Great space, awesome to be back after covid closure. Sun & Sea performance really great presentation. Props to the great staff on the door and check in.
Great artistic exhibits hosted in the center of Little Tokyo. I spontaneously stumbled upon an exhibit hosted here after lunch in Little Tokyo. The staff told me that the tickets were free for the day. We were very lucky to see the beautiful creations of art inside. The building exterior also offers a great backdrop for creative photo shoots.
This museum is great. I visited a Saturday and the entrance was free. I enjoyed a free tour on one of the exhibitions that was conducted by an art professor for free. Its a minimalistic but warm museum. Its the most relaxed museum I have visited. I felt at home... The employees are very nice and welcoming.
The museum that established modern art in LA. Hard to believe, but there was no dedicated museum to modern art in Los Angeles until this was founded. I was an initial contributor and have been a member since. I am so proud of MOCA and my city. This location was established as a temporary museum (The Temporary Contemporary), while the building by Arata Isozaki was being built on Grand Ave. This repurposed Police garage however, proved so popular, (because of the laid- back atmosphere) that it was given permanent status.
The new Pipilotti Rist exhibit is absolutely the most immersive art installation Ive experienced. All your senses will be stimulated. A definite must-see exhibit.
This museum was really nice, very simplistic so that you can focus on the work from the different artists. I liked that there were a bunch of people who worked for the museum who were there to help you if you had questions or to show you interesting aspects of the art work as well as talking about it with you in depth.
Roy Lichtenstein is one of my favorites. So it was a joy to see so many of his pieces close up. I also enjoyed Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Kara Walker, Glenn Ligon and a host of others. I especially like a piece by Cecily Brown.
Wonderful museum. The artists represented were inspiring. The staff was available to answer questions whenever information was needed. The museums flow and curation has a beautiful movement, each exhibit seems to be presented in the most appropriate space. Thankful for the powerful relevance of the artists work. Great outdoor area to enjoy. Only suggestion would be that the entrance was hard to find from the sidewalk. Maybe even using better signage to direct pedestrians around to enter through the parking lot might help. First time visiting during their free weekend event. Excited to make a return visit!
Beautiful museum. Its fantastic combine between art and modern technology. Wonderful experience
Absolutely wonderful!
MOCA could do a lot more with this space. Barbara Kruger’s murals, still, again, over and stale. Is she on the board? I think a lot more interesting artists could use the opportunity. Oh yes, Klaus Biesenwhatever, another Kevin Newsom type who managed to collect a fat paycheck for doing absolutely nada (not the Basel Miami show). Now a show by an artist from Switzerland and omg, she’s white. Soo exotic.
It is always fascinating to learn new things and remember old experiences. The place is an oasis of learning and space of solace in the middle of a very busy but beautiful city of Angels...
Paid $8 admission with a Student ID. On a rainy Wednesday afternoon the museum was very quiet and peaceful with few visitors. Two artists were featured in the exhibits I saw. This I appreciated, as it gives one a fuller picture of the artists style, interests, and thoughts. Also, for those who use public transportation, its easily accessible via the metro gold line.
The Geffen has some interesting installations and artwork. Its part of the MOCA, so I was happy to see these two museums in a day for $15 usd (includes both). I think thats very reasonable for the amount of work you get to see. Its also nice to walk across town through Little Tokyo to get the other museum. The Moca was a little less interesting. There was not as much to see. However, its still worth the trip.
Fabulous date place, very calm and surreal, and Geffen Contemporary at MOCA doesnt disappoint. Phenomenal exhibits and contemporary art that will blow you away. I highly recommend this museum, absolutely stunning.
Lovely collection on display. I enjoyed my visit and the collections and pieces on display. At the time I went, many of the works on display were political in nature. Im good with political but at some point it just becomes too much and begins to cross the line into creative propaganda.
Very interesting! If you buy a ticket to the MOCA dtla, it also gets you into this MOCA as well. It was a unique experience. Its very dark so wear flat shoes. The employees have flash lights for areas with steps but you should still walk slow. The exhibit itself was cool too! Definitely a must see!
