Great pastries. Great coffee. Bellwether roaster. Love the logo and merchandise. Kind people with indoor dining available. Good vibes with natural wood floors painted white brick, gold accents. Gallette is amazing! Ginger peach scone us unique and really tasty. Dozen bakery provides the goods! Good visit!
Solid selection of fresh pastries and drinks made-to-order. Everything I had over two days was really solid. Latte beans were more on the earthy-side, not acidic, which my wife and I enjoyed. Everything was reasonably priced. My only recommendations would be to expand the tea selection and add something to the ambience here. I personally wouldnt recommend spending much time here but would prefer ordering to-go.
Ordered 2 bagel sandwiches, 1 mocha and 1 iced coffee with vanilla. $30 for all plus tip, that felt pretty spendy. I had the GOAT sandwich which was 9/10 excellent my fiancé had an egg sandwich which he rated a 6/10, however his mocha was grainy. My iced coffee was good, I would order the goat and the iced coffee again, we wouldn’t not order the mocha in the future. Cool atmosphere, lots of seating and tons of customization options.
Great coffee and usually a good spot to work from. Its gotten pretty busy recently but still a good spot if you get there at a good time!
This place is great. New and nice. Everyone is friendly. The drinks we had were great. They aren’t afraid to create some interesting concoctions. They also have a great ambiance to be able to work from, with cute little London style phone booths in the back.Bottom line: definitely try this place out. You won’t regret it.
Hidden gem near what I assume is Airbnb central for downtown Nashville! Coffee and bagels are top notch.
Sandwiches are great! Service was slow and espresso and coffees were more acidic for my liking. It has a great overall environment, and Id still gladly go there for a Sunday work/prep day. If youre like me and prefer darker, smokier coffee and espresso, this might not be your preferred coffee joint. +3 stars for the food quality and environment. -2 for the coffee quality and wait time.
Good new coffee spot in East Nashville. Lots of great potential for this third wave spot serving a variety of great Third Wave roasters from around the States. Vibe is pretty nice with a great art piece on the outside wall. Americano was good as was the latte but the pour art needs some work. Definitely worth a visit. Side note - some cool looking furniture and art stores in the same shopping center.
Love love love this place. Excellent craft coffee! My husband and I were in town for the week and this was absolutely a favorite!Only 4 stars because on our last day in town we stopped by so looking forward to getting a drink but they were out of the smoked hickory syrup and out of oat milk and almond milk. A bummer for us since we can’t drink dairy... I was surprised they weren’t out of coffee as well... haha. BUT all in all- coffee (when they have it) is EXCELLENT, beautiful aesthetic, room to hang out or work & one of my favorite coffee shops! Can’t wait to come back!
Decor and branding are nice. Coffee isnt good enough to justify the pretention and poor service.
Great third-wave coffee shop in nashvillle, i’ll always stop by when i’m up here. definitely recommend if you are looking for great coffee and if you’re looking for some really creative specialty drinks as well.
This place has the traditional feel of a small coffee shop. Its got all of the right decor selections and the baristas look like every other Nashville coffee shop... I would say that I didnt really love their coffee, so the coffee is what brings it down for me
Waited 30 mins for food to go ordered avocado toast and when it finally made its way out to us, it wasnt on the right bagel we ordered and didnt have the pickled onion as advertised. And 2 people got their food before we did and we had been waiting for our food for 20mins already. Super disappointed about this visit.
Pretty good coffee but on the pricey side, higher than Starbucks.
Hipster Coffee place in Nashville full of youngun’ Nashvillites with beards and fades and beautiful long flowing hair and mani pedis! Great coffee, nice baristas, good conversation starts while ordering! I got the “Selena” breakfast sandwich. Yummers!! Air conditioned inside and covered patio outside. Good parking! If I were a local this would be my go-to coffee house work spot!
Hours say open until 8. Got here at 5. Closed.
