I used to sit in this coffeeshop almost every weekend when I lived in Hell’s Kitchen. They use oatly and counter culture coffee which is the recipe for a great coffee. My only problem is the strong (and bad) smell, probably because of the eggs and other things they make. I guess if they left the door open or had better circulation that wouldn’t be an issue. If you only doing a to go that’s great option if you want to sit down a relax, be ready for it
Perfect for picking up a quick breakfast. I always get a hot chocolate and an egg sandwich. Get the 9 grain bread with ham and tomato to start your morning right!
There are many hole in the wall sort of places in NYC that serve great coffee and Rex is one of them. But the rarity is how good their sandwiches are. Whether its breakfast or lunch you cant really go wrong. Theyve got a wizard in the kitchen over there!
🥪 The breakfast egg sandwiches are one of best in NYC! 🗽🍞 You can choose bread and toppings.🥑 🍅🌶️ Brioche + avocado + tomato + hot sauce is my favoriteJust visited recently after not having been for over a year and it was just as awesome as I remember 😀
Nice Americano. But no pour over, even though its on menu. Staff answer: nobody orders it, so would get stale. No sense, wasted time for detour.
Stopped here looking for a new coffee place and was not disappointed in the slightest. Fresh coffee, friendly staff… extremely happy with my find
It was good but there’s nowhere to sit besides 1 table.
Amazing counter culture coffee and delicious egg sandwiches!! They’ve also got great vegan pastry options. The egg sandwiches are only $3.50 . RUN DON’T WALK!!
Great coffee, and their egg sandwiches are awesome!
Average coffee experience. Coffee was ok was expecting a better coffee with more taste.
One of the best breakfast burritos Ive ever had. High quality, perfectly cooked ingredients - absolutely delicious. The coffee is good too!
Took one star off because no seating available inside yet except one tableThe bagels were great and the coffee was great made with loveI was with an obnoxious ordering party and the guys looked like they were about to snap but held their smiles the whole time LOL I commend them for that!!!!! (Sorry guys!)
Counter culture is one of the top roasters, and Rex do a great job making espresso based drinks. My Oatly Cap was delicious.
Egg sandwich was delicious and they make it anyway you like. Got the iced coffee as well and it was deliciousI highly recommend if youre in NYC
Excellent breakfast sandwich and coffee spot.
I like the coffee, and I appreciate places that recognize once they make mistakes and make sure their clients are well attended.
A very pretty coffee shop in downtown! This coffee shop has been in this area for a quiet long time. The locals love their coffees, pies, and cakes. They had also brunch in which tastes so good. The place has a great ambiance. It was so relaxing and calming. The barista was so polite and pleasant to talk with.
Excellent coffee, unlike the other coffee places nearby this place takes the time make coffee right. When it wasn’t perfect the barista made another one (without me even asking for it). I’m from the west where coffee is a spiritual part of life. The Rex gives you that coffee feeling of daily morning satisfaction.
Wow! Their desserts and coffees are just overwhelmingly delicious and one of a kind. The location also is very accessible and good, in fact its inside the mall. Very homey feels while having your coffee here. And also, all of the staff are very accommodating and knowledgeable about the food-pairing for the coffee you order. Highly recommended!
I love this place! Great coffee and pastries. Really good breakfast sandwiches. Really great at adhering to Covid protocols.
The Cuban and coffee is to die for! The breakfast sandwiches are all so good, great meat servings. The sweets are so yummy. The worst part, they close too early, and male baristas not the friendliest but small price to pay.
Great small shop in west midtown. Coffee very good, so good had to enjoy it black. Also bec good as well. Bec with a twist, pressed bun instead of hard roll.
Outstanding coffee and the BEST bacon, egg and cheese sandwich! Unfortunately not in my hood but I will find a way to get there often! Yummy
Very neighborhood friendly. Has a freshness, uniqueness to its creations and a healthy vibe to its offerings. The staff is accommodating. Never disappointed. In other words, aways reliably excellent.
My god, the attitude! I asked the cashier what was in the chicken verde sandwich, and she looked at me as if I was growing a second head. She told me chicken and salsa verde. I asked if there was anything else in there, and she replied with, “I don’t know.”Brought it up one star because I asked to speak to someone else who was perfectly cordial and told me there was a bit of sour cream. Guess what I do not like?If you don’t want me to spend my money at your business, perfectly happy to take it elsewhere.
They make a good cap.
Very good coffee, cute place, nice staff
Great iced coffee and the egg sandwich is simply rapturous!
