Love the food! They have a really interesting menu with cool names for the dishes. Their selection is broad and includes many vegan options. They even have Frogs Juice Kombucha! The bookstore side is quaint and really fun to browse. I sometimes drive down from Knoxville just to get lunch here.
They have an amazing, affordable and extensive vegan menu. Probably the best tofu sandwich I’ve had anywhere! The bread is made there and is wonderful! The homemade pickles are beyond my expectations- and I’m picky about pickles! I feel like this place is such a gem. I hope other people hightail it over there, because you don’t want to miss it.
Amazing bookstore/cafe up top and around the back is the movie store with lots of horror. Nice patio area in the back too for hanging out and having a drink while you do. The movie store has shows every month and brings in special guests like the producers. Check out this new hidden gem of Maryville at the five point roundabout.
This place is great! Tasty homemade food and they have yummy vegan options and fresh bread. Its attached to the bookstore so you can sit and eat your food and then go browse the books.
Lovely, homey bookstore full of treasures. The food is always fresh and tasty. The vibe is very warm and relaxing.
I love books and this store is a regular stop in Maryville. They have a huge, reasonably priced collection which includes Southern authors, local interest, a good poetry section, and all other genres. A great cafe is also a part of the store and is a regular stop for the locals. This is a friendly business where you are welcomed at the door.
I was never a big fan of a pimento cheese sandwich, but the one from Southland was the best sandwich that Ive ever had. Normally, ham and cheese was always my favorite, but now I have a new favorite. Sandwiches are stuffed full.
First time in Marysville. My impression, after an hour, is that this place is not only the best place in Marysville, it is the only place in Marysville worth visiting.
A nice quiet place to get some food, a coffee, and read a book. I fully intend to spend more time there and peruse their shelves more.
Neat little local book store with an attached cafe. The bread they bake for their sandwiches is really tasty.
Lisa is so welcoming and easy to talk to! I love the selection and I cant wait to go back!
What a treasure in downtown Maryville! Great food, awesome selection of used books and a helpful & friendly staff. A book lovers delight!
So many great books! And a super fun cafe with clever names for every item!
The food at the cafe was good and the coffee was very tasty. Unfortunately I didnt have time to browse the shelves, but they have a lot more books than I was expecting! However, this place does not have a designated handicap parking space out front, meaning that those with disabilities must park around back and either walk up the hill to the front or go up some stairs. This would be an easy thing for them to fix I think, though. Fun shop!
Love the food. By far the best sandwich shop in town.
It is a nice used bookstore. They have a very nice selection of used books.
Good folks, good food, good selection of books and vinal,The Dungon offers great video games and consoles.
Good food. Friendly service. Great placeWould recommend to everyone I know...
Great little cafe, really good sandwiches, awesome service!
Great Experience, helpful staff. Cafe food and drink were phenomenal!!
Awesome bookstore, a book lovers paradise. . Lisa was super helpful and had a vast knowledge of the treasures on the shelves. It brightened up our day trip and I found some neato goodies.
Nice cafe. Bookstore has huge variety of reasonably priced books.
Very nice. Ordered books I was looking for.
I have been familiar with southland books since they were located in the shopping plaza next to gattis pizza. I had moved away for sometime to the southwest and upon returning decided to hit them up and see if they were around. They have expanded into a great place to eat as well and have an even better selection of used books etc. I would highly recommend southland books not only for their selection and great food but because they are a staple of our community here in Maryville. Thank you Southland Books.P.S. When I was younger the climate of the town was a little less friendly in some ways and as a struggling teenager 20 years ago, southland books was my place of safety.
Eclectic bookstore and so much more! Great staff!
The day I went the café was closed so I will have to go back to try their food one day. They have soo many books of all sorts..The employees are soo helpful. If your not seeing a book you want just ask.
Great Food! Great atmosphere!
Just got to explore it today for the first time. I love used book stores like this and found many books I plan to buy. Friendly people too.
Food is great and it’s a cozy place but the staff at the cafe has some of the worst attitudes ive ever seen... I get people have bad days but they are not hospitable/friendly At least for the past two times I’ve been. Probably won’t eat here as much because of it
Terrible service. The lady would not even get up from the booth to take care of her only customer in the place. Will not be back. Books all over. Not really any good selection.
