Another field trip with my students! It was free to get in. They do have a donation box if you would like to donate. They open at 11 am. Very interesting museum. My students really enjoyed it.
A wonderful free (with recommended donation) museum! Ive lived most of my life in Wisconsin, so learning more about the history of this great state was a treat. The extensive exhibit about the Native Americans was fascinating, along with the exploration into the political history of the state. Highly recommended!
Great trip. Enjoyed the museum. The only issue is parking is difficult.
Wonderful well laid out exhibition all housed in a quiet peaceful environment were the lighting conditions changed and were appropriate to each exhibit. Well worth the visit the whole family enjoyed we all became fully absorbed with atmosphere. This musemn should be part of every families visit to Madison, we would most certainly visit the Wisconsin Historical musemn again.
Nice local museum. Great view of the capitol building. No fee to enter but donations are encouraged. Parking can be rough if you are not familiar with Madison, but there are plenty of parking garages in the area that are reasonably priced. There are three floors to visit filled with local and Wisconsin history.
This museum was free as it runs on donations. It has a lot of historical items I had not seen before. I havent seen anything on the suffragette movement in a museum prior to this one. They had a very thorough history of Wisconsin government. They have a lot of exhibits tucked into four stories so plan to spend at leastan hour if not more to take it all in.
Had a great experience here! Their website had the wrong tour time posted, but a volunteer gave me and my daughters a personal tour of the museum. Very cool information about our state right in the middle of Capital Square. We will definitely be back.
Free admissions, but donations will be appreciated. Great place to spend your time. A lot of history. Easy to access, but need to find parking there at the street. Staff very cordial and friendly. It is just beside de Capitol Building.
I visited the Wisconsin Historical Museum to see the Ever Gleam exhibit showcasing their assortment of aluminum Christmas trees. The exhibit was pretty small, but it was interesting to see some of the history of them. I didnt realize that this was their 60th year on display for the holidays. The exhibits rotate through. Check their website for events.
Took my middle school students there and they were fairly engaged the whole time. A lot to see and the guides were pretty good. Had a good time.
A bunch of interesting displays. One floor about native Americans in Wisconsin with again nice displays and information. Some other Americana stuff that was also nice to go through.
Very interesting. It is well worth your time if you are in the area. A great addition to any trip to Ians Pizza.
I visited this museum (along with a Neenah High School group) on a field trip. First off, the Museum has a great view of the Capitol and is perfect for pictures. The exhibits are really cool and some of them are interactive exhibits too. The tour guides were well-educated and fun. They did not just show us the exhibits, as we could have done that in our own time. They provided more knowledge and displays that kept us interested. They showed us a complete and total history of Wisconsin. In the past, I have not been entirely interested in Wisconsin history, but this was very cool. One of the best exhibits, was a Native American home that was recreated perfectly to show us how they lived. Overall, this was a very interesting and fun experience, one I would definitely do again. There is so much to see, and I regret not seeing all of it. I would definitely recommend this.
Loved this place. Per usual, only had an hour to bump around. The native peoples floor is one of the best Ive seen. The agriculture exhibits are excellent. I highly recommend visiting this museum if you are in downtown Madison.
The state historical society is a rotating content museum that offers a variety of historical galleries about state traditions and important events/people. There is a gift shop. Be aware that there is a recommended minimum donation box right before you go into the museum itself, it is advised (by staff) to donate to keep the place running. The content in the museum will rotate at times, and not all content will be the same throughout the years. Has bathrooms and an elevator for wheelchairs. The museum spans 3 or so floors.
I love history. Being from Wisconsin makes this place very special. I relived a lot of experiences growing up just walking around the museum
I remember coming here 4 years ago! I had such an amazing learning experience! I learned quite a lot about what Wisconsins history had to offer, and was thoroughly impressed with how interactive it was.I wish I had more money for the gift shop though! There was so much I wanted to buy!
Going to the Wisconsin Historical Society Museum was an informational experience with tons of exciting history on how Wisconsin was formed growing over the centuries. The exhibits showing items and history on what had happened truly extraordinary. The staff was patient and informational eager to teach especially with a large group of students, recommended to see.
I really enjoyed this Museum, parts of it are campy, but theyre mixed in with really cool interesting history. You can probably visit the whole Museum in about an hour, so it makes a good short Excursion. It is also near a bunch of other free museums, so if you want to spend more time Museuming, this makes it good stop on your tour. I was especially a fan of the aluminum Christmas tree exhibit around Christmas 2017!!
As a newcomer to Wisconsin, this museum was very informative and fun! The staff were also very kind and helpful.
One of the best free history museum Ive been to. Takes you through the history of Wisconsin from the Native Americans to the present. Great way to learn about Wisconsin in an intimate way. I highly recommend it for kids and adults.
We toured the museum on a Friday and spent about 2 hours browsing all three floors of exhibits. They have a lot of placards describing early Wisconsin history through native americans and the social and political history of the state (including a good dose of industry, manufacturing, ag related products). We had a grand time! And, its free! Also the display of aluminum trees is so nostalgic! My grandmother had a silver tree with the rotating light display on it. Finally, the shop is very, very good as well. Reasonably priced treasures and books.
