I love Gizmo! service your machine so it doesnt break! this 20 yr old singer machine fell apart during the pandemic. I was working on corsets and masks and the side handle just broke off - i was so wonderfully happy that Gizmo had survived the pandemic and was more than happy to give him my business! i paid $100 to fix the wheel - and service the machine. it works beautifully now! so happy! i considered just getting a new machine - but they dont make them to last anymore. this is a rare singer made in Italy! (bought at woolworth on 23rd st for $100 in 1996). THANK YOU SO MUCH GIZMO FOR SALVAGING MY MACHINE! IT WORKS WONDERFULLY!
He’s a very nice guy but he couldn’t fix my machine.
I love this shop. I went in there and was amazed to find an original east village shop, the kind that nyc was built by. The owner works his shop, knows everything about machines and supplies, and has really great prices. When you’re doing an art project and suddenly your sewing machine needle breaks there is nowhere else to go but Gizmo. Seriously so many stores that supply creative project items are closing to the big faceless corporations selling burgers and cheap clothes. If you’re looking for a small business to help out during this pandemic I highly recommend this place. Also amazing selection of buttons, new and vintage.
Hussein is an expert at fixing machines. Ive taken multiple machines to him over many years and always had good results. He also is happy to advise on getting a new machine.
I’m really sorry and extremely upset to write a negative review for a small business. Small businesses have such hard time. But this guy from GIZMO returned my sewing machine in the same condition that it was before, still with a scotch tape over a broken part and said that he fixed something inside and this tape is OK and it’s not necessary to fix or replace it. At home, as soon the tape got loose, the machine stopped. So, now I’m with the same problem and out of my money. When the next day I asked him what he fixed inside I did not get a clear answer. He said if I want to replace a broken part than I have to pay more. It may seem like a manipulation to make me to pay more. I do not know who gave him these good reviews. May be he can fix some small problems. Also he is good in pretending to look “nice” and ‘honest”. I do not know why I paid him and took a machine with a scotch tape. For some reason I trusted him that it can work. I was wrong. Of course, I have to blame myself too. When I brought a machine to his shop he did not give me an estimate, said that he won’t fix but replace a broken hand wheel and quickly took the machine to the back of the shop. It happen very fast. He did not give me a receipt but said do not worry he will call soon. I waited for his call for like three weeks and then called him. It took like five weeks to get my machine back. Now I see that I had to insist on a receipt and estimate. But, again, he really learned how to pretend to look “honest” and “nice”. When you carry a heavy machine for like twenty blocks you already invested in it too much and cannot just take it back. So if you cannot find another shop, make sure to ask him for a price estimate and receipt with what he is exactly going to do. It’s a big lesson for me don’t trust people like this. I paid for this lesson and now am looking for another shop to fix my sewing machine.
THE BEST!! Its a true gem hole in the wall shop in East Village. I dont know where I would be without this shop in this location! Sometimes its a pain to always go up to the garment district to buy trims or some supplies for my sewing machine so coming here is a real treat. Its like a treasure to find trimming that are vintage and are nicely organized. If you love lace, its an amazing place to shop for yardages of lace. One of the greatest part about spending time here is getting to know the owner, Hossein. He is so sweet! He really knows how to warm up a customer and understand what the customer needs. I can tell he has had this business for many years. His joy for being on 1st ave makes me understand why he is successful for his shop. If you are in need of a sewing machine, he has been always bugging me to buy one off of him but never have! Wish to know if anyone has and how it has been. I hope his business never changes! A must visit if youre in the East Village!
Omg 😱😭 the worst thing you can do is give this guy anything to fix. Instead of fixing my machine he mess it up more. He had my sewing machine for over a month and only call me back because I called him to see if it was fix and if I was coming because he was closings. He actually broke a part that wasnt broke and now I have to find some another sewing machine repair shop. If I didnt check the machine before I left I would have taken it home to find all the things wrong with my sewing machine that were before I gave it to him. He mess up my sewing machine. A simple fix is now a major problem. DONT GIVE HIM ANYTHING.
Gizmo ALWAYS does such an amazing job with tuning my machine. And adding to his amazing service.....I DISCOVERED.....HE SHARPENS SCISSORS! I also picked up some muslin. Great place. Highly recommend
I love Gizmo! I always check here first for any little thing I need. Buttons, thread, hook and eye closures, ribbons, etc. Its really a treat to stop in for the one on one service. May he be here forever!
I am so happy ! My 1970s Bernina Sewing Machine needed repair and a lot of tuning. I just picked it up and its like new ! Never been better ! Thank you !