I absolutely love Southland! Today was a rough day. Lisa hugged me while I cried. I needed to eat, but wasnt too hungry because my anxiety was really bad. I got a BLT Salad and added mushrooms, olives, and cucumbers. It comes with grilled cheese croutons. They make a grilled cheese and cut it up into croutons 😍. I couldnt eat much of it while in the cafe (Im eating it now), but I was able to enjoy a delicious mug of hot chai latte. I enjoyed the foam on top and the warmth of the tea calmed me. Southland Books and Cafe is a safe space for me.My kids love exploring the bookstore and find interesting books. One time, they imagined their lives living together and used landscape books to design their outdoor area.
I love a neighborhood bookstore with lots of books and friendly staff that is also a hub for community organizing.
I always enjoy the time I spend at Southland and The Bird and the Book, which is downstairs. Lisa is very friendly and knowledgeable about all things literary, and Matt and Cat keep the cafe stocked with delicious food and coffee. The salads and freshly baked breads are phenomenal. I drive from Knoxville just to enjoy them. There is a cool vibe there that makes you feel welcome and entices you to stay longer than you anticipated. I highly recommend this jewel of Blount County.
Like a second home to me. Great people, awesome food, top knotch place to find that special book youve been searching for!
This place is wonderful! Ive never felt so at home the first time I went anywhere. Great food, and excellent people.
They are always very friendly and prices are very reasonable!
These folks are super kind, down to earth and you can feel the love they pour into their food. I always recommend the peanut chicken and broccoli 🥦 😋 on Wednesdays.
I love this place!! The building itself has its own personality, inside and out. Very unique and beautiful. The food is to die for and the staff are very friendly and make every visit comfortable and usually fun.
We love visiting this store. Great selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Great place to hang out!
I never know who Im going to run into when I go to Southland Books & Cafe but its usually somebody I know or somebody Ive met there before. Thats just one of the reasons why SB&C is a community favorite of so many people. You could easily spend hours in the bookstore but grab one of the freshest, tastiest lunches in town while youre there too. Lisa, Cat, Matt, and the other folks at SB&C go out of their way to make you want to come back again...and again...and again!
Love this place. No matter who is working, they are always helpful. If they dont have a book I want, they are more than happy to try to order it for me. The cafe has the best food, I absolutely recommend the BLT salad. Its the best!
I love this place! They have the best salads! Everyone who works here has become a good friend. I highly recommend, but if you come at lunchtime make sure you have more than a 30 min lunch break because they are typically busy and it might take a few minutes to get your order. They also do lunches for a local private school and the local farmers markets. They also run the Bird and Book resturant downstairs.
This place was so lovely! I loved the bookshop- very quaint with lots of literary treasures. The cafe was also great! Good coffee- in a mug upon request. Even the man behind the counter was the only one working and there were customers in front of me, my order didnt take more than 5- 10 minutes to complete. The chicken salad is amazing! So is the rosemary garlic bread!
Great place! Lisa is very knowledgeable and can give great book recommendations. The cafe is fabulous too. All the drinks have fun literary associated names.
I love this place. The food at the cafe is awesome, and there is always some cool event going on downstairs or in the bookstore. Their commitment to community is unsurpassed by none. I’ve made many new friends with patrons as well as the crew and always feel comfortable and welcome there. You rock, SBC!
Outstanding! Helpful staff make every visit fun, and the bookstore is full of an ever-changing collection of treasures. I love to browse! But I admit that Im drawn to the Cafe, especially -- best salads in town and the best pimento cheese also! Great service, excellent food, a real local institution.
Great coffee and cafe fare as well as congenial, excellent service. I appreciate the welcoming, casual atmosphere, and the bookstore/cafe setting is unique. I LOVE THIS PLACE!
Wonderful place. Loved the menu and the people. And the location - its the perfect tucked away neighborhood cafe.
We love this place! Lunch is always delicious and homemade and the atmosphere is welcoming and relaxing. Highly recommended!
Food was good, service not very friendly. I didnt feel very welcome.
Good food, good selection of books
Eclectic used book store. Lots of books at great prices. Shelves arent particularly neat, but you can search and find good things (although many books are pretty darned old). Theres also a small restaurant/coffee shop attched but I didnt purchase anything there.
