It’s been about 2 years since I’ve been here…seems there was an ownership change since the food was different and decor updated. For me this was between a 3 and 4 star. Food taste wise, I would give it a 3 because the pork back stew was bland. This used to be their specialty and so flavourful. But now it was bland and watery. The boiled pork belly was also a bit bland. The extra star to give it a 4 star was the value. We got a set menu for $65 and so much food for 4 people.
We got the complete table special combo set menu where you get to selection a dish from each category of dishes. The bossam (Napa wraps with pork) and pan-fried mackerel were both very good - would definitely order again. The spicy codfish hot pot was not spicy and not salty enough so it tasted watered down. The steamed tofu and egg were decent but nothing special. There were only three tables in the restaurant but the service was still not good. The waitress forgot about our rice and brought it when we were halfway done our meal and repeatedly forgot the water we asked for. When we wanted to ask for the cheque we had to wait a while to get the waitress’s attention as well.
Got food poisoned from eating their (raw) oysters and it was pretty bad that I had to go to hospital. Otherwise food tastes good and is relatively cheap. Severely understaffed. Nothing is said or done after I told them about the food poisoning instance, hence one star (I rated them two stars earlier).
This place is the place to go to for authentic Korean dishes. Its been over a decade since my first time but their food is still good as my first time. They have over a dozen menu items but they specialize in their soup and pork menus. My favorite is the Daeji Kalbi, pork rib l, which is marinated in soy base sauce, and has a hint of sweet. Very succulent with plenty of umami.Another must try menu is their Bossam, pork lettuce wraps, which comes with slices of boiled pork shoulder with side dishes to add to your cabbage wrap.Ive learned from my last visit that they started making meal lots for some of their popular menu items which you can easily find at local Korean markets such as Hmart.
Havent tried their bossam, but I would say their soups are delicious and fairly priced. Staff is great as well.
The atmosphere was amazing, the food was more than exceptional and the dessert made the evening very special. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Great food, and a very lovely atmosphere. The staff were friendly and the food was both interesting and delicious.
Food is very delicious!!!Daegu maeoontang is the best dish and its even much better than any other best restaurants in Korea.
This place knows how to take care of their customers. Constantly with a super nice approach. The food is conveniently priced, regularly fresh and clean.
This spot is worth a try. They serve large portions for affordable rates. Constantly clean and with fantastic character. I highly recommend this place.
Solid korean food
Wow! We fell upon this while googling for a Korean restaurant in the area and what a great surprise. It was really authentic...next to the restaurant looked to be a bar and karaoke, which wasnt open that night. And outside, packs of cigarettes...if youre Korean, I think youd appreciate this! There were a ton of things that are not on your regular menus, so this gave it away that its the real deal, they must know what theyre doing. They even had a Special menu that was in all Korean! The nice lady was kind enough to point out a few items she thought we might like or should try.Im glad she did. One of the dishes was fresh baby octopus and it was SOOOO tender. I honestly dont think Id ever had this before, and I don t think Ive ever had so much octopus in one seating.Anyway, I feel like Im writing this review more of a reminder for myself to go back the next time Im around the area.Definitely dont miss this one!
Great food, venue, service.
This place always delivers. They serve excellent food for reasonable pricing, there no long wait even when the place is packed.
Pleasant surprise. Very good Korean takeout
Good food. Nice lady that served us. The middle age man is not so nice. Family business. Old man helping to serve and clean is nice.
We had fried squids, cod fish soup, and fried mackerel ... This is the best authentic korean food i had in a long time. The server/owner was so helpful and nice. Ambience was great. Nice cozy small restaurant.
The food was pretty good. The service was horrible. I dont know what was wrong with me, but I definitely had a different experience than other customers at the restaurant. I travel and when able I try to dine at Korean restaurants so I have a little piece of home. I got half a glass of water. All my ban chan came with my meal and she never came by to see how the meal was, ask to refill my water, offer hot tea or take away my empty dishes. Though she floated around the other customers, serving them as you would expect to receive a meal. I spent $28 for a single person so it isnt like I ordered the cheapest thing on the menu. Food was a 4, service was a 1.
Best Korean restaurant in Chicago area, great food, great price, friendly staff.
Nice, clean and delicious Korean restaurant place ever in Chicago land area.
3 stars because the server was being very rude for some reason. Other than that, the food was amazing. Definitely loved the beef rib and Kimchi and the tea was wonderful. Definitely coming back and hopefully we dont end up with that rude server again.
Bimpop was very fresh and so tastey
Its small place but very good restaurant
Serving is too slow and waitress wear mask,but it didnt look healthy. Better just take out the mask. I dont recommend this place;;
I liked bossam here. Alot. I tried to come this place each time I visit chicago. But, disappointed that they changed bossam. I like old bossam they had. But price was really good so i will give 4 starts
We get the Bulgogi and the spicy beef soup every time and it’s delicious. The side dishes like kimchi are really tasty as well. New favorite spot for dinner after work.
Such a nice, authentic korean restaurant! The price is quite good too. Its not your ordenary korean food. Very uniqyue and different.
Great food!
Great down and dirty Korean place. Staff takes a bit to warm up to you, but food is some of the best real Korean in the area.
Good Korean food.Just do not get their sul lung tang.
The food is great in this small but authentic Korean restaurant! My wife and son love the soft tofu stew (Kimchi Soondubu), but I always get Dolsot Bibimbap (rice with mixed vegetables and gochujang pepper sauce served in a piping hot stone bowl).