It is a nice space, although smaller than I initially imagined, which is not always a bad thing. I found the space light, airy and manageable. There is a huge main room with a smaller offshoot room and a separate section if you cross the reception area. The staff are helpful and friendly and the collections interesting and varied.Take time to sit outside and enjoy the sculpture and space, as well as visit the shop which is full of visual delights and easy to part with cash there.
Situated on the corner big parking lot across street from the Veterans Hospital Dart work outside is amazing nice place to go
Great stuff. Always easy to get to off Gold Line. And TAP card gets you 2-for-1 Admission.
Great exhibition space in Little Tokyo. The galleries are larger in scale than the downtown location of MOCA, allowing for more diversity in the exhibitions. No permanent collection at the Geffen, so check the website to see whats on view. Exhibitions vary in quality and scope. Note that a ticket bought at the Geffen will also get you into the downtown branch the same day, and vice versa.
Museum of Contemporary Art is awesome! Me and my husband stopped by in this museum and we really had fun watching their art collections they are really interesting and impressive. Actually that was our first time to visit the museum but we never regret it because it was never boring. The only problem is the parking area but once you get to the inside of the museum you will forget the parking hassle.
Free free free... Art is for everyone! Go enjoy some free art. ❤
For a museum that has a whole wall with the inscription no more boring art, I feel you are falling short. A room with only a row of several suitcases. Another with a sawed-off tree that is bolted back together and supported with metal bracket, and yet another with a derelict aluminum wreck of a tracker in another room, leaves me wondering about no more boring art. Please!
The art is really cool and Im glad I went, but for a building that size, the amount of art felt little. They could have definitely used the space better to add more. I finished the entire wall around and observed every image in about 20 minutes.. and yes I take the time to observe images. I dont just scroll through like an Instagram post.
Very nice exhibition of contemporary art. 15 dollars for both MOCA locations well spent!
Contemporary art museum at its finest. Great galleries and exhibits. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Admission price is affordable. I highly recommend you visit Geffen.
Nice modern art museum
It is a great place to walk around! It was smaller than I expected and for me 2 hours are very plentiful for the whole visit. It is truly modern arts and hard to comprehend sometimes but it will take u to another world of wonders and unrealness. Very good getaway.
A really great modern art museum, and entry is free.
The idea of The Geffen sounded a lot better than it actually turned out to be with the described converted historic warehouse space. From the moment we entered the difficult to figure out entrance to be ignored by the staff who acted inconvenienced that we were trying to pay admission, we knew that we were not going to enjoy this museum. While some of the artwork was interesting and thought provoking, most tried too hard to be different and came across as either extremely sadistic or as boring as a library bookshelf. Next time I venture near Little Tokyo, the Geffen at MOCA wont be on my agenda.
I had a good time I seen a lot of nice art work and the people that work their were nice to
I came here to see the Douglas Atkins exhibit. The exhibit space is set in a revamped warehouse located in Little Tokyo. There was an array of mediums such as film, sculptures and photography all from one artist.Im definitely looking forward to exploring the other MOCA locations.
Nice place...if you go to MOCA your ticket gets you in here too...can do 2 for one...some fun paintings here!
For those who like contemporary art, it is a nice place to chill for a little, especially on Thursday when after 5pm it is free but donations are welcome. I personally am not a huge fan of contemporary art, as I went there for a Japanese tea tasting, but In would recommend it to those who enjoy a contemporary art museum.
Pretty cool but i usually wait until they host particularly interesting exhibits
We attended the exhibition of Adrián Villar Rojas: The Theater of Disappearance and had the chance to jump into a free guided tour. This former police car warehouse is huge and perfect for this kind of monumental installations. For this particular event, visitors had to walk in the darkness and explore the artworks with their phone lights, super exciting!
Call me old fashion but if I will date someone, it will definitely here in this museum.. There is a catch walking and getting to know in a sweet ambiance like here in The Museum of Contemporary of Art. Awesome experience :D
Nice contemporary art museum. You also get admission to the Geffen and also the MOCA on Grand with the same ticket.
