The Sweet Shop NYC is an Upper East Side gem.The shop curates some of the best treats from across New York City and the country, including ice cream, shaved ice, chocolate, hard candy, cookies, and much, much more. The best part of the store? It is run by an absolutely delightful woman named, wait for it, Kandy. She is incredibly helpful and will walk you through the various treats and delicacies the shop offers so that your sweet tooth is sure to be satisfied.Stop by for a treat and a one-of-a-kind New York experience you wont regret.
From a nearby restaurant I watched the owner berate his delivery man telling him he had no education and yelling that he was fired for coming too close to the counter. All the customers left immediately except one table that he apologized to, not for his behavior but for what he felt had to be said to the delivery man (who are the backbone of nyc). The customer simply stated you don’t need to treat people like that and the ice cream shop owner called her the c word ( C U Next Tuesday) in front of her young kids in a loud voice. I’ll never buy from this place in the future. It’s nothing special anyways. Disrespectful behavior doesn’t need to happen. Edit: I snapped pics of the man later and added them to the review. He doesn’t like women or minorities, that’s where he targets his hate.
It’s an irony that the owner of a sweet shop can be this rude and mean to people . We went to his store and were waiting in the line . He yelled at the people standing in front of us for apparently standing “less than 6 ft away” from the people ahead of them which was not the case . They were standing very well more than 6ft apart. He used abusive language and has no etiquette. We just walked away cos we don’t wanna encourage buying from ill mannered and horrible people like him . I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE . IT WILL SPOIL YOUR DAY !
I lived next to this place for three years, and a week didnt go by that I wasnt there. First and foremost, the customer service and warm conversation can not be matched. They know how to retain customers. They have an incredible selection of candy and ice cream. Dont miss out on their chocolate chip cookies! Can not recommend this pace enough. I still walk six blocks out of my way just to get my fix.
Great place to come to get sugar high! friendly service and tasty chocolates. look for that pink door!
I was going to place a delivery order for my daughters birthday since I live in NH and it looked like a cool place. I am so glad I saw the negative reviews regarding the owners behavior. There is nothing that warrants that type of behavior. Rude and disrespectful.. I hope this place gets boycotted by others that see this. I will be buying elsewhere .
The owner is so kind, personable and welcoming. My boyfriend and I stumbled across this amazing place while going to our car and even though he was closed, he opened for a quick second so we could purchase candy and wound up giving us some for free. I’ve never felt so much positivity and kindness from one place before until coming here. The Sour candy bags and Almond bark are really things that dreams are made of. The owner is definitely someone you’ll absolutely love upon meeting. There’s nothing bad I can say about this place.
The owner of the Sweet Shop swore at us using extremely vulgar language when we didn’t condone his horrible treatment of the delivery guys! His behavior and language were SO awful, completely shocking and unacceptable. He swore in front of children!! A horrible horrible man! We will never go back. This is a business who thinks it’s ok to yell, swear, insult, people.
This place is a Hidden Gem in New York City if you ever have the urge for homemade ice cream with a different Flair this is the place to be The Sweet shop NYC. Unfortunately they do not office samples but trust me I dont think youll regret your choice. Tons of candy as well for the kids or for That Sweet Tooth that needs some attention.
New to NYC and I’m pretty sure I’ll be 600 pounds knowing this place is so close to my house
Great, fun collection of candy! My son very much loved the mystery box! And If nothing else go here because the owner is a really awesome human who showed my son staying at RMH across the street a little extra kindness and love!
This place is cute, unique and delicious ice cream. Take out only
This is a welcoming coffee shop which is one block away from the house. The vibe is school student-centered and more welcoming. I should say its the local version of Starbucks with more sophisticated dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Its crowded but has a well laid out interior matched with a narrow band of patio tables. I will go back here again!
Everything I tried so far is incredibly yummy! Cookies, ice cream, candy, you name it (theyve got it)!
I recently visited with family for lunch. We ordered a variety of meals, both meat-eaters, and vegetarians. I have to say we all enjoyed our food. I finished with some coffee and a nice piece of cake and beautiful food, professional staff providing great service. The room upstairs was lovely to be able to enjoy a chat over a cuppa. Thank you!