Good place to eat. One of my favorite spot to visit..
Food is good, but service is slow.
Price was reasonable and food was great
All food are tasty!!! They give you enough amounts of food. I love this place.
Best place to eat and drink
Authentic Korean Food... as authentic as it gets. Appreciated the variety of side dishes, as characteristic of Korean Bbq. And the Bossam combination of side spicy radish and garlic, jalapeno combo was perfect.
Set menu so delicious.
Wonderful food..Tonight I was happy..
I recommend their Bosam highly
The meal was delicious! We got the gam jah tang and oh-jing-uh bok-guum. The service was great and really friendly and it felt like being at home! Definitely recommend coming here for the great korean dining experience!
The owner couples were too busy eating their dinner to take orders for 3 tables. I ordered first but the other 2 tables foods came out first. Everyone was complaining about the food. Do not go here.
Good place for authentic Korean dishes.
These guys are authentic and fantastic. Must go here in Chicago;)
Good food. Good price
This place is the true authentic Korean restaurant that I found in IL. I wish this kind of place in the city....Yes, You need to drive at least 20-40 mins from Chicago downtown depends on the traffic. They have wide variety of menus, but their best is Bo Ssam which is steamed pork dish with lots of veggies and sauce. I love this dish....Pork comes out without any fat, so taste healthy.Their potato soup with pork is also very authentic....Other menu are good too like Bibimbap, Stirred octopus, etcIf you call them in advance (like 30mins before you arrive), they prepare the pork Bo Ssam dish and your table setting nicely.
Best food in the area.If you want a try out Korean style bar food, this is the place for you.
Its winter in Chicago and what better way to warm up than with a savory stew? The father-in-law had a taste for gamjatang so our little group of 4 headed over to Hal Mae. The gamjatang was as good as advertised. It overflowed with meaty pork bones, was spicy enough and had a wonderful smoky flavor (from paprika, perhaps). We also ordered bibimbop and a fish stew which were also quite good. We didnt have room for bossam but, based on this experience, Im coming back to try their namesake dish.Service was brisk and pretty average for a Korean restaurant. Oddly, we were directed to a table that wasnt cleared away yet even though there were other open and ready tables. My mother-in-law didnt react so Im guessing there was a practical reason but my mediocre Korean didnt catch it. Our teas were refilled a few times without asking so thats a plus. And last but not least, the parking lot is narrow. The opening on Waukegan is exit only. The entrance is on the south side from Emerson St.
Their Gham Ja Tang is amazing and they give you a lot of meat
Very good foodprice is cheap
Good food good person
Second best Korean food in all of Chicagoland, after Chosun Ok. The Bossam is great, as is just about everything else. Oh, and the best Bukeo kongnamul-guk around. The place is run by genuinely friendly people who appreciate their clientele. Love it.
The food was really yummy
This place is awesome like food in the city. Usually people get the intention that the city food is way better than the suburbs which in this case hal mae is hands down one of the top korean places that i would go to eat in the suburbs than the city. The squid dish is awesome....the dumpling soup is great.. .and the side dishes are good if u like vegetables. One thing that i dislike is the wait....u have to wait forever for your food so come when u have a lot of time on ur hands...otherwise try them dishes!
My favorite Gamja Tang place. Food is always really great, service could be better
Very good food
Horrible korean food Please Stay Away go a block down from here there another korean restaurant the waitress ran outside to catch a customer who forgot to leave a tip and was demanding for a tip pretty scary
Delicious and tasty Korean foods.
Great foods and great people.
Their gamjatang was really good.
This stuff is amazing
Very good food! Would come back again!
Yummy food
Great Food
Best soup
Not delicious.
Fantastic!
Good
I like it😂
It was so delicious just a few years ago that I ate it for the first time in a long time... Its a pity I didnt take a picture. Chef... Dont you like to eat? Vegetables are all succulent... Even if I make curry, I wont cut it that way. Not a single uncooked vegetable on each side... so disappointing.
The radish that comes with Bossam is so sweet that I ordered it to be a little less sweet. In addition, the scaffolding part of todays bossam meat accounts for 70%. I felt it because there were too many scaffolds, and it was regrettable that I didnt give them raw radish. I hope you use good meat.
It was a pleasant meal that I ate well and was treated kindly~^^ Thank you~!!^^
I accidentally saw and ordered the Bobiyo advertisement at the intersection, but I think we should share this restaurant unconditionally, so leave a review right away. Impressed by the bosss friendliness, impressed by the neat packaging and accurate delivery, and impressed by the food quality! I will use it often and often. Flourish ~
The food is really good.
Did you eat well
Great Bossam!
I really like the newly opened lunch menu.friendly
The food is delicious and the side dishes are delicious. The staff are friendly. The inside of the restaurant looks clean.
Gamjangtang, Bossam It is so delicious, and the boss is busy too.
One of the few restaurants in Chicago that knows a little bit of dust.
Bossam. Potato soup, the best sundae soup !! Im worried that its raw, but when I tried it, it didnt smell at all
It is highly recommended as a restaurant in Chicago.Meet Daegu Maeuntang.
All in all, the food is delicious.
Taste, service, price I like it all! It is the best potato soup ^^!
The potato soup is so yummy
There is a lot of guests at dinner time
Bossam is also delicious, but the potato soup is the most delicious ~