Look at my history its rare for me to leave bad reviews. The coffee was okay. The cappuccino I ordered was not very frothy so it was more like a latte. The taste was good though. The service was below par. The two baristas were not very kind. In fact, they both separately decided to lecture me for filling up my water. After the first guy told me I should have asked for the water I said okay my bad, I appreciate your help and then the barista ignored me because he was upset I filled up my water? I had to say thank you three times to elicit a response from the barista because he was mad at me for filling the water on my own even though thats how almost every shop does it. Then, the second barista I guess decided the first guy had all the fun and he wanted to lecture me too. So he chimed in with you should have just asked us for water like okay guy my bad yall were busy and I didnt want to bother yall. Also, now that Im being critical of this place, the baristas never bothered to ask me how I was doing or anything. It was just the classic what can I get for you with no intro at all. They werent busy either. I just wanted to make a little small talk while I got my order but these baristas had that whole Im a barista so Im better than you vibe. Why does that seem so common?I wont be coming here again. Too many good shops around to spend my money somewhere where it doesnt seem valued.
Open concept cafe is welcoming and very sleek. Drip coffee was good. Pricing on drinks was a bit high, in my opinion. Having beer on tap gives this place a unique spin.
We were over on this side of town and knew that Retrograde did Onyx coffee pour over. The service was what let this place down, and pales compared with the other fantastic coffee venues in town. Our server was disinterested. We ordered two pour over coffees....one was brewed and left to cool whilst our server had a chat with a friend who came in. 10 minutes later they start the next pour over. Neither coffee was an example of how great Onyx can taste and tasted under-extracted. We were disappointed to say the least!
So glad this amazing local coffee shop opened up! I’m in love with their iced coffee and all three of their simple, healthy smoothies! The owner, Nathan, is very nice and friendly, along with all of the baristas. The inside has amazing design with lots of seating options, fast WiFi, and a multitude of outlets. Im so thankful for an amazing coffee shop with great prices that isn’t too pretentious. Everyone feels welcome there!
Disgusted. Found a hair in my food. Gross. Staff extremely rude. Would avoid this place at all costs. If I could give negative stars I would
Again and again one of the best coffeeshops in town. Always creative and new specials and fantastic bean selection.
Cute space solid coffee, serious about social distancing
Very nice laid back coffee shop. Staff was very nice and coffee was good. The manager also directed me to a very great tasting danish.
Wonderful elevated cafe, beautiful decor. Espresso is stellar.
Ive been to a lot of coffee shops. NOTHING...and I repeat... NOTHING compares to retrograde. They use Onyx Coffee Lab beans and are precise in how they prepare it. I live 25 minutes away and make the drive just for the coffee. Sandwiches are good too. I stock up on whole beans (Onyx CK Southern Weather) for my home brews. Did I mention that this is the best coffee Ive ever had? Vibe is great, too.
I want to start by saying how much I value this space and the products they serve. I come here at least twice a week, and will continue to come, but want to voice my continual disappointment in the service I receive.Over and over upon walking up to the counter, if the servers are busy, they do not acknowledge a single person who is clearly waiting right in front of them. I understand staying on task, but to not even be spoken to for sometimes up to five minutes while a line forms behind me, feels disrespectful and awkward. Sometimes when I am waiting, the servers are simply talking to one another and the customers waiting to order are left to patiently wait for the staff to finish their own conversations before speaking to the customer.Today was another moment of waiting on my food to be prepared while watching the servers pause to chat among one another until they literally had to check back in with me to see what I had ordered.I love the space so much, and the coffee and bagels are my favorite in town. It has potential to be amazing, I just hate consistently leaving feeling as though my service doesnt matter, and that my time is not valued.
