Whenever we are in town we visit the Apple Pan. Boy are things different this time. You can walk up and order at a window! You can pay with a credit card! It’s all pick up and outdoor dining only. We love that it’s still here and that they are open. We will support them whenever we can. But, I sure hope some of the old things come back. We miss the wait staff, eating at the counter, drinking out of a paper cone cup etc. They are still one of the best burgers in town; we will be back.
Ive been going here since I was a baby. Their is amazing. They have their own unique style and flavor to their burgers so its a must try if youre a burger lover in LA. Their pies are also amazing. Right now they are still outdoor eating and pickup/to-go only but when its open again, do not go with more than 3 people. Their only flaw is their limited indoor seating and its kind of a free for all to grab seats. You have to rely on the kindness and honest of others for who was there first. Their employees are wonderful, but unfortunately dont help with seating. 1-2 people is ideal.
Covid friendly. Love that I can order ahead and go to a separate line to pick up and take food to outdoor dining area. Tables are spaced and after each seating they are wiped down and sanitized. If you use restroom inside, you sanitize hands before entering.Hickory cheeseburger was great. Chunk of lettuce was crisp and crunchy. Fries werent as hot as they could have been but the serving size was enough for 2. Wish I would have had room for pie.
Apple Pan is an LA Classic. A really iconic Southern California burger with sauces that are unique and excellent quality.Great fries and of course the Pie! Not too sweet, not too huge, just a nice slice of pie to cap off a meal. Always Apple, usually pecan and cherry, but a lot of seasonal flavors like peach and strawberry and rotating cream pies like chocolate, banana, or coconut.
This is a place for old-school diner-style burgers. No dumb food gimmicks or dumb art on the walls for social media, no annoying techno or indie music blaring, no pretentious hipster gastropub presentation. If you know you like old school burgers, then this is for you. The burgers are great, the pie is good, and the people are friendly. The place is cosy right now that there’s outdoor seating. They finally modernized a bit and you can finally use Apple/Google Pay to buy food now. That’s about it. That being said, it’s pretty pricey for a burger. Bang for buck this is not. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area but there’s plenty of other places in LA that are better tasting and better value.
Burger is a burger but nothing spectacular. Pretty decent.Apple pie tasted bland and watery. Overcooked thin crust. The slice is a good description of a pie having depression. Pretty dissapointing for a place known for their famous pie.Only think satisfying was the coca cola.
The Hickory burger never gets old! Been coming for years. Open for business takeout with outdoor seating in former parking lot.
Apple pan is known for its delicious fresh made pie assortment but thats not the only reason to go! Apple pan makes some of the best hamburgers in all of LA hands down. They are big, fresh and super tasty. They also have crispy delicious fries that are worth the trip alone! Everyone is friendly and helpful, especially Ally at the takeout window. She offered up perfect menu suggestions with a smile.
This is the best casual burger joint ever. The counter people are real characters. The burgers are huge and delicious. The chicken sandwich features perfectly prepared meat; moist and tender.. You can relax and laugh out loud with friends here without risking managements ire.
I hate being one of those “I don’t get all the good reviews” people, but that’s my exact thought after eating here. With so many 5 star reviews and write ups I was excited. The building is really cool and I appreciate the history but the food is mediocre at best. I liken the burger to what you make if you get ground beef at Vons, don’t season it, and put it on a bun with lettuce, tomato, cheese and pickle. No more, no less. Definitely not worth $10+ for a small cheeseburger. The fries are fine, they don’t come salted and they have a very thick “fried” crust to them. I tried 5 pies, banana was my favorite, pecan, cherry, and boysenberry were fine. I didn’t like the apple as it tasted sour. I unfortunately won’t recommend.
We loved 2 steak burgers, The burgers were delicious and tasty 👌👌. Im going to have another one before my flight back to the UAE.