What a nice guy. He Showed me how I was using my sewing machine wrong and why it kept jamming. His price was so affordable so I didnt need to buy a new sewing machine and now I know how to really use mine and he gave me some pointers and he was just super nice. Very simpleNot a solid supply of material but a good mix and match. It’s kinda a get what ya see kinda spot.
Great place on Earth! Hossein helped me to repaired my sewing machine today. He’s very patient and kind. Appreciate it.
I am so so happy and relieved to have found this store! The owner was so kind and patient with my frantic energy. He knew everything there is to know about my 100 year old singer machine and was able to replace its broken part on the spot! I will be bringing my other antique machines to him too! :)
This place is an absolute gem! An East Village staple for over 30 years! I got my sewing machine fixed here and the service was great!
Lots of patience and very helpful.
Ok I just left this place and decided to write a review while my amazing experience is still fresh in my mind. Im a newbie in the sewing world so I think Im lucky to have found my go to sewing supply. I definitely found everything I needed, the owner is super helpful and attentive and very knowledgeable with his suggestions. I will definitely will be coming back. The store is in the smaller size but it gives for more personalize service which I love.
Wonderful owner. Special place.
The owner is so nice and so knowledgable. I would recommend this place to any local who owns a home sewing machine and needs a good & reliable place in the city to bring when their machine is in a jam. I brought my Juki hzl-f600.
Tiny little sewing shop that has pretty much everything you could possibly need! The gentleman that owns it is very friendly and helpful if you have questions. Give him a shot before going to a bigger store!
I brought my Bernina home machine in for tuning/repairs and it was done very quickly (around a week) and resonably priced. Gizmo is great! I will definitely bring my machine back here for future maintenance, happy camper!
Cute little shop. Last one left in the neighborhood. Grateful it is still here.Owner is a lovely man and very helpful.
Im a beginner and I love this store. I was panic before going to the store since I dont know anything, I even havent got my sewing machine yet. The owner told me to practice and not give up. He also told me something about my coming machine. Did not push me to buy anything. Btw, I saw several used sewing machines in store for sale too. Wish going there earlier. ;-)
Love the guy who runs this place. I went in desperately looking for some fabric to cover up my windows which face out into blinding streetlights. He hooked it up with some black felt which works perfectly and then we talked sewing machines a bit. He knows what he does and I would definitely go to him if I ever needed repairs or had questions about my machine.
I had researched many sewing machine repair shops throughout the city before deciding to give GIZMO a shot. Not only did he never update me on my repair status, he held onto to what apparently is an un-repairable machine for over 4 weeks. I had to keep calling him for updates to which he always replied that he would call me back soon as the machine will be fixed soon. DO NOT BRING GIVE HIM YOUR BUSINESS unless you accept the fact that he will take forever and not actually do any work to repair your machine. I am extremely disappointed and will never return.
A smart professional who knows how to fix a machine. The store has great basics. Its a shame there arent more stores like this around the city and that most sewing & fabric stores are all in one neighborhood.
Gizmo was fast in fixing my home sewing machine, he also oiled it up since it really needed it.(my bad)But ended up not needing a new part thankfully and I don’t have to buy a new machine so well worth the trip.
My daughter broke all her machines needles. He was the only place open that sold replacements. All the shops in the garment district either were closed (on Saturday) or closed at 5:00. He had both standard and heavy duty needles.
Gismo is one of the oldest businesses on the lower East side. He has very loyal customers because he treats every one like family.
Was able to a new power box for a 50 year old Singer sewing machine.
The owner is super nice and doesnt try to pressure sales like fabric district shops. Great selection of notions and trims
This is a small fabric store, but package with all the things you need for sweing. Want there to find some needle threader. The owner was nice and friendly. Price is fair for most items. If you like sweing and need something special for your project, check it out.
Does not accept returns and gives the costomer an unpleasant feeling. Will not be returning.
Gizmo is the only place I trust to service my sewing machine. I own a beautiful, solid Necchi from the 60s. Last year I took it to a shop near the garment district for a tune-up and oiling. They were not skilled at working on vintage machines and actually broke the entire tension mechanism. I then did a lot of searching and was fortunate to find Hossein at Gizmo, who repaired my machine and got it working like a charm. It now runs like a brand new machine.
This is the place to go if you need anything sewing related. From machine repairs to fabric supplies. Owner is very friendly and will go out of his way to satisfy the client.
Owner was nice enough to keep his door open after 7pm so I can buy from him! Im just not used to that kind of service nowadays.
A good place for notions, buttons, elastic & thread.
Good tiny shop for all your sewing and fabric needs.
Lots of materials for your sewing needs. The owner has been there for over 25 years and is very helpful and knowledgeable.
Super helpful guy and cool little shop!
Sweet guy! He was very friendly!
I love this place!
Nifty place