That breakfast burrito tho 👌🏽
Went during Covid. Awesome place! Its small, they only allow 2 people at a time. Very cheery customer service. Everyone had a mask. Yummy coffee. They had sweet stuff available.
Best coffee in the city, I was so obsessed with the egg brioche sandwiches I never noticed the breakfast burrito, and that is just wow 😋
Friendly staff, nice coffee and well priced egg sandwich. What else can one ask for.Might become my new go to spot in my new neighborhood.
I just moved to the hood and wanted to try out the local coffee shops, being a lover of good coffee. I saw the photos and reviews and this place looked fantastic! I went over to give it a try.Unfortunately reality was different than the portrayal of the place online, and the people there were not very serviceable. They were not even looking my way as I entered, being the only person there. Having to really call for attention before being asked what I would like.I took a latte to go, and while I was expecting a good froth on the milk and some cool latte art, instead I received milk that was too little frothed, and made my coffee instead of silky, very liquidy. Obviously with such milk there was no latte art at all but just a brown finish on top.I’ll need to unfortunately look elsewhere for my morning coffee. Unfortunate because I had such high hopes!
Breakfast served until 11am. Lunch starts at 12pm. I love their custom breakfast sandwiches with brioche buns. Croissant was buttery, pumpkin muffin was moist. In addition, they had apple cider donuts, banana breads, scones, and more! Didnt try any drinks but they looked fairly priced and like they sourced from earth friendly places.
Good coffee and it’s very nice that they offer Oatly. Other than that they don’t have a lot of vegan stuff, but making a vegan sandwich would probably be possible though.I got a brioche sandwich with egg, cheese, avocado and tomato and I thought it was great. Kind if a lot of egg but also I’m not really a big egg eater.I like the atmosphere in the place and the way it’s decorated. Nice staff and also, music was not bad and not too loud and that’s really great.Very limited seating! I was coming here hoping I could sit and study for a bit, but they only have two large communal tables. Seating is really only available for 8-12 people at each time, and it seems like a lot of people come here to work on their computers, and stay here a while. Anyways, I got a nice seat after a bit and it was chill. Yeee long review yay.
My sister and I discovered this gem on a long weekend to NY. We were thrilled to happen upon REX for a quick breakfast. Amazing! The banana bread was so delicious we went there the next day as well. I’d love to get the recipe! Valerie (or Samantha as I called her) was friendly and welcoming. She made me feel like a regular.
Really really top notch place to get a quick coffee to go, or to relax and get some work done. I make an effort to come here as much as possible. The coffee is obviously great and the food is really good.
I love this coffee shop! They have excellent sandwiches! I have tried a couple and they have been very very good! Try to get there early to get their breakfast sandwich with the egg, cheese and Avocado! They sell out pretty fast! The coffee is also very good, although a little on the pricey side! I love their mushroom-gruyere knish that they have at the moment. It is delicious.
Good lattes and friendly folks! What more could you ask for
Best breakfast sandwiches
Good coffee and breakfast sandwich. Open kitchen means the grease can be in your face depending on the day.
The place itself is very small and appears cramped but the coffee, atmosphere, and most of all service really hit it out of the park. I never tried the sandwiches there but the coffee was great, and the size of the place only made it feel more cozy. What really earned this place the 5 star however is the friendliness of everyone there. While there I had probably hands down the best customer service from the barista; she kept a very friendly smile the whole time, was very pleasant to talk to, and did not at all appear impatient. Not only is the staff super friendly, the customers there are very warm and friendly. Rex is a very wholesome and relaxing place to chill and grab a cup of coffee.
Great coffee and amazing bacon egg and cheese
I must say that Rex is the best sandwich cafe I ever tried in HK and NY. The coffee is good, but what makes it stand out is its freshly made hot breakfast sandwiches! Any choice is great! Strongly recommend it.
The coffee is excellent and interesting. I mean its not just good but it is really different in taste then other quality coffee places. The food vary artsy but very good. Portions tend to be on the small side for my taste. The location it self is a little tight and uncomfortable which is a shame.
An indie coffee shop at the cusp of Hells Kitchen and the UWS. Rex has to be of the best high quality ingredient eggs on a roll you can get. Cost is what you would expect, about $3-7 depending on what you out on it. The coffee is good: pourovers, espresso drinks, and various non-dairy milks. There is space to work and eat inside but its limited and usually full. This is a place worth noting for that regular coffee routine.