Went in with high expectations after a friend of mine recommended it. But overall it was just okay.We ordered the the two burgers, fries, pies (apple, banana cream, chocolate cream). The burgers were decent but nothing stood out for me (maybe except the special sauce). Friends thought the same. Especially from a $10 burger, I expect more. The fries were well fried and plentiful, but not salted enough. We had to sprinkle more salt to make it taste good. The apple pie was a big disappointment. Maybe it tastes better warm, but the way we got it tasted very meh.Chocolate cream pie was decent. Tasted like mousse. The banana cream pie was the best of the lot - Id highly recommend trying that one out and skipping everything else lol.
Super cool spot to check out in the west LA area. The Apple Pan has been around for a long time and they have the best hamburger 🍔 My wife and I grab two burgers and fries. The flavor was really good and the ingredients were fresh. You can watch them cook your food from the outside area. This place believes in quality or quantity for sure. They have outdoor seating in the back or walk up counter to go. I can’t wait to go back and try their pies.
I was first recommended the Apple Pan by a family friend, now deceased. I remember the way he said it, the way he talked about many things he liked. I imagine he spoke with a similar cadence when giving his wisdom, grounded in a mix of the spiritual, the worldly and the clinical in his capacity as a prison psychologist held fast to faith for the outwardly and inwardly damned. At my first visit to the Apple Pan, I was finished with one of my several jazz piano lessons with a middle-aged woman who was some older more famous womans protege, the older woman being retired and unavailable to teach me. I was close to 18 and still didnt drive or pay for myself and my mother was there to take me to the restaurant. Parking next to a curb eviscerated by a tree. it was that kind of tree you find all around the Greek, swerving tentacle roots that run yards in all available directions and vast thick canopies of large, waxy, dark green leaves supported by great venous trunks. The curb was too high to open the passenger door. The smell of the Apple Pan led the way.The place was packed but with high turnover. we stood in line outside a small building that may have been decades older than the 80 or so years it had been owned and operated by Apple Pan. Inside, the bar enclosed on three sides an amusement park of whirlwind operations. The first decade of my time going there, a stoic man always took our order. Mother remembers him as curt and impatient. I didnt see him last week. I ordered the hickory burger, and was thoroughly impressed by its unique strong and smokey flavor. It may be one of my favorite burgers in Southern California. Of equal quality is their fabled banana cream pie with its different layers and ideal sweetness. The Apple Pan, located near a freeway intersection known to break souls and shatter dreams under the vice grip of its gridlock, is an island oasis, an implausible holdout among the mad faceless development heaving endlessly around it.
The Apple Pan is worth finding @ Pico & Westwood (on Pico) next to the large Guitar Center store. Good+ burger (single or double patty) made to order *& get their fries and a slice of their onsite made pies (the Apple, and Banana creme pie are their most popular and each are Good+). Depending on time of day there will or wont be line and the food made-to-order is ready promptly. Parking is limited. Theres outdoor picnic tables & heat lamps if needed to eat at in the back **when C-19 outdoor restaurant restrictions are not in place (pics show picnic tables stacked up during the current no outdoor eating restrictions. You can sit on the sidewalk or set up to eat on 2 abandoned Newspaper stands in front of The Apple Pan. *Good+ & Friendly Customer service too.
This is a fun vintage old school spot. You gotta check it out if only for the sweet crew who knows most of the regulars and serves everything fresh at the big horse shoe shaped counter. How can you not appreciate a guy who prepares your ketchup for you on a little paper plate, then brings hot French fries while waiting for your burger. On the burger front, they are tasty. Im not a fan of sweet relish, which is the base of their special sauce. Next time Id order a burger minus the relish sauce. But it was cooked perfectly, great flavor, a bit messy...original style was a hit for me.I really like all the vintage plates, paper cones in metal fountain drink cups and community feel.Tried the apple pie as well....so full...but hey its the Apple pan right? For me, it was a little too cinnamon heavy although the fresh ice cream was a nice balance. I wish the crust was thicker and softer...mostly because I favor crust over filling in most things. Tasty treat and all around fun experience.Id go again for sure.