Southland is one of my favorite places in Maryville. It really is the whole package- great food, fantastic atmosphere, and some of the kindest, most genuine people you’ll meet. The menu is diverse and I have never ordered a single thing I didn’t love. As a book junkie, I love that I can drink my London Fog in the cafe, or take it to the bookstore side and browse the poetry session while I drink it. Additionally, if I’m ever having a bad day, Southland is where I head. I know I can count on a friendly greeting and a smile, and the kind of genuine connection that’s really hard to find these days.Southland Books and Cafe is a staple to our community. They care about their customers and about people in general, and it shows in their events, their staff, and their atmosphere.
Good healthy food
No online site can provide you with an encyclopedic knowledge of books like Lisa can. Pair that with a scrumptious lunch and you cant go wrong. My favorite from the cafe is the Farnsworth (Pimiento Cheese Melt) yum!
Kind staff, good cafe and a welcoming atmosphere. Was a little chaotic in the bookshop but overall reminded me of a local McKays used book store.I would return next time I am in the area.
Always a good place.
Hands down my favorite place to work. Food is great, coffee is good, and the atmosphere is perfect for getting work done. Michael and the staff put the icing on the top of the experience. If you havent been here, you have to try it!
I (20) quite literally grew up in this bookstore surrounded by loving and lovely people. If you picture a small town bookstore, this is it. Coming here feels just like stopping by to see family. Everyone is great and so helpful. The whole store has character, given to it by the wonderful owner. I can only imagine bad reviews being given to this place by the close minded and hard hearted. Cant wait to stop by again when Im back in town.
I love this place. Fabulous selection and a most welcoming and informed staff. Great place to visit, eat, and just hang for a while.
When we moved to Tennessee from Ohio, we knew virtually no one other than my family. Southland Books and Café was like an oasis of calm, friendliness, and helpfulness. Lisa took time to talk to us and offer much-needed recommendations and referrals in the area. Matthew was always very warm and welcoming, as well as helpful. Cat quietly ran an excellent little café where one could enjoy good food, meet friends, or work in a cozy corner with some good coffee or tea. And of course the book collections were amazing. I could get lost in the nooks and crannies. They always seemed to have the obscure book I was looking for. For a book lover, it was like heaven. You could settle into a sofa with a good book and coffee, and often end up in a stimulating conversation with a new acquaintance. It was a very kid-friendly (and dog-friendly) place, which meant a lot to this grandmother. We felt very welcomed and at home there, when Tennessee was new (and sometimes strange) to us. Since then, some unfortunate personal family losses have taken their toll, but Southland is still there, despite some setbacks of their own, like a beacon of information, educational tools, integrity, and acceptance, for us and the surrounding community. I highly commend and recommend it.
What a wArm and friendly place! Matthew is very attentive and knows the meaning of customer service. The food is all homemade and delicious. We will be back!
One of my absolute favorite places in the whole world. Great bookstore with a very helpful staff. Great café with incredible food. All around worth a visit.
I have been coming here for years. Lisa is always friendly and helpful with helping me find what I’m looking for. I always love coming in for soup and a sandwich and a good book.
Jewel of a spot for hours of rambling through an awesome book collection. The food! OMG, best chicken salad! The best part is the community vibe created by the owners’ generosity of spirit.
Super excited to find this little place today. Lots of vegan options! The food and customer service was great! And BOOKS!
Cozy, friendly, scrumptious, and well-stocked, I surely recommend coming here. The book selection is varied, and youll never know what youll find (for instance, I came across a signed first edition from one of my favorite authors; yes, yes I did purchase it). As for the cafe, I partook of a savory grilled cheese and a perfectly blended iced coffee that accentuated the casual atmosphere. Make sure to bring your wallet, because this store is a place for money well-spent.
Very comfortable atmosphere. Food is delicious! All the staff are friendly and attentive.
I have been a customer for over a decade. Hands down the best selection of books in the area. Super nice employees in both the bookstore and cafe. Excellent customer service. Lisa, one of the co-owners, has encyclopedic knowledge of the literary world and where to find the hard to find. She will go out of her way to make your day. The atmosphere is laid back with good music always playing and friendly conversations abound. Its one of those places you can go hang out for hours. And the Cafe? The BEST homemade food in Blount County. Matt and Catherine always have a smile!! They take great care with their menu and make everything fresh. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves local businesses and great people.
Wow, I am so sad I have just found this gem so close to my house. Used books, great prices, very friendly people, and a cafe next door. The amount of options they have is ridiculous! I chose the cranberry chicken salad melt and it was THE BEST EVER. I have been craving it sense. Lots of sweets, foods, drinks. Ugh I cant wait to go back!