Best coffee & espresso drinks around, ➕ good neighbors
They serve one of the best coffees, Counter Culture, but they do not use the best roast. My coffee had a strong acidy taste. The service and atmosphere was great.
Our go-to place for breakfast in NYC. Love my usual sunny side up in croissant and out of this world coffee. The place is small (like most if not all shops in NYC) but most customers like to grab and go. Service is fast and good. Highly recommend.
They charge for large coffee (and a cup of display is large), but you get a small cup instead. Coffee isn’t hot at all. It’s slightly warm.
Thanks! So grateful to Peter and Marinell for opening this much needed neighborhood coffee spot. Great coffee along withbreakfast and lunch sandwiches. An early spot in line will get you a breakfast burrito. Dont miss the fresh baked muffins and cookies!
Staying at the Watson Hotel on W 57 St, Rex is right around the corner. We have been here every morning for great coffee and egg sandwiches with avocado and bacon. Or sausage, or chorizo. Delicious, nice people, family friendly (been a stroller inside every day). Highly recommend.
Like all other Barnes stores delightful to go buy books.
Good coffee. Pretty good food. Straightforward selection of sandwiches and pastries for breakfast and lunch
Best hot chocolate Ive had in a NY coffee shop, and also great sandwiches and pastries. I havent tried the coffee but I hear its great too. Another nice touch is that they display the work of a local artist (changes from time to time).
20 minutes for an egg sandwich is way too long. The man making the sandwiches was moving as fast as he could(no blame on him) but they need more help. The latte was meh.
It is rare to find a place that serves great drinks/food, maintains a top-notch staff and owner, and cares about their own neighborhood. The coffee is decadent, and the muffins make me break my diet. On top of it all, every evening, the owner donates extra food to a nearby shelter or school. We need more environmentally and community conscious businesses like Rex in NYC. thank you.
First time I came, they forgot my sandwich order and I waited 20+ minutes for it...I couldnt wait another 15 for it so they gave me a free ham and cheese croissant. They were nice about it though.Came in today and I was the only person in line and it took them 20 minutes to make a 1/2 Cuban sandwich. It was yummy but the inside was cold...I dont get it. There were 5 employees behind the counter, 2 in the kitchen, all running around busy, so its not like they werent working. Also the seated area has room for 10 people and it looks like they all got there in the morning with their laptops and work there all day.I want to like this place but they make it hard! Perhaps will come back for just a coffee and a muffin. They looked yummy.
Small counter serve place for some great coffee. We also had their egg sandwiches, which were also pretty good.
Loved it here. Great for breakfast. Never anywhere to sit but thats fine because the food is so nice. Cant wait to go back.
A friend recommended to get the avocado toast based on yelp reviews. Should’ve thought it over because this was the weakest avocado toast I’ve had. It’s just sliced avocado on toasted bread. No salt or pepper or any seasoning whatsoever, it was blander than a piece of cardboard. Pretty upset.
Quiet and highly competent service. The coffee was good, and it was a great place to work for a few hours. if only the AC worked on the 90 degree day I visited, it would have been perfect.
This is a great spot. I am here all the time - the people are so friendly. Really great food and coffee!!
Great space for coffee and pastries. Tasty breakfast and lunch sandwiches made in-house! Communal tables, seating is limited.
Good mochas, excellent staff, and wonderful atmosphere. The art for sale on the walls was a nice touch. All the staff was very nice and didnt seem to mind that I came in close to closing time. The seating area is close quarters but very pleasant. Stop in, you wont regret it.
Cool spot to get coffee and work or relax at. Could use a little more in regards to drink selection, but a great spot nonetheless.
Terrible tea taste. I think it was old water and old tea leaves. Never coming back.
Lovely place with solidly good coffee. The staff knows the locals and everyones friendly. I didnt eat (not many gluten free options, although definitely available according to the sign outside). Sandwiched all sounds great.
Pretty good espresso by third wave standards. The chai with almond milk was also good. Very small, but still nice; cozy, perhaps. Room for about 8 people at tables all of which were full of student-types on a Saturday afternoon.Friendly staff.
The coffee was great. Sandwich was good. Standard for NYC, there’s very little space, plan to take-away.
Nice sandwiches, cool music, good prices. Tasty hot sauce on the table. Communal tables and laptop friendly. Wifi wasnt working but they have it.
Best place in Hells Kitchen for coffee!! Egg sandwiches are consistently delicious. Staff has been courteous and helpful every time I have been there.