Nothing but hype- burgers are ordinary and overpacked with lettuce more than anything else; apple pie was tasteless and unappealing. Soda is expensive and in a can which means no refills. Guys delivering orders were great but girl taking orders has no sense how to be welcoming.
The nephew loves this place and its become a Saturday-after-practice lunch stop for us this season. Not necessarily my first choice but the kid always has a hankerin for Kirks so The Apple Pan it is.I do like the condiment bar with all the pickles, veggies, peppers and sauces to fit your tastes, Its nice to be able to put on what you want and how much you want no matter how odd the combination is. Onion strings are another favorite that the kids prefer over rings and the fries, while hot, are tasty. Oh, and Id be remiss if I forgot to mention their flavorful milkshakes that compliment any burger meal.
Best burgers in Los Angeles. The hickory with cheese will keep me coming back for a life time. Also the banana cream pie is perfection. Awesome food, awesome staff, awesome experience!
We are going to break down why I am giving the The Apple Pan a 2 star.I have lived in Los Angeles for for 40 years and have seen this place many times in my commute but never thought of trying it until I seen it on the Food Network. The burger and hickory sauce made it a must try, plus they had apple pie...I was sold.2 days later I found myself in line ready to order. Customer service was excellent, the host was friendly and gave the proper description of each burger they had to offer. Within the promised 10 minutes my order number was called. The friendly food runner handed me my double hickory burger with a slice of apple pie ala mode. Customer service was a 5 all day, but we are here talking about the food. The presentation was perfect and well put together, good enough for a picture. Two beef patties, fresh crispy lettuce, fresh tomato, pickles, single slice of tillamook cheddar cheese, topped with a heaping dose of hickory sauce. Upon the first bite I was hit with the smokiness of the hickory flavor, thought whoa this is good. But then two chews in I realized oh no...THIS MEAT IS NOT SEASONED AT ALL! I see how they are relying on the flavors of the sauce (seasoned great) and chesse but the burger pattiest take all that away. It soon tasted like hot nothing in my mouth. So that you know Im not overreacting, I found a pack of salt and pepper in my bag, and I didnt have any fries. I ending up leaving 1/4 of my burger discarded, only finishing the bread soaked with the hickory sauce. Now I move on the the pie. I wanted to try the pie without the added condiments (pie filling sauce, and vanilla ice cream) first, that way I could taste it without any help. First off the pie can not be warmed up, it is only served at room temperature. The crust was very bland and lacking the buttery flavor of a real pie crust. The apples, although they looked flavorful, was a 2 out of 10 on the sweetness scale. I said this cant be happen...its called The Apple Pan. The apple sauce drizzle that comes on the side, to be poured over the pie, was just the same. I dipped my spoon in it, just to taste and immediately put the top back on. I poured the ice cream on top thinking it would save the day, but sadly it didnt. I manged to scrape only the ice cream off which was the best part of the sad piece of pie below. The rest was not worth the calories and ended up in the trash. It was a sunken cost and I was okay with that. Speaking of cost my total with a fiji bottle of water was $29 dollars.I saved my whole day of eating for this meal just to go home and eat a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch as my sweet tooth was not satisfied. The T.V. brought my there but the flavor took my here.
A tiny place with great food. Its a classic and almost feels like youre stepping back in time. The food is great, but the drink selection could be a little better. Its a counter only diner, so you have to wait till seats open up to get a spot. Not bad if its not busy, but if its packed, which it usually is for dinner, seating almost becomes a free for all and its left to the customers to figure out. A+ burgers though, top notch!
Delicious Burgers & Pies! A glimpse back into the old school burger counter days. Service their original two burger menu, fries, with a variety of must try pies.
The BEST fries and burger! Dont forget the pie--we had to go with banana cream and have zero regrets. You wont wait long, its kept clean and sanitized, and everything is delish!