Love this place! Its one of my favorite coffee shops in Nashville.Theyve got a killer coffee program and are always changing up the coffees featured for pour overs which allows you to experience different coffee and flavors from different regions. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about the constantly changing offering.Ive been here quite a few times but on the most recent visit I spent about half the day here getting some work done and so I got to experience a fair amount of the menu. [Pro Tip: If youre going to hang out for multiple hours at a coffee shop then you should be buying things and supporting the business ;) ]In addition to a pour over and espresso (coffee staples), I ventured out into the food menu. It was a simple offering but super tasty. We got the a grilled cheese (pick two cheeses) and went with goat and cheddar. It was oozing with cheese when it hit the plate and had a wonderful crispy crunch to the rye bread, just the way I like it.Since we were here into the afternoon we got a chance to try some of the beer and cider options too. It was a short list of drafts and cans that were nicely curated.Retrograde is firing on all cylinders. Head over and experience it for yourself.
NASHVILLE COFFEE TOUR #1: My bestie and I tour different coffee places around Nashville that are new to me. ☕We had a good experience overall. It was a well-lit, intimate coffee shop. The bar was a great place to converse and people watch.I had an Americano while my friend had a Latte. We both enjoyed the coffee for its freshness and size. The espresso leans towards the greener notes that people tend to favor in Nashville that its not my fave, but I did like it. I do personally love a dark roast (scandalous!) but can definitely enjoy a well-roasted cup of coffee! ❤Bestie had an egg sandwich that was pretty good, but I wasnt truly paying attention to cost and the details. The bagels are impressively made there and they were really good! I had a fantastic blueberry muffin! The staff could be friendlier and less condescending, but everyone is entitled to his own snarkiness every once in a while so Ill give them the benefit of the doubt. We felt like we were a little too joyful to be there! If I was in the area, I would stop in to grab a cup, but I wouldnt go out of my way to go there.
Very very good Coffee! Baristas were super helpful. Love the coffee!!
Retrograde was the first neighborhood shop in the Cleveland park area where I live, so naturally I was very excited. The coffee is great, the food is good, the customer service is lacking. I have this time to resolve itself, but it is still an issue. A coffee shop staff should be warm, welcoming, and ready to help. Many times I’ve been in line alone with multiple baristas behind the counter working without so much as a “hello, I’ll be right with you”. It’s awkward. I don’t mind waiting, just say “hello!” Also when asking a question, the baristas are often on the defensive. I say, “I have an online order”, they respond, “well we’ve got a lot going on back here so we just haven’t gotten to it yet. We’ll call you when it’s ready.” I wasn’t upset that my order wasn’t ready, yet I was responded to in a rude and defensive way instead of a kinder explanation. Retrograde could be THE neighborhood spot, but the customers have to feel like neighbors you want to invite to a cookout, instead of the neighbors you avoid eye contact with.
One of the reviews on here broke my heart so I had to tag team in some positivity! Im referring to the hipster comment below...I need to clarify- I live nearby and have visited since opening day on and off. I have encountered many different staff members through staff changes. I can say assuredly I have never encountered anyone unkind or with a bad attitude. I find the comment below to be very judgmental. I dont judge the quality of someones heart by how they dress hip or not, by the color of their skin, the shape of their glasses, I could go on and on. Thats all surface level. The coffee is good, the specialty espressos are YUM. Ill order food when I visit today to meet a friend which Im sure will also be delicious! But for sure sure sure- the people are kind. Lets try to be kinder/slow to judge to one another in our interactions from both sides of the counter...
Went here to work from 1-4. However, they shut off the WiFi as 3:30 when I was in a work zoom meeting. One other person had the same issue. They then started cleaning up and the barista started talking to another guy. The guy mentioned how shuttle it was to go that so people would leave and the barista agreed - that it was an hour to close and they have stuff to do.Granted, I agree - however, I was an important business call that got cut off. In addition, I was suppose to work until 4 - and the place doesn’t close for another hour. It’s 3:50 right now, and I’m currently upset at the situation. For the record, their food and drinks are good. But I didn’t appreciate the customer service.
Great coffee option for Cleveland Park!
In harding pl .I am guess was totally crew lol.
