This food bank is staffed with two to three unpaid staff members and a lot of volunteers who work there because they want to serve the Lord. Its not an easy task to keep a food bank stocked with food. People dont understand that Good Sam runs off donations from churches and private donations. This money goes to purchase food, however, they have a limit on how much perishable food stuffs they can store and provide them to clients before items like fresh vegetables begin to wilt. The staff and volunteers are very aware of the freshness of the food items received and provide their clients with food that they themselves would want to eat; i.e. within the marked use by dates. Also, we are blessed to receive a lot of the food from Second Harvest, USDA and local stores. Most of the items received are free of charge, however, Good Sam does pay for some the canned items like vegetables (this is where the monetary donations comes in).Yes, the volunteers are normally seniors from the local churches that support Good Sam, but, they work hard and enjoy serving the Lord. The reason we have seniors is because most of them are retired, full of energy and have the time to donate to the food bank; whereas younger folks are working to provide for their families or taking care of their children. But, if anyone wants to join the corps of vlunteers I would suggest they contact Good Sam and just say you want to become involved as a volunteer.
They over work there employees, because I asked if I can volunteer but I was told that mostly the elderly volunteer there /here and that they dont have anyone to help, /they only have three people doing this, I been wondering why cant every week they have three different people ?/and they could have healthier and better choices in food like fresh vegetables or something but at go get some free food and other grocery and remember to bring your own bag 😉👍