Some empty tables. We waited 40 minutes for scrambled eggs, toast and bacon. Sausage burnt and eggs hard and cold. Server was pleasant. Not her fault. Will Qe will
Its veryyy pricy for what you get for. I got the Hickory burger($9.25) and french fries($4.50!) for $16 SMH. The hickory patty was pretty flavorful, but thats where it ends. Burger was smaller than expected for the price and not much too it. The fries for the price was an insult. No salt nor seasoning and extremely bland in flavor. Definitely not worth it.
The best in town my favorite burger ever in LA
I came here after i have seen the great reviews about the historical The Apple pan, we ordered the steak cheese burger witch was better than the hickory burger, it was not hot as expected and the favour is mild the patty was thin and i figured out the restaurant now lives on the old Héritage even the famous Apple pan pie was less than expected
CASH ONLY!!!! I didnt know. But now you do!Its been on my list of places to try, and Im glad I went. Its counter seating so just grab an open seat. They have burgers, fries, and pies. I tried the pecan pie a la mode with a cup of coffee. My date had a slice of banana cream pie. Both were delicious! I will definitely be back!
Interesting burger spot, I enjoyed the freshness and the unique sauce but would order it on the side next time.
The Apple Pan is the burger spot on the westside that has been serving up their famous burgers, fries and pies for many years. Some of the recipes are over 100 years old and not a thing has changed in all those years. The atmosphere is that of an old school lunch counter, the service is fantastic and the food is tasty and delicious. Stop by and give this spot a try, you wont be sorry. Just remember, cash only!
Delicious! A great neighborhood eatery with a simple menu of comfort classics and delectable homemade pies. They make some pretty too notch thick, crunchy steak fries too! They arent open on Mondays but the burgers and pecan pies are absolutely worth the wait. The staff is friendly, helpful and sincere. The Apple Pan is a strong candidate for increasing the # of stars a review can receive.
They have a good burger with a classic taste (we preferred the hickory burger), solid fries, and decent apple pie. The counter service with vintage cash registers and blazing fast service feels like a refreshing blast from the past. However, I cannot fully recommend this place as it does not live up to the iconic best LA burger hype and is not worth the current $8 price tag, especially in a town with hundreds of great burger joints.
So I actually drove all the way across LA at 5pm just to have a cheeseburger from the Apple Pan yesterday, its that good. However when I got there, sat down and looked at the menu, something else caught my eye. It was their made fresh daily, southern style, baked ham and cheese sandwich! WoW this sandwich is incredible, my server was so kind as to suggest that I get it hot on rye as a melt and that was definitely the perfect combination. Sided with their fries, that are always cooked to french fry perfection with a nice big dollop of ketchup on the side. And as one must at the Apple Pan, finished it all off with a slice of their one of a kind apple pie of course a la mode. As delicious as this was Im still going to have to go back for the cheeseburger as soon as possible because out of all the great cheeseburgers in Los Angeles, the Apple Pan is definitely one of the best! This place is also still as original as it ever was in the late 1940s so make sure to bring cash because no cards are accepted here, however I was informed that they will be soon to come but please dont wait for that, like I said in the beginning, its worth the drive across LA at rush hour!
Theres a reason this place has survived 50+ years and is on the top of every foodies burger list for Los Angeles - the Hickory Smoked Burger. I recommend getting the extra patty and dont skip the cheese. If your a lite vegetarian go lite on the lettuce. Cant ever have too many pickles. Top it off with an order of fries, a cola and if youve still got room a slice of (or whole) pie... With the scoop of ice cream. You cant go wrong here with any order but if you do it right you will be coming back for years to come. Legendary.
The Apple Pan has one of the best burgers I have ever tried. The meat is flavorful, I like the cheddar cheese and the tomato sauce with the crunchy lettuce. It all blends in well to form a delicious synchronized sandwich. The only downside for me is the price. One double patty burger with cheese runs $15+, and a full meal for two with a slice of apple pie ran upwards of $50. Only reason I dont go here more often is that I can get a quality burger elsewhere much more affordably.
