So delightful. It’s a cool location with an inviting outdoor area. Great coffee and pastries. I had probably the best latte and best vegan donut I’ve ever had.There’s also a lovely gift shop with so many good items. I wish this store was replicated all over!Can’t wait to go again.

Not only is the coffee phenomenal and everything coffee should be, they have unique seasonal drinks! I love the atmosphere and it’s always clean and friendly staff. The kiosk allows for tipping the baristas which is good for them and you can opt to get no receipt to help the environment. They also recycle! And don’t forget the dog friendly patio!!!!

The coffee is great and the shop is beyond cute!! I love being able to sit here and work on my computer while enjoying some good coffee. And once Im sick of staring at my screen, I can shop around the store on the other side of the wall. I always love visiting

City and state always impresses me with their creativity, service, and stock curation. I love that they support handcrafting artists and are frequently offering new seasonal drinks and menu items. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is a great place to meet with a friend, sit and read, or work on a project.

Not “yay coffee”, more like “nay coffee”. The retail side of the shop was unique and interesting. We enjoyed that a lot. Things went downhill when we headed to the coffee side. The shop was not busy at all. We wanted to order a normal latte with cinnamon (very standard drink across all coffee shops - and believe me, we’ve tried MANY shops across the USA). We were told that there was no cinnamon to add. We were fine with it, and we placed our order. When it was made, the guy set our drinks down and called our name. When we walked up, we asked “which one is the pumperjack latte and which is the unsweetened latte?” He looked at them and looked back at us and said, “I don’t know”. We stared at him for a second. He said “I think maybe the unsweetened had more coffee in it.” He had just made them. And he forgot. And it wasn’t like there were tons of people or a high demand or a lot of pressure. And he couldn’t tell us which was which. And he didn’t really seem to care at all, or put any effort into figuring it out. He just left us to sort it out ourselves. Generally too, the employees seemed like they didn’t enjoy their work. It just felt cold and uncomfortable in there. Friendliness is so key to a customer experience in my opinion, especially in a coffee shop. Coffee shops are more community driven and interpersonal experience based. It can make or break a shop. I personally wouldn’t go back, and would prefer to give my business to Comeback Coffee. I’d encourage you to do the same.

Great quality drip coffee, espresso-based options, and cold-brewed drinks. Quirky and inviting decor and atmosphere. Could use a menuboard for those waiting in line and it would be nice if they would stock half-n-half.

If it was possible to give zero stars I probably would. While there is a decent aesthetic to the place and I love the Broad Ave area, I will not be visiting this establishment in the future.The employees both in the coffee and shop areas are very dismissive. Ive given the place several tries now, and I always feel as though I am inconveniencing the staff by placing a simple coffee order.The offerings from the coffee shop are below average and quite limited, so the overall poor attitude of the employees just pushes the experience right over the edge.Will not be returning, and will not recommend to friends or visitors.

The lattes are seasonal and unique, not the standard commercial syrup. This winter I fell for the Lovestruck latte and have switched to the Berry Lavender latte with spring. Bon bon is another favorite. Order online and park for curbside delivery. Its fast, friendly and way better than a long drive-thru line. If you like to hang out, they have great outdoor seating. Its my favorite coffee house.

The people that work here are absolutely terrible!! I had the worst experience with their barista. I am from out of state, and so I heard this place had “good” coffee. I went there the first time before Christmas same experience they were very rude I thought maybe it was a fluke day everyone’s entitled to one bad day, I came in today for the second time to try something different - same barista same experience!!!! This establishment has the worst people working there I would not recommend.

The barista was moving slow and it took about 30 minutes to make my drink. I ordered the Smokey salted caramel latte and it tastes like milk and water and was lacking the actual coffee flavor. Overall, this experience was a waste of my time and money.

Amazing vanilla balsamic fig latte!! The espresso was so smooth. Best latte I’ve had in a long time. Such a cute and clean place. If I lived in Memphis I’d be a regular here.

I’ve been a fan of City & State’s cool vibe and eclectic menu for years. The service and coffee are consistent and delightful, and I appreciate that they carry oat milk for my no-dairy/no-nut latte needs. It’s a great place to catch up with a friend, shop for unique gifts, or pop in for a drink & bite on the go.

Hit or miss for me. The service is always really poor and the baristas often seem like they don’t want to be here. A little rude to be honest.

I dont normally give 5*s. There is always something that could be better, but this place speaks to my soul. 👼It is a clean minimalist style, with just enough decor to be stylish. The menu has the basic needs. Coffee, dessert. I had the Mocha. It wasnt too hot, I didnt have to add sweetener, and it was a mild brew with plenty of dark coco flavor. The muffin was fresh, sweet but not too sweet. Perfect blend.Pros: Clean, quite, small menu, well made coffee, close to some cool artsy shops.Cons: Smallish, a little pricey, a lot of construction currently in the area, a little far if you dont live in midtown area.

Love this dog friendly coffee spot on broad. They also have a very well curated shop connected to it. I found a beautiful, handmade ring by From the Reliquary and I’m obsessed.

Stopped by for coffee on my way home. The staff was very friendly and the service was great! I had a mocha which was excellent! Nice chocolate flavor with a good bitterness. Went perfectly with my sweet apple treat that I had waiting for me.The drinks menu isnt huge, but large enough to have something for everyone.I didnt order any food, so I cant comment yet in their selection yet.

