A really great place to grab a quality cup of coffee. If youre in the area and dont mind venturing down a random NYC alley, youd do yourself a disservice to not come here for coffee. I highly recommend the military latte (matcha latte with a shot of espresso added). Its really delicious and not something Ive seen on a menu before. The shop low key, intimate, and the baristas seem great. 5 stars.
This is the most delicious coolest coffee tea blend ever. The vibe in Au Cheval is super cool and being down a wee alley makes it even cooler. We had their 2 iconic coffees the Military and Black Camo. The originator hails from Japan and wow he knows his stuff. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun
Its refreshing to have a coffee experience that serves dark-roasted coffee without a lingering burn flavor. The barista was very kind yet hustled, something Ive grown to appreciate the more I drink coffee. The espresso shot was served in a shot glass, which was pretty neat. The inside of Ah Cheval was nicely dimmed and had some pretty clubby music for a Sunday. The seating for the cafe part of the space was ample and cozy, and the sort of garage punk vibe is such a breath of fresh air from a lot of cafes that seem to pursue modern minimalist designs that remind me of Urban Outfitters meets Scandinavian design. Their highly decorated Victoria Arduino Black Eagle is just awesome, like some kind of hot rod from an apocalyptic future. All in all, worth a visit and a sit-down; go visit and support a wonderful space!
Lovely little place with a few tables, bar seating, and a solid offering of coffee, espresso, and matcha. Loved my cortado, especially since they didnt charge extra for oat milk! It was smooth and had a nice body to it too. Im definitely coming back to try their tea next time, since theyve got a dirty matcha and dirty hojicha latte that both sound delicious.
On a tiny street/alley in Chinatown filled with active construction vehicles, you duck into a quiet and stylish cafe/restaurant. Its dark and peaceful inside. For drinks we love the camolatte in particular - a super unique coffee tea mix, which sounds odd but in its particular balance works great. Something unique in the City.
Amazing amazing! i wasn’t a huge fan of my first drink. asked her if I could pay an up charge for a new one, but she was so kind and made me new one for free :) second one tasted amazing
Impeccable, gorgeous latte art! The milk they use has a subtly sweet flavor, although there is no added sugar or sweetener. It was unusual but I liked it very much.
Great if a little pricey! I love their mocha with orange zest on top. Inside a great burger spot in Chinatown
I first got into coffee shops when I used to live in Chicago, and it was at Sawada Coffee there that everything started. Since moving to NYC late last year, I never thought Id see Sawada Coffee again unless I go back to Chicago. But once I found out there was one in NYC (Plus Au Cheval in same building) I was so happy since it brought back nostalgia of Chicago, my home for last 20+ years. Military Latte still tasted good, and I was able to make a friend by being there. I think aside from taste review, this is just review of nostalgia and feels. Very pleased for that reason.
Great espresso (what I always have everywhere I go) and cappuccino. Definitely recommend if youre in the area.
This Chicago originated coffee shop is a must for me, no matter whether I travel to NYC or Chicago. The vibe is no doubt great. The one in New York has a 1920s vibe and is joining with Au Cheval, another famous dining icon in Chicago, in one space. The Black Camo Latte or Military Latte are perfect blend between Matcha and Espresso, the taste is no where to be found in other places. The place located in an unpretentious alley, which actually increase the fun when discovering it.
I first discovered Sawada in Chicago and was thrilled to learn that they have an NYC location was well. Their Military Latte with macadamia nut milk is still by far one of the best coffee beverages I’ve ever had — worth the visit every time!
Good coffee. There are not many seats but nice atmosphere
Great coffee game. plus they serve glasses to the very edge. it’s a great quest and makes you value your drink even more bearing it to the table as the most fragile thing in the world
Sawada, Incredible.
This coffee shop is great, their lattes are a must, but they also serve some other good drinks. This location is attached to an Au Cheval restaurant which is fine, I guess theyre trying to break out in New York. I didnt see as many pastries and donuts as the location in Chicago.
Never miss this place. You can get unique drinks in exotic space.
Wow very impressed. Different and tasty. Friendly service.
I love their matcha latte!! So good - you don’t normally get ‘real’ matcha in nyc despite so many places trying to sell matcha, it usually tastes nothing like what you can get in Japan. But this is rather authentic!
Excellent coffee. Quiet on weekday mornings.
9.15.19 - really good coffee and located inside of Au Cheval.
Great black camo latte - deliciously created and the barista was very nice. The spot is a little dark but intimate.I dont think Tokyo style is in my favor in this regard - but ?Im glad it exists
Love this place for coffee or tea. Amazing!
Cool place try the military matcha latte
Hoji cha in black camo latte definitely stands out! Not too sweet which is how I like it and the latte art is aesthetically pleasing
This coffee shop is a hidden gem and one of the few places in New York that makes drinks Tokyo-style
Intense yummy matcha and coffee combos!
Great latte art
Amazing coffee, service, and interior!