Don’t order the apple pie with ice cream if you intend on eating at the restaurant. The pie is served cold without the option to heat it, even after asking. $9 wasted.
This restaurant is my preferable site. Of all restaurants I know I love it most. I never miss an opportunity to go to visit this place. when I feel like having a special meal, this restaurant comes right away to my mind. excellent and diverse food and a large menu.helpful crew, and good atmosphere. Not less important, the expence is reasonable. I sent my friends to this restaurant with great pleasure.
Highly recommended place on google but boy google was wrong. Got the hickory smoked burger and was soaked with sauce and grease plus freezer burned ice cream, definitely not worth the price. Burger King is better. Don’t waste your money here.
Doesnt get any more authentic than the Apple Pan. Same staff since the beginning really gives it a vibe and the burgers and fries are amazing! Must try
The Apple Pan is a delicious diner that opened in 1947 which still operates the same way it opened. It’s a cash only small diner with a few options of burger patties, fries, sodas, and pies. They have countertop seating only. I tried the original steak burger which comes with a patty, sauce, mayo, pickles, lettuce, and cheese. It was an extremely tasty burger and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of stopping by!
The steak burger beef was cooked to perfection. The fries are memorable. The food are worth the price.
The Apple Pan is a Los Angeles institution/time machine. Go back to a simpler time when fast food meant cooked before your very eyes. And fries. And pies! Oh my! Yes, you have to wait for a seat at the counter that wraps ground the grill. Yes, you have to have a real communal experience with other diners, the way life used to be. And no, its not cheap. But its more than a burger or slice of pie, its a little slice of the past, preserved, not in amber but alive and tasty.
This place is CASH ONLY (checks acceptable too if you still carry them). I noticed the place several months ago when I parked across the street, it is so noticeably different and old time charming. We tried it today...well, it was good, both burger and apple pie, but not anything particularly significant. The seating and the old cashing machine were too unique to ignore! Will definitely come back again for its atmosphere.
It was great services, delicious burger. Good sauce..
The Apple pie is so amazing. I have never had a more delicious and freshly made pie in my life. This place is just the best and the atmosphere is so great.
Iconic. Great food and excellent customer service!
The food was great! I recommend the Hickory Burger and the Pecan Pie.
It was great! Atmosphere was perfect. Their pies are yummy too. Would eat there again!
All the food is fantastic, Tuna, Steak burger, fries, but especially great tasting desserts(Apple pie 🥧 Banana Cream pie)!
Simply put, the best hamburger place Ive been to, ever. I always stop here when Im in town. The best of their burgers is the Hickoryburger. Ive tried them all. The dessert - no matter which you get - is decadent and worth it. This is among my top of the top restaurants of all my hundreds of reviews... And Ive been here 10 times.Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz
Good burger.Overall meal was good.i would compare it to In n out or Habit. Not quite a gourmet burger but tasty and not overcooked.if I lived in that area it would definitely be a regular spot.
It’s ok. I would rather get burgers 99.Also, any place that can charge me $9 for a burger but can’t afford to give me a glass of water looses a star. I can only assume the owner is related to Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob.
I know, I know... Its an icon. Staff was great. Food was so-so... Maybe due to pandemic, but didnt impress me enough to return...
Burgers Burgers Burgers! Old school burger joint with freshly baked pies! Yummy! It feels like traveling back in time with the decoration and appliances, the cash registered and the soda is served on a paper cone. Service is fast once you are seated, just be patient to find a spot on the counter.Recomended!
Good burgers, excellent fries, delicious pies, seating outdoor during COVID, not crowded on Wednesday noon time.
This was an amazing no-frills, classic burger. If you’re looking for a trendy burger joint with hip ingredients, this isn’t that. If you’re looking for an unpretentious, perfectly cooked, simple, all-American burger and fries, you won’t be disappointed.