Great sweets and candy. Large variety.
This place has a wonderful variety of treats, both homemade and bought from other companies. (The owner is awesome once you get to know him.) If you were to go there, I would recommend the shaved ice. Its a sweet treat with a generous portion that is wonderful in the summer!
Tiny store jammed from floor to the rafters with high quality candies. The sheer variety boggles your mind. Very good homemade ice cream including vegan. Father and son, who are delightfully eccentric, kind of like Damon Runyon guys
Rude owner, horrible customer service. Go if you want to be treated like garbage. And .. the ice creams are just okay, wholefoods ice cream are much better and dont give me PTSD.
Bad service the owner yelled at me and I lost 60 arena points in fortnite his name is strobex
Super high quality artisan ice cream. The owner is a very nice man and has lots of pride in his craft. He let us try their custom chocolate covered marshmallow tonight and they were really great.
This place is so great! Cant say enough good things about it. Service is above and beyond - the guy who runs it is so friendly, helpful and welcoming. Go - youll love it!
For the look of the store and the taste of the ice cream, I give this place 5 stars. But because the guy who is running it is a jerk to his employees, I give him a 1.We came in for a treat and the guy at the door was super friendly, he asked us to wait outside and handed us the menu, few minutes passed and he kindly opened the door for us to walk in. Waiting in line inside, the guy who seemed to be the manager of the store was taking orders from clients and GIVING orders to his associates in a nasty way. He thinks by adding a thank you and we appreciate you at the end of his aggressiveness will be a pleasurable experience. But trust me dude, no matter how cool your place is, fix your attitude towards the people who help you out and be truly thankful for their hard work.
Its a small shop with candy and goodies; a very cute place if you have a sweet tooth!! I wouldnt come here for the cookies though. I had the snickerdoodle cookie and it was okay. Nothing bad, but nothing special. Its a candy store so I didnt expect much, but Im glad I tried it. But if you want a good cookie, Id say go to a bakery.
Everytime I go in here the owner is warm, friendly, and humorous. A must stop if you are so much as walking bye. The lavender ice cream is to die for but you also must try the homemade cookie ice cream sandwiches. Plenty of candies and reasons to spend money. But a big part is the owner and his staff - people just dont seem to care like they do about customer service in this area anymore. Very refreshing.
Amazing place, great customer service, they really make people feel special. A true family owned business that values its customers! I’m not sure what up with the bad reviews, nothing comes free in this world so it maybe a tad pricey but the quality of service you receive here is amazing! The best ice cream I had all year!! Thank you Matthew and his family for having such a great customer service friendly place available on the upper east side.
The ice cream was amazing and they def have a great selection of nostalgic candy. The reason for 4/5 stars is that it is not stroller friendly. The owners son (who was a nice guy) asked us to bring our stroller outside (this was after carrying it a few steps into the shop) even though we were the only ones in the shop and only going to be there for a few min.
Ive found this place to be just awful. I think the owner possibly just is very moody and has frequent bad days but he is so NASTY that I am done giving it another try. They have a good selection of candy and would be nice to have a fun neighborhood shop to go to like the old days, but Id rather get candy from a bodega than this place. The big guy needs to understand that we dont care if he thinks of himself as the candy man because if hes a jerk customers will not come back.
Dirty owner and rude
If you are looking for something sweet, look no further. It is a one-stop-shop for all things great! A small store that looks for only the best in sweets (plus Mud coffee) :) One thing I love, is I dont need to over indulge (as I would love to)....an example is their mini cone of a decadent ice cream of your choice...perfect for a small but tasty treat!
Great vegan ice cream. 2 vegan flavors available. Great customer service. I wish they had more vegan chocolate and candy options though.
