those other situations but I can say in my year at this store (and I am in every single week, at least once a week, unless Im on vacation) Ive had top class service from this top class establishment.

Due to an error with my usual shop here in Lawrence they did not have any batman 21 lenticulars that came out today. I called ahead of time to make sure they had copies available and was told that they still had plenty for sale. After driving forty five minutes to grab this book for myself and a few friends I arrived to find several copies. I grabbed the amount needed to cover us all went to the counter and was promptly told I could only purchase one copy. I explained the situation to the worker who I presume was the owner. That I had made the drive under the pretense that I could get as many as I needed. I begged for even just one more copy to give my best friend. He would not let me have any more than the one. I understand that other people would like a copy too. That is the whole point of regular customers having a pull list any that are not reserved left out for sale should be on a first come first serve basis. If I wanted to buy every copy of a less popular book they would have surely let me do so. I dont see the distinction and arbitrary rules for purchase on things that are more popular. I dont understand why I was not informed of a purchase limit prior to arriving at the store. I dont believe Ill ever be going back

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! ! ! ! ! !DONT EVER SHOP AT THIS COMIC SHOP ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !I used to be a long time customer at this comic book shop, but just days after comicon my friend suggested we hit most all of the comic stores in the metro, so we did. This ended up being at the end of our list and I had bragged on the owner before getting there, BOY WAS I EVER WRONG ABOUT THIS GUY!!!The owner was VERY dismissive to BOTH of us, but when a young lady walked in he was VERY attentive to her, looking up comic titles etc.(Seems the owner Sid is ONLY polite to regular customers whom have ALREADY lined his pockets)I asked about an origin book and all he could say was I dont know...Then my friend asked about a figure, to which the owner berated him because it was only sold in a set and when my friend asked him what the price would be for that figure if he sold it singularly all he could say was I dont know the price. As other customers cleared out, he started becoming more crass and used A LOT of profanities (dont take your kids here!).Finally as Im checking out w/my purchases, Im looking at the OVER-PRICED bobbles at the desk. The owner actually accuses me of stealing one of his $4 ($1.25 at other comic shops) items that was on my person from THE MOMENT I ENTERED HIS STORE.The owner picks up his remote for his security footage and starts rewinding and trying to prove Im a THIEF! RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! The nerve of this guy!?!?I shouldnt of spent a DIME after that type of RUDE TREATMENT!But to prove him wrong about me I finished out my purchase and left the store.I will NEVER shop from this guy AGAIN and neither should you...Im still sorely disappointed in this guy as he was the closest comic shop I had, but I guess Ill just have to drive a little further, so I can shop at a DECENT PRICE, not get RIPPED OFF, and then accused of doing so to him.Dont make the mistake of giving this guy the time of day, keep driving when you see the sign... Unless you like to be treated rudely and accused of shoplifting while browsing, then THIS is YOUR store.

Pop Culture used to be my favorite comic shop in Johnson County. “Used to” being the key words. I came here for Free Comic Book Day with a friend of mine, and there were signs everywhere for 50% off on back issue comics, 30% off graphic novels, 30% off action figures, and select “50 cent comics”. We spent over an hour in the store picking out single issue comics from anywhere between six months to two years old, which at every other comic shop I’ve ever been to would be considered, “back issue”. We spent over an additional hour just waiting to check out, and the gentleman at the register asked me for my email address SEVEN TIMES before he finally got it right, thus holding up the line even further. And he proceeded to refuse to give us the 50% off for the back issues that we had spent so much time picking out, even though I pointed directly to the sign that was RIGHT WHERE I had gotten the back issues from. He got angry at me, as well as my friend. We later went to Clint’s Comics on the Missouri side and told them about what happened here, and they gave us 50% off of our entire purchase, as well as 10 free comic books to compensate for our bad experience at Pop Culture. That is real customer service. Needless to say, I will be taking my business elsewhere from Pop Culture from now on.

They have DC Marvel, IDW, Darkhorse, Archie and more.So many comics to choose from and they even have a kids section in the back for stuff like Sonic the Hedghog, My Little, Pony and more. So if you like that you can get those here to besides the more popular things. They also sell all sorts of Graphic Novels and busts and figures of all kinds. They also have older issues for sale as well as a few boxs of older variant covers. They also provide a loyalty card where you buy so many comics you get one free but the best idea is to subscribe to to comics using there website and comixology. You can get a bit of a discount when you subscribe. They even sell comics supplys, bags and boards. The store also participates in Free Comic Book Day, helping to raise food for the hungry. Also has a large supply of misc comics for sale in there dollar bin, definitly worth browing. There is no food or driink allowed, but theres a sign on the front door that says that.

Pop Culture Comix has a lot of new comics and also has a wide variety of comic related items. Many back issue comics as well including boxes of bargain comics.

Like most have already reported...the owner was rude and dismissive. Ive never been in his store before and thought fcbd would be a great day to check it out. When inquiring (quite politely, I might add) about fcbd day, I was told the instructions are on the rack in quite a condescending tone. Not another two words were spoken...no suggestions made, no questions about what I usually read or if Im new to collecting. Ok...suit yourself. New customer walks in to your store...heres a chance to hook some one new and give them a reason to come back and buy stuff...you know, the thing that supports your livelihood? And the funny thing is that I spend quite a bit of money on collectables and would love to support a local business. However, I wont be supporting yours. Be rude if you want, its a free country, but not on my dollars.