I loved our guide: he was so good with the kids and spoke like a story-teller. We realized that teenagers would enjoy it a bit more if it was a bit more modern, but in the end they all learned something about Wisconsins history.
Chaperoned a field trip with my daughters class. The tour guide was excellent, and the displays were extensive and well done. You could easily spend a day there, or plan several trips to spend an hour on each floor.
Probably would have enjoyed it more if I hadnt gone on a day that the museum was hosting several school tours. Still a nice museum rich in Native American history of Wisconsin. Couldnt get to the 4th floor due to the students tours but was told the view of the Capital building is very nice from that vantage point.
Our tour guide obviously being a vet was extremely informative and very thorough. We had a very good experience
Its a very quaint museum. I enjoyed the floor dedicated to the Native Americans local to Wisconsin.
Great museum. Loved the third floor. Great gift shop as well.
Perfectly sized Historical Museum for our group of 4th grade students. Nice variety of exhibits and artifacts, which bring Wisconsin history to life. Plenty of helpful staff and restrooms.
The kids had a great time while learning all about our great state of Wisconsin! The underwater shipwreck exhibit was not what they expected, and didnt hold their attention very long, so Im very glad the rest of the museum was worthwhile!
Attended the Womens Suffrage exhibit opening and enjoyed the display and the tour
Very educational. A good way to understand Wisconsin and its origins, people and economic activity. Especially enjoyed the segment on politics, sufferage and the early formation of democracy in the state
A great experience! Staff were friendly and answered my questions well. I plan on seeing the rest of the museum next time Im in Madison.
Pancakes are considered as a side dish. Relatively inexpensive for what it offers.
This place is way more like a small indoor playground than a hands on museum. There is almost nothing interactive for children, certainly not much that is technologically educational.
The state history was nice exept for how simple the exibts weee aswell there was a sign posted stating free tours and the site says the museum is free. Once i entered it was apparent that this Museum was infact not free, they were asking for five dollars from every adult who enterd.
Good Place To Vist, An Its Only A Dollar.
Worth the visit! Entrance by donation ($5 for adults) - cant beat that. Four floors of exhibits covering politics, gender issues, manufacturing, interesting Native American history, and more.
Really great place to learn all about Wisconsins history of immigration, colonization, industry, politics, and native American Life.
It was a fun trip with the 4th grade class, the guides were knowable, and had many hands on activities for the kids to try.
Great Aluminum Christmas tree exhibit with old toy commercials! Lots of fun!
Great we will go back and spend a longer time went with a school very limited time
I give the Wisconsin Historical Museum a rating of 3.5 out of 5.0. Not because the exhibits were bad. It is because the exhibits were so limited and you are left wanting for more.
A great place to spend a couple hours of your day. There are exhibits from current day to the earlier humans on earth, agriculture and industry. Its also donations.
The guides knew their material and were very patient with our large group. I learned a lot, had fun, and would definitely recommend visiting!
Very educational experience loved it. I would highly recommend it.
A great tour was given to our 8th grade students. Our female tour guide was very informative on facts about Wisconsin and her presentations were engaging for our students.
A pretty cool place for the whole family. I wish it were just a little bigger but its lots of fun.
Went on a field trip with a group of 4th graders. Learned a lot and there was lots of fun information
Great staff. Educational yet fun experience
Really cool interesting place to see/hear/learn fun state facts & info....GREAT FOR A FAMILY-DAY DESTINATION!
Lots of interesting finds and neat exhibits!
All I can say is wow. Really an amazing place. I learned so much about the Wisconsin history.
Very well done museum highlighting history of Wisconsin. Good for adults and children.
Great place to visit. I would go back again
Hey, what can you say? Learn about Wisconsin history. When celebs visit, this is one place to find them.
Very educational. Kids loved it.
Very nice staffs. Very helpful. Although the display is not very special, still a nice place to go
This museum was interesting. I learned alot about Wisconsin history.
The museum is very informative. As a dairy farmer I really enjoyed the job with the history of farming on the 3rd floor however I was not impressed with the farmer clothes in the bin in front of the tractor. Farmers in the past and currently wear many hats like agronomist, dr, nurse, accountant, hr and the list goes on. We run our farms with guidance and precision planting off sattelites and have computers to assist us with every day tasks with employees and cattle. I felt we were portrayed as hillbillies with the clothes in the bin that the mother was having her children put on calling them farmer clothes. There are less people now than ever that have not been on a farm and know where their food comes from and small things like this arent helping the matter. Thank you.
Very nice museum not too big so little kids dont get bored.
Great museum, but I do have to say I liked the Veterans Museum across the street a little better.
Set up nice and family friendly. Displays actually keep your kids attention.
Pretty interesting place. Great for kids to learn more about local history.
4 floors of exhibits. Very family friendly.
Interesting displays, great little kids play area and donation based entrance.
Great place to take my grandson
Such a beautiful to tour or just walk in and visit!
Great experience for my kids, we really enjoyed it.
Nice museum with interesting exhibits. Entrance is by donation.
Nice museum. Had alot of displays of American Indians and such.
Loved it! Cool history.
It was okay, I dont like the entry is by donation either have an entry free or just ask for donations, dont force people to donate 10+ dollars
Wonderful museum to learn about the history of Wisconsin.
This is the place to learn about our fine State!
