Great museum, great carpets. Decent English descriptions for everything, and great views of the city.
Great place to visit. Full of islamic and turkish history
This museum is located near Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet Mosque in Sultanahmet Square. If you are interested in the history of the Islamic period and Turkey, you will enjoy here. It has various historic things such as Quran, carpets, calligraphy, lithographs, ceramics, glass, metal arts. Different time periods are specified in this museum separately and the objects of each period can be seen in that section.History of Turkey and ethnography is located on downstairs. If you want to see the whole museum in detail, you will need about 4 hours. Also, visiting this museum is free with Istanbul Museum Pass.
Lovely museum filled with rich Islamic art and history. Carpets are displayed beautifully and there are several ancient artifacts that must be seen. Walking distance from the blue mosque and aya Sofia and very reasonably priced at only 60 Turkish lira to enter👍🏽cafe inside also serves great coffee
We visited the museum early in the morning and we were the only visitors. It is beautifully constructed with interesting exhibits. Surely on the top 3 museums that are included in the Istanbul Museum Card.
Worth to visit definetely!
Good to better understand the expansion of the Turkish and Islamic civilisation through art. From early ages to the Ottoman Empire.
Everything very clean. The staff take good care of you. Lots of important history to be seen here.
Must go to place in Turkey. If you have any interest in history you would love it. Very informative. Me and my wife enjoyed every bit of it. 👍
Museum is fine. The staffs attitude was terrible though. First the cashier in ticket office threw the tickets in front of us. They closed the museum so early, 40 minutes before the official closing time, and the other staff opened the exit door for us at 7:00 pm while fussing in Turkish. These behaviors are not acceptable at least in such cultural places.
There is a free exhibition of Islamic art. Its on the left after the security check. On the right is the ticket control of the museum of 60 lira.
Interesting to a extent. Well curated and presented pieces. I was rather hoping for more beautiful Islamic art but it has quite a heavy religious slant. If you are a devout Muslim you may find this especially interesting and possibly even revering. Anyway, it’s a charming location, included in the museum card and has great views of the blue mosque.
It was ok. Won’t blow your sandals off. Lot’s of carpets, vases, relics. The part where they described the presence of hammam, clothing, jewellery and homes in the lives of Turks was the most informative. This museum is though way better than the science and tech museum, so rather come here.
This museum offers a vast collection of ancient Islamic scriptures including the Quran from different ages. This museum is very well maintained and organized, very aesthetic in a sense. My favourite part has to be the small remaining structure of the Hippodrome (ancient chariot race track) still preserved on the ground floor near the entrance. Included in the Istanbul museum pass if you got one!
The pieces available are beautiful works of Islamic art. Any Muslim would be joyed to visit. Theres even a free art show that displays historical pieces used in the Hajj, the spiritual journey. It tells a story as well, very detailed. Highly recommended.
Over 40,000 items are on display in the former palace of İbrahim Paşa (c.1493–1536), the most gifted of Süleyman’s many grand viziers. Paşa married Süleyman’s sister when the sultan came to the throne. The collection was begun in the 19th century and ranges from the earliest period of Islam, under the Omayyad caliphate (661–750), through to modern times. Each room concentrates on a different chronological period or geographical area of the Islamic world, with detailed explanations in both Turkish and English.
This is a lovely museum in a very nice building. It’s quite specialized and focuses mainly on rugs, pottery/ceramics, books/documents with a few bronzes, sculptures and other artifacts. It wouldn’t be my top choice for a museum visit in Istanbul but it’s a very nice collection, well laid out. There isn’t a lot of information about each object. Unless you are already into Turkish and Islamic art, I may give this one a miss. Although, you can probably see everything in 30-60 minutes.
I purchased an Istanbul card for 36€ from another museum, but was not told I had to visit all 13 museums in 5 days. I went to the Turkish and Islamic Arts museum and my card was not working. I asked the manager for help and he was extremely rude, dismissive and kept talking to the security guards about me in Turkish saying “I don’t know, I can’t help you”. Absolutely terrible customer service :( Such a shame as the museum is beautiful and interesting!
A must visit of those interested in Islamic arts and religious history. Some of the relics are similar to whats found at the Topkapi Palace.
Very impressive museum with amazing examples of islamic art, cultrure and skills. Similarly impressive are the wonderful carpets on display, many of which are several hundred years old and until today are witness to the incredible carpet skills of the ancient masters. Very well worth the visit. As this is one of the smaller museums in Istanbul you wont take more than 2 hours even if you are a thorough visitor and avid reader. However, definitely worth the two hours!
Beautiful place and calligraphy. See many hairs of Rasul صلى الله عليه وسلمAll I smelled was perfume...May Allah bless him
Very interesting museum. Very Nice to learn more about Turkish and islamic culture. I really like to visit again in the future.
Much better than the previous version, very good presentation of the exhibits. Dont miss the interesting excavations of the Hippodrome.
Great museum near blue mosque, Hagia Sophia, a bit expensive but worth a visit
A must if you enjoy history of the Ottoman empire and early Turkey. Best part of the visit was seeing the Mubarak hair of the Prophet PBUH
A must-see! One of the best museum I ever been!
A great little musuem right across the street from the Blue Mosque. Surprisingly uncrowded despite the location. Admission is included in the Musuem Card, so is worth a visit when youre nearby! The first floor is a large carpet exhibit and the second floor is a chronological timeline of Islamic art stretching back to the Prophet Muhammads time. Theres a courtyard with a great view of the Blue Mosque as well.
A little small but very nicely placed...some amazing islamic artifacts.
