This is truly a five-star game store. I have been to many (I try to find and stop in wherever I go), and the Compleat Strategist is my favorite. They have an amazing selection - not just of the known games, but a lot of indy games. They get a lot of the Kickstarted games, so I know if I miss one - I can probably find it later here. The staff and owner are also amazing. They are always helpful - and have great suggestions. It is fun just to stand around chit-chatting about various games. In NYC - this should definitely be the go-to game store.

Amazing store. Board games, card games, tabletops, rpgs, wargames, poker sets, and more. Had a great time browsing, and this place is absolutely packed with products. I had never seen a more complete collection of merchandise than here. Seth had also provided us with a wonderfully enjoyable in-depth chat about many different hobbies.

Amazing prices on sealed MTG, vast collection of board games and other tabletop games. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Really hope they start carrying MTG singles!

It was an amazing place to go to. One of the largest selections I’ve ever seen in a store and I’ve been to hundreds of shops. The place was on the small side but the staff treated me like They had al the time in the world. Seth helped me pick out a bunch of Christmas gifts for friends and family. Larry told me about some tabletops and any events and groups that meet there. Rachel was very friendly as well.

Awesome store with just a plethora of board games, card games, and table top roleplaying games, plus the accessories for each. I really liked their collection of minis for D&D. It isnt the biggest bit they have minis Ive never seen other places. I just wish I had packed an extra bag to fit more. The employees are also nice and hold a good conversation. I love nerding out, especially with amazing strangers. Ill be back the next time Im in the city.

I also had the experience of feeling unwelcome. I asked for a board game by name and was told he never heard of it. Then I was asked how old it was. I said about 20 years and was told “we do not have anything that old.” Then I saw Munchkin and said “Munchkin is that old.” He replied “yeah Munchkin will be around forever.” Hmm. I asked about Taboo refill packs and he said they have not been able to get Taboo for a while. I asked about any refill packs for similar games and he said “we don’t sell refill packs.” I feel like the shopkeeper did not feel like being courteous at all. Never going back there again.

You should come here if you like resealed products! I was given as a gift a resealed starter set for Keyforge from my friend sold to him as new. How do I know it was resealed? Firstly it didnt have the correct plastic on the outside. Ok, it happens. Second it comes with two completely random decks which were torn open already and obviously checked and/or replaced. So yeah, great place to get random sealed product.

If you like games you will be in paradise here so many games. DnD fans magic and so many others just leave yourself time to browse you will love this place.

I use to visit this store when it was on 57th street (a few decades ago). I came across this location a few years ago with my own children and had to take a nostalgic walkthrough. They have an awesome selection of rare one-of-a-kind games, and chess sets that make great gifts. I left feeling like a little kid again, and now my kids love this store as much as I did when I was young. I love this place!

This store is amazing, its full of amazing products, I have never seen a store like this one. They basically have all you ever wanted or imagined from role games to board games, from miniatures to paints. The people that work here are super nice and very skilled in what they do, you feel at home. Awesome store, keep on going!

A dying breed all over the country but especially in New York City, even more especially in midtown, but TCS storms on! This place reminds me of one of those quirky neighborhood store fronts youd see highlighted one of those shows on local public access, but instead of it being in Brooklyn or Queens, its a half block from the Empire State Building. The aisles are narrow and the shelves are ridiculously high, but they have it all. The staff is very knowledgeable about all aspects of gaming, and the variety is overwhelming. This is a gamers paradise, assuming you like the tactile feel of tokens, dice, or cards over a game controller. The have plenty of rpg and table top war games, including modeling tools and miniature paints. They also have chess sets and poker chips. They even have the guidebooks for historic military armies, which are much more popular in Europe and hard to find here in the States. Ive been coming here for over 25 years, since I first moved to the city, and I still get a rush when I walk through the door (and for a while I worked just a block and a half away, so I was coming a few times a week.) Youll see a mix of locals and tourists, but youre both there for the same reason: the joy of friendly competition. If you are a non-video game player, I cant recommend this store enough. And if youre part of a family that is looking for something new for game night, or maybe youre trying to start a family game night, this is the place to start.

They have an IMMENSE selection of board games, and a decent selection of miniatures (the prices are quite affordable for the miniatures).They also carry a good number of rulesets for D&D and other games. Their dice selection isnt that huge and its mostly behind the counter. The store is also a little cramped which is the downside, but the people who work there seem to be friendly.

A fantastic place. Great for every level of gamer, from the first-timer to the experienced veteran. I am starting a new D&D campaign and went for a couple items. They had everything you could possibly need. And as a bonus the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, giving perfect advice for what I needed and what I might need in the near and far future.

Amazing selection, one of the best Ive ever seen. But unfortunately thats it, as far as reasons to come here goes. The staff doesnt go out of its way to help you (I browsed for a long time and absolutely no one asked me if I needed any help, I had to go out of my way to ask for the stuff I was looking for; still better than the stereotypical opinionated FLGS employee, but not great by any means), and the place is so crowded the shopping experience itself isnt that pleasant, either. But if you want something obscure (or something you could still get online, but NOW), this is the place to look for it.

Theyve got pretty much any game you could ask for, but youll probably need help finding it. The store is long and narrow, and stocked floor-to-ceiling with games. Its great to browse, but tough if youre on the hunt for something specific. Thankfully, the staff were able to help me locate exactly what I was looking for.

