As always, helpful staff with a complete set of DIY materials for plumbing, electrical, and home improvement. Also a large collection of useful gadgets you wouldnt know you couldnt live without without visiting an perusing the well-organized aisles.
I came in looking for a mower, after waiting around for a clerk for more than 20 minutes, being passed by a clerk multiple times without any acknowledgement finally I was asked if I needed anything. When I said that I would like to have someone sell me a mower. The response was didnt you ask anyone? The Dorn Hardware I remember the clerks were taught to acknowledge every customer and ask if any assistance was needed. If I wanted to go on a customer assistance search, I would have went to a big box store.I ended up purchasing the mower only because the price was right and the respect I have for the Dorn family.
The most helpful people and the best prices. Stayed open a tad longer than advertised to help make sure I got what I needed. I am very appreciative!
Could not return a $10.99 purchase with the original receipt and credit card unless I gave my phone number and drivers license. Spoke to the manager and no explanation could be given why they needed to collect my personal information. I want to support a local business but I value my privacy more. I now I cross the street to Home Depot where I have no problems returning items with nothing more than my credit card.
Love this store and I love that its local. I was shopping for grass seeds and they had a great variety and everything I needed. The guy working at the store was super helpful and friendly. I will definitely be going back.
Theyve got a little bit of everything. So useful.
Dorn is my go-to hardware store when Ive got something I need to solve, fix or otherwise jury-rig because they are knowledgeable, honest, and their customer service is top-notch. Brody, at the Midvale store, recently helped me come up with a solution for a door problem and it worked perfectly. Thanks, Brody!
Ive always been able to find the parts I need there, but beyond that, I recently brought a PC case for a computer I was building and the floor worker there (I should have caught his name) offered to help me out for free to remove some rivets so I could expand a slot to fit the PSU I wanted. This was a huge relief as I dont personally own a drill and the fact that he did it for free (since it only took a few minutes) was the icing on the cake. All in all, I had a great experience there that really made my day (and my PC build possible) and I will certainly be going back there again when in need of new parts or service!
Very organized and helpful they knew exacly where everything was and answerd all our questions
This place is nostalgic and has been in business before I was born in the early 80s. I can remember my parents going there and I have spent many times there looking at new equipment and buying lots and lots of Christmas lights. They definitely know their stuff there.
This little store keeps holding on despite Home Depot across the way and a major never-ending construction project affecting their access, and now the pandemic. The reason is their huge selection of useful merchandise in a small space and their excellent customer service and knowledgable staff. The opposite of a big-box store. I make a point to shop there and hope they continue to survive!
I had to take a tour of the store to locate my items, but thats part of the fun going to a hardware store! I found things that I forgot I needed!🤔😄
Went in today with a pretty unique project I was having trouble with. Dave jumped in with a couple suggestions and ended up helping me complete my project in less than about 10minues. Thank you, Dave!
They are always as helpful as they can be and very polite. Ive seem them be kind to confused customers with memory issues and tolerate rude, demanding customers, too.
Great tackle shop, especially for Muskie stuff. I was a little disappointed in the selection of soft plastics, and how many empty pegs there were in some sections. But I saw a lot of good prices on lures and equipment.
Excellent. Super knowledgeable and friendly people. Great selection of products.
Can always find what im looking for, and If not the staff can find it for me.
Ive been going to dorans over 23 years now in the staff is always great knowledgeable and helpful then they are always professional
They have a real nice Pro-Shop with hunting and fishing supplies as well as live bait. Knowledgeable staff too!
Amazing helpful staff. I 1st went to home depot where they were unwilling to help. The employee at home depot even told me to go to Dorn. Happy I did. The staff at Dorn was quick polite eager to help
I was very happy to find this store. The staff were friendly and helpful and the selection was great.
I drive by Home Depot to get to this store.Help your self to a cup of coffee at the entrance and buy an ice cream on the way out. Wonderful service that makes you feel like you have stepped back in time in to a small town hardware store. You will rarely enter without a greeting and an offer to help. You will be amazed at the variety of things for sale, pots and pans, to nuts and bolts. You wont find a better selection of bolt sizes at larger hardware stores. Home Depot recommended I go to Dorn because they didnt have what I needed.Gavin solved my puzzling hardware problem and when he noticed loose nuts on the item I brought, tightened them all. Appreciated that, saved me another trip to the store. Never thought I would have a favorite hardware store but I do now.
I went twice in a week. The first time employees were offering help as soon as I walked in the door. The second time I could not find a single person to help me. After roaming the aisles for 10 minutes or so I finally got some help and got what I needed.