Ice cream cookie sandwhich is the way to go
Super rude man manning the front counter tonight - we walked in and walked out within 10 seconds because this man was THAT condescending and obnoxious. I love supporting small businesses and literally walked in the store saying “I love supporting local businesses and want to get to know my neighborhood better” but this was the worst first impression I’ve ever had
MOST AMAZING DESSERT STORE IN NEW YORK CITY! Fantastic premium and unique ice creams. Always take the owners suggestions, he has never led me wrong. Even the wackiest suggestions turn out to be the best combinations. Go here its great!
The owners son greeted us as we walked in and was simply delightful! He made that candy shop so memorable and fun. I hadn’t planned on buying anything, but I walked out with all the chocolate and incredible ice cream I could stomach. This place is a must if only for the wonderful customer service.
This is the second birthday in a row that I received a gift by way of The Sweet Shop and so far they are two for two! Last year was an incredible basket of throw back sweets (think Zebra stripe gum and Fun Dip) while this year was a large mason jar full of light and dark chocolate covered gummy bears (my absolute favorite). Thanks for all the Sweets and looking forward to seeing what next year brings!
If you have sweet tooth, this is the place to be. So many variety of old school candy. Ice cream is also available. Prices are reasonable. Service is 5 stars
Rude owner
The chocolate vegan ice cream is good but the coconut (vegan) is notI dont know if the cone is vegan, probably notOne scoop is like 3.50 so make sure you dont get two like me..
Very unprofessional maniac behind the counter in the store. My dog ate the chocolate rice krispy treat I bought in the store. I went in momentarily with the dog and asked permission to read the ingredients of the item to be aware of what my dog just ate. The guy starts shouting obscenities at the top of his lungs with a bunch of kids everywhere. To the owner of the store: courteous conversations resolve issues, not threats and obscenities. In a store that caters to children theres no need for someone with anger management issues to be screaming obscenities at the top of the lungs. Complete lack of class. Wont shop there again
This is a fantastic little hole in the wall for some of the best homemade ice-cream, cookies and other confections in town! The staff is friendly and offers customer service that is second to none in town. If you do not go get the smores sundae before you leave town, you have made a grave mistake! Dont fret the price tag, it is to die for.
The Sweet Shop is my go to place for fresh baked cookies, ice cream, and any kind of candy you could want. Matthew has always been helpful, and has fantastic customer service! I love this shop, and recommend it to anybody who likes sweets in the UES.
Amazing candy. Best candy Ive had. Matthew helped us, and he is extremely passionate about what he does.Amazing experience. Will happily be back soon!
If you want to buy overpriced candies and ice cream look no further! Want to get yelled at by the owner who scammed you? Look no further! The owner of this shop seemed very welcoming at first, and started suggesting items to add to our ice cream. Yeah he suggested about $20 worth for ONE Chinese takeout food container of terrible ice cream. A pint of old Ben and Jerry’s would be better than this “sweet” trip. Definitely my first and last time.
Went for the ice cream. The gentleman serving us was knowledgeable and made great recommendations. Loved the atmosphere and the ice cream! The candy selection was also great.
The Sweet Shop is hands down one of my favorite mom and pop businesses. Not only do they carry the highest quality chocolate, donuts, and ice cream you could ever imagine, but theyre also run and staffed by some of the sweetest (pun intended) people I have been privileged enough to meet. I highly recommend the chocolate covered gummy bears, but you cant go wrong with anything you pick up in the store. And, if you have a moment, be sure to ask them the story behind how and why they started their business.
This is the first time that Ive ever written a review on google, but my experience at this ice cream shop was so awful that I felt obliged to share it in order to spare other innocent people from getting massively ripped off. I wish I could rate a half star.Went out for ice cream tonight with high hopes for this place based on the reviews - it seems like a friendly, local favorite. The owner served us and he insisted on concocting sundaes catered to our favorite flavors. He served us two scoops each in these tiny little Chinese takeout containers (about half the size of the standard) and charged us $5.00 per scoop and $4.75 per serving of fudge. He claimed that we each had double servings of fudge, which brought our bill total to almost $40.Please try to think of the last time you have spent even $20 on a desert of any kind. Cant? Yeah thats what I thought. The owner proceeded to cause a scene in front of all of the other customers when we questioned the bill and said he has the best ice cream in NYC and prices reflect that. Sir, I would rather go to Dairy Queen.
