This place is incredible! Its in a wholesale space where they actually make all the chocolate bars and truffles on site, so its not your usual brick and mortar shop. But once you are inside, you can see all the equipment and all their truffles and bars on display. When I came in, the two owners were there and very friendly, and they were so generous with samples (I even got a whole truffle, the hazelnut!) and telling me about what they were inspired by and their unique and cute names for each truffle. I had the hazelnut truffle there, which was incredible, as well as a few of the dark, milk, white, and blonde chocolates -- all were delicious. When I came home tonight, we had the The Lover bar, which is white chocolate, caramel, passion fruit with cardamom, and it was just as delicious as it sounds -- filled with passion fruit on the inside, and the chocolate was really creamy and decadent. It doesnt help that the truffles are so pretty because then I have the dilemma of whether I should eat them or just continue staring at them. Id highly recommend this place when youd like to splurge on high quality chocolate -- all made with Valrhona!
This is I.T. !!!!!! Go nowhere else in Manhattan for chocolate. I give exorbitantly priced Chocolate Tasting Tours and what Chocolat Moderne offers, consistently, is 90% beyond every other boutique chocolatier on this island. So much care & creativity in every piece.
Delicious. Exotic flavors, exquisite fillers. Big kudos for the Avant- Guard bar, white choc with passion fruit insides omg...
I had a gift certificate from eons ago that Joan was kind enough to let me apply towards a selection of chocolate bars. I got the Avant Garde crunchy almond, dark milk crunchy hazlenut, dark milk crunchy sesame and NYC streets nuts bar. Im not sure which one I like best as theyre all exceptional. I expect I will be a frequent and repeat customer. Unfortunately my partner - who picked up the bars for me - wasnt offered any samples as others have been (including a friend who visited this weekend) so cant comment on the truffles though when I had them some time ago (cant remember when - its been some time now) I dont remember being particularly wowed by them. The bars on the other hand are worth the price of admission!
Everything in this store is delicious. We tried about 15 different chocolates and each one was beautiful (theyre all handmade) and tasted heavenly. They make great gift boxes too.
A nice shop tucked away on the 9th floor of a building on 20th st. I was craving caramels and dislike hard caramels and prefer soft center ones. The owners were very helpful and explained their french recipe caramels to me. The center is soft, almost like a liquid caramel but slightly thicker. I tried a maple syrup flavored one and it was delicious.
THE best chocolate in the city, and all over. I know my chocolate. Joanne is an incredible creator of flavor. She’s the real deal.
Really really delicious chocolates and lots of free samples! A bit on the pricy side but completely worth it. Flavours are creative and chocolate is rich and smooth and delicious. Service was also lovely
I wish everyone the pleasure of tasting some of the beautiful and delicious sweet treats from NYC chocolatier – Chocolat Moderne – and I’d be proud to recommend a visit and purchase to all self-proclaimed chocolate lovers and would-be thoughtful gift-seekers who may happen upon this review!Meeting Joan and Jim in their “factory/storefront” and exchanging pleasantries while learning about their wonderful creative flavors and spirited inspirations only added to the confection affection baking inside of my mind’s oven (quadruple pun not intended).I purchased an assortment of their bars and bonbons as gifts to bring my transplanted NYC friends (who now live in another big city) as a taste of home and an homage to their eclectic tastes and styles. While I tend to agree that almost all chocolate is good, not all are great, and certainly not all are beautiful. These are great, beautiful, in somewhat limited supply, and come in enough flavors that there’s certainly a few you have yet to experience.Needless to say (based on my deserved 5 star review), the gifts were well-received (and not long-lived) and I have found new inspiration to inject into my own hobby of pastry creation, along with an 85% cacao that is exactly my idea of how extra-dark chocolate should be done.So that’s it, I’ve put it out there. I don’t like sharing my opinions, but this chocolate is great, and while nothing in New York City is necessarily “fairly-priced,” the flavors, attention-to-detail, and customer service from the founders made this gift/personal purchase seem like a great value and has solidified its designation as my new secret spot to make not-so-secret via this Google review.P.S. Please let me cut in line if you’re going to stand in one before any holidays where they probably have to hand out numbers and possibly sell out of certain flavors, or altogether. Much appreciated!
Amazing little shop tucked away on an upper floor. Great service that helps you choose the custom chocolate assortment. And they taste divine.
I wrote the book on the NYC chocolate scene and Ive profiled every shop. If you search for Professor Chocolate online youll see my name pop up. This is one of my top 5 shops of all time and Joan makes some of my all time favorite bonbons and bars. She is a true artisan. The secrecy of this hidden chocolate factory adds to the experience.. Walking in, youll feel like youve discovered a lost treasure. If you havent been here, I would question how much you actually love chocolate!
I try to find a new (great tasting) chocolate shop every Father’s Day for my dads. This one did not disappoint. Even got to meet the owner/chocolatier and she is such a gem. Definitely have the caramel and all of the alcohol filled ones. So good.