I moved into the neighborhood in early September of this year. I was in the middle of moving when I realized I needed a padlock for my basement storage unit. I was super glad this local business was close by! Less than 5 minutes away. I love shopping local. It is a well organized clean little store with decent prices and a pretty big selection of goods. A nice big parking lot too.Sadly I probably wont come back personally. The staff was clearly disgusted by my appearance. Admittedly I came in bright red and out of breath from moving single handedly all day. I felt like I wasnt welcome there by the looks I got and the way I was treated. However, its a great place to stop and support local business if you arent worn out and tired.
I love this place. I really do. The staff are so friendly. They know so much and will give you genuine, helpful advice, even if it means you buy less - they wont up-sell you into anything unless it is truly vital for what youre trying to accomplish. Do yourself, and local businesses a favor. COME HERE FIRST to buy what you need. Go to a big box store only if they cant get it. These folks deserve your patronage. Not because they put on an act for your pennies, but because they know their stuff, they want to help, and if you ask questions you will learn from them. My woodworking projects turned out beautifully because of their advice.
Went in cause I had a leaking copper pipe. Dave was all too willing to walk me through fixing it, but also gave me the confidence that Id be able to do it myself. Will go here first for all hardware related needs, highly recommend!
Amazing inventory selection. This is my go-to place for finding replacement hardware that is compatible with the style of an older home. You could spend all day trying to find what you want (meanwhile finding amazing things that you did think any store carried anymore), so ask the staff for help. In my experience, they are always helpful. Because of the wide range of products, they may only have a few of each, but they will help you complete a rain check order if you can wait a week or so for a larger number of items.
Great selection and great people to deal with. I was helped by a few old timers who have worked there forever. They were very knowledgeable and accommodating. The selection is one of the best Ive seen in a hardware store.
The best place to find that weird thing you need or need to replace. Theyll know what it is and either have it or know what to use instead. The staff are all very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. I cant recommend them highly enough.
I have a medical issue a I am exempt from being required to wear a mask the sporting goods manager was rude unprofessional and insulting I tried to explain my condition to him and he was uncaring. You will never see a dollar from me again
My experience here has been good to excellent. Although its a little sketchy because the fishing department is on the lower floor and the people there has been helpful. Great place to look for fishing supplies, equipment, tackle, live baits, lures, etc. Ive came here plenty of times and bough buck tail fur to make my own fishing flies. The inventory they have in stock is pretty good. A lot of selection. But, then again thats me. I dont need much help looking for things I know I want and what Im looking for. Overall, great selection, service and cool place to visit. Only improvement would be the appeal and how everything is laid out. Can be organized and less like a place where you horde things. But hey, seems like all True Value looks like that. Might be their niche.
I love Dorn Hardware! They have such an incredible selection, especially when it comes to nuts, bolts, and their ilk. Plus helpful, friendly staff. Such a pleasure to go there every time.
Nice selection and at times theres nice customer service but yesterday morning, 19 July 2017 at around 9 or 10am, I decide to go there with my two daughters to pick up some tackle. When I walked in, the cashier, (older man) was talking having a conversation with a customer. I get all my stuff and proceed to check out. The customer insisted that he had something to do but the cashier kept talking. At this point the cashier saw me at the register patiently waiting. As I waited a good 5-6 minutes with occasional customers behind me, another customer just walked in to the store. Immediately the cashier services him and ignores me one more time. At this point I clearly got the message he didnt want my service there. I ended up driving 30 minutes to Cabelas vs. a 10 minute drive to get what I needed. Dorn needs to get better workers down there with better quality customer service.
Yet another reason why your local hardware store is infinitely better than the Big Box stores. Extremely helpful staff just spent ~30 minutes with me, first 15 minutes searching for a very specific machine screw, then another 15 minutes custom cutting (using their band saw) the tiny screw to length --- all for two $0.89 screws! Just goes to show that the true quality establishments still see profit in the long term, beyond the single transaction.
Needed a a dead bolt re-keyed today for a project I was working on. Dave was able to do this in a manner of minutes while I waited. He was also very helpful with my questions. They were also significantly less expensive than any local locksmith for this service. Dorn True Value also carries many of my favorite brands for other projects and are my go to store when Im in a pinch. Great asset to Madison and surrounding communities.
I have been coming to this hardware store for 20 years, since I was a kid and would bike there and pester them for advice on how to fix things. They have everything, including the small obscure screws and parts no other store stocks. The staff is knowledgeable and can advise you on most or all projects. They can do some small repairs in store. The prices are not outrageous, many items are actually cheaper than the big box stores. This is what you want a locally owned hardware store to be.
As always great service! I should have stopped here first: wouldve saved me a few hours on the simple project I had to do. Thanks *again* guys!!
Friendly, helpful staff and had everything we needed
They do have a good selection. somewhat knowledgeable. Pretty pricey, skimpy on the bait (minnows) I go elsewhere. But they usually have anything you will need.
Great hardware store.Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Good selection of hard to find items at fair prices. Friendly place.