Amazing Experience met the owner, he was knowledgeable about all of the candy in the store, treated me to some very exquisite chocolate and had the best Mango Ice Cream on the Planet... Definitely worth the time to get a taste of heaven before you get there... Check it out TODAY!
Old school candy from the good ole times (pre-gen x).... They have ice cream too. You can sit outside during the summer months on their homey chair and benches. A nice neighborhood addition.
Awesome people and delicious ice cream! I had the cotton candy marshmello flavor and it was great!!!
This place is the best. Great candy & ice cream, and wonderful service. Found this place while staying at the Ronald McDonald house across the street. All the kids here love the Sweet Shop and the employees are so good with the kids. Would give them over five stars if I could.
Amazing shop! Friendliest staff with the most delicious treats.
Fantastic place with an enormous collection of sweets, candies, and homemade desserts. Although it is very small, it almost is better because you are immersed in candies. The people who work there are super nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend it!
Not serious about food allergies. I am allergic to gluten. I used to be a regular but wont be returning because I was served a supposedly gluten/dairy free cookie dough ice cream which was labeled gluten free on the menu and I confirmed with the person serving it that it was gluten free, only to overhear the owner saying that it wasnt gluten free... after I had just finished it. He said they didnt know if it was and were waiting to find out. If thats the case, then dont label it as gluten free on your menu and dont instruct your staff to say that it is - say we dont know and someone with an allergy like myself will avoid it. I cant eat anywhere that I cant trust the staff to give me accurate and honest information, so I wont be returning. Which is a shame. This is a great place if you dont have any food allergies. As someone who does, I cant review it highly.
Small little shop filled with candy and all sorts of sweets. Got the salted caramel tiny scoop and it was so good! There are some benches outside to sit on since there isnt much room inside. Service was also great even tho it was crowded.
This place is adorable. Great place to buy a fun gift for family/kids. Also, the owner is super nice. Will definitely go back for ice cream!
The $13 smores sundae is totally worth it. Excellent selection of old time candy and exotic candy bars. Employees were over the top nice. There was a small line when we got there on a Friday night, but I now understand why! Will be going back very soon
The best of the best of the best. There is no better dessert/candy shop on the planet
Good
The sweets are just great. Its homemade a bit pricy but the 3.50 spent on a homemade chocolate bar is better then any latte.
The employee working there was helpful and gave samples on some stuff. Kind of said everything was good, not too descriptive on any specifics. Theres a decent selection of candies, cookies, and ice cream. However after I left, I learned that the prices of goods I bought (just candy) were extremely upmarked... my mistake but I think if you are looking for novelty candy there are more affordable options in manhattan. I paid maybe 3x the price of what it shouldve costed. I get you have to resell it and make a profit but imo theres places that dont rip you off this badly.
This was my first experience here and so I had a few questions, as I do with anything new. The guy behind the counter wasnt so friendly when I asked him for some samples but for $6.00 Im making sure I like the Ice cream I purchase!! My mom is ill and I wanted to make sure that 2 scoops wasnt too much for her to handle so I asked if I could watch them put my ice cream together. He sarcastically says, sorry but we are a fast placed business, 1 scoop is 1 scoop. As he was saying this to me I saw the girl scoop my ice cream into the takeout container so at this point i was offended. Unbelievable how ignorant ppl can be!!! Dude, you are such a dick!! You probably live a miserable life and Im sorry for you. Yeah you were finally friendly upon my exit but it doesnt make up for your ignorance. Im sure Im not the only one you treated so poorly.
Great ice cream (unusual flavors from gourmet purveyors) and penny candy made from real ingredients, including many imports.
This store is amazing! So cute, with an amazing selection of candy and some delicious ice cream.
Great candy shop. They make a great cup of coffee also.. Matthew was very attentive and helpful.