Visited for the first time in 7 years after finishing University and both the food and experience are amazingly consistent. burgers are served with really nice produce, and for those who dont eat beef there are even tuna sandwiches (you can ask for a melt ). There isnt a formal waiting system, you almost have to observe who arrived before you and after you and follow the honor system.
I finally got to visit The Apple Pan for the first time back in September 2016 and I have to say i was very satisfied. The dining room is small and only has counter seating but that adds to the charm. The open kitchen in the center allows you to watch the cooks prepare your meal. The big window on the right side of the counter allows you to peek in to bakery where the pies are made. theres nothing more temping than seeing all those freshly baked pies cooling on the racks. The hickory burger was tangy and sweet and very delicious. The fries were hot and fresh and where else in L.A. will you be able to drink your ice cold coke from a paper cone. The piece de resistance of the meal was the slice of chocolate cream pie I ordered for dessert. The food was delicious, the prices are affordable to moderate, and the old time atmosphere was the icing on the cake for this classic establishment.Be aware you might have to wait to be seated if every seat is occupied.Overall the wait is definitely worth it.
Burger was just warm. So much lettuce barley tasted the burger. Way overpriced. Who charges $2.50 for a can of soda. Will never eat at this place again. A lot better options.
Very good food very polite workers family atmosphere
Apple Pan is the last remaining consistent, go too, staple left in Los Angeles. Hickory burgers are always on point and I bought a full Apple Pie to go as well. Delicious as usual. Owners are getting a little greedy with pricing but its the old supply and demand theory. Forever a fan of the Apple Pan.
Good food. Seating in the back
Classic West L.A. hamburger joint. A fixture in the neighborhood for over 70 years. It really hasnt changed much at all over the years... Except for the prices. You cant go wrong with a Hickory Burger with cheese and banana cream pie a la mode. Most of the staff has been there for over 25 years and some of them have been there 40 years or more. Same family has owned it forever and probably will forever. Their food is some of the best around!!
Best burger in town! Hickory burger with cheese is always a good choice. But you have to try the pecan pie because it is just incredible! I keep getting a slice of Pecan Pie with every order, its too good no too..
This little burger joint was really interesting! They accept payment in CASH ONLY because they have old-fashioned/antique cash registers. The space is small and bustling with activity; you have to be willing to jump on a stool when you see one open. The fries are amazing, but my burger was undercooked. Very pink in the middle. Not my favorite meal ever but a fun adventure for tourists like me!
Neat old fashion burger stand.
This is an original diner for 1940’s with a simple menu and the best burgers in LA
The very best burger around, and trust me, I’ve tried many that claim to be.
Classic LA burgers. Always good.
I’ve been coming here since I moved to LA, at the recommendation of a friend. This place is one of those amazing local spots that you HAVE to visit if you know what’s good for you. Simplicity at its finest. And if you want a great addition to any party, stop in for one of their amazing pies to take home! Word to the wise-cash only here.
Enjoyed a delicious meal with my family. Great customer service, friendly staff and a very cute set up to sit down with family or friends.
So everyone raves about Apple pan, the beacon burger spot for the west side. So I went to give it a try. The girl (allie) taking orders talked and told me what I should order on my first time.(thanks) I listened about a hickory burger and banana pie. The burger was like a old school backyard burger. Classic American fair! A tasty flavourful slice of banana pie. Again a staple of Americana! This place for me reminded me of a time more simple time from the past. I like the vibe and the good food. keep on trucking!
Steak burger is good taste like Bobs big boy cause of the sauce. Hickory burger is my favorite. All there pies are good. Fast service so you dont have to wait to long.
Been here 20 times or so. Best burger in LA, maybe anywhere. Ive eaten a lot of burgers. Not cheap, but for me, worth every penny and then some.Friendly cashier. Always get the Tillamook cheese... the banana pie was a good dessert. The flavors are balanced and all stand up for themselves. The crisp thick lettuce cut is always great. Great relish w ketchup... surprises me every time how good their burger is.