Good atmosphere, super overpriced but hey, thats some peoples cup of coffee.
Love getting some work done here. The feta whip is bomb. Love that I have the option of some great coffee or a beer depending on what Im feeling.
I LOVE Onyx and this is an onyx shop- their beans come from onyx! With that being said I absolutely love Onyx, wait, have I said that I love Onyx?? Three stars because of lack of selection, and they couldn’t do pour overs because they were out of filters. Other than that, cool place.
Amazing bagels, great as a sandwich or alone. Awesome coffee. Chill vibes.
Delicious cafe with warm and tasty coffee. Will visit again!
Great coffee, and awesome atmosphere. They have excellent safety protocol in place as Nashville navigates phases of quarantine.
Horrendous service and sub-par coffee...just bad
Cool, funky joint. It might not be the worst coffee Ive ever had, but its close...
Great coffee and great service. Really detail-oriented and certainly knowledgeable baristas. I was surprised and excited to see them serving Onyx Coffee Lab coffees. Gorgeous spot with a really nice outdoor seating area ( covered, so its not too hot).Food here was especially good, too. Definitely worth your time if you like a more upscale, but casual coffee experience.
Great coffee (especially the roasts from Onyx) with a small beer and wine selection, and a handful of small plate options.A little more expensive than similar places in town. The espresso and drip or pour over is worth it for me (really, its outstanding coffee); not so much for the food and lattes in my opinion. The people are very nice too!Look for parking behind the building if the small lot in front is full.
TIP: There is parking out back for those who plan on being there longer than 1 hour. The coffee at Retrograde is delicious. However, I will say that I was quite surprised when the cost with tax for my drink was $6. If youre hunting for the best brew, check it out. If youre wanting an affordable drink and a space to hang for a while, it may be best to check somewhere else.
It shows this place is open until 5 online. I drove over and theres a sign on the door that it closed at 3. Frustrating
Have been several times, small concert, quick coffee, lunch today. Service was quick, respectful, friendly. I had a tasty grill cheese, my friend had tea, both excellent. A little cool inside, so we sat on the patio under cover from the sun, very pleasant. We were serenaded by the sounds of tejano hip hop from the auto shop across the street.👍
Freindly people and its a nice place to relax.
Great coffee. Lovely staff!
Great coffee!
They have done an amazing job during the pandemic, ensuring that everyone gets their much needed coffee, in a safe and social distancing way. Plus the blueberry muffins are pretty good.
Reallllyyyy good coffee and atmosphere. Window walls on 2 sides of the shop, so there is great natural lighting. Good place for meetings or working.
Pleasantly surprised by the delicious ice coffee. Maybe having almond milk freely available is standard around here but it’s new to me and appreciated. Tons of seating and plenty of parking in the back. Pastries and bagels looked good but I was just grabbing a drink to go. Glad to have an independent shop at this location.
Nice atmosphere, good coffee, and was made with lots of care
Awesome coffee shop!
Nice atmosphere!!!
Great coffee, no doubt. Definitely on the level of the elite coffee shops in Nashville. Design is one of my favorite in town. They also have beer and wine!
The coffee is decent, although overpriced. Just be aware that this place is run by hipsters, which means hipster level service (ie continually looking disinterested).
The vibe of this new creative space in Cleveland Park clearly will start a trend in the area! The coffee is top-notch, the service is fantastic, and the decor is unique and beautiful! Can’t wait to come back!
I like the vibe/ambiance of the place, and the people working are kind, welcoming, and informative. The cold brew is delicious. Location is good as there aren’t any other coffee shops too nearby (compared to coffee shop proximities in some other neighborhoods). Parking was easy and convenient. Outlets were abundant, which is great for anyone planning on staying for a while to work.I’ll be back again. Thanks for being open to and taking feedback well!
They serve Onyx coffee and have a good atmosphere. We also tried a seasonal muffin that was tasty.
I have been to every coffee shop in town, and this is the best coffee Ive had. There it is. Simply the best.