There is nothing in the world worth being treated badly for. After waiting in line and witnessing a handful of customers accosted with rules and being told no for what seemed like basic requests for an ice cream shop, we left. We provided feedback to what seemed like the guy in charge and he presented a similar attitude. Do yourself a favor and spend your money at a shop that doesnt take itself so serious and has the time to speak to customers with kindness and respect.
Father Son team that delivers the most personable and royal treatment along with amazing quality products in a fabulous environment! The absolutely ideal location for a treat! An NYC must see!
Great options
Man oh man, never before have I ever been to an ice cream parlor with a bouncer before! I dare say this place could be considered the Ice Cream Nazi. Bulky, bald-headed man greeted me from behind his podium outside the front door, directing me to wait in line for entry. The shop is so small, they limit the number of people who are in at one time so it doesnt get too crowded. Make sure you get a paper menu when you get in the door, the menu on the wall is hard to see behind the shelving! And you better have your order ready when you get to the front of the line...serve em quick and get em out! Great flavors and variety, but a bit pricey ($6 for 2 small scoops, if I recall). Though the toasted marshmallow was flavorful, it tasted a bit like plastic; dark chocolate was to die for. Certainly full of character and an interesting experience!
Cute sweet shop with yummy candy and chocolate selection. The ice cream is great. However its on the expensive side and I have mixed feelings about the manager... saw him treating the staff so poorly that made me feel embarassed.
Beautiful little shop in the UES but sadly, that is its only redeeming quality. The selection of candies and miscellaneous sweets is ok, but the prices for said items are insane. Still, this doesnt compare to the robbery to come if you plan to get ice cream. The proverbial icing on the cake of this sweet shop however, is having to deal with the owner or his son. Both are abrasive and nothing short of obnoxious. There are much better options in the area. So, if you are looking for a great spot to be verbally accosted while paying entirely too much for a mediocre product, then the Sweet Shop is the place for you!
Great little ice cream and candy shop. Very old school. Staff is very nice too, especially the dude with the hat.
Pricier than your average candy shop but the product is high quality ✨🌟 My kids LOVE going here and they have the best hard-to-find candy 🍭
Just tried the vegan mint chip ice cream-tasted like what I imagine playdoh with artificial sweetener would taste like:-/and for 6.00 for a single scoop. There are many amazing vegan ice cream spots in NYC- I’m sorry to say, this is not one of them-for V ice cream.
Really yummy banana pudding flavor come and the little one went ballistic when he saw the snow cones. However, its very small and a line forms quickly outside. In the interest of keeping the line down, the fellow at the counter was pretty brash and seemed really stressed out.
Tasty, Manager/Owner? A little bit out there where the buses dont run.
Nice family owned spot for ice cream and various kinds of sweets. The owner and his daughter will take care of you here 🙏
Now that the weather is finally turning around, I hope I can make more stops to the Sweet Shop. We have had nothing but great experiences at this local institution -- we are recognized, treated well, and there always something new to try. Of course not all the options meet our tastebuds, but next time around we will be blown away with a suggestion. And if you are looking for treats other than ice cream, the selection is pretty overwhelming.
Great! Loved the strawberry and the pumpkin ice cream.
The guy behind the counter is super friendly and always has great recommendations.
Its a dessert lovers piece of heaven. There are all kinds of candy and treats. Every is organized nicely and service is just as sweet as the treats!
Best ice cream and candy in New York.
The candy and ice cream are amazing. I loved the coffee crunch ice cream in the pretzel cone. The Peanutbutter icecream, which I am eating right now is delicious. The bacon covered in chocolate and peanut butter was the best! The owners are very nice, giving, and knowledgeable about sweets. I will come back my next time in New York.
The guy behind the counter is a horrible scam artist, this place went down hill. He was a jerk, unfriendly, and his ice cream sucked. You’re better off going to go a carton of Ben and Jerry’s without the miserable man behind the counter. I paid 19.95 for two scoops of ice cream that were subpar.
Fun. Some of these boutique ice creams are overpriced but what do you expect. Nice manager and good staff. Expect to wait especially at peak hours; we were there a friday night in Summer.