First visit there. Cozy place. Sandwich was great.
Great selection of coffee, teas and food. We are vegetarian and this place gives us a ton of options. Staff is nice and they have a bookstore. What more could you need?
The last real bookstore around. Incredible food at the cafe.
Loved the adorable cafe. Best pimiento and cheese Ive ever eaten. Pickles to die for. Everything homemade. Ill be returning soon.
Such a cozy place to eat a delicious salad or sandwich and then take your coffee and go read/work/explore the bookshop afterwards. My folks have said they feel like they could stay there all day. I agree.
I always enjoy going here. Great for finding and browsing through old books! Very liberal atmosphere, but the people are always friendly and happy to help you find things. I have never been to the cafe part, but it at least smells good!
You cant go wrong with a visit to Southland! This bookstore and cafe has everything you could want: friendly faces, great coffee, and a huge selection. Whether youre popping in for a quick bite or hanging for a bit on the chill couch, youre sure to find great conversation and a warm atmosphere. This is a Maryville staple you dont want to miss!
Sweet local place. Easy to spend a lot of time here. Best chicken salad also. 😊
They have a good selection of books, and may be Maryvilles only bookstore now that Hastings is gone. The thing is you cant beat them on charm. Its such a cute place to meet and have a delicious cup of coffee or soup. And they were nice enough to allow our daughter and her date meet there to make prom pictures and they turned out so fantastic.
I learned about Southland through Blank magazine and kept that article in my car as a reminder to visit the next time I was in Maryville. What a score! It is incredibly clean, historical, organized, and well-stocked. The cafe offers amazing variety with reasonable prices. A must visit again! Thank you for supporting local authors and events! Christina, Oak Ridge, TN
Great lunch spot & nice selection of books. They also do a fabulous job catering. Love Southland!
This is a wonderful place to get books - from syfys to the classics. They also have a genius cafe with wonderful food. They host events with plenty of locals and are always very friendly to the customers. A great place to hang out and chill and just read a book with free time.
Great selection. Great prices. Phenomenal staff. Good food. Chill atmosphere.
Southland Books has been a mainstay in Blount County for many years. What I enjoy most about Southland is that its not only a great place to buy books; its a great place to talk about books. Some of my favorite books are based on recommendations from Lisa, the owner. Southland is more than a bookstore; it is a gathering place, a crock pot of people, ideas and ideals. A Blount County treasure.
Great people, good selection of books and amazing food and fun.
Large selection of books. Well organized.
Awesome place. Lots of used books and the cafe has great food and coffee.
This is a unique place, not your average book store, this is a community spot, where you can buy a book, order a book and sit down and enjoy some delicious food, hummingbird cake, cookies salads, sandwiches (the bread is made at the Cafe)awesome coffee drinks, roasted by Lisa . And enjoy some conversations with the awesome people that work there and the owners Lisa and Catherine that bake amazing cinnamon rolls, bread sold on Saturdays at the Maryville market
I really enjoy browsing this bookshop. Lots of variety to be found and money to be saved. When you add on a cafe and friendly, knowledgable staff, it’s easy to see why Southland is a local treasure.
Great food, good selection of vegan foods if thats your thing. Great coffee selection, but best of all it smells like books!! Very friendly and welcoming.
They have the best salads! There are several different kinds - all loaded with protein and fresh veggies. The salads are huge - not skimpy about portion size or toppings! This is the best place for a salad in Maryville. You will not leave hungry!
Fabulous place! The food is amazing, especially the Humming Bird Cake! Awesome book selection, a must to visit if you are anywhere close by...and even if youre not.
You will likely find a treasure here! Wonderful book collection, tasty cafe and knowledgeable, helpful staff. There’s a great vinyl selection too!
I first started going to Southland Books many years ago when they were located by Mr. Gattis. I have followed them from location to location to their present location at 5 Points. Glad I didnt have to move all those books.I love used bookstores and Southland tops my list, huge selection, well organized, friendly helpful owner andstaff. The food and coffee are very good and now they have The Bird and The Book, great place to meet friends, enjoy some very good live music and enjoy a brew. Everyone is welcomeMaryville should be very thankful that these birds booked their stay in town. Great place, support them. Long may they run.
Great selection of books .. A book worms havenDelicious coffee and food. My favorite kick my shoes off and get lost place. A Blount county jewel.
Coolest bookstore around hands down.
Love the food + the people that work here. Very cute place!