Cool spot with great coffee. Also, highly recommend the blueberry muffins!
Cool vibes. Solid expresso.
So glad to have this place in the neighborhood! Every detail has been thought out; all fixtures, colors, and design are wonderfully appointed. Very clean, and the entire staff was friendly, polite, and sincere. Great job Retrograde!
Really nice coffee place, I had a cappuccino and pastry and both were delish. Nice service and ambience too!
Good coffee, I didnt try any of the food. Unfortunately they were out of mocha syrup when I went, which is what I really wanted to try
Retrograde has an incredibly knowledgeable team and even better coffee. They have a star head barista who’s designed a crazy menu! The vibe is beautiful and picture worthy. The drinks and food are classic and well made. They’re definitely bringing star quality coffee to the east side.
Love this place stop in every time Im in Nashville.
The space is really cool. Great place to hang out and chat, or put your headphones on and get some work done. They have some of the best coffee in town. Ill be a regular here.
I really love the aesthetic of this place. It is inviting and cozy. A wonderful place to do work, read a book, or catch up with a friend from out of town.A handful of times I have been underwhelmed with the product. I have received a lukewarm beverage when I requested extra hot (note: they fixed me a new one right away). I have also gotten a variety of dirty chai flavors from extremely bitter to lacking espresso entirely.Truly, 3.5 stars on the rating as the staff are so nice and I will continue to give this place a chance.Just hoping for more consistency in experience.
I mean, I know its a hip coffee joint, but that was ridiculous. Quality was fine, but not any better than any other. AND my iced coffee came in a juice glass. A juice glass.
Excellent coffee and service. A truly wonderful experience!
Really disappointed in this place... onyx coffee is sour no matter who prepares it. Decor is colour by number.
Retrograde is a great little modern coffee shop in East Nashville. They do have a somewhat limited supply of coffee choices, but thats because theyve streamlinedd the basics and made them really exceptional. The crowd here is hip, and the atmosphere is casual.
There is a full on changing table in the restroom with a changing pad. Not one you pull down from the wall, but a stand alone table. ...Something only parents notice in its absence. Also, good coffee and service.
Good pour over coffee. It is very tasty
Too concerned with their vibe than making even descent coffee. If you care about quality espresso drinks, there are MUCH better in Nashville. Shots pulled and let sit before using, lattes that are under-steamed and barely warm (when asked for extra hot), shot poured into pitcher then milk and THEN steamed for a latte... that’s not a latte... and SLOW. Took 12 minutes to get 2 lattes with no one else in line and 3 drink made ahead of ours. Im incredibly disappointed with Retrograde. If you want good coffee, go to Dose, Red Bicycle, Crema, Ugly Mugs, Barista Parlour or Steadfast before you try here.
I’ll preface this by saying I’m only leaving two stars because the coffee was excellent. I ordered two iced coffees and one toasted bagel. I was the only one in the cafe. After watching the staff move at a snails pace, I grew disappointed. After 10-15 minutes, I decided it was best to leave without bagel in hand. The owner should be ashamed.TLDR. Good coffee. Subpar service.
Atmosphere was inviting, clean, and modern. The specialty drinks and pastries looked yummy. However it was clear this is a shop about appearance and fancy drinks, not quality coffee. Talk to the staff for more than 30sec and it’s apparent they are not coffee people, they are restaurant people who happen to work at a coffee shop. I asked one of the owners a very basic question about their Ethiopian coffee, and he didn’t even understand the question. I’d be astonished if the guy brewing my coffee had heard of the apparatus he was using a month ago. Not surprisingly all this ended with a cup that was roasty, flat, and a pretend blueberry note. I came with high hopes of a new third wave coffee shop and left realizing it’s another wave-v2.2. However they will prob do well as their coffee is what most people seem to want: a coffee that is slightly less awful than something like Duncan donuts with the barest hint of a fruit note.
Great pour over!