Great space, a lot of staff to help, art was good, not great.
This will be difficult to review, if you like this type of art then go for it but you were wandering around like me and accidentally walked into this museum youll probably be confused on how this industrial looking building is being used in the most bare bone sense to pass off as a museum. You will leave contemplating on what you saw is art but perhaps that is a victory for the museum.
A good place to spend half a day in new York city.
To tell you the true thats just a short cut that I take on my way to the exchange, maybe someday Ill stop and take a look around...
Interesting exhibits currently displaying two womens artistic works. Good location next to JANM, near Little Tokyo.
Unique exhibit of non traditional landscapes in freezers. Great museum space and gift shop. Great staff.
Ive been coming here for years and can never get enough. The area is clean and user friendly. The only drawback I can think of is that its not as kid friendly as I think it should be. If you ever find yourself in the Los Angeles area, I wouldnt say its a must see, but more like a try to see.
I love this museum, when i finish the tour i felt something special in my mind as a new think.
Could have a nicer price, but good stuff!
Always enjoy visiting the Geffen Contemporary. Visit the 442nd War Memorial that is just steps away. There is a free shuttle that goes to the DTLA MOCA that stops here, how convenient!
The Museum is very good rightly positioned. We were lucky to see Andy Warhol work Shadows. Staff is very helping. Canteen is good.
Went on thursday (free from 5-8pm) and grabbed a quick bite at their cafe. The sandeich was amazing, would definitely try out other dishes if i come back. Went on a free interactive tour and the facilitator holly was such a joy to have. She was enthusiastic and knowledgeable as well. Great pieces there
Who said LA doesnt do art? Excellent video installation by Doug Aitken (worth checking out), great space, large enough to keep you enthralled and entertained for several hours. Free between 5-8pm
We had an awesome time at MOCA. Especially the one down the hill by Little Tokyo.
Rare warehouse art space + museum quality exhibitions. Always interesting, always inspiring.
It was great to be there at this time of the year because it is free the weekends until March 25th. Otherwise tickets are $15 each.
Nice enjoyable date for anyone who is open minded and has a taste for art, or just heavily intoxicated
Free entrance, good stuff but not much. Its an extra if you already went to the original MoCA
The Museum is lovely and the art was very enjoyable but the young lady working in the ticket booth as well as the persons manning the desk when you enter were so unwelcoming that I will NEVER return to this location, better off at the Getty. I actually apologized to the girl in the ticket booth who was so obviously annoyed that she had to help customers she rolled her eyes. Very disappointed with the service.
Excellent cultural icon for LA. A must see along with the Natural History Museum. Skip the free days. Its nuts and you wont be able to absorb anything. Go!
Came to see some art on a school field trip. I dont understand art much, therefore I was not very amused. The sculptures and art pieces being displayed were interesting.
Get a tour from this old lady with cool glasses. She will facilitate a great conversation and make you realize the potential you have to get into art.
Very kind, it’s a good place for art students.
A great venue for Art and close to other museums in downtown LA, smack in the middle of Little Tokyo!!
Great musuem space in the heart of Japan Town. Visit and see interesting contemporary art and head to Japan Town for some great food.
Shade, bathrooms, helpful staff, you can check in your drinks, comfy couches next to a shuttle back to the BROAD, and conveniently close to the metro~
Not quite as good as the main MOCA Museum, this is still a nice stop on an art tour. Only a mile away from the main museum, and The Broad, it is free on weekends!
Good way to spend an hour. Love that it was free.
Great experience. Interactive art
Museum was much smaller than I had anticipated, but the offerings were great. Nice place to go on a date!
Free on Thursday after 5pm, a place with lots of visuals and contemporary art. I enjoyed all the exhibits
The geffen is quite large. The entire collection is one exhibit but it contains many video pieces. I could probably spend an entire day there without thoroughly watching everything. The space and the exhibit is great, and the location is excellent (next to little tokyo)
I like to come during my lunch break. They always have great exhibits.
