Great stop for random book exploration or for finding something specific.Books lean on the creative side so dont come in expecting a Barnes and Noble. In a really nice hip part of the arts district of LA. Often find myself gazing at big blue skies and feeling a breeze gust in ricocheting off both long buildings this store is in between.

Beautiful bookstore lined with colorful tomes of varying sizes. This is an iconic landmark, and was celebrated as such. I thick that selling used/rare books might add some character to the place, but I understand their need to make an honest living and keep it running. I bought three books and the proprietor was very friendly and we had a good chat about Richard Brautigans Trout Fishing in America (sorry, no underline).

Its a really cool bookstore if you are into art & architecture. They have books on other topics but the options are limited. Definitely recommend if thats your interest, however, I wholeheartedly disagree with the woman who said to visit this place to get a feel for the city. If youre a tourist, spend your time elsewhere!

Great bookstore, great events, and great cat (Franny). I like that you can sit and read to see if the book can entice you into buying it without someone bothering you. The selection is nice. Very literary place. Very helpful. Ive even bought some funny, unique cards from Skylight. Support an independent bookstore. They love you back.

What a great place to browse and find some amazing books. It has one of the most comprehensive collections of books on art, design, photography, architecture and the like I have ever seen. Its a huge place and you could spend hours looking through all the different collections. If you have an art lover within your friends and family this is the place to buy them a beautiful one-of-a-kind book but they will truly cherish.Always support independent bookstores.

The staff at Hennessey + Ingalls is amazing. They know books, they love books, and they love to hook people up with books. Just go in, tell them what sort of thing you like, and theyll recommend three or four things in the same vein. Jude Feldman, the manager there, is particularly helpful. And they host great events, too!

If you are trying to sell used art books, please don’t go there. We called the place and the owner was very arrogant and not friendly at all. I politely asked if they buy used books. They said that “Well we don’t just buy everything.” I was waiting for them to keep saying and they just stopped there. I then asked “ what kind of books do you take?” They repeated again “we don’t buy anything.” And then I asked “yes I understand but what kind of books do you buy?” They said “visual arts related.” I then asked “can you take books in today?” They refused to tell me and kept asking if I have visual arts related books. Ok. If I don’t have any visual arts related books, then why would I keep asking? Also, let’s hypothesis that I do not have any at the current moment, why is it so hard for you to answer my questions? I don’t understand why the owner of the store could have such a condescending and cold manner. :/

I have always loved this bookstore, in each of its locations over the past 30+ years since a friend first introduced me in college. One of my favorite places to go in Santa Monica and one of the few vibrant architectural bookstores. It is easy to get lost in the various design sections, including regional speciality areas like California Architecture. The store is in a beautiful location just off the ocean and a couple of blocks from the promenade. Stout in San Francisco comes close to this store but has no where near the space of this store; Praire Avenue Architecture bookstore in Chicago is sadly no longer in business.