Such a great small business, I will definite order again after the Great British Desserts and Avant-Garde bars I purchased as a Mother’s Day gift and were a big hit...the perfect gift for someone with a sweet tooth and discerning taste.
The real life Willy Wonkas chocolate factory. As soon as you walk in thou smell the chocolate. Its not a store front, from the outside it looks like a residential building.
Amazing! Found this place by looking for chocolate on Google. I saw the reviews and figured I had to go. I wondered if it would live up to the reviews.. it did!! Its a bit hidden as other reviewers mention (not much of a sign and you need to take the elevator to the 9th floor) but absolutely worth it! The people working there were so nice and let us sample a bunch of chocolates while we decided what to get. Defiantly recommend!!
Excellent chocolate here. This coming from someone who doesnt enjoy sweets all that much! If youre the frugal type be warned its pricey but you get what you pay for. The quality of the product and its ingredients are top notch.
I bought some chocolate as a gift from Chocolat Moderne and it was a great experience. The owner was there and was extremely helpful and nice. I was able to sample a couple of pieces, and it is absolutely the best chocolate I have ever tasted (and so pretty)! I look forward to going back.
The delicious chocolate here is made even better by the proprietors’ kindness. I went inside to buy an assortment after stumbling upon the store, which is hidden on the ninth floor of a nondescript building. Once there, I stayed and chatted with one of the owners, who told me about the store’s history, and let me sample some of the delicate, interesting pieces of chocolate made right there in the shop. I highly recommend.
I met with Jim that day and was blown away with the variety of flavors of chocolate. Jim could not be more helpful selecting the right candies for my fiance back in Michigan....the gift was a big hit with her and I will definitely be back when a special occasion may arise that calls for the best chocolate....Thanks so much!
Amazing selection of flavors. Best customer service Ive ever had. Very friendly staff 11/10 will come again you should too!
Received some chocolates for my birthday. Absolutely scrumptious, high quality chocolate.
Amazing treasure in an unassuming location. Check it out!
Amazing chocolate!
The service, chocolate, and experience of going to the location were all incredible. I absolutely love this place and will certainly return
One of the coolest hidden chocolate shops in NYC. The people there are so incredibly passionate about chocolate and so friendly - theyll definitely chat with you about everything from cocoa beans to their newest creations. I recommend their The Lover Avant-Garde Bar, as well as their bonbons. The quality of chocolate makes Chocolat Moderne treats well worth their cost. The chocolate has a perfect snap, and the fillings for the bonbons and bars are made so that they highlight flavor and arent overwhelmingly sweet. Never mind that theyre gorgeous! I cant wait to return!
Really nice selection! Robert was very nice and helped me pick out a few choice chocolates.
Amazing chocolates! Cool looking shop. Joan and her hubby are great folks with awesome taste for chocolate creating.
Great service and delicious chocolate. Perfect if you want to get a gift
Amazing tucked away place on the 9th floor. chocolates are really top notch.
Awesome chocatier fun experience and the most amazing, decadent chocolates ever!
Great place for a special gift. Terrific service and great choices.
Try it out! Chocolate is amazing!
Amaing chocolates, super friendly. Its on the 9th floor of the building of youre looking for it on street level
Very expensive but worth it for a taste although will not be a regular there, it is $8/bar or $3/bonbon, I recommend the passionfruit or sea salt caramels, the owners husband is very friendly, the owner less so but she still came out and greeted us. Not on street level so must go up to 9th floor but they have an elevator.
The chocolates are expensive but delicious and the customer service is top notch. I was given free ice to keep the chocolates cold on an Amtrak ride out of state for the weekend and the owner helped me pick out every piece of chocolate for the gift boxes.
Wow...!!! Chocolate.....! They have this white passion fruit - square something- soooooooo goooood....A bit expensive but is nice to give your lady some sugar...
Chocolate is great and staff was extremely helpful and friendly.
Highest quality chocolates, all of which are created on site.
Amazing chocolate choices!
Wonderful chocolate shop!
So tasty!
Fantastic chocolates, great conversation
Yum
A small chocolate shop on the 9th floor with a quiet sign. Hidden famous store is a word just for this store, chocolate is a first-class item. It seems that his wife is acting in the contest at the Chocolatier, and her husband was there to serve us. Its a great shop because you can sample and have a very friendly reception. It seems that chocolate is sold at Dean & Deluca, so maybe it can be eaten in Japan. I want you to go.
It is recommended for those who like chocolate adventures. I think they are owners who like Japan. The Japanese pattern of the kimono is printed on chocolate, and there are also flavors using persimmons and citrons.Chocolate made with caramel had a lot of impact and the amount of caramel was so large that it was not my favorite sweetness. Its a bit expensive, but I think its a perfect souvenir for New York.
The chocolate shops should be outlawed, it is impossible to resist the temptation and then you taste everything and everything tastes delicious.
The richest chocolates Ive tried, I have my modeling school on the # 3 floor and my students constantly escape to go and savor these, I recommend them 100%
Still breakfast at home with butter and chocolate chocolate
Excellent
Super