Its your average gaming store for all things games. These are rare and far between in manhattan. So, stop here if youre in the city and need to pick up some dice or game accessory. Dont expect pristine customer service. Its hit or miss in this place. Its almost like, since its been in its location so long, the place feels like your walking into a reformed witches lair. She seems friendly, but the witchy attitude flares up out of nowhere. Be warned!

I am rarely compelled to write reviews, but my experience with Compleat Strategist was so positive that I feel as though I have to. While my interaction with them was only digital, I couldnt be more satisfied with the level of service and downright promptness with which our purchase was handled.I ordered two games on a whim yesterday afternoon and they arrived this morning at 10am. Thats faster than Amazon. A marvel.

Love coming here! Whether its to pick up new board games to add to my collection, or to fuel a new hobby like Warhammer or Magic the Gathering, this place has it all. We came in here recently to pick up some Necromunda sets and the staff was genuinely excited and super helpful with answering our newbie questions. For any other Warhammer fans out there, they do a Warhammer Thorsdays from 4:00pm-9:00pm!

This occurred some years back. I was looking for the Dragonlance Leaves from the Inn of the Last Home and stopped by to see if they had any in stock.I was told they only had one and it was shown to me. The book looked as if it had been left behind a radiator for months and more than half the pages were discolored from some coffee or foul looking water. Out of curiosity I asked how much for it and was told full cover price.Laughed a bit too much at that and told them no thank you. Went back more recently only to see overpriced products. Havent been back since.

This game store is awesome, brings me back to my youth when these game stores were everywhere and similarly packed up to the rafters with gaming of every type certain to satisfy anyones favorite interests, get out and support your local shop, theres not many left!

During our trip to New York we got sick (family of 6!) and camped out in our hotel for almost a week to get over it. Emerging from that experience we realized we completely forgot to pack any games!Quick Google later we found this joint and off we went. Picked up a few card games and a board game that would travel well - staff were friendly and helpful. Amazing selection and expert knowledge is a winning combination in my book.

This little shop is so chockablock with games, figures, and books you will almost certainly need help finding what you want. No worries— the staff is friendly and willing to rifle through even the deepest, darkest corner of the stock room to accommodate you. They don’t carry many discontinued games, so if you’re looking for Conquest of the Empire, etc. save yourself a trip. Everything else? They have it. FYI: As a child I visited The Game Guild, TSR’s central command post in WI, and Compleat Strategist carries perhaps twice the number of D&D items.

Cool place with lot of stuff for fan of game boards

I started coming here when I was still in my teens, in the mid-80s, buying AD&D books, Champions, Microgames...the folks who worked there back then were super nice and they still are today. Its true that you could get games cheaper off the internet, but I like strolling down the aisle and getting lost in all the selections available. It is tight. But its what I love about this place. Games of all genres stacked high up to the ceiling. Yesterday, I witnessed how the staff helped a little girl buy supplies because she wanted to paint some little furniture. I hope thus place lasts forever.

Talk about selection! This place has pretty much any board game you could ever want. I also just love the smell of paper and all the strat guides and development books for various games definitely give it that gravitas. Just look past the clutter and youll be sure to find any gem you could want or need.The hours are a little restrictive but such is the case with many similar stores.

Insane selection. Overwhelming really. Id suggest having a list before you go on. And BGG open on your phone for those last minute impulse buys, which will happen.

Filled, floor to ceiling, with awesome board, card and miniature games. If those interest you, you should check it out. Beware of the price of more recent games... old ones are safer. The corridors are a bit narrow too... like no more than 2 people side by side. But their inventory is really good. Go there already.

The selection is fantastic, the staff friendly and if you don’t see something, ask for it and they can order it for you.In a world where mom and pop shops like this are going by the wayside for more online shopping this is a place to support.

This little game shop was a lot better than game shops in my area. Not only did they have a wide range of board games, but they also had an entire section of discounted board games. I chose one that looked interesting, and happened to be 50% off. I would have purchased more if I didnt have to figure out how to get them on the plane to fly back home.

Oh boy! This place is jam packed. The aisles are just wide enough for two very skinny people to slide past each other. They are not wasting any space on aisles because this place is jam packed with a fantastic, exciting, inspiring selection of everything.This is not the spacious game palace of the suburbs, this is pure new York: and a wonderful spark to the imagination.

It has an impressive stock. But its very difficult to find anything, we couldnt figure out how the store was arranged. Many of the boxes were damaged or cellophane was torn. The aisles were too small for two people to pass each other comfortably.

This place has absolutely everything you could ever need to play any tabletop game ever made (except maybe people to actually play the game with). This store is floor to ceiling games and gaming supplies! You could spend hours in here looking at all of the different options and you will definitely find some treasures. Lots of out of print and obscure games as well for those who prefer something less mainstream!

Literally packed floor to ceiling with games for every age group and interest.The thing I love about stores like this is you can get lost for hours, grabbing a box reading it and placing it back to repeat the process for the upteenth time.This to me is how board games should be brought, they need to spark an interest and on the pages of Amazon you just dont really get a sense of what youre buying, long live the board game shop.Staff are extremely helpful and for the likes of me being a tourist its always a joy to stumble through the doors just to see whats new.Also check out the reduced section some great deals on those shelves.

Excellent hobby shop, lots of stuff in their inventory of all genres, also excellent customer service. Only downside, you pay full price plus tax. But hey whenever I go to NYC, I make it a pilgrimage to go to this store which is probably the oldest board RPG hobby shop in the city and one of the oldest in the world.