I travel for work nationwide. As I have traveled across the country I have searched out some of the best rated third wave coffee in each city I visit. City & State made me one of the better pour overs I have had traveling. I highly recommend this shop for someone looking for quality specialty coffee. The atmosphere was great, and I enjoyed every bit of my time and experience there.

Awesome vibe but not my cup of coffee. You may wonder, then why the five stars? Its because Im not a fan of light roast coffee and thats all that this place seems to carry. I do enjoy the green tea coconut latte and their toasted caramel and lavender drink. If you like bright, acidic notes in your coffee, order the lattes. If you dont, order a tea.

This is an odd little place. Its like a coffee shop with a gift shop in the front. Or maybe a gift shop with a coffee shop in the back. In any case, its got a very modern cool look and the beverages seemed to be top notch. I had the hot chocolate because honestly the coffee offerings were a little high end, with a lot of adjectives in the names. Prices were on par with Starbucks from what I recall.

Memphis first third wave shop, dedicating part of the store to specialty coffee and the other half to specialty gifts and goods.Their espresso is Intelligentsia and their single brewed coffees are from a guest roaster (rotating). They have your handful of great espresso traditional drinks as well as a handful of sweetened drinks. Small selection of eats are on hand.On the gifts side, there are so many great hand made or responsibly made items which is always changing!

Overall a nice atmosphere. But also there is a general attitude of being uppity and not very flexible with ordering. Nice place. Poor customer service.Flavor syrups are right behind the counter but you can ONLY use them with the set menu.. so I couldn’t get a squirt in my cold brew (normal coffee shop order)... even though they had the syrup right there.

Great third-wave coffee in Memphis is hard to find, but you can get it here. Service could be a bit more friendly but they pull a nice shot and are knowledgeable about coffee. Plus theres a cool store (boutique) attached with a bunch of things like jams, ceramics, clothing, jewelry, and all kinds of other great (somewhat hipster) stuff!

Great little place. Dog friendly patio outside, and a bright, modern interior. Cool rotating selection of single origin pour overs, and a chocolate chip cookie topped with sea salt that makes this place worth the trip even if you werent a coffee person.

A carefully curated coffee and retail shop - it is a gem on Broad Avenue. The staff are knowledgeable and passionate about coffee, and the retail portion is so cute. I can always find a gift/happy on the fly - or something for myself.

Theyre serving Intelligentsia coffee so I assumed having a pour over would be a good choice. Turned out to be watery flavorless and from what I understand in my 5 years of specialty coffee to be astringent. Honesty, the aesthetic of the place is rad and they have cool outdoor seating. Staff seemed a little cold but whatevs. Id say definitely go here to get your laptop work done or meet up with that buddy from church but if youre serious about coffee, find something else.

The coffee is excellent here; roasted well, carefully made, smooth & mellow. The staff are very sweet. And the locally made gifts in the gift shop are a nice addition.

I stopped by to pick up coffee for my husband and I. The coffee was top notch. There was a myriad of seasonal options and the gift shop had many unique selections. I was, however, very disappointed by the service of the male cashier. He didn’t say hello. He just asked me what I wanted and quickly moved onto the next person after payment. I paid a premium forcoffee (which I don’t minddoing if the product is good). I was hoping to receive friendly customer service. It was just a bad experience and made me want to choose somewhere else next time. The barista working that day was very kind and even offered a smile.

City & State doesnt have the pretension of having the best coffee in Memphis. They dont have to advertise it with an ostentatious attitude like some coffee shops do - they just make damn good coffee, and it may very well be the best in Memphis. Plus, theyre nice. Go here.

The coffee is good, though rather pricy. They have a pecan pastry there that is great. I personally dont feel like I fit in with the crowd (pretty hipster) but the staff has been nothing but nice to me.

Both cortado and latte used a disproportionate amount of milk and the espresso pull was pretty below average. This place exists to appease hipsters, not to create good coffee. Guess that doesn’t warrant a one star though.

We spent the weekend in the Binghampton / Broad Arts district of Memphis and found this coffee shop. Although we didnt sample any of the pastries, my wife and I both ordered cappuccinos, and stayed so long that I ended up ordering an Americano as well. The drinks were terrific. The atmosphere was great (very open, with a nice, large, patio). Dont forget to visit the apothecary while youre there; it has a large collection of soaps, oils, lotions and various funky gifts.

The pastries were deliciouser than I expected. Very good Cortado. Pleasant staff.

Ok to be honest this is just another coffee shop that, yes has about the same prices as Starbucks, but its not Starbucks. You get less bang for your buck (that bang is coffee). The quality of the coffee is decent but the serving size is pretty small. Plus I had a Gibsons donut and ordered a coffee to go with it and they literally kicked me out in a nice way I guess. They told me I wasnt allowed to eat the ONE donut inside the shop because I was promoting another business. I wont waste my money here anymore. Id be happier wasting it at Starbucks. Plus there are literally at least 50 other quirky coffee shops to go to in Memphis. Dont choose this one.

This is a cute gifts and coffee shop in Memphis. I was waiting for a table at a restaurant next door so I popped on over to City State to have a cup of chai tea. I ordered the dirty chai and it was delicious. It had a perfect blend of chai tea and coffee. The staff at City and State were very welcoming and the service was great. The store inside is very neat and has a big assortment of goodies—books, decor items, accessories, gifts and much more. In addition there is an outside seating area that is well decorated— perfect for photos.