I lost a screw from my hand lens this summer, and the screws for it are ridiculously tiny. I went to Dorn and they were extremely helpful, going as far as to personally find screws that would fit and patch it together. Though I spent only $1.15 on that, and an additional ~$3.50 on some krazy glue, I still had the full attention and attentiveness of two employees for about 30 minutes helping me with my problem. Ill definitely be returning for all future hardware needs.
This is my go to sporting goods and bait store. They have been in business for a long time and know the area well. Sporting goods stores are vanishing and I like supporting this local business.
When ever I need those hard to find hardware, electric switch or even carbon brushes for my tile saw I go to Dorn Hardware.Today I needed a couple of old style slide switches and stainless steel machine screws for a 50 year old tube amplifier Im rebuilding, and after stopping at our local stores I realized I had to make the trip to Dorns. It was well worth the trip, I was surprised to see the stainless steel screws were almost half the price of our local stores.
Great hardware store and the bait store is well stocked also. Knowledgeable people and very happy to share their knowledge
Just picked up an aluminum-framed, full-window screen that we had taken in for repair of a bent frame from a gusty-wind incident. Tim made it look like new, and the price and turnaround were great! Thanks, Dorn!
Older staff helpful, some of the younger staff seem to just be warm bodies. Good place to get keys copied.
Update 8/31 while my earlier visit was terrible, I went back the next day over the lunch hour and had great service. I will go back again for sure, upgrading from 1 to 4 stars.8/30/2017 6pm visit. Im not an experienced fisherman. Today I asked for assistance to purchase a rod and reel, and I was reasonably asked and agreed to wait until a customer ready to check out was settled. After that, the clerk sat and chatted with friends and ignored me as I waited for 15-20 minutes, I left without being helped. Id like a rod and reel and would prefer to buy it from a small local shop, Ill try once more tomorrow and post the result.
Store hour is terrible, its closed way too early. Some day its even closed before the actual closing time. The bait store is where I go mostly. Please consider extending your store hour or contract out your bait business to a nearby gas station or something, youll make more money that way.
Great locally-owned hardware store. Many things in stock and friendly and experienced salespeople.
Great staff and service, usually have hard to find things
Employees are knowledgeable about hardware and are way more likely to help answer DIY questions correctly then big box hardware stores
Good service and not rude...... very helpful in fact. I wounder if there was a misunderstanding. Never had a problem.
Great to have the option to be able to go to an old fashioned hardware store!
One of the good ones. One stop shopping. Always helpful.
Good old fashioned locally owned hardware store with a great selection.
Really nice employees seem to also be knowledgeable.
Bait shopping downstairs. Better organized than last year. Wish it didnt closer so early on Sat.
They always have what I need and can tell me how to use it. I never have to shop at a big box store!
Great customer service had what I was looking for and more
While they seemed to have everything I needed for my projects, their customer service is why I will keep coming back.
Best ice fishing supply selection in Dane County! Very knowledgeable staff of anglers.
Great place 2 go & people very friendly!
The family hardware store has been disappearing thanks to the Big Box stores, but I dont like the Big Box stores because more often than not the employees are not knowledgeable, plus the stores are cold and impersonal. I dont often need a lot of hardware, but when I do its usually something quirky, and pretty much every time I need something quirky and head over to Dorn, I (A) find a helpful friendly person who knows stuff, and (B) knows what I need and where it is in the store! Today I needed a really oddball, very long, metric screw for an Ikea chair. The original sheared off and the chair was useless without a replacement. I brought the two pieces in, a cheerful young man headed straight for the correct aisle, opened the correct drawer, pulled out the correct screw (!!), and for a buck-sixty I was able to repair my favorite chair. Im sitting in it writing this review on my laptop. This is not the first time Dorn has worked a minor miracle for me, and Im confident it will not be the last.
Great help and very knowledgeable
Fixed a power washer very quickly and without a charge
Convenient since its right down the road.
Best spot for Musky baits in the Area! Great store to talk fishing..
Good to have a real hardware store in the neighborhood.
If you fish, GO HERE. I will only go here from now on. The guys who work there are AWESOME!!!!!
Good place to go for single items
Great selection and service.
Everything expensive is secured. Store worker says otherwise things grow wings and fly away. Had what I needed.
The guys that work here are complete idiots. First off they had no clue what they were talking about when it came to the part I needed. Second off, they refused to sell me the part stating that I could break my car if I didnt use it properly. Total morons. Save your money and go to home depot next door.
Easy to find what you need!!
Very helpful staff.
Great service
Always helpful and friendly staff
Great staff
Just had to show the sales associate the part in my hand and he direct me to the right Ill right away very clean place.
Neighborly, knowledgeable and kind.
Good selection and they dont nickel and dime you, but the staff were impolite and not helpful
Great people and very nice,
Great employees
Customer service was very rude without cause.
It cool