Beautiful place and full of islamic events descriptions and different eras.
A great museum, well planned with good explanations and a variety of exhibitions. I feel like this place is really underestimated comparing with other attractions in the area, and maybe thats good because it makes the experience of it better (no too crowded)
A very nice museum, hosting various ancient arabic carpets, writings and history. Its located in the tourist area of Sultanahmet just opposite from the famous Blue Mosque. There are various rooms to view various ancient and old historic items. The garden area overlooks the tourist square and the view overlooking the ancient town is absolutelt awe inspiring. A very nice museum to visit.
Went there as it was part of museum pass. Interesting to see that the museum incorporates the 3 pillars that is free for all to see as part of the Hippodrome.
Worth coming for a broad overview of the areas history, the many kingdoms and dynasties ruling the Arabian Peninsula and Anatolia. Some artifacts are amazing, but the descriptions could use a bit of polish. Do visit.
Extremely nice place and we easily accessibleWell sectioned and has descriptions in English and Turkish.
Definitely worth seeing and not at all expensive.
A one place where many old great Islamic items from the great times of islam, the tags just says when each item was found or from which period and thats it, no explanation and there is nothing that explains what is written in the transcripts
Introducing each historical empires feels like reading history book. This is the place to know the melting pot in Middle East through different empires
Fascinating and beautiful collection presented on a very useful manner and housed within a gorgeous, historic palace.
The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum is a museum located in Sultanahmet Square in Fatih district of Istanbul, Turkey. Constructed in 1524, the building was formerly the palace of Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, who was the second grand vizier to Suleiman the Magnificent, and was once thought to have been the husband of the Sultans sister, Hatice Sultan.
Full of historic wonders, although a bit repetitive.
Great museum that deserves more attention!even cats work here!

Best experience in museum. Great museum.
The museum is quite good, especially the etnographic section. Its quite interesting for people who like history and the explanations under exponents are good.
Good place to learn about turkish history and to see many beautiful and rare items
Its just OK, if dont have so much time in Istanbul just skip it, you can find many more interesting places within walking distance. There are nice carpets, scripts inside.
I was amazed to see how much Islamic history there was. The actual footprint of the beloved Prophet (S.A.W) made this a “must-visit” whenever in turkey!
Spiritual, specially the man whos reading Quran there, what a voice.
There are a lot collection of rugs.
Who knows inside this museums, they have Prophet Muhammads beard, and the heritage of caliphates from The Rashiduns, Umayyads, Abbasids, and Ottoman, give it a go, its very worthed
So much historyIt is very organized!
The museum formerly a residence of Sultan Sulaimans right hand. The collection consists of important islamic relics, manuscripts and scriptures from different Turkish era. The rug collection is amazing! You can use the museum pass here.
Mostly carpets and Qurans. Some of them quite nice, altghough in my opinion this place proves that religion does not go hand in hand with good, creative art.
A thematical and historical museum, great to find many Islamic art during many periods here
The place was Ibrahim pasha castle, used now as a Museum for Islamic arts and collections of religions artefacts from different Islamic periods
The museum of Islamic art has a great collection of religious artefacts and Qurans from the 7th century to the 18th.As it used to be a palace before its conversion the museum premises themselves are historical and worth a viewing.
This museum issue a paper for artists to send their works abroad (called Expertiz).. For my experience they were very helpful, I have got over seven nice staff working like a cell of bees to make my process done very smooth and shortly.. All respect to these great women working there.
Great and rich with old Islamic things from all ages and countries, by This date the first floor is under maintenance only the 2nd floor is open and available to visitors
Really nice museum with artefacts from different eras in Islamic history. The museum itself is located in a former palace and it is also possible to see remains from an excavation of the Hippodrome inside. Great place to spend a few hours!
Fantastic place have to visit during your trip to Istanbul
If youre a muslim, entering this museum may make you crying. It has a huge collections of Islamic historical stuff. The most amazing one to me was the old Quran and the hair of the prophet.
Dont miss upstairs view from here to blue mosque
Great museum 🥰😍.Dont miss this.
Good for a weekend museum fix, especially during COVID times when us longer term tourists are looking for things to do..
A pretty big collection but not very memorable.
Great. Very interesting and beautiful!
Good to see if you have time
The place where history comes to life. Representative of great Islamic history
Good place to understand more about Turkish culture in a broader way, specially on how this region evolves within eras and their traditions like religion, hamman, coffee house and many other aspects. Right by The Blue Mosque is a good place to have a rest and learn something during a hot day.
Beautiful .
Limited but nice, good multi-language presentations
Okay if you love the Quaran
I love this museum,a lots of history about islam.Alhamdulilah.
Tucked away at the slightly less-trafficked end of the hippodrome, this museum is a very nice way to spend an hour. Great exhibit on the recent history of Istanbul and the earlier history of the wider region.
You cannot be a predecessor to someone who hasn’t bern born yet. Please fix.
Amazing collection of artifacts
Turkish and Islamic Art Museum is the first Turkish museum covering the Turkish and Islamic art works wholly, which is exhibited at Ibrahim Pasha Palace in Fatih village of Istanbul at Sultanahmet Square. For more information and photos please see Sightsee of Mom blog articles for family travels ;)
Interesting Museum!
I’ve never been to this site but I would really like to go 5/5
A lovely museum 😄
Fantastic museum albeit quite smaller than other museums in Istanbul. Absolutely worth a visit and be sure to enjoy tea or coffee afterwards on their terrace.
Lots of wonderful arts and history to be exploring!
Modest in size but an excellent source for understanding history and development of Islamic empire and the interelationships with adjacent empires.
